I called Excalibur and they said this wasn't true. They could install a similar model of tankless water heater to the one I had. Their quote was almost $2000 less than the other plumber. I since had an HVAC company come out for something else and mentioned I had to change the heater recently. I told him what I paid and he said that was honestly a good price. Excalibur seemed honest and helpful and they were able to come out first thing the next morning and get my heater replaced. They did a good job and the new unit looks better installed than the original. They also gave me advice on how to maintain it and what maintenance I could do myself to descale it etc so it doesn't break again. Overall happy either way the service even though overall it was expensive it was still less than other quotes I got.

They also checked whether we had any pets during the initial booking call, to avoid sending a plumber who might be allergic. These are fairly small things, but they did a lot for our peace of mind. First, they took two days to get back to me on a problem that was on-going (toilet would not stop running) When they did, they sent a techniciant (Lazlo) who was curt and tried to upsale me. For example : He said it would tak $600 to fix, and when I asked him how much to just replace the toilet, he said $1300. Money is tight, and he showed no empathy in that regard. He told me he would need to be paid immediately, rather than sending me an invoice. And he was not friendly, or particulary sympathic to the cost I may be facing. He said he had to pull out the toilet to repair it, and the labor of that and replacing it would be a lot of money. I let him go, and called Advanced plumbing. They were here in a matter of hours (vs the two day wait from Discount) , came and fixed the problem without pulling out the toilet, to a total charge of $300. I've learned over time that a lot of these guys are trying to scam you and run up the bill. My advice is to shop around, and certainly don't deal with a serviceman who is less than professional, trying to increase your spending, and generally gives you a bad impression. Obviously, Discount plumbine (a misnomer) is off my list.

Before I called Garry, I researched my various tankless options and thought I'd go with a unit that had a concentric exhaust vent to avoid two openings either through the roof or wall (one opening for intake, another for exhaust). When Garry came to do the estimate, he indicated that concentric vents could be troublesome, in particular the exhaust being drawn in by the intake, among other issues. In his experience, their problems outweigh their advantages. I heeded Garry's advice. His crew, Angel and Jilmer, were able to install the new water heater using our original exhaust vent in the roof. They created a new opening through the back wall for the intake vent. Garry also measured our water pressure and found it was above 100 psi. He said the recommended pressure should be between 40-80 psi to avoid damaging the pipes and appliances that rely on water. So, he installed a regulator valve to ensure correct pressure. Angel and Jilmer were skilled and meticulous with the entire project. After the work was finished, they cleaned up and left everything spick and span. The new unit is a thing of beauty and I couldn't be happier. For the amount of work that was done, including applying for the permit, Garry charged a fair price.
