Sorry folks - I'm all for supporting small businesses, but just not on the Yelp fan wagon on this one. Adam is pompous, ALWAYS tries to upsell and his wine selection is really boring, typical stuff. He's still got 2007 roses for retail price, for chrissakes, when he should be giving them away at this point. He's so unpleasantly pushy and abrasive, and the punch card "discount" totally changes too. I've now gone out of my way to not buy wine here. Adam was incredibly rude to me and my two friends when we went in on July 4th to pick up a bottle of vino verde for our party that day. I think he looked at three young women, heard my request for verde, and made some snap judgments: that we didn't know anything about wine, and that we'd still buy from him if he basically spit in our faces. He yelled at me (literally - not an exaggeration) that he didn't carry "poison" in his shop and continued for about 45 seconds before I cut him off. Extremely unpleasant. Also, the store doesn't carry any small bottles of hard liquor. We wanted a small flask of gin, and the only large bottle they had was $30. Go down 5th to the liquor store near 15th street, and avoid Adam and his prices. read more

I went in with two friends yesterday to get some booze for our Fourth of July BBQ. We needed vinho verde (spelling? probably wrong) for a cocktail we were making, so we asked Adam if he had any. His response (basically yelled at us): "I DO NOT SELL THIS POISON IN MY STORE." Oh! Well, that's interesting. So Adam, do you have any other not-so-sweet sparkling wine? He told us no, he had a cheap bottle of Prosecco that might work for us (implication being we were cheap) for $14. Okay, maybe I am cheap but I think I'm just used to the massive selection of sparkling white wines under $7 at Trader Joe's, but sorry dawg I'm not going to buy a bad $14 bottle of Prosecco after you just yelled at me. We then asked if he had any flask-sized bottles of gin because we only needed a little to add to this cocktail. He scoffed at us and pointed to a rather large bottle of Bombay Sapphire saying that it was the smallest. We then walked out of the store and found another place up the street. I like this wine shop. It's small and there are like 3 employees (a husband and wife and another guy, all friendly. They give great recommendations, chill your wine for you, and have wine tastings on Saturdays. They also have a small selection of other booze and sake. Don't go in scrubs or you'll get a 30 minute lecture on health care. read more

When I lived on 19th street I visited Adam's almost daily. They have a great rotating wine selection. They will let you try stuff. THEY WILL LET YOU RETURN SOMETHING YOU DIDN'T LIKE! I had noticed the store in my neighborhood but didn't imagine it would be anything but another wine store. After meeting Adam and being made to feel so incredibly welcome in his store, I really can't imagine ever going anywhere else. Adam's distinguishes itself by not being just another liquor and wine store, but a place where you can get to know the owners, chat and learn about liquors and wines, and really get a sense of community. How many times have I walked into Adam's Wines and left a little tipsy? More than I can count. But Adam's is so much more than a place to get a free shot (or shots) from the charmingly adorable and knowledgeable husband and wife duo who run the store. Admittedly, I don't know that much about wines. I have a few brands that I always purchase, but when I want something new, I usually get whatever bottle looks the prettiest. I haven't been back to this wine store in way way WAY too long. But I figured to walk over on a day off from work for the hell of it and grab my favorite 'fire wine'. That's not actually called fire wine but is a spicy tempranillo: Garnacha de Fuego. Told you. Fire wine. Adam and the rest of his business partners and family are always super friendly, helpful, and informative when you come on by! If its during normal evening hours often he has wine tastings. If you're lucky enough he will let you try his special honey vodka. It's one of a kind. Everything is categorized by country in a neat and orderly fashion. They also have a discount punch card for if you purchase what i believe is 12 bottles, you get the 13th for $1. I love this place enough that no matter where I've moved around to, I always find myself coming back out of curiosity to check on the place and pick up a bottle. read more

Adam's fills a need - it's the only decent wine shop in the neighborhood. By "decent" I mean the staff actually TASTE the wine, instead of just stocking wine by brand, the way shoddy liquor stores do. Their selection is reasonable. .There are a few gaps, but that's bound to be the case in a small shop. The staff are also super friendly, although I felt a little talked down to - they seem to assume most of their customers are less savvy then they are. That annoyed me, as it felt a little patronizing. But their friendliness mostly overcame this. The negative reviews here illustrate what's going on with this shop: They're located in a neighborhood where many customers are starved for a decent selection of wine and spirits, but others expect to be able to walk into any liquor store and find a cheap handle of JD and a magnum of Yellowtail shiraz. Adam's only cares about the former type of customer. Which is fine by me. Yeah, they have a little bit of an attitude, but when you're the only decent wine shop in your Brooklyn neighborhood that's understandable. It is still a little annoying, but I'll be back because they're really my only local option. And the selection is decent. read more

I've only ever had amazing experiences here. Especially when the owners are working. Once I brought several bottles up just to fill our wine rack - I had chosen them blindly. Adam asked if there was a reason I had chosen a particular red and I said, "no." He pointed out a bottle that was $3 cheaper and better. He said to me, "Try this one, if you don't like it, come back and let me know I will get you something else." They are always pleasant and easy going. They knew this restaurant's menu and paired a perfect recommendation for the dish I was planning to get. There is one reason, and one reason alone that you would need to visit this place...they stay open later than most of the other wine and liquor stores in the area. If you're looking for liquor, prepare to pay at least $10 a bottle more for pretty much everything, and if you're looking for wine, prepare for a peruse of average wines at best. Whatever you may be looking for, you're sure to always get one experience...an up sell or unwanted help from the shop keep. One time I was asked what kind of wine I liked to drink, I had already chosen a bottle, but I took the advice of the "connoisseur" and changed to a different bottle...turned out to be really truly terrible and I can only imagine that he had a lot of that wine in stock, or it gave him a better profit margin. Another time I was in need of some whiskey, and my other haunts were closed, he attempted to sell me vodka, and eventually when he rang up what I actually wanted he then gave a huge spiel about how the bottle I just bought was overpriced rubbish. IT WAS OVERPRICED BECAUSE YOU CHARGE $10 MORE FOR IT THAN ANYONE ELSE. Oh and then there was the time when he rang up one bottle twice, and charged my card for 2 bottles not one. When I tried to get a refund it seemed like that was a big deal and suggested I just take 2 bottles instead...I did, and I woke up the next morning with a pretty bad hangover, but that's not the point. If you know what you want and don't want to pay through the nose, do yourself a favor and go to Bay River on 5th ave between 14th and 15th. But if terribly awkward sales pitches and overly priced booze is your thing, then Adam's is the place for you. read more

Five minutes in Adam's Wines and you'll want to buy everything in the store. (Yes, need may arise to put AA on speed dial, but that's hardly the point.) After hearing my guy wax poetic about this place for so long, we finally stopped in to pick up some prosecco. I was completely won over by Adam and his wife's warm hospitality, sense of humor, and knowledge. I don't think I've ever been so convinced to like a place bc of service in such a short time before. After supporting this wine shop for 3 years, today I decided to give my business to another local wine shop. Wine options are good (not great) location is good, but I have never found the service to be friendly. The guys who work there are the typical wine snobs. Tiresome. They rarely ask if you need help and they always seem cranky. When I bring my own wine tote, they stand behind the counter like a zombie, and watch me bag my own wine. Small shop with sturdy bags, though I have to disagree with the negative reviews about the owner - each time I've been, he's been more than polite, always laughing, and made a few very good (albeit unsolicited) recommendations. Like previous posters stated, they are generally friendly and helpful. But, when I finally filled my punch card, it all changed. I had purchased one $8 bottle, one $25 bottle, and the rest in the $15 range. I chose a $15 bottle for my freebie, thinking it averaged out. After a laborious process (involving a calculator) to determine my free bottle price ($12) I suggested I could pay the difference. Adam said no. Then my partner (who was holding our baby) went about choosing the wine. Adam suggested a bottle, my partner asked, "Oh, have you had it?" Adam proceeded to raise his voice aggressively, saying he ONLY stocked wines he likes and how dare she suggest otherwise. Bay River wines is just a few blocks away, it's cheaper, and the owners (the Kims) have only been kind. And if you're going for a punch card, the store on 7th Ave & 15th St (from whom Adam stole the punch card idea and design) don't bother with a calculator. I think I'll walk the extra blocks from now on. read more

If you are/were a regular here, you know that he thinks every single thing on the shelf is "fantastic." The owner, Adam, and his wonderfully adorable wine will help you get the best damn bottle of wine that you're looking for. Adam is extremely helpful. He won't screw you over just to sell a more expensive bottle of wine -- he'll actually tell you to get the cheaper bottle if he thinks you'll enjoy it more. If you get him talking (and it doesn't take much) he will tell you some very interesting/amusing stories about his life growing up in Poland. I wanted to pick up a dry Riesling for a dinner and after telling the clerk my preference for dry and my budget of twenty dollars she recommended a bottle that I couldn't stop drinking. Love Adam and his wife Elitzia. Large wine selection, good prices, friendly staff, etc.. I mainly drink white wine, and I like that they frequently change the bottles in the cooler case, which helps me mix up my routine. The spirits selection could be a little broader, but it's a much nicer shopping experience than Bay River with it's fifths, day time drunks, and lotto machines. Great local shop. read more

The store was fine--small, but with an adequate selection. However, the man behind the counter was unnecessarily rude. We had unintentionally pressed the buzzer twice (the door was locked anyway, mind you, with nobody in sight during normal hours), and when he eventually let us in the first words out of his mouth were, "You only need to use the buzzer once," in a snippy and condescending tone. Abysmal first impression when it comes to customer service and friendliness. We made fun of him during the entire walk back to our friend's house after that.
