My husband and I did the National Mall and Tidal Basin walking tour a few weeks ago when we were in DC for cherry blossom season. Our guide, Trevor, was terrific: enthusiastic, energetic, and a wealth of knowledge, everything you want in a tour guide. If you've never been to our nation's capital before, a walking tour of the National Mall like this is excellent since you visit all of the memorials and monuments over a three hour period. If you have the energy and the time, you should do this one. We started at 10am on Friday, March 22nd; it was sunny when we started, but then got overcast and chilly as the morning went on, but we beat the rain that did arrive the next day. Over the course of our three hour tour, we walked a distance of 4.6 miles (according to my Garmin) and visited the WWII, Vietnam, Korea, Lincoln, MLK, FDR, and Jefferson Memorials, plus walked a good bit of the Tidal Basin to enjoy the blossoms. Along the way, Trevor doled out facts and history about everything we saw. Yes, you could do this on your own with a book or audio, but this tour was better since you have a live person to interact with the whole time. Although it's called "Free", Tours By Foot is actually not free, unless you are just rude and don't tip your guide. I made a reservation online for our tickets, which cost $4 each (the booking fee for each person). On the day of the tour, you tip your guide whatever you feel is fair. The guide takes cash and Venmo. I will definitely be using this group again when we travel since they offer tours in cities all over the world!

National Mall Tour - Started @ Lock Keeper's House. Ended @ Jefferson Memorial. 10 Stops. 4 Miles. Great tour by foot.

Free Tours by Foot - Washington DC Free Tours by Foot is worth it! And if you have Trevor has your Tour Guide, it's worth it-er! Trevor was an awesome guide and took us through the Memorials at National Mall. We started at the Lock Keeper's House located on Constitution. From there we either visited or had a great view at the following places... Washington Monument World War 2 Memorial The Reflecting Pool Vietnam Veterans Memorial Lincoln Memorial Korean War Veterans Memorial Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Tidal Basin Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial Thomas Jefferson Memorial There was 20 of us and the tour took a little over 3 hours, which ended up being a total of about 4 miles on foot (yes, Garmin confirmed). Trevor was a great guide, kept us on time, and did an awesome job highlighting all the stops. Trevor also included a few fun facts and even some "Easter Eggs" be on the lookout for. The cost of tour is "name-your-own-price", which means you pay what you think your experience was worth. We had a great experience and highly recommend Free Tours by Foot.

We did the Moonlight & Memorials tour end of May and it was perfect: pleasant weather, less crowded, beautiful DC at night. Our tour guide was Trevor. He was awesome, friendly, funny and knowledgeable. We enjoyed our time and definitely recommend doing this night tour.

Immensely enjoyed the two-hour walking tour of the National Mall I went on a couple of days ago. Rebecca did a superb job with explaining the backstories of the sites we visited. She told us several things that we didn't learn in school. For example, did you know that war memorials are dedicated on Memorial Day? Or that the Washington Monument is held up not by a sturdy foundation but gravity? Or that the names on the Vietnam Memorial aren't in ABC order? I learned those facts on the tour. Rebecca was really cool for letting us explore the sites and take pictures of them for 10 minutes or so. I felt like this tour made my first time to the nation's capital complete. So, if you're looking to have someone guide you on the National Mall, get with these guys. And if you're assigned to Rebecca, prepare to be amazed.

Highly recommend Free Tours By Foot while exploring Washington, DC. We started our long weekend in DC with the White House Ghost Tour and the Moonlight & Memorials Tour and then added the Arlington National Cemetery at the last minute. Booking is so easy on the app. Just a few dollars to reserve. Make sure to tip your tour guide generously. Each tour was so unique and each tour guide was excellent. Everyone should take a Ghost Tour in October. Emilia was the perfect guide on the White House Ghost Tour. She wove a historical paparazzi tour filled with the tales of the early days of Washington politicians, duels fought to the death, Andrew Jackson's cheese party, and the tragedies that followed Robert Todd Lincoln after his father President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Learn more about Dolley Madison and the haunted Octagon House. Perfect for a haunted tour under a full moon on a chilly night a few days before Halloween. Visiting the National Mall with Eli in the Moonlight & Memorials was a great way to end a busy day. Lucky to see Marine One fly over the Washington Monument for the second time. How does Free Tours By Foot coordinate this at the start or end of their tours? (We had watched with Emilia the night before.) From the Lockkeepers Stone House, we toured the WWII Memorial, District of Columbia War Memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and Lincoln Memorial. Visiting Arlington National Cemetery on a sunny Sunday morning with Stephen was the perfect way to finish our long weekend trip to DC. Arlington National Cemetery is such an expansive cemetery that having a guide who is so passionate about history made the three hour tour seem to go by too quickly. Love how he started at the Military Women's Memorial and then navigated our walking tour throughout the cemetery which ultimately culminated with the Changing of the Guard. Highlights included the hill with the Supreme Court Justices including Thurgood Marshall and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Challenger and Columbia Memorials, the mast of the USS Maine and the grave of Audie Murphy. Stop to remember President and First Lady Kennedy at the eternal flame. Kennedy is one of two presidents buried at Arlington. Stephen guided our group from veterans from the Revolutionary War to Vietnam to astronauts, like John Glenn, and to prize fighters, like Joe Louis, in a very fun and fact filled way. We have used Free Tours by Foot in other cities here and abroad (Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, Madrid, Budapest and Prague) and have always enjoyed our guides. Interesting that several people (from different parts of the world--Germany, Australia, Israel) took the same tours with Emilia, Eli and Stephen over the course of the weekend. It was fun to compare notes and exchange travel recommendations. Make sure to tip the tour guides. Highly recommended.

Had an amazing and informative tour with Gideon. We saw all the major monuments over three hours and his insights were excellent. Thank you Gideon!

We did the Ghosts of Georgetown tour (which is not free). Emilia was a great guide! She really knows her history and has a knack for storytelling... I definitely got goosebumps during one of her stories as if the spirit were truly present!

Since I live in northern Virginia, I have been able to take many tours of Arlington Cemetery by many companies, but this tour was completely unique. Brenda, our tour guide, did an amazing job of explaining the deep connection of Arlington Cemetery to World War I, the birth of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, why the Tomb is guarded, 24-7, General Robert Pershing, and it was all fantastic, but she also showed us the Gravesite of James Reese Europe, the African American pre-Jazz great who fought for and was injured with the Fighting 369th, nicknamed the Harlem Hellcats. Possible the most amazing story was that of fellow Fighting 369th member Henry Johnson who single handedly took on 20 German Fighters and won, saving the life of his partner who had been injured.
