My husband and I bought two americanos via the drive-thru. His was a 12oz with 4 sugars and mine was a 16oz with 3 sugars and cream. We thought that the coffee tasted great! It seemed to be of a really good quality and the espresso to water ratio was just right for our tastes. Unfortunately we were almost positive that they put in Splendas in them instead of real sugar. We don't appreciate the after taste of Splenda so we didn't take more than a few drinks. I will go back but I'll make sure real sugar is added next time, maybe even personally. read more

About the only issue I have with this place is the fact that it gets crowded, which speaks to how treasured it is in this area. Good cafes -- not to mention good creperies -- are in short supply in Salem, but if there were more this place would be even better (in that the crowd would be a bit less). The coffee is great and they make excellent espresso drinks. I particularly love that they have hemp milk and make a great hemp latte, as well as some fun holiday drinks. The crepes are very good. They are BIG, and are willing to make any customization you want. My wife and I will usually order a breakfast savory crepe and a sweet one (we finally learned we can almost never finish a whole savory crepe on our own!). There is a fireplace too, and although seating around it it rarely opens up, we do manage to snag one of the nice tables there from time to time and eke out a very pleasant Sunday afternoon boardgame session with coffee and crepes. For work, as a venue it is less than ideal (owing mainly to the crowds, but also the seating is not well suited for laptop work). But when you're in a desert, anything will do! read more

What a great little place great coffee , great crepes . I only had two gripes about this place . 1. If its your first time eating here you have to do a small bit of guess work . They don't bring the coffee to your seat they just call it out from the bar and set your drinks down there . Not a big deal , but it would be nice if the staff would let you know that you need to come and get your coffee . The only reason this bothered me was because our crepes were served so fast I only assumed that the coffee would have been served with my plate . 2. Seating is pretty limited we got stuck sitting at the end of the restaurant , which was another reason the coffee thing bothered me , as we could not hear our coffees being called out not that I knew I was supposed to listen anyways . That aside , if you sit at the end of the restaurant and its cold outside you will freeze you buns off . With that said ALWAYS wear a sweater or jacket if you plan on going here in winter since you don't know where your going to get stuck sitting . All in all I would most definitely go again ! The patio at the French Press is one of my favorite Salem spots for breakfast or lunch on a summer day. That its dog friendly is also a plus! The low fence, landscaping and potted flowers give it a cozy European feel. My two favorite items on their menu are the maple bacon crepe and the Emily Love (Nutella, custard, bananas and whipped cream!) crepe and I have never been disappointed. However, my brunch partner ordered an omelette served with some very disappointing potatoes. It was a very busy Sunday morning so maybe they felt rushed to get them done so we will give them another chance. I've been going to French Press on occasion for a few years now. Originally loved their crepes and then I discovered their Turkey Panini which is fantastic. However, lately I've noticed their seriously bad customer service and timeliness with the drive-thru. After ordering at the drive-thru, I pull up to the window to not be greeted. I pay and then 15 minutes later or so I finally get my food. Next time I decide to call it in about 10 minutes ahead of time so I don't have to sit and wait so long at the window but instead still waited around 15 minutes for my food even though they said on the phone they would get it started right away. I really love their food but not sure it's worth the wait, high prices and lack of friendliness. read more

My favorite coffee in Salem, hands down, is the Willamette Latte at this place. Amazing, dark chocolatey taste and well worth the price. The crepes here are decent as well, although I wish they had a bigger selection, and maybe some salads made with the same ingredients as the crepes. I don't ALWAYS want a crepe. Also, their scuffins are pretty tasty, the blueberry is a great side with any coffee. The inside is warm and inviting, a great place to chill out in the winter (they have a fireplace!) or in the summer, they have a good sized patio section that gets direct sun midday and is right across from Ventis, if you need a cocktail after your coffee. They are also pet friendly and let me tie up my puppies on the patio so we can get some sun together. Although this place is more self-serve than full serve (they'll clean up your dishes if you leave them, but that's about it), I haven't had any attitude from the staff myself. read more

We come in fairly often over the years, and it's one of favorite place in Salem. Their crepes and coffee selections are always enjoyable. The staff is generally not friendly. there is always a line. It's crowded. I'm glad business is doing well! It's nice having a coffee shop out south. A-OK is a good way to put it. After reading the reviews, and with acute self-awareness of being a customer service freak, I was a little nervous. But strawberry crepes in the middle of summer? I couldn't resist. To be fair, they probably could've used at least one more person on staff working at 9am on the Tuesday I came in. As far as I could tell, there was 1 person cooking, 1 person doing the drive thru, and 1 person working the counter and making drinks for people in the cafe. I waited patiently at the counter for a bit as they made a few drinks, internally distressed by the fact that I had not been greeted. Eventually I was acknowledged and asked, "What can I get you?" I went with an ice chai to accompany my strawberry crepe. The barista took my card, swiped and handed it back. "Oh, I'll need that again. Sometimes these machines act up. They're from the 90's." "Woah. Museum status!" He wasn't amused. I was given a number and grabbed a table. After a few short minutes "20 OZ ICE CHAI" rang out across the well-decorated cafe and I went to collect my drink at the counter. The person ringing me up didn't tell me where to find it, but if you have been to a Starbucks in the last 10 years you should be able to figure out how this works. The chai was not loaded down with ice, nor was it bogged down with too much spice. It was on the soft, milky side of the spectrum, a nice change from what I've come to expect from your average Dutch Bros. Once my crepe was dropped off at my table, it was ON. Very delicious with fresh fruit and a really great french custard. I wasn't doted on, and true, no one told me I'd need to bus my own dishes, but overall not too shabby of a place. My wife and I love going to French Press on a regular basis. It's a busy place, which tells me I'm not the only one who enjoys it there. The wait staff there have been nothing but friendly to us every time we've been there. The atmosphere is cozy cafe, and the food is always top notch. We have our favorites, and the crepes are excellent. You can't go wrong with them. They have a great variety of coffee selections, and you can get them in go-cups or regular ceramic mugs. The 3 stars is due more to service than food or coffee. With the exception of one time having gotten quite a bit of coffee grounds in my drink, the barista did not replace it when I told her about it, : / the coffee has typically been rich and flavorful. They have good crepes, and a nice variety of them as well. The service I've had here has never been anything to rave about. If it was, I would go more often. Though it is located only feet from one of the busiest streets in Salem, I still find the outdoor seating pleasant in the Summer, and it has a cozy ambiance in the Winter with the fireplace and nice tile. read more

I regularly drive past this place and finally decided to stop in one afternoon. The place is cutesy with a fair bit of kistchy Parisian decor (think multiple Eiffel Towers). Unfortunately, the service was shockingly slow and unprofessional to boot. I waited 20 minutes for a tea and toasted bagel. There was such a lag between when I ordered and when I received my order that, the young girl who both took my order and brought me my bagel, forgot who had ordered it. I watched her offer my order to two other women before I let her know it was mine. I was not alone in my disappointment. While waiting 20 minutes for my tea and bagel, multiple customers anxiously picked up drinks that they were certain were theirs and then were only disappointed and frustrated when told "your drink will be ready shortly." Upon reading other yelp reviews, it seems to me a common complaint. If you are a retiree with plenty of time on your hands, then I'd say give this place a shot. We found this place while traveling north and looking for something a bit better than a diner or fast food for breakfast that would still be quick. We scored! French Press is a cute little place with lots of options and a drive through. Their coffee is great (a must!) and the food is tasty. So far the crepes are by far the best menu item. I did try a sandwich and was disappointed. The baked goods are also great. I do wish they'd offer a salad or two, which would make it pretty much perfect in my eyes. They're quick and the quality has been consistent. The staff is friendly and the place has a variety of seating options and has nice, clean restrooms.
