I had the good fortunate of selecting Bill Kohler when the furnace went out in a rental property I have. Instead of extorting me by asking for a flat fee to simply come out to the property to diagnosis the issue and give me a quote, he patiently worked with me during the phone call to guide me attempt to fix the furnace!. After unsuccessfully exploring different ways to get the furnace operating, Bill made an appointment to come to the property the very next day. We arranged to meet at 2:00pm but Bill called earlier because his morning job had ended. We then made an appointment to meet at the property at 11:30am. He was already there when I arrived! He then examined the non-operating furnace and patiently showed me and explain the reason why the furnace could not be repaired but needed to be replaced. That having been done, we made an appointment for the following week for Bill to replace the furnace. He showed up on the appointed date with two other extremely competent and affable men. The job was finished in about one hour. Before Bill left he made sure that the furnace was working properly, including connected correctly to the thermostat. He even offered to replace the existing thermostat at no extra charge. I should also add that when Bill first came over he looked at the heat and cold air intake vents in the apartment and advised that they should all be cleaned before the new furnace was installed. He recommended a professional whom I contacted and, like Bill, he responded immediately, came over the next day to clean the vents before the new one was installed. In summary then, Bill is one of the most honest, unaffected, down to earth technicians that I have ever encountered. He is responsive, keeps his word, and does what he says he is going to do. I felt like the actual service was fine. Bill was friendly and his crew did a good job and was on time. The big problem is the heater itself. Bill guaranteed me that this heater would work even better then the old one that had broken down. That has turned out to be very far from the truth. I have to put it on 80 degrees before it really starts to heat up even the living room. If I had known how badly this heater would perform, I would have gone fora better heating unit. I cannot thank Bill and his team enough. We have a 40 year old Mars furnace and Bill has come over to service and check it a few times. He answers questions via text and in the past has helped me diagnose and even fix an issue on my own over the phone. So, as ice rained down on our balcony on the coldest day of the year (of course), the old furnace started making a very loud scraping/rattling sound. Bill's schedule was packed, as was everybody's. We talked on the phone and he thought it was a worn bearing. I called another company and made an appointment, but it would be in a few days and they charged $$ just to show up. Furnaces have a pact that they will only meet their demise the coldest week of the year. They get extra honor if it is Saturday morning on a three-day weekend. My old heat machine never gave us a moment of trouble until .... Many phone calls made, many voice mails left, many mailboxes already full and Monday came without a conversation with anyone about a new furnace. Then Bill from Kohler called back. I may have just left him a message that morning? maybe it was left Sunday? They were booked ahead but he took time to discuss our heating problem and provide useful info. We agreed a basic "work horse" replacement would likely serve us well. He quoted a price - one I thought reasonable - and never tried to add any thing to that. Bill offered to have one of his employees, Carl, come look at our situation the next day. Following that - it was now Tuesday - he said he thought maybe they could get our one day job done later in week. Two workers arrived Friday morning and by 3 p.m. we had HEAT and a needed new thermostat!! Bill stopped in during morning to see how it was all going. My elderly Aunt who lives alone was referred to Kohler Heating by Cole Hardware. The father/son team (I don't know the names) not only completed the job of the furnace replacement right away, but they went beyond the call of duty. They offered to pick her up lunch, take her to a medical appointment and they helped her fix a dresser drawer. What do those things have to do with heating? Of course it tells you nothing, but it told me a lot about their character. I worry my Aunt will be taken advantage of by repair/service people. Family had to recently endure a furnace install to finally replace the one that came with the house that my parents bought with hard earned money close to 50 years ago. Be prepared to sacrifice your major limbs to pay for this with this local company. ONLY VISA cards or PERSONAL CHECKS are accepted. Half of the payment is required to start the job. Remaining balance is paid after installation is completed. If you're priority is scheduling time for this and working with a tight budget it would be best to look for other heating companies that can FIT your requirements. You will get a summarized statement of work which is considered a contract. No itemizations of exact cost or hourly rate listed in the contract. Just an amount of what it will cost. You will get a spiel of what your first half of your money will be used for such as heating inspectors, debris removal, and permits, etc,. Also, the guarantee that work done would be up to regulation code. This is important for a homeowner as you can get majorly fined in the future if installation was not done properly. No price match will be given to a competing company. Basically, haggling will not make a difference. Make sure to monitor these expenses as well as actual tasks and actual crew that do the work. Removal, cleanup and installation went longer than the three or four days estimation of completion. Removal was done by another vendor specialized in hazardous materials. A previous customer had an emergency so this crew had to attend to it. Several days pass until the crew comes back to continue and finish the install. Luckily, during the week that this occured the weather was still warm and no space heaters were needed to keep the house warm. The crew of two to three people did a decent job, but one crew member needs to be more meticulous on the task at hand. You as the homeowner need to ask and comment on things getting completed. If it looks crooked or questionably placed speak up and either get it adjusted or keep an eye on it in case it affects other pipes close by. The crew are experienced as well as the contracted electrician that worked on the wiring and checking of the new thermostat. The electrician was thorough in testing functionality and overall completion. The cleanup after each end of the day by the crew was decent. Explanations and practical suggestions shared by them were appreciated. Overall, the guarantee of the installation was mentioned to be a year from installation. Heating is now dispersed efficiently throughout the house and quality of materials used is comparable to other vendors. The owner of the company does a walk through as the final inspection with you as well as review of the manuals that come with the furnace and thermostat. A recommendation of furnace filters is mentioned and the suggested type to use for your home environment. Unfortunately, a reusable filter of equal rating for normal use was thrown away without being notified if it was desired to be kept. These types of reusable furnace filters are NOT CHEAP. They come in different types and ratings so if you have one make sure it doesn't get tossed. The company owner is personable in nature and is helpful on recommendations regarding contractors used on installations. Only the constant promise of either stopping by to drop a receipt never occured. It took several phone calls to remind him, but still a no show and numerous responses of the days travails of why he could not send or drop a receipt by. The receipt was sent over through email finally, but it took numerous corrections to get the actual total amount listed. That is the only thing that is correct in the generic receipt received. Customer name was never corrected and no specific description on what the payment was for on the receipt as well as actual date it was paid. The date listed was when the receipt was sent. Plus I had to do a file conversion each time to check it as the receipt was in a macOS format. Do your homework and be knowledgeable on what type of furnace your paying for and its functional rating. In the end no heating inspectors came and the constant reminder of a receipt of payment took close to a week and half to finally receive by email. You do the math on this one. Makes you wonder what you really paid for was worth it with the amount of time and waiting endured as well as installation being up to city code specs. read more
