Not satisfied, I came across Frank's and don't plan on going anywhere else. You can tell that the place is special the moment you step foot in the door and are greeted. Further, Frank and team take the time to talk you through the process. He leverages his experience and gives you recommendations based on your input. Bonus: brief history lesson (~40 years in the same sloop block). Double bonus: flat-fell seam alterations (identical to your original seams). I left feeling like a million bucks ... but only spent $230 on 7 shirts (darts + sides) and 2 pants (taper). read more

Came in asking to fix torn pockets. The gentleman told me it's tearing all over and I should just replace the lining because it's too tight. I agreed for $150. Picked up the jacket but they wrapped it up nicely so I didn't check the work. Brought it home and found they just fixed a pocket instead of doing the whole lining. I tried calling in to discuss the issue but was just told to come back in. I said I won't be able to come in till a couple days later and was told it was fine. Came in and was told there was nothing they can do. He can do the job again for $160 (more than the previously agreed amount ). The only receipt I was given was a stub that just says $170 and the items that were supposed to be repaired. They need better receipts at the minimum. I've been going to this shop for alterations for years, but my most recent experience has made me stop going altogether. I dropped off 6 pairs of pants for a simple fix, and what I got back was worse than before I brought them in. I had to leave them for a full month for a redo, and the end result was still poor quality. Customer service was frustrating throughout -- my time wasn't respected, and there was little accountability for the mistakes. From what I understand, the shop was sold and is now run by a man named Reynoso who also has another location on Clybourn Ave. It's clear the new ownership doesn't have the same care for craftsmanship or customers that the original owner, Frank, did. Frank's shop used to have genuinely talented seamstresses and tailors who took pride in their work. The new staff doesn't seem to have that same skill or training, and it shows in the finished product. If you're looking for reliable, quality alterations, I'd think twice before bringing your clothes here. It's not the same business it used to be, and I'd hate for others to have their clothes ruined the way mine were. read more

I was disappointed to find that pricing is not clearly posted or communicated upfront. In my experience, the charges seem excessive for the services being provided. For example, I was quoted $98 simply to hem a dress, which I believe is significantly higher than the average market rate for that type of alteration. Great timing and good work. I just wish we would have caught all of the alterations the dress needed. Was quoted $48 to pull the dress in near the zipper and apparently that was why it was so expensive. We did not catch needing to pull the top of my dress in due to the side being pulled in and was then quoted ANOTHER $38. I will be safety pinning my dress because that's ridiculous. They were nice people but missed details I would think an adequate tailor would catch the first time and wouldn't charge almost the same price for the second fix. I have gone to Frank's for 20 years. I followed him over three location moves. He sold the store a few years ago, including the name and all the celebrity photos on the walls. The new owners let all Frank's workers go. They do an ok job. However, they have doubled, and in some cases tripled, the prices. I took a coat in to have a button sewn back on (no judgment please), and I had the button. The quote was $15.00, and the could not do in right away (I was willing to wait, but was told I had to come back in a few days). Are you kidding me? I will not go back. read more

Frank has retired!! Thinking that I would continue to patronize the shop I stopped in to have a pair of slacks, no cuff hemmed. The gentleman measured the slacks and I waited for the receipt . Wow !! Was I shocked when he said "THIRTY Dollars !" My mouth dropped. $30 dollars!!! No way and he went into how much things have changed and de dropped it to $25. BTW. More if you wanted back the same week. After leaving , the more I thought about it the more I thought about going back to get my pants. I did just that! Turned around and back I went. The guy, who resembles Raymond, who worked with Frank for years, had a real attitude about my requesting the return of my pants. Excuse me sir... May I have a hanger and a bag ?? I gave them my daughter flower girl dress for MY wedding and told them I needed clip on buttons for her detachable train to be added. These people ripped off her bow. And sewed down her detachable train! Her bow was attached with a got damn safety pin !!!! I thought I could trust this place because I've been multiple times in the past! I was doing last min wedding shopping and had my dad to pick up my items . On top of that my dress I had them take in my waist ONLY ! Now why is one pocket normal and the other one backwards !!!!! This place used to be owned by Frank and he was an amazing tailor in fact, all of the people that worked for him were amazing. But this place has changed hands and is horrible now. I took a suit there to be tailored to fit me for a special occasion only for them to screw it up royally. A suit that cost me 600.00 to purchase they charged me 325.00 to do the necessary alterations. They did the exact opposite of what I asked for, so when I came in to pick it up and saw how wrong it was, they said they'd repair it. When I came back the second day to see if they were able to fix what they screwed up, of course they had removed so much material it was irreparable, and looked even worse. The jacket that was once a half a size too big is now too small for my arms, shoulders, chest and back. I can't wear it. I'm not sure who's measurements they altered to, but it certainly was not mine. To add insult to injury, the manager who was hiding in the back and wouldn't come out, magically calls and tells me he isn't there to see the damaged clothes, the same one he saw the day before... so he says because he can't see it, he can't remunerate me for the damaged suit nor did they want to give me a refund of the deposit I paid. Needless to say, I'll be following up with civil pursuits. This was not just a tailor shop, Frank and Sam tailored all my suits and my families clothing as well for the past 45 years. This is a huge disappointment and inconvenience. I would advise anyone against allowing this shop to now handle even a simple hem. If you do decide to take anything to the shop to be worked on, give them as a little a deposit as possible knowing that you're probably not gonna get it back if they screw up your clothes and secondly try on whatever you take them and make sure before you leave that there are no extra rips, tears, uneven seems or anything else in befitting what you asked for... read more

Im not a fan of the way most people dress these days. Athlielesiure when they're not even working out, all the people with their gym shoes and hoodies the hoi polloi. Anyways this place is buzzing!! Sowing machines whizzing, a guy making suggestions do a gentleman trying on a suit. Sooo many garments. Got a button re sewed on a coat done very quickly. Also got my pant leg recuffed. Didn't happen as soon as the coat button but was done in under an hour as I waited. Felt I was charged a good rate. I had contacted other places for some day alterations and the prices they quoted me seemed a little unreasonable. They don't have computers in the store but they know their business. read more

Bought a suit jacket a couple years ago and lost a few pounds. Suit jacket was way too big on me and looked ridiculous. The owner Frank is very genuine , hard working person . I have had some sheets mended here and basic simple mending type things which where good . But , also have had favorite ,sentimental items destroyed . I asked to have. a zipper repaired on a skirt , they cut out a huge patch of 4 inches in diameter ALL around the entire zipper and replaced the material with a sweatshirt type material that did not even match the cotton brioadcloth material of my skirt It was so bad , even a 5 year old would never do anything so jaw droopingly , awful . . It was like it was done on purpose so I would not longer be a customer there . Next they again did something , again , so illogical , it only makes sense that someone did this out of pure spite . I asked them to taper a pair of knee length peddle pusher pants . They cut the pant in the thickest part of the thigh , making a very unflattering horizontal seam was running straight across the thickest part of my thigh , and the bottom was NOT tapered but went out like a BELL shape. I was so upset , livid with anger , and wanting to weep which I did in my car and then at home , I did not want to make a scene ,. I just walked out not saying a word . To this very day it upsets me . I still have both destroyed garments and may post photos . There is a perosn there that just hated me , I could feel this employees energy Plain as day . I always was very polite and respectful , friendly ,so it makes no sense why someone would purposely destroy this items in such a horrid manner . I am very specific and guess this did not resonate here. Frank offered to reimburse me for the pants .Which was nice , but I declined . Maybe later I will tale photos to show these haneous , awful , mistakes , the way in which it was done , is pure spitefulness to purposely wreck the item and that feat surely was achieved . Be very careful coming here . I do not like there being a middleman translating what alterations you want done . Important specifics often can be lost in translation . it is best to speak DIRECTLY to the person who'll be working on your much loved , sentimental garment. Here there is a counter person who makes notes and then you do not have direct contact with the person who will be working on your items. I have not been a customer here in years and sadly would not recommend this place , despite the owner Frank who is a very sweet , authentic person . based on my very horrible experience I had . The first time I came here it was for jeans to be hemmed. The second time jeans hemmed and taken in at the waist. This last time, I brought in a dress. I purchased a dress a while back, lost a little weight, then tried it on again days before my brother in law's wedding. I was swimming in it. Yay for the weightloss, but now 1 of 2 things needed to happen, either I needed to purchase a new dress or have the dress taken in. I walked into franks, had the dress fitted to me and then threw myself on his mercy to have the dress done in less than 24hrs. It was finished on time and the alteration were great! They did an excellent job on the suit coats, which had be taken in on the sides. The pants was also excellently done. When they finished my suits looked & felt like they were tailored made. The extremely high turnover, antiquated clothes retrieval system and Frank's explosive and unpredictable rudeness are unacceptable. This USED to be a premier tailoring shop. Today, deadlines are often not regarded, clothes are missing for months, some clothes are returned with no alterations and Frank is, at times, combative with customers. I pull out my item I show him what alterations I wanted done.So he gives me the (overly priced!)fee. ( I was like ok fine) I was told the item would be prepared & ready the following Thursday at noonish.So Friday comes ( I even have them A extra Day)Mind you giving them close to a week to get my item done & ready for pick. So I'm greeted with the most disrespectful (nastiest attitude!)by the clerk (Sonia T) At first they didn't have a idea about my item.(Seriously) Everyone was looking around clueless.So they Eventually found my item. The garment wasn't even! Fixed AT All! They used the Excuse that the seamstress was out sick for 3 days. Now mind you they had my garment for going on 6 to 7 business days close to a week! & during the duration of the 6 to 7 business days I didn't even receive a (Phone Call) to inform me.That my items were not prepared or needed more time to be alternated.This is very unacceptable I explained! I did not provide a day that I needed my items back. I informed them that it was not urgent so they provided me that a date. When I came to pick up my items, I was told that it was not ready and would be ready later in the evening. No phone call. Nothing to make up for the screw up and inconvenience. I spent a lot of money. Never again can I provide Frank's Alterations & Tailoring with my money. Totally disrespectful. By the way, I seek alterations frequently. Im vertically challenged and had ordered some maxi dresses for my cruise but they were way too long when I got them and we were leaving 3 days later. Frank's is absolutely FABULOUS! If you're looking for a tailor where you can be pushy and treated like a princess, please.... do the rest of us a favor and go somewhere else. (Looking at you Becky P - Frank altered your pants for free, you got them early, on the same afternoon he mentioned, and you're STILL writing a 1 star review? Girl, pull yourself together!) Frank is amazing. He's quick to mark what needs to be altered, then passes it along to his expert staff for a very speedy delivery! Shane brought 3 of his suits in and I brought a dress. Shane had of COURSE purchased a new suit and needed it tailored for a wedding in a week and a half. Frank offered to have all of the suits plus my dress done in time for the wedding! On his recommendation, I called a few days later to check on the status of our attire, and he had them done that afternoon! Did I mention that this was our first time stopping in?? Frank went absolutely above and beyond for us, explaining to Shane the difference between cuffed and non-cuffed pants, why pleats require them, and a few other traditional tailoring things that neither I nor Shane were familiar with. Now, the BEST part about Frank's is the camaraderie and atmosphere. This is the kind of place you could hang out in all day. Customers are friends, some old friends, some new. The service is top knotch with a few jokes and a lot of conversation mixed in. This place gets 5 stars for a couple of reasons in my book. One, the owner Frank shook my hand and called his business partner over to meet me as well because I was a new customer. You don't see this kind of treatment in many places. They also get 5 stars because they are very reasonably priced compared to all of the other tailors in Chicago. Now this place isn't for everyone. Frank has been in business for over 40 years I believe. He and the entire place have a very old school feel. If you are the kind of person who likes old barber shops and instigating some friendly banter you will like it. If you don't want the modern dry cleaner experience or tailoring or something that makes you feel very vip, you won't like this place. I had two suits recently tailored here. Both fit great and were finished quickly. I took them in on Monday and picked them up on Wed. They know what they are doing here. read more

I have not had a lot of alterations done in my lifetime. I had to quickly get a bridesmaid dress altered for my sister's wedding. I had to have about 3 inches shortened off the bottom, the top taken in, and a weird seam fixed. It was all less than $50. I was anticipating much more! I was pleasantly surprised! The total time I spent in the shop was maybe 15 minutes. Even when busy, Frank gets all of this clients in and out. He has a wonderful personality, and made sure to take care of me.
