I finally stopped by Fred's Mexican Cafe and honestly... it's exactly the kind of spot you want when you're in Kihei. Adulterated smashed pinto beans. They shouldn't be spicy. That's what good salsas are for e.g. Good Poi doesn't need more than taro. Research the cooking of beans and the different types to be made, like Charros or refried or boiled and salted. They just shouldn't all be put together. The Kahlua pork was indicative of being saturated with liquid smoke. Very disappointing to taste liquid smoke. Our ancestors would be disappointed losing the taste of roasted pig. I get it, tourists are just hungry and may not know of better Mexican foods. The house just wants $$$. Given, some people may like this type of style, but it's a poor representation of an ethic food to those who may think it's the bomb or actually feel the disappointment Sauces on Surf and Turf were tasty, but the innards were disappointing. The turf sucked. The few shrimp were probably farmed and rice filler let the burrito look big, with little steak inside. I feel I was fooled. Beans and rice quality are identifiers of good cooking. It wasn't happening for me. Some people may not actually know what authentic tastes are. Some people don't know what they need. We had a very nice table on the first floor side patio. The service was great, but the food needs adjustments, simple is good. Preparing good food doesn't need alot of spins on authentic food. We all have different experiences in food consumption and prep. A chef needs to be on point and not make spins on recipes that don't need much more than simple ingredients and assembling. Outdoor back areas had odors of grease and wash water discharges. Etching in asphalt pavement or concrete are indicators. The beach and marine life don't like nasty rainwater from restaurants. Not Ono Not very ono. Gordon Ramsey would kick ass after tasting the food here. I didn't complain, I paid my bill, and gave a good tip to the accommodating server. Please take heed of the tips in this message. Improve the beans and rice. Don't use rice as a filler. Improve the rice cooking methods and ingredients. Don't say there's steak in something and the customer has to imagine it's there. That sucked. read more

1/26/26 I was on Maui visiting a friend and was meeting another friend for my Birthday lunch so I followed her lead and went her recommendation. What a great location! A cantina style place with outside dining right across from the beach! You can't lose with a spot like this. Location! Location! Location! The service was stellar! Our server was on top of it! When I got the Chips and Salsa the Salsa was very flavorless. I asked for something spicier and was told it would be an extra charge.....disappointing! The Cadillac Margarita was more like a Yugo Margarita.....not impressive at all! I tasted no Grand Marnier whatsoever! The food was pretty good I had the Monterey Chicken with Rice and Beans and it was tasty and tender but lacked seasoning. I even asked for extra spicy and it was still rather bland. I am back home and missing Fred's - the views are beautiful, it's a fun place with nice outdoor and open air seating, and the service was very friendly and efficient. Great drinks, also! Most of all I am missing the chips & queso + ground beef appetizer that I got as my main course. It was SO GOOD and a great portion to just have as your own meal when very hungry. I didn't get a picture because I demolished it immediately. There was a generous portion of meat, and a perfect ratio with the queso, and enough chips to enjoy it all. The chips were perfectly crispy, thin, and salty. My boyfriend enjoyed his fish tacos, as well - he said they weren't the best he had on the trip, but they were good. read more

Fred's is our go to place for breakfast and evening snack. Their loco moco and fried rice smothered in gravy is delicious. They serve Maui coffee and the service is always good. If you can get an outside table for two on the patio, the ocean view is spectacular. If you are lucky you can see whales or watch a sunset or both. Their carne asada nachos with black beans is a great afternoon snack or evening meal. Prices are in line for Maui and with South Kihei road currently closed in front of Fred's , there is no traffic noise. The food is so good, I keep forgetting to take a picture of it. read more

The place is a bit 'divey' but the open view of the ocean across Kihei Rd and Kamaole Park II is pretty nice. The food? Not so much. We had lunch here; a Pescado Taco Plate with a substitute salad in place of rice and beans for her, and a large Guacamole as a side for our chips and salsa. She said it was ok. Freds has been our go to for breakfast every year we have visited Maui. The food is amazing, and usually, our bartenders are amazing. This year,2026, was an exception. We always sit at the bar for breakfast and have a bloody mary and order food. The loco moco was sooooo good, and the bloody marys were tasty, from our bartender Kia. This was the first time we met Kia the bartender. We had breakfast 3 times at the bar the first week, with our newly acquainted bartender Kia. We tipped well, 50 percent, with each visit. We feel like 50 percent is a great tip for good service. Fast forward to the last day on Maui... wifey and I head to Freds for breakfast... opening time 8am. The doors open, we are happy that we are gonna be having some good food and drinks with Kia... the bartender that is on. We walk to the bar and Kia sees us.. she gets this angry ugly look on her face and yells at the manager and another employee..."Why did you let these people in? We dont want these people here!!!!". My wife and I are totally confused. They asked us to leave the restaurant because the power went out the night before and they didnt know when they would be ready to open. With the anger and screaming, we were just shocked. Why so much hate? We thought we found a place where the people were kind and not so judgemental or hateful towards visitors. We felt so offended after this and will never be back again. Shout out to Amon for being such a good bartender and treating everyone so kindly. read more

I was craving a taco on a Tuesday and this place seemed to check all the boxes. I really wanted to like this place, but there are definitely opportunities to improve. Since I was dining solo I opted to sit at the bar. The people around were very friendly but it was very difficult to get the server, Diego's attention. I placed my order, margarita, one kulla pork and one pescado taco plus chips and salsa. Had to ask twice for the chips and salsa and once the food came out, had to try multiple times to flag him down for silverware and napkins. Stopped by Fred's on Cinco de Mayo since it was next to our Airbnb and it was a fun random hang for the occasion. We were able to grab some bar seats and snack on some specials and chicken chingaderas - those things are tasty with a flavor profile of southwestern egg rolls in a fried panko arancini-like shell. It's just Tex Mex style seat yourself. We are here years ago and were back in the area and wanted a simple share meal and drinks with chips and salsa. Great server and it wasn't too busy. Great margs, pretty good chips and salsa. They upcharged us to mix and match tacos but tasty. Steak take great and wife liked her fish taco. Black bean Refritos were fantastic! Avg rice. We tried getting dinner on a Tuesday - Taco Tuesday! Could not park due to all spots taken and cars waiting to park. Returned on Wednesday for lunch. Not a lot of people. We seated ourselves due to their policy of "grab utensils, grab menus, grab a table" policy! loved it! The waitress was very friendly! Started out with a Mango Margarita. Such a fun place. Easy to find on S Kihei rd. Quite a bit of parking next to the building. Their breakfasts are SO good the macadamia pancakes with coconut syrup are SO good. We usually go to Fred's our first morning on the island. Today was no different. They opened late (9:00 am) due to a variety of issues, so there was a line of folks waiting--maybe 15 tables worth. We all came in at once at 9:00 am to cheerful, energetic staff who were both short staffed and with their automated order system down. The water and coffee came quick. Orders took a little bit longer. Amazingly within 30 to 40 minutes everybody had been served, were eating well prepared and tasty breakfast treats, and had full cups and glasses. It was fun watching them all work smoothly as a team with the kitchen cranking out accurate, hot, excellent food. Kudos to Fred's! read more

Tried this restaurant a couple times. Not too good if you have access to good Mexican food. The salsa is pretty bad. The margaritas were marginal and didn't seem to have much alcohol in them at all. The server said fish tacos were mahi but they had the texture of tilapia. Service was generally good but the price was high. I would avoid this place. read more

This worked out well. After a morning of Snorkeling with friends we came for lunch. The wet burrito is the way to go. I had the all shrimp and another had the steak n shrimp and the other 3 were chicken enchiladas. Now everyone is happy. Service was prompt and happy. We had a nice meal. I def would go back and look at the Taco plates. They looked great with rice n black beans. Friendly open atmosphere. Much better than last time. read more

Fred's absolutely nailed it. From the second we walked in, the staff was super welcoming and accommodating--they even went out of their way to seat us in a spot that felt like outdoor dining even though the patio was full. Total Maui vibes with that indoor/outdoor mix. I have a dairy allergy, and they were awesome about it--so helpful and made sure everything was safe for me without making it a big deal. I had the fish tacos and... wow. Perfectly cooked, fresh, flavorful. And the habanero salsa? Life-changing. Rick won't stop talking about the calamari taco, and my jalapeño margarita hit all the right notes--spicy, tangy, and so refreshing. And okay, I saved one of my fish tacos for later, didn't end up eating it until three days after, and it was still delicious. That says a lot. As we walked around Kihei, we wanted to find a place to eat out. Fred's Mexican Cafe caught our attention because it has a lovely open terrace and we could see people enjoying the food and view from up there. Curious, we wanted to give the place a try. We didn't wait for long. We got a seat outside and the view was lovely. I mean, we get to eat food with a beachside view and enjoy the sunset. They have a kid's menu and we ordered a burger slider with fries. We got nachos for an appetizer. Tropical Lemonades(one strawberry and one mango) for drinks, and a veggie quesadilla and a kalua pork burrito. We didn't have to wait that noticeably long and all of our food came in by a very nice worker. The tropical lemonades are super fresh and the food was delicious. This place has a nice view, good timing, fresh food, and nice staff. I had a pretty good experience with this place and could not find a thing to complain about!
