This venue is a revelation. After passing by the storefront many times, we finally ventured in and it opened up like a magical wardrobe. It's airy, bright with large format art on the walls and multi dimensional with a main dining room with several more intimate rooms off the side. Our table was at the junction of three of the spaces and we quite enjoyed that dynamic view. The food was generally very good. We started with the tequila and mezcal cocktails, and the Dorchester crab appetiser. They were all marvellous. The crab was enclosed in a terrine fashion lined w creamy avocado and topped W freshly shaved fennel, giving a bite full of all these components a real dance on the palette. Our mains were the duck confit and the veal. Both were done nicely but not remarkable. For dessert, we shared the tiramisu and typically I take 2 bites and my sweet tooth is sated. Not this time. I went back again and again and my seriously dessert obsessed husband actually paused his go at it since I so rarely express so much enthusiasm for dessert. We came here for drinks after Jules' going away brunch. There were five of us, and it was a nice little place to sit, with the giant front windows open, and comfy seats to sit around chatting while having an afternoon cocktail. I had a cocktail with champagne, rosemary infused vodka and grapefruit bitters. I wasn't too sure about the flavor combo, but I'm a huge fan of Rosemary vodka. We then moved on to the Pimm's which was really delicious with a nice mix of fruit, cucumber and mint. After we all left, and the other half and I went and did a bit of shopping, the two of us decided to stop back by to get a couple more drinks. We then opted to just stick around and have dinner, as we looked at the dinner menu and it looked fab. At the table, I asked if they could do a rosemary vodka martini using the rosemary infused vodka, and they asked and the bartender said yes, so they made us a couple of those and we ordered a bottle of red. For dinner we had the trio of tartare (salmon with dill, tuna with sesame and avocado, and scallop with apple) and it was absolutely delicious. Nice flavor profiles and it was awesome with the martinis. For the main we had the tastes of beef (oxtail, cheek, fillet and marrow) and you get a lovely plate with the four different preparations. Everything was delicious (though the oxtail had a bit too much potato on top). For dessert we went with cheese, and they had the most amazing brie I've ever tasted (and sourced from a place in Hertfordshire). Set between antique shops, Fredericks is a gem of a restaurant hidden away from Islington's lively upper street. The spicy Tiger prawns with mango salsa are very good but not worth £17. I do think the food is extremely overpriced but I love the 'hidden' garden which makes forget you are actually in central London. The staff are friendly and the decor is very tasteful but the food is quite pricey- go to Frederick's when someone else is paying! read more

Where it's situated in Camden Passage is great, and the interior is very interesting, however it is overpriced where the main course reaches up to £26.00 for lobster and the cheapest of the main being £13.50 for an artichoke and spinach ravioli (much too expensive for what it is). One dish on the the menu at the moment is pork belly (my favourite usually) with bok choy and a spiced aubergine caviar which sounds delectable. However, they are charging £18 for it, which is ridiculous considering pork belly is one of the cheapest cuts of pork you can get as it's predominantly fat, bok choi is a cheap Chinese vegetable and aubergine caviar is essentially a pulped puree of the vegetable. So it's hard to justify its price as £18 is just ridiculous! I only came here as a friend and I got a special deal one evening, which was linked with something to do with the Business Design Centre just up the road. This meant we got a 3 course meal at a snippet of the price, and the food was not half bad. It's just a pity that I don't have the urge to dine here again, unless I get that amazing deal as I also know there are plenty of other great restaurants which serve what they serve and not half as expensive. read more

Really nice French restaurant tucked away in Camden passage in Angel.The place looks small and unassuming from the outside but when you enter, it opens out to a large conservatory like room. The service, food and wine are all rather classy and very good! An ideal place for a business meal, romantic meal and/or just a classy night out. Prices are on the higher end of the scale, but I think the whole experience is so nice that you won't mind the prices (even better if you are not paying!). read more

If you finish early on a weekday, go for the early bird meal which is £19 for a 3 course meal. That's a bargain because a starter of scallops can easily cost about £13 for one plate. It's super close to Angel station and it's a spacious place filled with natural light. Apparently this place is often used to do a wedding banquet! For starters I chose a asparagus veloute which is a sweet warm soup, for mains I had a lamb stuffed in aubergine with lots of feta and melted cheese on top. This was definitely a comfort type of food and I love aubergines. The dessert had quite a nice range but I went for the mandarin sorbet which was tangy and refreshing. Including mohito on the side and very good service the bill came to £29 per person which is a bargain for such a fancy place! Great for quite business and or date evenings! read more

Fantastic and Fresh at Fredericks I have been to Fredericks twice and had excellent experiences both times. The service from the moment I walk in is exquisite. The wine list is extensive and the wine service is great Items I have had and loved: - Escargot - Smoked salmon - Pan fried sea bass - Tiger prawns with saffron risotto (AMAZING!!!) This is an excellent place for a business lunch or probably a pre-bedroom afternoon trist (if that's you're thing). The cuisine here is classic and yet isnpired. A solid place to dine. read more

A great French restaurant just down Camden Passage near Angel station and something of a institution in the area. Over the years it has had many incarnations and the current one is pretty beautiful with a vaulted atrium like area in the back and great service making an evening here feel special. Others have said that this is a great place for a business lunch or a cheeky drink at the bar with keenly priced, well made cocktails. I say go on Mondays or Tuesdays (or before 6.30 on any day) when they have a very reasonable three course meal daily menu with a choice from four starters, mains and desserts for a mere £19 or two courses for £15. This is exceptional value for a really nice evening out. Last time I had the Celeriac soup, Halibut and creme brûlée though the dishes do seem to change on a daily or weekly basis. The dishes are a little small but easily fill without feeling bloated. Top Tip - The Monday and Tuesday menu do not apply in December with last orders reverting to 6.30. As long as you're seated and have ordered by then you can have a wonderful meal slightly away from the hustle and bustle of the Christmas party crowds (though were were, in ourselves a Christmas party...). Bleedin Heck! I never usually eat at fancy pants places like this. Unless I'm schmoozing the board members of my guzzilion pound paperclip unbending company. Luckily I came across a nifty 2-for-1 offer so went in for a romantic dinner with a very lucky lady. This place is expensive but the price tags are warranted. The food was delicious. For a starter I had the Foie Gras and chicken liver pate with brioche and figs and for my main Côte de boeuf, béarnaise with chips (sorry "potatoes - chipped"). Both dishes were ridiculously good. My mming and aaaahing was so loud. It was like a slightly less inappropriate version of that scene from When Harry Met Sally. The service was impeccable. We were very annoying customers, what with my stimulated taste bud induced groans of pleasure and our constant requests to raise and lower the temperature. Our waiter was unphased. He was lovely. The decor is very cool. I felt like I was in Bugsy Malone. There's a nifty bar by the entrance where you can lounge with a cocktail (Old Fashioned for me). Didn't get all the stars because of the prices being so high for me. If money was no object this would definitely be a 5. read more

This is quite a swanky restaurant in Islington. I took my sister there to celebrate our birthdays and we had the champagne dinner (3 courses from the a la carte menu and a bottle of champagne). I booked by email, via their website, so they had my name spelled correctly and all my details. Unfortunately, when they replied, they addressed me as 'Caroline' (not my name, so just carelessness on their part). Then they wanted to know how many the table was for, even though I'd made it clear in the original email. All quite annoying. When I replied and pointed out their mistakes, they sent me a defensive and not at all apologetic email. So considering how much the front of house swank about when you get there, I think they could do better at the booking end and improve their customer service there. Anyway, the meal was nice enough, the restaurant looked very pretty and the waiting staff were initially very attentive (but we gave up trying to attract their attention later). Good for a classy night out, if you don't mind mingling with the Islington bourgeoisie. read more

Had a very nice lunch here last week. We started with Parma ham and melon, fresh and enjoyable. My partner had fillet of Cod and it was apparently extremely good. I had the Braised lamb chops with dauphinoise potatoes. The chops were perfection and the potatoes crisp topping but soft an tasty inside. The honey and walnut cheesecake was tasty, but try to avoid the honey drizzle around the cheesecake as it is overwhelmingly sweet. Ambience was lovely and the view of the trees and garden adds to the experience. Service was superb without being too much. Slightly pricey though. read more

I hope that the previous negative reviews are a reflection of a previous incarnation of Frederick's, since I had a lovely meal there last night. Decor is excellent: smart and trendy without being too pretentious. Every single staff member I spoke to was very pleasant and helpful; our waiter was very knowledgeable (e.g. recommending that I have the duck medium rather than rare as I asked, due to the thinness of the cut). I had the mushroom risotto with truffle oil (very pungent but tasty!), followed by the duck with fondant potato and savoy cabbage. The cooking was of a high quality, and definitely worth the price. I picked the restaurant because my friend is vegetarian, and they have an entire vegetarian menu, which is a luxury for most veggies I believe! She was most pleased with the range of choice and the quality of the food. We will definitely be going back, and recommending Frederick's to others. read more

Hugely disappointing for a) its reputation and b) value. I've been there twice now and won't be going again (unless someone else is paying). The food is perfectly acceptable though really not up to the prices and only just above average for what you might expect in a restaurant. Plus they were hardly original dishes, even for 'Modern English' which can tend to be the same old ubiquitous fare. The service, however, had got it all wrong. Snooty, dismissive, detached and humourless would be a good description. Maybe I was unlucky on the nights I was there. Maybe this place deserves it's (admittedly) packed hall of diners. However, neither me nor anyone I dined with (on both occasions) was convinced. read more

Great business lunch. Beautiful veranda at the back, excellent service and exquisite wine. I was a tiny bit disappointed by the food for this kind of restaurant. My foie gras was quite cold when it arrived and the "side" (accompagnement in French) too sweet. The main was great, really well done on the tuna, but also the side was not the best, too salty and tiny (vegetables spaghetti). Chocolate fondant was good. Not the best I ever had in my life though. This is a great spot if you're looking for someplace to sit and have a drink that's fancier than the usual options on Upper Street. It's a bit quieter on a cute side passage. They do a good job with their cocktails, and the table service is excellent. On a sunny day you can get a seat outside at the front or even just inside when they open up the doors and do some people watching. Dinner last night at Fredericks to celebrate a friend's birthday - with handy Taste card offer making it rather more affordable. The service was very slick and the conservatory room was lovely - shame it wasn't warm enough to sit outside, but there was plenty of greenery to make up for it. We were offered 3 kinds of very crusty bread (the roof of my mouth slightly suffered..) as we ordered - and we both went for the wild salmon with samphire and broad bean risotto with various side vegetables. They even asked how we wanted our salmon cooked, which was a first for me. For me the standout was the risotto, which arrived in a little lidded ramekin (sweet!) - although I am never quite sure if samphire really works in a risotto - it was deliciously creamy. I would have liked rather more of it - indeed if I'd known it was going to be quite so good I'd have ordered it as a main course by itself off the vegetarian menu. The side of spinach was OK, the carrots and peas less impressive... For dessert we both went for chocolate tart which came with coconut ice cream (none for me, I'm just never going to get over the whole sensitive teeth-painful icy substance thing)...the tart filling was delicious, very rich and fondant like - although the pastry was a tad undercooked, if I was being picky. They brought some incredibly large chocolate truffles with the bill, which strictly speaking I didn't really have room for but they were rather tempting. It wasn't the finest food I've ever had - but perfectly nice, and the conservatory room and garden were a pleasant place to spend a summer evening. read more

Standard overpriced British restaurant gloop. My calves' liver with mash and onions drowned in salt and butter to make it taste more 'restaurany'. At first taste, it was quite nice, until I realised this was the catering equivalent of an optical illusion. The dish cost over £20 with some (drowned in butter) spinach. Ingredients were worth £1 at most, the skill involved basic catering college tricks. No wonder nobody there apart from elderly American tourists. Not one I'll be back to. read more

Im surprised this place has such mixed reviews. I have always had a lovely time here and the food is great. The lunchtime 'prix fixe' really brings it into my price range for sure and its a great place to go if you fancy smartening up for a date wit a loved one. read more

Been here a couple of times and I don't seem to rate it as highly as others do. I found the food just adequate, nothing special really, and the prices are quite high for something adequate. The service was great both times. However the kitchen's attention to detail leaves a lot to be desired. I was vegetarian at the time and ordered the onion soup which was nice but came with a small piece of duck meat in! I was just going through a vegetarian phase so am not finnicky about meat so it wasn't too bad for me but for others who detest meat or have allergies this could have been quite distressing. Found light above table too bright, they adjusted it immediately. Food was done nicely, sea bass very good. Small sweets brought to table after dinner despite not ordering dessert, nice. Over priced, and not that amazing. I was let down also by their very little vegetarian selection. I am not a vegetarian (if you have read my other reviews you will know) but that day I was not in the mood for meat. The winter menu only had one dish out of eleven (yep, I counted), artichoke and spinach ravioli, which would satisfy my need. It was good I won't deny it, but at £14 it was a bit too much for the proportion and its taste. As a starter I had the halloumi and chickpeas, at £7.50, again the only vegetarian option out of ten dishes. I will say though, that the garden room is mystical. It has a vaulted glass roof that overlooks the patio, where they serve drinks and dining when the weather allows it. They also have private rooms for weddings, parties or business conferences. Overall, I would give this place a shot again, but I will definitely go when my carnivore appetite unveils and when my budget for dining increases. read more

I've only been here for lunch but I quite like sitting at the bar when it's quiet and reading. The staff are very courteous and the atmosphere is relaxing (and the decor is lovely). A great place for a light lunch, a drink, or an afternoon snack. I would love to come for dinner sometime but haven't yet had the chance. read more

Excellent restaurant. I'm surprised that there aren't many reviews here, since this place is bustling with customers usually. But anyways, the food is perfect here. We tried the duck assiette, the cote de boeuf, and sea bream. The duck was amazing, very soft and the sauce was just the right hint of sweet and salty. The wait staff was very friendly and welcoming as well. The restaurant is very spacious and has an outside patio which would be splendid on nice sunny days. read more

I used to go here a few years ago and it was fabulous. Well not anymore. I went last night and was so disappointed. The waiters were impatient, almost menacing. They took about half an hour to take our drink order, the food is well over priced and they make you feel like you have to eat, pay and get out asap. I wasn't impressed at all. What happend to the Fredericks I used to go to when it was very classy, romantic, the wine waiter would let you taste different wines and you didn't mind paying because it was worth it.. I would definitely never go here again, a complete waste of money. read more

My Husband phoned a month ago to book for Valentines day and a couple of days before he phoned just to confirm to be told you have not paid your £100 deposit my husband was not told about this so he took it up to them straight away , when he said why did you not tell me about this before they said they would of phone him as they just decided to do this . So on arrival we were seated me facing a wall with a bit of a mirror in the corner of the room there was no ambiance dont forget this was Valentines day we were given a Valentines day menu with nothing to do with Valentines as we were probably all there for Valentines day , there was nothing to welcome us as in a glass of champagne as a greeting as it was Valentines day there was not even a rose on the table as it was Valentines day and the staff were attentive but not one of the staff smiled .I have been to Fredricks loads of time but on an ordinary day and the food is always nice but i would of liked for the money you spend for just that little bit extra on a night like Valentines day read more
