The only reason I'm giving this place three stars is because of the view and our waiter. The food sucked my wife had the ravioli which had an off putting flavor. I had the perch which is only served on Saturday. Being served one day a week is the best thing about it. That way people can only be disappointed one day a week. Horrible, that batter was not good it just wasn't good. Aaa ooo look it comes with truffle fries. That comes pre packaged frozen and we cook them, suck. Learn how to make good fries in house and put some truffle oil on them. That's what I thought I was getting. Then to top it off they gave me generic ketchup. For starters you can't beat the view Fratellos offers. Right on the water adding automatic ambiance to any meal. The service by Morgan was stellar! We asked for him on our second visit however he wasn't working. He is an asset to the restaurant. The Goddess salad is enough for four people to share as we did. Love the fact they have a gluten free menu for main dishes however did fall short on gluten free desserts. That's why only three desserts are shown instead of four. Everyone was pleased with their dishes and we there where zero complaints on the first visit. We went back two days later because the food was so tasty. One inconsistency would be the Spanish octopus was not as sizzling and there was only one piece. Was told it was by weight however that couldn't have been the case. I had to pay extra for a second piece to equal what my colleague received on her plate. The waiter was nice but not as friendly as Morgan and may be slightly new. For that I gave this restaurant a 4 out of 5. I hope they add something other than pudding to their gluten free menu. I would recommend a nice berry mix with cream and crushed pistachios. Service was excellent, beautiful location and outside patio. They changed the menu and we were not happy about that. Had many favorites that are not available now. Tried the short rib pasta and found it to be more like beef stroganoff and not much flavor. Had a Caesar side salad and the presentation was nice but not practical to eat . Romaine cup leaves with a drizzle of dressing and they added bacon bits? Why? No shaved Parmesan. The lettuce cups were hard to cut up and splashed dressing when attempting to make bite size pieces. My friend had salmon on Caesar salad and it was the same salad with salmon on top of the lettuce cups and more bacon bits? Why again? Her salmon was very salty and she tried to soak it in lemon and scrape some of it off the top. Very disappointing and don't think this will be top of our list to return. read more

We are new to the area and Fratellos is one of our favorite spots. We never get tired of eating right next to the river. I love that in the winter they have illuminated igloos to sit in outside. The night started off not so great, first time there with my boyfriend who's never been. Kind of confusing because there was someone in front of us waiting for a table upstairs we were informed and we wanted to be up there to enjoy the entertainment on this night. We were told we could sit at the bar to wait. So we sat at bar and ordered a drink and waited for a table, however we found out you need to get a pager which I didn't realize or was not told this. So we decided we would just eat at the bar, no biggie, asked this man who was also bartendering for a menu. This man was very rude to us because we asked a question about the menu , he said rudely we had it out of place, which we didn't do honestly that's how it was when we received it. My bf really wanted to leave because he eas so mad at how he treated us..but then the hostess came over to ask if we still wanted a table. After calming my bf down and convincing him to stay we went to our table. I think it was maybe just a misunderstanding on the hostesses part because she definitely came through for us eventually. I will say after that our waitress Ashley was amazing, very personable, and down to earth. We had a much better experience. The food and drinks were so good. I will definitely go back but I will definitely avoid that male bartender, didn't catch his name( black hair & mustache) He is obviously a miserable person and needs better mannerisms when dealing with people that are new to this establishment. read more

We eat at a large variety of restaurants across this country. Not many restaurants have struck us with such unique of a location as this one. The hydroelectric dam sparks curiosity, and the surrounding wildlife is very entertaining. The floor plan and openness of the restaurant definitely sets a comfortable atmosphere. The restaurant was not busy when we were there, but I am sure that when it is you would not even feel crowded in the slightest bit. High ceilings and windows truly open up the establishment. From uniqueness to its own interesting personality, Fratellos boasts a quirky atmosphere with a fantastically intriguing view. Our service was very welcoming and our waiter was extremely polite and interactive. He guided us through the menu and knew the dishes very well. He was a great conversationalist and very kind, helpful, and polite. We wish the food matched its uniqueness. At first glance, one can recognize that this restaurant takes great pride in the freshness of their produce. We first ordered the bruschetta and cream of corn soup. The bruschetta was light and refreshing. The tomatoes were clearly very fresh and had a phenomenally sweet profile. The bread seemed like it was just pulled out of the oven and it was soft and chewy, yet the bite began with an interesting crisp. The only negative aspect of this appetizer would be the use of more Parmesan that drowned out the mozzarella, our main enjoyment with bruschetta. The freshness and flavor profile of the tomatoes definitely tied this dish together. The cream of corn soup was enjoyable. Classic. Nostalgic. We joked that if Wisconsin was a taste, it would be this soup. The cheese curds riddled through were an intriguing surprise. In our experience, tons of restaurants have great appetizers and then we are let down by the main courses. We tried both the wall eye and the sirloin with gnocchi. The gnocchi did not taste house made, and if it was, it was definitely on its last leg. The sirloin was cooked nicely. Appeared to be a quality cut. The walleye was ill-prepared in the manner that it was not deboned very well. Wall eye is known to be difficult to debone, but we would not expect this from a restaurant with such great reviews. The breading was on the heavier side. The fish was moist and cooked well, but the flavor profile of the fish was drowned out by the heaviness of the breading. Both the broccolini and potatoes were lacking, yet you could tell the produce was definitely farm to table. We finished off our meal with the chocolate cheesecake. We honestly chose this dessert because our waiter said it was the last one that they had. It was a decent cheesecake. It had a nice chocolate profile. It was on the tad dry side, but the dessert was enjoyable. All in all, we definitely give this restaurant big points for atmosphere and service. The appetizers and fresh produce were the highlight of this meal. Definitely will give this restaurant another try the next time we are in the area. read more

Multiple groups that arrived after us have been served & already left. We waited an hour and 15 minutes for our food, including an appetizer. Not once did our waitress come to check on us or refill drinks, and our food was cold when it came out. After speaking to someone else and being told our ticket had only been in around 25 minutes, we knew she had waited quite a while to put our ticket in. Bar area is nicer than the dining area, which has window views of the river but otherwise reminds me of a mall food court's furnishings. Loud pop music. My father liked his Fox River Hamburger and clam chowder. My ahi salad was pretty pointless. And had a 5" hair in it (!). The server offered to provide another salad. But a few thin 1-inch slivers of raw ahi + a few pieces of cucumber/carrot/radish and a bland agar-thickened sweet sesame dressing (the salad arrived without it---I had to remind server it came with dressing) on a big pile of huge pieces of frisée lettuce is really disappointing, especially for $22. I went here for dinner after a work meeting in Appleton. This restaurant is right on a river with a good view of a dam and some ducks. The building itself is interesting and is worth seeing. Service is excellent although I arrived at 5:00 for dinner so it was not busy - only a few tables occupied. The food itself was good, but not excellent. I ordered white chicken chili and seared scallops. The chili was good, although it could have used some heat. The seared scallops are not as good. They needed a bunch of salt and I was hungry again in a couple of hours. There were three scallops and some vegetables. This is not a generous portion for the price ($27). I would probably go back although it's a little overpriced. I bought the wife a green goddess sandwich, which she enjoyed even though she does not normally like chicken. read more

Came up from Chicago for a family event. Decided to try this spot as it is waterfront. Our waiter Tony was awesome and the plates my wife and I both had were fantastic. I had the short rib pasta. Probably the best pasta I have ever had! Wife is a little vegetarian and the happily modified there chicken pasta ala vodka without chicken or pancetta without batting an eye. We had such a great experience on our last visit for the Sunday brunch that we had to come for dinner with friends visiting from Michigan. Again it was a fantastic time. Lexi our server guided us through menu choices and we quickly selected the cheese curd appetizer and the spinach artichoke with Parmesan and crostini along with cocktails while we visited and tried to narrow down our entree choices. The food arrived quickly and was delicious. The pasta special of roasted shrimp over linguine with creamy garlic sauce was a huge hit and we all had to sample it. I had the pan fried walleye (perfectly cooked) that was served with cracked creamer potatoes and green beans. The other notable dish was the char-grilled chicken with melted Brie, prosciutto, and fig spread served with carmelized tomatoes. Every meal was a taste delight. Afterwards we went to the bar for Brandy Alexanders and more cocktails. Matt and Jake were so friendly and we engaged in a great discussion of the local trends with Rye whiskeys, we shared our experiences of trying to re-create Fratello's Kansas City Shuffle after our last visit for brunch, and finally we learned the true secret of Tanquery Ten for the gin neophytes. It was a fantastic evening with meals and libations spot on wonderful. The venue at Fratellos is so beautiful with the vista on the water rapids (our table looked right onto the waves) and the friendly, knowledgeable staff elevates the experience so you really feel like you are enjoying a dinner out with the Fratellos family. I was disappointed with my dining experience at Fratellos. I ordered the chicken ceasar salad and warm bread. What I received was not a chicken ceasar, but something very salty and I couldn't eat it. I'm guessing this is the best restaurant in Appleton (this is what the locals tell me) and I agree -- it's wonderful! The location by the fox river is gorgeous -- loved the exposed brick and big windows from which you can watch the ducks, herons and bald eagles. The service is so friendly and genuine. They have local beer on tap and I got the blueberry ale (which had fresh whole blueberries in it). My sister got a hot toddy that was delicious. I got the walleye which comes breaded and fried and with broccolini and mashed potatoes. Yum, super good!! My family all loved their meals too -- one got the salmon and another the salmon salad. First time back in two years to enjoy a glass of wine and stunning view out the bar windows of the raging Fox River. Our practice had been to not order food after a lackluster menu in the past. Being hungry, listening to the advice of the pleasant bartender, and seeing that the menu had become more interesting.... we ordered some of the mussels on special. They were super good with just the right amount of oil, garlic, and seasoning. Super good. Ok. So we decide to push on. I ordered seared octopus, which was again excellent. Perfect texture, presentation, and prep. My wife stayed more standard with a sandwich which was also tasty. Fratellos has really stepped it up. New Chef obviously, who is doing a nice job adding interest and quality to the menu. What had been a restaurant which maybe leaned a little too much on it's venue (which is superb), now has a kitchen to match. That's a killer app. With these parts in place, Fratellos probably is now the top pick in Aplleton/Fox Valley for special occasions, treating guests visiting town, and just enjoying great beers and small plates while taking in a beautiful view. My boyfriend and I were in town for the Green Bay Packers home opener and we saw this place and decided to check it out because it was one of the few places in Appleton that wasn't a chain restaurant. I am glad that we made a reservation well in advance because it was homecoming night so the place was crawling with dolled up high-schoolers. The reservation process was through the website and was very simple. We arrived a little early so we hung out at the bar until our table was ready. We each ordered a cocktail and the bartender was super friendly and the drinks were fancy but pretty underwhelming. I ordered the slushy dark and stormy and it felt like mostly ice and my boyfriend's drink was a gin concoction of some sort that was just okay. They have an excellent wine selection so if I ever went back, I'd go that route. The restaurant itself is on multiple levels and overlooks a river of some sort. It was pretty dark so we couldn't really see the water but it was still really pretty. The parking lot was a little tight and I am not sure if they had valet or not so you should prepare to spend a little extra time looking for a spot. The food itself was pretty good. Our server brought some bread out and we started in on that but my boyfriend accidentally knocked it into the floor so we asked for a second one. The first one was warm and tasty but the second one was cold and hard which was disappointing. I ordered the ahi tuna and it was pretty good. My boyfriend got a steak that he really enjoyed. I felt like the menu had a lot to offer. The prices seemed appropriate for the ambience and food selections. The service was mediocre. I realize they were very busy but the service felt really slow. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to people traveling to Appleton who want to try something other than the typical chain restaurants. My wife and I stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. We were given the option of sitting in the bar or dining room and we made a great choice with the dining room. We sat by the window looking out toward the river and the autumn colors. Our waitress was Emily who was friendly and efficient. My wife ordered a Sauvignon blanc and I ordered a local beer. Wine was good but not cold enough and the beer was good. My wife ordered a Thai chicken flatbread which was very good and I ordered a seafood po'boy with a cup of white chili. Friday perch fish fry was very nice - perch appeared to be fresh and were moist and not over-breaded. French fries were seasoned nicely. Rye bread was an authentic touch. Portion was generous. Friday salmon special was outstanding! It featured a sweet, spicy, smoky sauce that did not overpower the fish. The "fall" risotto included cranberries, apples and pancetta. The broccoli stalks were slender and tender, but not mushy. Cannolis were a delight - they appeared to be filled with whipped cream, marscapone, and chocolate chips and had a chocolate base underneath the pastry. Much lighter taste than the ricotta-based cannolis we are used to from our decade in New England. Chocolate mousse cake was a bit dry, but it was rescued by the vanilla ice cream on the side. Service was attentive, but not obtrusive. Art on the wall and hanging from the ceiling gives some personal flair. Our table gave a great view of the Fix River - a nice touch. Will return! read more
