I just find this particular location weird and unsatisfactory and try my best to not have to stop here for groceries. They have an EV charging station out front and that brings me here a few times. The layout is different than other Fred Meyers and almost always they are either not fully stocked or don't have the right items . The fresh produce section is also dismal and the quality is just not at par with other Fred Meyers . I have had minimal Staff interaction so cant really comment on that .

My favorite area of this Fred Meyer's is the garden section. While smaller than the NE Weidler store's garden area, they often have the plants I need. The selection is vast and varied with many unique varieties. Hydrangeas in color combos I've never seen; bright shade loving plants like ablution and tuberose begonia; and premade shade and sun loving planters. Plus all the basic colorful annuals and perennials. It's super convenient to pull right up to this area, peruse the plants, and load up your car. The rest of the store is your basic Freddie's, carrying housewares, clothing, toys, furniture, kitchenware, paint, hardware, office supplies along with full grocery store. The layout is a bit confusing but that could be because I've been shopping at the NE Weidler store for 20 years. Staff is friendly and helpful. Store is clean, well stocked, lines move quickly, plenty of self checkouts . And if you live in this area, exponentially better than the Gateway location.

    Say hi to security!

However, coming from downtown, for some reason, I got off one stop early. All reason went out the window when I saw Ikea and the Cascades train stop. I got out there and ended up walking something like a half-mile to get to Target. With the help of a couple of extra OTC painkillers, I made it, and only had to sit down a couple of times. I appreciated that the parking lot had sidewalks and crosswalks. It's like so many other Target stores, although I have never seen a CVS inside a Target. (In Hawaii, CVS is still Longs Drugs and they are free-standing. I looked for a certain brand of travel-sized toothpaste; there wasn't any. The bin contained only regular-sized tubes. Many of the travel-size section bins were empty. I also wanted a certain brand of waterproof black mascara. It would be cheaper here than in Hawaii. (Strangely, mascara can't be shipped to Hawaii.) What I wanted was near the floor, making them tough to see and read, and none of the tags were right. I checked all the tubes, and none of them were what I was looking for. I'm now 0 for 2. Next I headed to the grocery section. The fresh food section, particularly the fresh meat section, seemed smaller than others I've seen. There wasn't much on sale, either. I didn't have a ton of stuff, but I was having trouble carrying it. I checked in two spots for a basket, and both were out. There were two human checkers on duty with a few people in line for both. The line for self-checkout was long. Staff responded and opened up two more lanes. The person helping me was pleasant and chatty. It was just a bummer they didn't have two things I was specifically looking for. It was still an okay experience, and I got some unintended exercise. We'll see how much my arthritic joints ache tomorrow.

I wanted to see if there is a Kmart near the area so I did a Yelp search for Kmart, this Portland Closeout store popped up. After glancing at Yelp photos, the 20 % off Yelp check in caught my eye, and the funny t-shirts, the ones on their profile pic. I asked my personal Uber driver ( my other half) to take me. You will not miss this place, there is a huge business sign and parking is available on both sides of the lot. I don't know where to begin looking, the store is clutter but it is a good clutter. There are tons and tons of stuff. Its like a one stop shop, Things you need in Chinatown and the flea market combined together. I am pretty sure you will find something you don't need but actually need here. Just like my experience here. I had fun looking around, Lets see this shop is HUGE! There are sandals, shoes, clothing for mens, womens, children, tshirts, hats, make up, hair accessories, phone accessories, even blankets. If you can't find what you are looking for, ask the owner, she is super friendly. I recall her name is Long. I had fun talking to her and she helped me find what I was looking for. As I mentioned I found 2 items that I didn't need but needed. I saw 2 hats , I didn't think I needed it but bought it for my mom and good friend. ( they both love hats!) I came to shop not looking for hats and not needing it but then I am so glad I bought them because my mom and good friend loved the hats. I also bought those funny saying shirts to give away as souvenirs. They are pretty funny! I was able to use my 20 percent Yelp check in and I am so happy to discover a new place in Portland. I noticed the blankets are cheap, they are the really soft blankets which comes in different color, prints, and even comes with a bag. I remember those blankets, during my childhood days my mom used to buy that blanket for us and I remember they cost more than what Portland Closeout sells them for. I am going to buy a blanket next time I visit. After paying for my items, Long mentioned that her husband is at the store across. Note: Portland Closeout is in 2 separate shop. The store is in front where Long's husband manage has all household items for your kitchen, home and garden which includes furniture, plants, even paintings. This store does look clutter as well, but its a good clutter!! I noticed children's bicycles out in front. This store has EVERYTHING!! Overall, I love how I discovered this place and I enjoyed my shopping experience here. I will be back. If you just moved to Portland, Please check out Portland Closeout, I guarantee you will find products for your new place and you can thank me later!! #101/100/2017

Our group of eight was able to find just about everything we wanted for our nearby Airbnb house for a long weekend in PDX. Where I'm from, Georgia and North Carolina, we have Kroger and Harris Teeter, respectively, instead of Fred Meyer. Fred Meyer and Harris Teeter belong to Kroger. All three banners are different. Fred Meyer differentiates itself by having the biggest stores. It's a hypermarket - supermarket and department store in one - instead of just a grocery store like Kroger and Harris Teeter. In this sense, it's more like Walmart. For example, during our visit to this Fred Meyer store, I saw an entire department dedicated to "Northwest Style" men's clothing, featuring brands from Carhartt to Levi's. Walking around that section, I felt like I was in Belk or Dillard's. You don't see that at Kroger or Harris Teeter. Also, this Fred Meyer has a garden center and jewelry store. We bought groceries -- wine, milk, beer, Gatorade, Oreo and Keebler cookies, Simply Orange orange juice, Tostitos and Calidad corn tortilla chips, salsa, guacamole, bananas, oranges, Doritos, Poppi (soft drinks), Starbucks coffee, Silk Almond Creamer, bacon, bread, syrup, frozen pizzas, eggs, avocado, potatoes, and more; you know, the provisions middle-aged men need for breakfast and snacking in a short-term homestay from an online marketplace. The shopping center has plenty of parking. There were a few homeless people outside of the attached Starbucks. Security was stationed inside the entrance/exit we used, near Starbucks. To use the restroom here, you need to punch in a door code. Ask an employee for the code. If you're visiting from out of town like we were and are a Kroger Plus or Harris Teeter VIC member, you can use your Kroger or Harris Teeter membership here for deals and discounts. Vice versa, Fred Meyer Rewards members can use their Fred Meyer memberships at any Kroger or Harris Teeter store.

I try to stop in several times a year to see what's new, when I need a special outfit or a gift for a friend. This week I bought a pair of Mia slides that are waterproof, perfect for after my swims, and they have a Birkenstock footbed making them super comfortable with support for my feet. Love them! Just $30 and in a very on trend rose gold color with white buckles. Wore them to the pool the next day and a little girl complimented me! Too cute. My only complaint is that the store is so packed with items that when trying on shoes, there was nowhere to put the boxes while trying them on in front of the mirror. A sales clerk ended up vclearing off a stool so I could place my potential shoes there as I tried on different sizes and styles. Heck, I can't even say that this IS a secret to anyone but myself, so I may be the only one in town who was missing out...until this last weekend, anyway. It was a TikTok video, of all things, that pointed us to the deli within (Aunt Tillie's), but from there, after downing a couple of sammies, we had the pleasure of checking out the various shops (many of which seem to have...let's say...eclectic and unstable operating hours), but are still fun to browse: a vintage store, a Himalayan goods store, and others. But the real draw is the antique "mall" co/op running in the basement: a sprawling labyrinth of curated collections of the riches of yesteryear, laid out in such a way to maximize foot traffic, and capture the attention of eye and mind: vintage clothing, furniture, home décor, movies, comics, collectibles, personal items, books, postcards and a whole lot more: enough to keep a treasure hunter like me busy poking around for quite a while! I wish there were more places like this, but based on the fact that I didn't know this existed until two days ago, perhaps there are! Located one block east of NE Sandy and the iconic Hollywood Theatre, the large light blue sign that says 42 Station is also iconic for this neighborhood. Or Antique Valley on the lower level; a large space of multiple vendors selling their wares. The primary reason I come here is the Postal Annex. It's just so convenient with parking on the street out front and friendly service, Even though I've moved to SW I still come here frequently. They only accept cash so be forewarned. The 2nd reason I come is Aunt Tillie's Deli. If I'm here during lunch hours or need a sandwich for a picnic, this is the place! They make a delicious and satisfying sandwich and homemade soups that hit the spot! I used to visit Linda's Upholstery whenever I needed custom pillows, a seat cushion or a couch completely redone but she is no longer there. Bummer. She is the master of her craft and affordable. The Himalayan Gift store, located on the left when you walk in, never seems to have anyone there, but they are still in business. They sell clothing, candles, souvenirs and other very miscellaneous items. There is also a hair salon, another antique shop and a Nordic Home shop on the first floor. When I say shop, we are talking a very, very small footprint. The size of a small bedroom. Like I said, The 42nd Street Station is an unusual blend of stores under one roof that fits right into this neighborhood. It's not a destination or a place for out of neighborhood folks, but for those who do live nearby or did, like me, it's an essential part of the community.
