I'm just going to be repeating what everyone else is saying about Freddy's...it's great. I've grown up with Freddies, but started to come here far more frequently once I got my driver's license and eight years later I haven't stopped. I've also gotten several of my friends hooked on Freddy's delicious arancini and gelato. A favorite of mine at Freddy's is the salami salad. I cannot find something like this anywhere else, and I go to alot of Italian grocery stores. It's sliced small bits of salami, sopressata, etc in olive oil. I love it. read more

Freddy's is probaly one of my most favorite resteraunts around. Ive been going there ever since i could remember, and my father (who grew up about 3 blocks away) was going there since he was young too. Their pizza is amazing, being a huge fan of pizza whenever I travel to another city or country for that matter (yes, including italy), freddys blows them away. They have a thick crust pizza with mostly imported ingredients, that is just very flavorful. Their pastas are all made there ( so i believe) and are also very good. My other favorite is their italian ice. It is very creamy and comes in a variety of flavors, in the winter its mostly just like chocolate, lemon, watermelon and a 3 or 4 more, but in the summer they have bannana, green dragon, pina colada..on and on. All in all id say if your interested in real chicago food in an old style way that there is no better place to go. read more

My wife has her clinic near by and o was super hungry so I decided to Yelp a pizza place. Came here and I was blown away by the ravioli and pizza and to top it off, the brioche gelato dessert was outstanding! Just looking at how this place is laid out tells the story of its success. It probably started out as a small italian grocery store, selling packaged food & staples from the old country. Grandma Freddy one day cooked up one of her famous pasta dishes & brought it to the store. A customer asked if he/she could buy a plate & the rest is history. The food items got so poular that they had to have a place for people to eat & wait for their order, so they built a room to acccomodate. They had to do it quickly becasue they forgot to add the connecting door! Over the years, the place just got busier & busier until it became a local institution. There's something to say about a place that serves you food on an orange cafeteria tray, on paper plates, slow in taking orders & makes you walk outside in the cold to get to the dining room...WITHOUT A COMPLAINT FROM ANY CUSTOMERS! Are you kidding me? Freddy's is an institution. You will not find a single thing to eat there that isn't delicious. My favorites are their Italian beef, which is probably among the best in Chicagoland the pepperoni bread, and the chicken Marsala. I've been eating Marsala at every restaurant in Chicago and I've never found one better, The pizza is great. The gelato is wonderful. The sausages are amazing... I brought my Dad there when he was visiting from California and fell in love with the place. The owner actually took the time to chat with him and talk about the food. He even posed for a picture with my Dad! Now every time he comes out to visit the first place we eat at for dinner is Freddy's. read more

RUDE RUDE RUDE.... I called today to place an order. I asked if they did delivery and with attitude the woman who answered said " no we don't do delivery".So I continue to place an order and I told her ok that's fine I will pick up my order, before I could even continue to place my order she says is the order for today? Ummm yes it's for today when else would it be for? So she tells me to call back in 10 min. Ten minutes? Who does that? So her and the owner start telling at me over the phone about how they have too many customers and that they are busy. Never have I ever had a pizza place not able to take an order because of "being too busy" and to be rude on top of it. Needless to say I will never try this restaurant due to their rude customer service they lost a customer. If the owner is reading this you really need to learn how to talk to customers. I came here to see what all the fuss was about. Upon walking in......it was love at first sight. Italian goodies everywhere. So many items to choose from. The place was jam packed with people so I was unsure of the ordering process here. A man working there must have picked up on it because he came over and asked me what I wanted and to just move past the crowd. I ordered a beef sandwich with giardinera and also a slice of their pizza. Both items were great. The sandwich was very large and very tasty. The pizza was old school. I have a pizza jones and this pizza was somewhat Neapolitan in nature and with hot soppressata as a topping, I'm all in. I liked what I had so much, I went back the next day, but earlier so I could maneuver around better. I ordered Chicken Marsala, Chicken Limon, Rolled eggplant stuffed with veal + pork, and sausage and peppers. Also picked up a loaf of the much talked about pepperoni bread. I liked everything. I really liked the Italian hot sausage which came with roasted peppers and potatoes. Was everything the best version I ever had? No. I have had better Chicken Limon but their version was still pretty good. I do not get the hype about the pepperoni bread. I just did not find it special. Overall it is a pretty special place. All sorts of Italian goods and Italian prepared foods. If I lived closer, I would definitely be here at least once a week. Cheers to all read more

i LOVE freddy's! it's like a baby food court inside a grocery store! the pizza here is so fresh, and a charming note is they make their own sausage! It's more of a pan pizza unless you're ordering a margherita pizza. I've had most of their menu (since I'm a fatty and went back sometimes even twice a week). Things I love: -Sausage pizza -arancini (rice ball stuffed with ground beef, breaded and baked) -ricotta stuffed gnocchi in vodka sauce -GELATTTOOOO and Italian ice (try the pistachio, don't be afraid!) -and there's a list of the flavors on the wall, sometimes they're not in the front case so just ask if they have it! -breaded pork sandwich with giardenara mmm...drool. -fresh bread, and i have yet to try their imported cheese There's no set line, so if you're there and they ask who's next, STEP UP or else they'll find someone else. In the freezer section of the grocery store, you can find their pastas, and the fridge has drinks and pasta sauces etc. Next door is an indoor and outdoor patio, so save room for dessert and enjoy! read more

After reading about Freddy's on Yelp, I thought I had to give it a go. It was awesome! Definitely the best gelato I have ever had. When I think that I could have bought a pint of ice cream in Wisconsin for what I paid for the small cup, I feel like they could have piled it a tad higher. I used to go to a place in Madison WI that was similar (minus the gelato) to Freddy's and had the most delicious smell when you first walked in. Freddy's does lack that smell, but they totally make up for it with 60 cent fried artichokes and pumpkin ravioli. I had a certain feeling watching some greasebags wearing tight white tank tops ordering their penne with marinara in Italian that I had come to the right place. 3 generations of my family have been going to Freddy's for pizza, italian ice and other tasty italian treats. Words really can't do this place justice, but I'll try to give future visitors some guidance. Service- No take a number system or credit cards accepted. It does make ordering a bit diffcicult at times, but if you avoid the lunch and dinner rush (12-2 p.m. and 5-6 p.m.), you should get your order with no issues. Food- In the words of Al Pacino in Donnie Brasco, Fuggetaboutit. Go for the stuffed gnocchi (they're like little potato pillows), margherita pizza, arancini with meat and salami in oil (if you've got some coin, the seafood salad is very good too). Really all the food is good and I can honestly say I've never had a bad meal here. The gelato is stellar as well (hazelnut and pistacchio are the winners here). Atmosphere- I love eating in the patio area next to the painting of the Italian Stallion on the wall. That being the said, the inside is small and can get cramped, but the outside does have plenty of tables and it is a great place to take someone on a date. If they're not impressed after a small plate sampler (seriously, order a little bit of everything and dig in) and a scoop of italian ice/gelato, they are not worth a second date. Freddy's is one of my favorite places to eat in ALL of Chicagoland. The food is delicious all of the time. You can choose any item on their menu and be pleased with the journey your tastebuds will go on. I have eaten nearly everything on their menu and depending on my mood they can each be my favorite on any given day. The lemon chicken is cooked perfectly, the pastas are just right in texture and the sauces are exquisite. If I'm feeling like a sandwich the meatball sub (with hot peppers of course) is so darn good. To top it all off, the staff and owners are AMAZING. It always feels like home when I walk through the door, everyone greets you as if you are walking into your mother's kitchen. Can't believe that I, as a card carrying Italian, have never been here before. This place is old school and very cool. We stopped by to pick up some Italian sausage for a bbq. My only complaint is that when we left, we had a ton of other stuff but no sausage! It's a small deli and square shaped, so the line wraps around the merchandise at the entrance. One of the staff will get all you want - from beginning to end. My hubby ordered the sausage, which she went in the back to cut and wrap. Then we got bufala mozzarella (yum!), parma di prosciutto (double yum!), and several types of Italian ice. Somehow in the mix, she forgot to give us the sausage, which we of course didn't realize till we got back home twenty minutes away. Oh well. The Italian ice was good, but I like Mario's better. Mario's has the chunks of fruit in the ice, which I prefer. They puree the melon at Freddie's when they make the ice - it's still delish, but I prefer the actual frozen chunks of melon in the ice. This place is almost considered a hidden gem. Authentic Italian food in a quaint neighborhood outside of Berwyn. They have outside eating which is really nice in the spring/summer. Gelato is amazing. The pasta is fresh and like you wish your mother made. I've not had anything that wasn't sublime. The pizza is delicious and so simple, whatever variety they have leftover will be worth your time. The fresh seafood salad is a pinnacle of gentle emulsion for delicate flavor and freshness that makes an unparalleled sandwich on a loaf of their fresh crusty bread, and perhaps a bit of their archetypal magnificent caprese salad. The gelato and Italian ices are outstanding, truly wonderful creations. I prefer the old-school lemon ice, but there are truffle and oreo gelatos for those of you who feel compelled to go a bit more decadent with your desserts. The prices couldn't be better for what they offer, and I always tip well because the service is amazing considering the mob you'll be up against. I've been here a few times and it's always been great. The dishes are always made with fresh ingredients and are not overly salty or overpowering. The chicken sorentina is pounded down and layered on top with eggplant, tomato, and is covered with cheese. The chicken limone is a flattened split chicken breast with a light lemon sauce. If you don't get there in time, the marsala will be gone! I'm still glad they make ricotta dumplings in a tomato cream sauce. They make a variety of pizza slices (deep pan sausage, artichoke, cheese) and fried items including mushrooms, arancini, and croquettes. There is typically street parking available on 16th Street. The breads are made fresh in the back and the store portion is well stocked with some less common items than a typical grocery store. The gelato is considered by many to be the best in Chicagoland and they always have a good variety, any time of year. There's a dining area to the side, but I usually take mine to go to enjoy at home, even though I'm nearly half an hour away. read more
