I love the Fox. It's small and intimate, has an incredible sound system and books the best of local, national and international talent. Rolling Stone magazine and Westword agree with me (best venue for at least 2 years running.) Built in 1926 as a movie theatre, The Fox recently gained landmark status from the City of Boulder. My favorite show there was a Mindy Smith, Cake, John Mayer combo. Followed the next night by Jamie Cullum (British jazz singer/pianist), Rachel Yamagata, and Glenn Phillips of Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Other famous artists in the history of The Fox include Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, Method Man, members of the Wu Tang Clan, and many more. As you can see the venues are pretty ecclectic and vary a lot from night to night. read more

Came here to see Cornmeal: who knew that a Bluegrass band could be such rockstars! It's an excellent venue. Lots of space and plenty of room for everyone. There are places to sit, is plenty of alcohol stations, and the lighting work was simply excellent. We could walk in right before the show and buy tickets. They also seem to accommodate under-21 folk. read more

The Fox does a great job booking some fantastic artists- I just moved to the area, but I always find at least two shows that I would like to see per month. I love that their ticket prices are usually in the $10-15 range, as opposed to some venues in Denver that are around 10 dollars more expensive (i.e. the Fillmore or Ogden). There are just a few things that keep this venue from being 5 stars. One, the employees come off as being a mix between babysitters and cops. When I saw Emancipator, the whole night there was a woman whose sole job was to make sure girls weren't bringing their drinks into the bathroom. I would understand this concept if our purses weren't thoroughly inspected upon entry, but I digress. Secondly, I don't appreciate the high percentage of drunk frat bros being loud, obnoxious, and trying to pick fights. We were stationed particularly close to about 6 of these guys who were screaming at each other over the music the entire time, and shooting a pocket laser at girls' boobs. Face palm. It's a bit of a drive from my house, but I know I'll be back soon! read more

Wow, I have seen some great shows here. Fun venue, great location, right in the heart of the hill in boulder. They get some great names as well. It seems like a lot of other small concert venues that I have been to. A little dark, a little dingy, a moderate bar, they even do some under 21 shows for the young ones in your life. The vibe there can sometimes be a bit strange, but on a whole, one of my favorite places to go see a show. The ticket prices are pretty reasonable usually. Always worth checking out the lineup and seeing if there is something that works for your tastes, and sometimes it is a blast to just go on a night when you are free and tickets are reasonable. read more

i love the fox! the overall venue is great. amazing sound quality, big performers, great lights and fun atmosphere. however, am giving this venue 2 stars because the staff/ bouncers/ security are EXTREMELY RUDE. one of the employees stormed into the bathroom to find multiple girls in one stall, peeing together (normal of groups of girls) and belligerently screamed at them to get out of the stall as she maybe suspected they were doing drugs together? not sure... afterwards she ordered each woman in the bathroom line to enter each vacant stall alone, and watching them do so. this employee made it a hostile environment and was taking away from everyone's experience at the fox. throughout the night i witnessed the same woman, again belligerently yelling at customers for doing practically nothing, threatening to kick them out or call the police! at the end of the day, every one visiting a concert venue is simply trying to see a performer they like and have a good time, however the employees at the fox theatre completely impose a negative vibe on the space and take away from EVERYONES experience. read more

This is one of my favorite places to see a concert. I've had the luck to catch big-name acts here and there is nothing like seeing a band that can sell out a stadium play a place like the Fox. Service at the bar could be better, but it's really no different than any other place. The bathrooms could stand more frequent cleaning, but it's not a big deal. The theater is a cool venue but the employees are terrible here. They have power issues and feel the need to be rude to all of their customers just because they can. I am 20 and went here last year when I was 19. I had not consumed ANY alcohol that night and they tried to tell me I was intoxicated and was not allowed in. I ended up calling the police and telling the officer to come to the venue to breathalyze me to prove to them I hadn't consumed any alcohol. I handed the phone to the lady at the door and she pretended like she didn't know what I was talking about and hung up the phone. I had to call the police on myself to get into a show I was sober for and missed nearly half of the show. They will never get my business again until they reevaluate their staff. read more

This venue is fairly small, but fun if it gets packed for a big headliner. My issue is with the bouncers of this establishment. I have had numerous negative experiences with the bouncers here. Story: I attended Feed Me at the fox and was stopped at the door to check my ID (totally normal). However, the bouncer at the time insisted that I was far too drunk to enter the venue, when I was STONE COLD SOBER. I tried to explain to this ignoramus that I was sober, but for whatever reason this individual just could not grasp the fact that he was completely wrong. He almost went so far as to not let me into the venue, at which point I asked to speak with his supervisor. He let me in after I asked for his supervisor (of course), but did not get his supervisor as requested. I know many people that have been to the fox and had an issue with the bouncers here for things similar to this. read more

I had an awesome experience at the Fox Theatre last night with Through the Roots and The Green performing. Parking could be easily found along the streets and there is a small parking lot nearby too. Getting will call tickets not purchased through the fox theatre itself was very easy as well, all that was needed was your drivers license and the credit card used to purchase. The venue is pretty spacious and open with 2 bars. The photos of all the past performers were pretty awesome too! read more

My rating of 2 goes out to the guys behind the front bar. I personally witnessed all of you being rude/ignoring female customers to take drink orders from guys first. In a time when I think it's extremely important for all of us to be kind to one another, these men decided to personally discriminate against the female customers. The Fox is probably the most popular venue in Boulder. It's right on the hill and a lot of pop culture-ish shows get played to the kids going to CU. It's a bit tacky and small, and lamely sectioned off. When it's packed, you have no room to dance. The aisles on the sides make it hard to enjoy the acoustics. It's ideal for young college kids who live on the hill and can walk home afterwards. I'm giving it a 3 partly because it's been way too hyped by the folks giving it 5's, that's just ridiculous. Was extremely disappointed in my overall experience at The Fox. I went to a show last night and about halfway through I go to the bathroom. As i'm leaving, my friend and I decide we want to sit on the couches near the bar. As we're walking towards them the bigger female bouncer grabs my arm and says "I'm escorting you out of the building and you will not be able to re enter" and cuts my wristband off and puts x's on my hands. Confused, I asked why. And she just goes "intoxication" and kicks me out. I had two beers the entire night and was definitely not intoxicated. I really like the fox theater, the bartenders and most employees are great. Sound, also is on point. However the security is rude as they push through crowds and get confrontational when you dont let them shove past you. One of the security members shoved me after he tried to push me out of the way walking the crowd, telling me "I work here, move." What happened to treating your customers nicely? Absolutely worst venue I've ever been to. Rudest staff. Upon walking in they asked me to lift up my shirt because they thought there was something in my bra when it was actually just the wire. They still weren't convinced after that and asked me to show more?? After I eventually got in and was fuming, my boyfriend and I were there for maybe 2 minutes before we were aggressively kicked out. I took one sip of his drink (granted I was in the wrong) and within seconds 2 men and a woman were behind us yelling for us to get out. I apologized to them and admitted I was in the wrong and to please let him stay and I will leave. She got in our faces and screamed for us to both leave. We complied and showed no resistance yet she proceeded to scream at us and threatened to call the cops. This was our second time going to the Fox, and while it is a great venue for concerts, we were extremely frustrated with the security/bouncers. We were able to re-enter the last concert we attended a couple weeks ago, but after being there for 20 mins and going out to smoke, we were unable to re-enter. The inconsistency took us by surprise. Where have all the cool acts gone? Perhaps the Fox has changed booking agents or something, but I distinctly remember seeing a lot more punk and metal last year and a good portion less hip-hop and rap. Don't get me wrong, I just saw Aesop Rock there and it was a brilliant show--I just don't want to have go all the way down into Denver to fulfill my mosh-pit quota. That said, every bit of this place, from the squeaky bar-stools on the upstairs balcony to the edge of the (wooden, worn to the perfect patina by many mistakenly spilled beers and drumming hands/feet) stage is amazing. The Fox is one of my favourite venues, and although it doesn't feel quite as homey and intimate as, say, the Marquis, it's still a spectacular place to catch a live show without being too crowded. read more

The Fox Theatre is what you'd expect out of a 500 cap venue. It's very intimate which is great if you're looking to get up close and personal with your favorite artist. The set up is very interesting, unlike any other venue in Colorado. Though it's small, there is plenty of space for shorter people, like me, to be able to get an ideal spot to see. I'd liken this venue to the Gothic Theater in Englewood and maybe the Bluebird Theater for reference. Would love to visit again! read more

I LOVE the Fox. I've come here to see many concerts, and every time I leave thinking what a great venue it is. You can get right up to the bands, and there are little balcony like things on either side of the stage. I've never drank here so I can't comment on the bar, but the music is always great, they have a TON of awesome bands come through, and they have pictures all over the walls in the lobby of some of the people who have come through, which are a lot of fun to look at. I make a point of touching the hand of every person I come to see, and so far I've got a 100% track record, Its great to have such an intimate experience with the bands! read more

Ah, the Fox. I go to a LOT of concerts, and I've seen quite a few at the Fox. The sound is pretty good. The PA can handle lighter rock like a champ, which is great because the Fox caters to the Boulder jam band crowd. However, anything heavier than that and it starts getting not so good. I'm not even talking metal here. During hip-hop shows the speakers start to fart out a bit. There is one major problem with this venue. They have zero respect for anyone under 21. What they do is they will declare different areas as 21+. This usually means that if you under 21, you can't go in the pit. You also can't even stand in the middle of the room, near the back, or in the balcony. You get to be behind the railing on the right. Adding insult to injury, you also have to pay more for your ticket. I like my concerts up close and personal, not like this. They should just make the whole venue 21+... AVOID ANY TECHNO SHOWS HERE. This isn't even the venues fault, but there's a large group of extremely obnoxious CU students that like to come here to roll and trip which makes for the worst concert experience ever. Go to a nightclub or a rave to do drugs kids, I'm here for the music. I really wish there were more/better venues in Boulder, but as it is the Fox has a monopoly on concerts here so they can get away with sucking. The staff is generally cool, the actual building is nice enough, but the way it is run really bugs me. And that's my rant! read more

Just a warning: the bouncers are strict about EVERYTHING as previously mentioned...I went to a show that was 21+. I had lost my license a week prior so I had a temporary license and then I brought a school ID that had a picture on it...I almost was not allowed in. I am 30! read more

The place doesn't get too crowded, they have enough varied space so you can find a comfortable location. They are able to book some pretty good bands for such a small venue. I attended the Todd Snider concert last night and was blown away not only by the show itself (AhhhMazing!), but what also blew me away was the condition and cleanliness of the Fox Theater. To date, it was the best concert experience I have ever had, and I have been to a ton of concerts in a ton of different venues over the years! It was very apparent that the employees take great pride in the Fox and work hard to make it a positive experience. In addition, it was the most respectful and "tuned-in" crowd I have ever had the privilege of enjoying a show with. You could have heard a pin drop it was so quiet, and no one was immersed in their annoying devices. It was truly Epic, and a night I will treasure for a very long time! I go to school in boulder and have, up until last night, really loved the fox. Its a small venue that gets really awesome shows for relatively cheap. However, a group of 3 of us went up there last night to see an all ages show that our friends were playing in two of us were 21+ the third was not. I got in without a problem but my other 21+ friend almost had to call the cops to keep from getting her legitimate ID taken. I know boulder is hard on ID's but this was ridiculous. We also heard at least 3 people outside of the theater that had received similar treatment and had actually had their ACTUAL ID's taken. My other friend was our DD and so was dead sober, got flat out rejected. The girl at the front told her she looked too drunk and that she wouldn't allow her access to the show. We tried very calmly to explain to her that she was under 21, she wasnt trying to get in as a 21 year old and was our designated driver. the girls response was "Its because shes the only one out of the three of you that's sober that makes me convinced that shes been drinking. and because shes drunk, we believe she will drink in the concert and we just cant have that'. sooo, our DD is 'obviously' wasted, isn't trying to let in as a 21 year old and will thus drink at the show? sounds legit. it was insane and even though i love the atmosphere of this venue and used to love going to shows here. Last night my fiancé and I had a horrible time at The Fox trying to see the Eric Krasno Band...tickets in hand, my fiancé's REAL Georgia drivers license stating he is 22 was not only denied at the door, but confiscated. The Fox Staff then required us to call the Boulder Police, and sit on the street for over an hour waiting for the officer to come retrieve the ID, after which point we were STILL denied entry to the show, despite us both being of age and dead sober, while other people being allowed into the venue were very clearly inebriated. Additionally, waiting for the police to retrieve the stolen ID, we were stranded without a way to legally drive home without my fiancé's drivers license. We have a two year old son from which we were trying to enjoy our first night off in months, and driving to Boulder from Denver and back just to be treated like criminals really, really got us down. read more

I just think it's obnoxious to have a 'svc charge' plus a 'processing fee' - I'm perfectly fine paying $33 for a concert ticket - you don't have to advertise it as $25 and then bump up the price almost $10. Its kinda sad. this is my local venue, I'll only ever go back if its one of my favorite acts (top 10), and they don't have any other shows in the area. The acoustics are ok, but thats the only good thing I have to say about this place. Every thing else sucks. Its wicked dirty. If the show is sold out, they over fill it to the point of it not being fun. And biggest reason why I only go once every year or two is THE STAFF. Rudest, Rent a Cop type security, ever. Its funny, im only 31 but I swear Im getting to old for this. I dont care what type of business is. If Im a paying customer I feel I deserve to be treated w/ respect, not like some 15 year old punk kid. With so many great Venues in Denver (shout out Cervantes) I don't no how they stay in business.
