I scored a first-class upgrade on the flight in, Enterprise ran out of standard cars and handed me the Keys to a convertible, and I ate the best grits of my life topped with Milwood's crispy brisket. That was just half a day in, so naturally, I started feeling like Charlotte had passed me a note, "I like you, stay longer." The one thing I failed to respect was the Carolina summer sun. I desperately needed a hat. Sure, I could have gone to Target or the bike shop I passed earlier, but any civilized man knows the best place to buy a cap is a brewery. Untappd pointed me toward one of the most popular breweries in a city full of popular breweries: Burial Beer Co. Since I was driving, I kept things responsible and sampled taster-sized pours, spacing them out with non-alcoholic mocktails and 0.0 beer like a grown man who still wanted to remember where he parked. Burial also offers cocktails, ICEEs, low-ABV session beers, THC beverages, wine, and self-serve water. The menu helps you navigate the offerings with color-coded sections: cocktails in blue, light-bodied beers in neon green, dark ales in orange, and high-ABV options in pink. Food isn't available onsite, but delivery gets the green light. I grabbed a corner seat at the bar, not because I wanted to brood, but because the post-brunch crowd had arrived in full force with babies, buddies, and dogs. Every bartender and guest I spoke with treated me like I had wandered into a neighborhood clubhouse instead of a brewery. They gave recommendations, bought me a drink, and one even helped me pick out a hat. I came here last night with a few friends. We arrived at 9pm and sat on the upstairs balcony, so we enjoyed some great views while sipping on refreshing drinks and catching up with each other. I tried their homemade sparkling wine but honestly was not the biggest fan - the flavor was too cider-y for me. So for my second round, I stuck with my go-to prosecco. I tried some of the other IPAs and lagers; as far as beer goes, they were pretty good. A bit on the expensive side - $8 for the pint, $14 for the wine. But great atmosphere and such a fun part of town (plaza midwood). They do have some cocktails as well, so maybe I would try one of those next time. I would definitely come back for the atmosphere - and on Tuesdays they have trivia. Nice bottle shop on the first floor, but didn't get a chance to peruse on this visit. I went to Burial because it was on my cousin's list of breweries to check out when he came to visit. For what it is, it will do. The staff are nice and customer service is good. I didn't particularly like being around, or smelling, so many dogs inside on a hot summer afternoon, but I guess that's the trend now. And before I start making enemies, just know that I'm a dog person. I just wish there were more dog-free spaces. At any rate, this isn't one of them. They have a limited food menu but I enjoyed the Cajun butter wings. I also got an order of the Greek fries which were ok but the falafel needs a little extra zip or zing to 'em. The infused Paloma did the job. If I do go back, I think I'll sit on the outside patio. I need all the fresh air I can get there. read more

Love their beer, did t care for this place at all. Went on a Sunday mid-afternoon in July and it's was absolutely slammed. Only 2 beer tenders working. The big, big, big problem was the noise and chaos inside. It's not spacious and there were so many people yelling at each other to be heard, babies and infants everywhere screaming and crying and dogs barking at each other, so we had just one beer and bailed. Oh my god was it insanely loud in there. Beers are good, but pricy and all double ipas are only 12 oz pours. LAME. Customers are way better off just buying cans and running out the door. Of course, parking is nearly impossible to find as well. Wifi is strong and free though. The only way Im ever going back here is to grab cans, which by the way, is a lot cheaper by the ounce compared to buying a draft here. read more

This is quite a novelty brewery and bar that has a modern emo-grunge theme both in artwork and drinks. Being a brewery they have mostly beer but a couple of cocktails for those that prefer it like myself. All their cocktails and drafts have interesting names to emphasize their emo dark theme - I ordered the "Shadow of the Reaper" cocktail. We came 20min before last call and they happily served us and let us upstairs. They have a more traditional bar setup downstairs with a good amount of tables. Additionally they also have a small rooftop with a small bar that overlooks the street - we walked over from having dinner across the way. Definitely recommend especially if you or your friends fancy the darker grunge aesthetic as some of the patrons also entered with this style and it added to the ambience they go for. Once again with my latest experience with Burial Beer was a rewarding one. The latest beer that we have had from this brewery was the Surf Wax, an IPA with tropical, piney, citrus and hoppy flavors. The hops really got my attention on the first sip with this one but the IPA was very good and refreshing! The body of the beer was nice and smooth which I enjoy with my beer drinking experiences. Amazing brewery in the historic Plaza Midwood district of Charlotte. I have been to the original Burial brewing in Asheville so I know how great the beers are. This tasting room has a very different vibe from the one in Asheville but they have an amazing rooftop bar, an outdoor patio and indoor tasting room. There are two bars, one on each floor which is very convenient. They also serve food but we didn't eat anything this visit. Staff is friendly, merch is on point and their beers are fantastic, they have some wonderful stouts with complex flavors and high alcohol content. These are definitely my favorites from Burial. As well as their creative names for the beers. For example: Fortunate Miscreants of A Kindred Ilk, And All That You Fear Will Slowly Melt Away, Where Everything Was Perfect in the Pits of Aimless Dissatisfaction. They have fantastic Sours and IPAs as well. They are open Monday - Wednesday 12pm - 11pm, Thursday - Saturday 12pm - 12am and Sunday 12pm - 9pm. Definitely check out Burial. This is one of the coolest breweries in Charlotte and amazingly centrally located in plaza. It's walking distance from lots of other fun Plaza locations. There's a spacious indoor area with a one-up serving style, where you wait in line to get served vs spreading out at the bar. There's also an oudoor area downstairs and a rooftop where you can see uptown slightly, but it's now getting blocked by new construction. They have both beer and cocktails, so something for everyone. You can find the Charlotte location of Burial Beer Co The House of Relics at 1218 Thomas Ave, Charlotte, NC 28205 - this is a fairly trendy area of town featuring several bars, clubs, restaurants and breweries within walking distance. Parking is out front or along streets - there appears to be plenty, especially as regular retail closes for the day. I believe this location has been open about a week - the brewery occupies an existing building that appear to have originally been some type of retail or commercial spot. The exterior is brick with a row of glass in the front and access to a fenced patio to the rear, which I believe also gives you access to the rooftop. The interior has polished concrete floors and exposed metal lattice raftering in the ceiling. The bar extends most of the way on the back wall with the door to the back on the left and bathroom access to the right. There's a retail shop on the left side where you'll find an impressive bottle and can selection as well as shirts, hats and other brewery items. On this day we tried pretty much everything on the menu that we hadn't had previously - luckily it was an anniversary bottle release day so we got to both taste the beer and take home bottles. Here's the list of what we tried: * Anno Domini Imperial Stout 4.3/5 - Exceptional coffee stout with low bitterness coffee notes in a creamy coconut and toasted hazelnut barrel aged body, finishing with dulcet vanilla notes. Just a touch boozy but the sweet vanilla makes up for it. * Abstract DDH Opulence: Imperial Illusion 4 Crème Ale 4/5 - Interesting somewhat syrupy cream ale with tart citrus and mango notes in a thick creamy caramel body, finishing with sweet vanilla and a bit of hops. * This Legacy is an Abstraction to Unbridled Curiosity Imperial Stout 4.3/5 - A cross between praline and a pecan pie, notes of sweet maple, nutty praline, coconut, coffee and chocolate in a thick sweet body, finishing in vanilla. * An Actuality Rife with Frequent Unavailability Blonde Ale 4/5 - Somewhat floral saison with citrus and lemony notes, thin fairly easy drinking body finishing dry with notes of honey. * The Virtue of Patience Barleywine (2021) 4.3/5 -Nicely conceived barleywine with caramel barrel body, notes of marshmallow, chocolate and vanilla, finishes into the dried fruit and molasses range, a bit boozy. * Ocean Swallows the Sun gose 4.4/5 - I enjoyed this a lot, tart red hued and somewhat Kriek-like with great mouthfeel, vinous and floral notes finishing slightly sweet with a touch of funk. * Keepers Veil Saison 4.1/5 - Well executed honey ale with tart tea and lemon notes in a slightly earthy base - finishing full and slightly dry. * The River to Hell Runs Red Flanders Oud Bruin 4.4/5 - Perhaps my most favorite in the lambic range, this Oud Bruin expresses tart berries in a dark red body reminiscent of a fine wine in an effervescent body finishing with a lingering vinous quality and a bit of funk. * Ninth Passing Imperial Stout 4.5/5 - Delicious sweet barrel aged stout with big chocolate coconut body finishing in sweet vanilla much like a chocolate macaroon. A touch boozy in the finish but well worth it. * The Incongruence Between What We Know and What We Pretend to Be Triple IPA 4.4/5 - Well executed thick juicy body with haze-for-daze, notes of sweet citrus and melon finishing with enough resinous hops to hide the 10% ABV beautifully. * Formed by Responses Involuntary to Experimental Stimuli Double IPA 4.4/5 - Sophisticated multi-layered hops in this juice bomb with a super hazy citrus and tropical body, finishing dry and hoppy, so good. Fall of the Damned Fruited Sour 4.3/5 - Every version of this seems to improve on the previous, huge notes of blackberries with a jammy barrel aged tart body finishing sweet and dry with an amazing mouthfeel. Another great addition to the CLT beer scene! We have been to the one in Asheville, but glad to have one in our backyard! They have a large assortment of beer, along with wine and non-alcohol - so there's something for everyone! They also have food - a straightforward menu of burgers, chicken sandwiches, wings and some vegan options as well! We were big fans of the buffalo wings. There is also a surprising amount of space - inside and then a back patio and an upstairs rooftop deck. The rooftop has nice skyline views (until the apartment complex is finished). One of my favorite breweries in Asheville made it to Charlotte and I couldn't believe I hadn't been there to try it yet. A friend was in town visiting and I had Monday off, so we ventured to burial after lunch and arrived around 2 PM. We grabbed a seat at the bar inside as it was pretty cold out, there were multiple other people inside, some drinking and conversing, so I'm working and drinking, or a combination of the three. Bartender, Matt Moore was super knowledgeable about all of the beers and gave a good history of burial to my friend in town. Decor is on point and beer is phenomenal. Love the atmosphere of this Burial! I am a huge fan of the Burial in Asheville and was excited to hear they were coming to Charlotte. The outdoor space is great for when the weather is nice, and they even have an option to open up the windows downstairs to give the whole place an outside feel. The beer is always nice, crisp, and refreshing. I am not a huge fan of IPA's and barrel aged beers (which is what this place is good at), but my friends say this is one of their favorite places. read more

Nice, open area around the bar, music played at the right volume, cool retro seating. Great gift shop that includes vinyl! Beer options are off the charts from hazy, to west coast, to BBA imperial stouts. Some amazing sours, too... get the marionberry! The rooftop bar and deck may just be the best feature of the space. Above all, the icing on the cake is the staff here. Very patient with newbies, and very quick to recognize repeat customers.
