I think I have a new favorite brewery in town. The beer was excellent, many styles that are not over-represented in Charlotte, Delicious Cream Ales, Locally roasted Pure Intentions coffee browns, A wild strawberry sour, etc etc. The beer was great and a refreshing change of pace, hopefully this is the start of many interesting innovative beers. I also liked the lower priced half pint pours so I could taste more without overdoing it, also nice they had quality Non-alcoholic soda/coffee options. The facility was great, drinking amongst the brewing equipment, a great industrial feel, it's tight, which I like at breweries because then people pierce the personal space bubble and talk to eachother. They also were very smart and put small bar space and stools on what would normally be unused railings, comfortable, lots of seating, but be happy to share a long table with strangers. An OK amount of outdoor seating, and the obligatory food truck parked right outside. Music was folksy and mellow and at a great talkable volume, I think I will be returning often. read more

What a gorgeous place! Check out the funky antique store next door that's open pretty late. Check Free Range's hours as they are closed on Sunday Funday. Bonus points for being across from Amelie's, can't go wrong there. Why four stars? - plenty of parking - HUGE they have a whole nother chill space in the back for cornhole and chillaxing -seats have backs, yeah I'm getting old. Glad to welcome NoDa's newest brewery to the neighborhood! This one has been a while in the making, and as soon as I walked in the door for the first time, I understood why. The layout and the atmosphere show a real attention to detail in creating a laid back, rustic, artsy vibe. A few logistical things to note if you're planning to visit. First off, it's only open Thursday through Saturday. Second, they do have food trucks onsite when they are open including one of my favorites: Ooowee BBQ. Third, they do have their own parking lot. There is outdoor seating, a good sized bar and tables on the inside, and an unobstructed view of the big ole barrels where the beer is brewed. Pretty cool. The chairs at the tables inside are old classroom chairs and old school bus seats which is a nice touch. So far, I've only tried a couple of the beers: Jenny Bought a Farm and Bob's Pure Intentions. Bob's Pure Intentions stood out to me as it's a collaboration with the local coffee folks and it's really nice if you like java. This place has tons of potential. I hope to see it make its way into local bars and restaurants in the future. In the meantime, they have an awesome venue to hang at. read more

Free Range was our 7th brewery visit in two days and it was a sure favorite. They don't do flights but they do 1/2 pints for a great price. At first we were hesitant but the Caroliner Wild Ale was on point and went down as fast as any tasting glass I had all week. Great new, fresh, and trendy vibe. Cool Tractor Themed Brewery. We stopped in on a raining Saturday to get a feel for the new brewery that we heard a lot about. I am not sure if it was just because it was a Sat, afternoon, or if there was a family function going on, but man there were a lot of children there. I am not sure if they just cater to families more, but this is the most child/family focused brewery I have stopped at. They had lots of space for them to run and books/toys in a corner. The beer was good, they come in small offerings, normally smaller than the standard pint. Pretty much everything was easy drinking and could be enjoy on any type of day. Fun thing, try and see how many tractor logos are stationed around the building. T-shirts dont count. read more

Free Range is definitely one of the breweries that I don't think about as much as the rest of them, and to be honest, I don't have a good reason for that. With many of the brewery amenities that we've grown to know and love (yoga, run club, food trucks, fun events), Free Range definitely holds it own. The variety of styles that they offer is enormous - just last night I was able to sample everything from a sour to a saison to a BBA strong ale to a Pure Intentions Coffee Brown, and they had a few IPAs as well that I just didn't get to. Everything had it's own unique flavor and was well brewed. I've even been here once when they were giving away Tamales for free, which was awesome. It's someplace where I'll have to keep on the front of my mind for when we're looking for something a little different. read more

I must say that Free Range is becoming my go-to Charlotte brewery -- and that's impressive. I agree with everyone's assessment that the space is really nice: good decor, relaxed vibe, "organic" kind of atmosphere. The first time or two I went I was a little unimpressed with the beer selection, but in the past month or so they have broadened what they offer. I also think that their beer is unique, leaning more toward wild ales and saisons. They've got a really solid cream ale always available, and several of their more adventurous offerings have won me over. My other big reason for making them my new default brewery is because of how chill the atmosphere is. I'm one of those apparently annoying parents who likes to take his child out to hang, play games, and enjoy the sunshine at breweries. There are some breweries in Charlotte that have amazing beer but are a complete hassle to visit because they're packed and loud. Free Range is spacious, relaxed, and easy to visit. Their beer is unique and different and well crafted. We love coming here! read more

I truly enjoy this brewery for many reasons but more importantly, they have great beer! The staff is very friendly and while they use the "fancy beer phrases and lingo" that us, really me, dont understand, they pick up on my very confused face and quickly divert into more of a conversation, which I LOVE AND APPRECIATE!! They have yoga, food trucks rotating and live music every week. They have these fun beer cans they fill up for to go orders. You have to plan on drinking the entire 30 oz or so that it holds same day but chances are when I buy it, its because I plan on finishing it with guests at home :-) speaking of, its super convenient they are just a few streets away from me. Just when you thought NoDa couldn't possibly have room for another craft brewery, and squeezed in between the now *Old* locations of NoDa Brewing and Birdsong, Free Range jumps into the fray and makes quite a splash. Reborn is a garage with a sleek taproom that eliminated the wall between the brewing equipment and the tap room, and creates a relaxing, inviting page that is a nice mix of rustic, artsy, and reclaimed/vintage chic that all the cool kids want to see and be seen in these days. Now open Wednesday through Saturday, look for a different food truck each day that makes Free Range both a spot for a clod draft and a spot to catch a quick, though tasty, meal as well. There is floor space for Yoga or small events and an outdoor seating area as well, a long bar runs almost the length of the tap room with a crisp, white tile backing. Old bus seats and plastic chairs that are a throw-back to your school days add to the chill, rustic vibe that runs thru this place. But let's talk about the beer, which is they primary reason you go to a brewery in the first place, right?! Solid efforts here that will run across a range of palettes. Ales, Porters and an IPA or 2 are usual candidates, along with some seasonal one-offs that may be worth a shot. I tend toward the IPA side of things and the efforts here are stellar- well hopped, dry but with a depth of flavor. If you are luck enough to visit with the Double IPA is on tap, grab it and send me a thank-you later. It is, in one word: Awesome. And then there are their collaborations with coffee here- Free Range has parted with local roaster Pure Intentions to create some unique offerings. Not to mention cold brew nitro on tap all the time as well. This is a unique feature in a brewery and offers a nice alternative to those looking for something other than a beer. In all, Free Range is a solid addition to the craft beer scene and their tap room is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Very good atmosphere and a lot seating. Inside was very nice and a wide selection of beers. They do not do flights which was a bummer. I got the stout which I found to be very weak. I did try other's beers and found them be okay. The best beer there is definitely the IPA. The website is not up to date so I can't tell you the name of beers. They did have non alcoholic drinks on draft, as well. Kombucha, soda, and cold brew coffee. read more

I hosted my wife's surprise birthday party in their back space and I don't think I could have had a better experience. Sarah (the event planner) and the rest of the Free Range staff were flexible and accommodating during the planning process - they made everything so easy! During the party, the staff was very attentive and friendly to the ~50 guests. Multiple people mentioned how they had never been to Free Range and plan on returning ASAP. Came by for after dinner drinks and it didn't disappoint! Eugenia (Black Beer Chick) greeted us and we had the entire back patio to ourselves. Had the Slightly Emotional which was a hazy IPA and my friends had the Black is Beautiful which had a strong but delicious coffee taste and the Heart and Soul which was a fruited beer. This was my first time visiting this brewery and didn't know what to order. I asked an employee for a recommendation for a "sweet" beer and he recommended the Susan Tea'd Off which contained hibiscus & tangerine peel. I loved how subtle the flavors were but it wasn't as bitter. I'm not a big beer fan but I'd order that again. read more

Was in the neighborhood Saturday with some time to kill before our Charlotte Made event at Cloister Honey. Was around 1:45, not a soul in the place.(Another person came in as I was being helped) Was looking to takeout , they had Crowlers to go but alas, the most interesting one to me was not available to go..I went with another IPA (can't remember the name!) it reminded me of a NE style IPA, very tasty. I do believe it was a tad pricey at $14 though .Breweries need to be a little more competitively priced , you can get Charlotte area drafts at BRIXX for $ 3.50 a pint a couple of nights a week..If I'm in the neighborhood again with a designated driver I would like to visit again to try some flights. read more

This was the fourth stop on my brewery/bottle shop tour of Charlotte and I must say that it was the least impressive. After Noda (great location & beer), Heist (unworldly IPAs), and Salud (fantastic selection), this place just had a hard time competing. I thought the overall décor and set up inside was great, but was not a fan of the fact there were 25 kids running around screaming, when I was there to try a few brews and move on. As for the beers themselves, I did like that they tried some different styles and flavor profiles, but found them to miss the target for the most part. When I come back through town, I will give this place another chance (every spot gets two in my book) and hopefully the experience will be much more pleasing than the last. read more

I was underwhelmed with this comparatively new brewery. I don't like that I was underwhelmed because I love the location. Even the space itself is nice. You have plenty of seating options including the bar, seats just a few feet from the bar, a back room, and outside seating in the front and on the side. And yet, I was left unimpressed for two reasons. One: the beer selection was smaller than I had anticipated. Not small in the number of beers available, but small in selection. I am a dark beer drinker. In the colder months, most breweries offer at least 3 dark beers (porters or stouts). Free Range had 1. Two: Children everywhere. They had an event going on for the kids which, while nice, is not ideal in a brewery. I understand that some parents really enjoy being able to drink beer and have their kids entertained, but for those of us without children or who hired a sitter to get a break from our children, it was undesirable. That seating in the back room and on the side of the brewery I mentioned above... completely full of parents with their kids. As a result, on a 48 degree day, we sat outside because there was no seating inside. Let me emphasize, if you are looking for a brewery to be able to take your kids to, this is the place and you should definitely go. As for me and my crew, we will be choosing a brewery that caters to the 21 and over crowd. read more

We went here for their 2 year anniversary. It was very well organized, even though it was raining they still had plenty of space inside. I liked their token system which made everything go fast and more smoothly, and we were not waiting too long for a beer. There beer variety was good, i am normally not a IPA person but they had a IPA there that was more of a sour which was delicious. They had a strawberry drink that was good. They have a little kid section and it is dog friendly too which is always good. read more

We really, really, really enjoyed this joint! What kind, sociable bartenders. Dustin was so helpful. We tried all kinds of beers, making sure we got we got our favorite. Modern Art, Dustin's favorite, is not a bum steer. It is a lovely pale ale. Sometimes when I drink an IPA I think of it as an endurance test, but this was floral forward with a smooth finish. The Cream Ale was DH's favorite. I liked it quite a bit as well. I liked the option of a half pint. I paid more per oz., but think of the calories I saved! The music playing when we first got there was my jam (From The Smiths to Led Zeppelin)The live music was also very pleasant. There was a moment I hoped they would say, "Hey BK, we need a hand with this Tori Amos song.." But that was just a passing delusion because I was lulled into such a happy state of mind. I was also intrigued by the bathroom "locks". What a simple, but ingenious system. So often, the public bathroom locks don't work for one reason or another, but it feels like they may have stumbled upon a simple, fool proof system. We literally had almost given up on the Charlotte beer scene after 3 other poor experiences at other breweries, but I'm glad we forged on. The taproom is pretty cramped and not really laid out that well. It was hard to squeeze into the bar to order. I only tried 2 of their beers before I left, and they weren't that great. Great spot to grab a beer with the whole family. The space is open and fun, perfect for people of every age, and even includes a space for kids. The beers are flavorful without being overly heavy and the menu offers a nice variety without being overwhelming. NIce little brewery in NODA they brew excellent beer and have a really nice space to just relax and drink a beer in. We tend to always try out something new when we go here and never get the same thing twice. They always have a food truck outside and they have board games to sit down and play with your friends. They seem to do a lot of events with other local businesses in the area, so its really great to be able to sample and see so many great Local NC business's and products. read more

Did I do something wrong? Only thing I wanted was my check tonight and I got a eye roll from the male employee behind the bar. Didn't catch his name but he was about maybe 5'10 to 6 feet tall with curly brown hair and glasses. Solid build. I normally never have a problem. This makes me sad. My friends had to wave down the other employee and she gave me my check. Thanks to her, I felt like I was recognized as a human being... kinda hoping you don't have a problem with black people...I was one of few in there...if not the only one at the time of the incident. read more
