My friend picked this restaurant, which is usually the safest bet because he treats choosing restaurants like a competitive sport. He lives out of state, so whenever he visits New York City, he does a whole research mission and sends me a shortlist. When he sent me the name of this place, I looked it up and thought, this is going to be an adventure. Even if it ended up being bad, I was ready to roll with it. I got there first and waited for him outside. You can actually walk right past the restaurant if you are not paying attention. It is not hidden, but it has that blink-and-you-miss-it kind of entrance. The space inside is long and narrow, stylish without trying too hard. We had reservations, and once we walked in, we were greeted right away. Before going, I checked the menu online and realized I would need Google Translate or at least a small culinary dictionary. I understood maybe thirty percent of the menu. But that is part of the fun, so I made a little plan for what I might order. We usually get a bottle of wine, and since my friend leans toward fish, we try to balance things out. I mentioned the Wagyu Beef Carpaccio or the Double Cut Lamb. Those names alone made my tongue tired, but when the staff brought out the raw cuts to show us before cooking, they looked incredible. You could tell the quality right away. Before the main dishes came, we tried a bunch of smaller plates. The bread and butter alone were dangerous. It is not just bread and butter here. It is bread and butter with a personality. The butter was soft and rich, and the sesame focaccia was so good it almost made us forget we had real entrees on the way. There was also this dish that felt hot and cold at the same time. I still do not know how they did that, but it worked. All those little bites actually fill you up more than you expect, and then the entree arrives like it is here to challenge you. Everything tasted amazing. Our server, a woman with a warm personality, made the experience even better. She was friendly in a genuine way. She checked in on us, joked with us, and brought the kind of energy you hope for when you go out. Not the attitude-filled trendy energy, but the welcoming kind. The whole staff seemed on point. Would I go back? Absolutely. In fact, I already have my target for the next visit. I want the 60-day dry-aged Double R Ranch rib steak. It is meant for two people, but I do not care. I am ordering it for myself. My metabolism said it is fine. I will pair it with a bottle of wine and worry about the consequences later. Who is coming with me next time? Unfortunately, the food was a miss for me. We did enjoy the Beef Carpaccio and the Focaccia. The pasta dishes left much to be desired. We ordered the Veal Tortellini, Pomodoro, and pasta with clams. The Veal Tortellini was a pretty small portion. The pomodoro had a strange tangy flavor. Our dishes must have been left sitting for a while, perhaps to bring everything out at once. Despite being a sleepy Sunday evening, Foul Witch was hopping. I grabbed the last bar seat for an excellent and interesting dinner. The Celery Alla Romano featured slivers of celery (a little difficult to eat) mixed with a generous pile of anchovies and a beautifully pungent Pecorino. It was a great salad and a good beginning. The kitchen features a wood oven, so the Roast Shoulder of Goat sounded like a great match. The roasting brought out a nice flavor that complimented the unique taste of goat meat. My favorite dessert in a long time is their Black Pepper Gelato. The very definitive peppery flavor was complimented with saltiness, sweet, creamy and sugary elements. It hit every not right. I'd have another right now, if I could. While eating, my neighbors shared their impressions of their meals and we all agreed, this was quite the place. She scoffed and said "well it's not, but I guess I can ask the kitchen." The chitarra with Dungeness crab and veal tortellini are insane. The broth for the tortellini is addicting. For dessert, we had the peach and tomato sorbets. So refreshing for the end of the summer. I wish I could try all of their pastas and desserts! Excited to come back. We walked in at 6pm on a Sunday night for 2 and sat at a high counter by the bar without any wait. My partner and I have been wanting to try Foul Witch for quite some time, and have heard nothing but rave reviews from some friends who have been a couple of times, so when we walked by and were lucky enough to snag 2 walk-in seats at the bar (~6pm on a Sunday), we were ecstatic. Oh, and if you couldn't tell by the 5 star review, we enjoyed our meal quite a bit. While it was pricey for a casual dinner, it is an excellent date spot (ambiance and all). Also - sitting at the comfortable bar leaves you right next to the open kitchen, so you get to see all of the magic in action. While we came for the wine (such an extensive and unique list), we stayed for the food. What an incredible gastronomic menu, all items which pair well with wine (I mean most food does anyway). The bartender, Alexis, was incredibly friendly and either verified or suggested items when we were choosing what to do for dinner. She was also ON IT with water refills and playing / setup, and was easy to approach when we needed something ( which could be a rarity at many spots of this calibre in Manhattan). Food-wise we ended up ordering a few dishes, the anchovies, the veal tortellini, the Oxtail Fazzoletti, the goat shoulder, and the sake lees cake for dessert (a lot of food, but we ended up finishing everything, it was that good). It was difficult to pick a favorite, but the goat was an incredible protein choice (honestly wouldn't have guessed it was goat) - flavorful and super easy to cut (not too gamey or fatty) and paired well with the charred scallions and turnips. Also - do not pass up on their bread and butter (they gave us a slice of each focaccia and baguette) - paired well with every dish and also great "in between course" palate cleaner. For pastas, we ordered the spaccatelli with aged game bird and the chitarra with dungeness crab. I personally preferred the crab, it had a lot more depth and flavor in comparison to the game bird which felt a bit lacking. However, we were way too full after the appetizers and bread to really be able to enjoy the entrees here. The bread (mostly the butter) was fantastic, the high point of the meal. The beans were great. I quite enjoyed the orange wine as well. As for everything else, it was just fine. The veal tortellini was good but not super memorable. The bucatini with crab was the same, though I slightly preferred it to the veal. The cake for dessert was strange, the honeycomb was really the only thing giving it any sweetness. I didn't love it but appreciated that it was unique. As for service, our waitress was nice. I was super excited for this location since I'm a fan of Roberta's in Bushwick. Was lucky enough to dine with friends this past Sunday. I'm not sure what was in this space before Foul Witch, but it looks like they might kept the prior restaurants aesthetic. Overall, not the look I had expected but it was cozy and comfortable. We tried a ton of things from the menu, but memorable dishes were the fire and ice (a must order), abundance potatoes, veal tortellini in brodo, sunchoke caramelle, and the dry aged duck crown. I'm sure because this place kind-of beats to it's own drum, that's the main reason for such mixed reviews. I personally was a fan and enjoyed my experience. As always I jotted down some notes during my time, please enjoy- Fire & Ice: an interesting tasting experience on the plate, the nduja sausage mixed with the creamy stracciatella cheese is both unique but also comforting. It's a combo I've never had before but one I enjoy. Two different textures and flavors that seemingly wouldn't blend well that kind of do. While this was a cool way to start off the meal, it wasn't my favorite bite and it you need to edit something off the list to try; start here. Oh! This is also an off-menu item and might not always be available. Table bread & butter: Call be crazy but this is some of the richest, creamiest butter I've had. Even the bread itself has an unqcious creamy quality to it. Specifically the (focaccia?) bread. Purple potato's and Roe: - boy is this expensive but good. The butter berblanc sauce is heavy enough to be paired with the potatoes but still light enough to not overwhelm the rest of the meal. The pops of raffle fish roe and bursts of saltiness with every bite. Incredible and delicious. Veal Tortellini: - not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't this. The pasta pockets sit in a beautiful savory with a hot of sweet broth. The crevices in the noddles catch some of this while the tortellini itself is filled with a delicate light cream. Bay leaf ice cream: - tart and tangy, velvety smooth. The savory notes from the fresh zing of the huckleberry paired with the crisp savory garnish, this is the perfect type of desert This entire meal would have been better to split for 2. These are small, tapas style dishes. Service was lovely I sat at the bar and the bartender offered great suggestions to help me create a nice meal! Vibe: - from the food to the atmosphere- funky and quirky - Club like music that makes you question if you're at a warehouse party in Berlin. I get the 'spooky' theme/ vibes but this is a scene that's hard to describe, cave like, this place feels underground I had a fun time, but I don't know if I'm running back in the next week. I don't like writing bad reviews, but this was a pretty rough experience (Feb 10th 2025). There were three major issues that went from disappointing to infuriating. First, the food was barely okay; the grilled wing of skate was a bizarrely flavorless pile of cartilage with maybe two bites of edible food (the potato side dish was good, though). The mackerel seemed turned, and the veal tortellini, while good, was more of an appetizer than an entree. Second, we were overcharged by almost $80 - a full bottle of wine was added to our bill, when in fact there was only a glass ordered. We were charged that, and it wasn't reversed, despite assurances that it was. Third, and most serious, was that the server ignored the fact that one of our party is sober. She explicitly ordered the "Fire Walk With Me" mocktail, clearly on the non-alcoholic menu, after asking for assurances that it was in fact non-alcoholic - but was then brought the "Laura Palmer" vodka cocktail. We only learned that it was the alcoholic drink after she started exhibiting signs of intoxication. The server verified that it was, in fact, the alcoholic "Laura Palmer," which was further reflected in our bill. Both drinks are made the same way, and the intensity of the fennel and chili masked the taste of the alcohol. She's been sober for over a year, and this accidental break in her sobriety was extremely distressing. It might be a good idea to not name your stupid overpriced twee drinks something that could be so easily mistaken, especially when the consequences are so incredibly dire for the person ordering. I don't know how to get the charges to my card reversed yet, but I will never go back to Foul Witch. read more

One of my favorite new restaurants of the year. We absolutely loved almost every dish. The anchovies were some of the best I've had in NYC. The bread and butter were salty and perfect. We really loved the celery, beans, and mackerel, and all four pastas (chitarra with crab, veal tortellini, game bird spaccatelli, linguine with uni) were amazing, especially the tortellini, which came in an incredible broth -- if you had told me this was at a Massimo Bottura restaurant, I would've believed you. The grilled pork and roasted goat shoulder were also both outstanding. The veal ravioli was to die for. It's been months (we went in the summer) and I'm still thinking about it. It's our Roman Empire. The bread & butter was amazingly fresh and my friend literally said she wanted to rub the butter on her body she loved it so much (if it's not special butter this would be hilarious). The carpaccio was so flavorful and complex. I cannot stress enough how great this meal was. Service was amazing. I am a water whore so even if I felt bad (and asked for a carafe) the waitress was ON TOP of things and I never had to ask for a refill she just refilled it like a magical little water fairy. Because of the food and the service I'm giving this five stars even if I did have a few nitpicky comments: Decor could be WITCHIER. Hang some herbs! Just kidding, but it would be cute. My only REAL complaint is that I hate the chairs on the high tops but I am a long life hater of bar stool type chairs- especially hard wood- for a dining experience. I'm short I won't subtract any points because the food was THAT good but I wish I could sit happily. The experience was pretty foul. I'm a big fan of Roberta's in Bushwick, so I went into this having the highest of hopes. Needless to say, I was severely disappointed. I'd like to go on record stating if I could give half stars, we'd have a 2.5 situation. But, rounding down on this one. Service: 2/5 Maybe they aren't in the groove of things. It is fairly new, so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. There were a few times when we needed someone to come to our table, and they completely disregarded us. When we asked for explanations of the dishes, we pretty much got a regurgitation of what's written on the menu. They also put off the vibe that they would much rather be anywhere else, and in the moment I could relate. Food: 3/5 Fire & Ice: 3/5 I was hoping for a creamy rich stracciatella and a FIREY base (hence the name). The base wasn't punchy and there was no fire in sight. The cheese looked creamy and beautiful but didn't have much salt to it, and the creaminess didn't live up to the appearance. The beans: 5/5 Best part of the meal. Which is kind of sad. They were buttery, rich, and the salsa verde was bright with citrus and herbs, it added life to the whole meal. Bread & Butter: 4/5 How could you mess this up? I mean you could. But that butter, damn. I would eat that with a spoon. The amount they give you really made up for the small portions in other departments (not really tho). They brought us more bread but took away the butter and took us about 20 minutes to get someone's attention to bring more, knocking a star for that reason. Caramelle: 3/5 This was my favorite of the two pastas we tried, but not one I would eat again. The filling tasted like pure sunchoke, nothing else. Which maybe that was the point. But I feel like there should be some additional flavor to compliment it. Sunchoke doesn't give main character energy to me, she needs a companion. I thought the lemon would be it, but it wasn't quite strong enough. Spaccatelli: 1/5 My own personal ick, the pasta was completely over cooked. Maybe some would disagree. But the soggy noodle, mixed with game meat, and a bland white sauce had me feeling like I was eating a tuna delight casserole at a forced social function. Kept eating it to not hurt anyone's feelings, but at one point I had to put the fork down. We didn't even finish this one, which says a lot since the portions are sized for a mouse. Lastly, the sad herb garnish didn't do much and felt like a complete afterthought. TLDR; Will not be returning, especially for how difficult it was to get a resy. Even if it was easy to get a resy, I probably wouldn't return. Looking at price compared to value, and the math ain't mathing. so sad to be giving this cute place 3 stars. first and foremost the staff and service was on point. our waiter was so attentive and honestly was such a huge help in choosing the wines. the reason I gave this 3 stars is because of 2 of the dishes. it was the polenta with uni and the grilled tripe. both dishes were EXTREMELY salted. it was SO hard to eat. but coming in at almost $30 per dish, we stomached it down. besides that the other dishes were good. we got a red wine and a white wine and both wines were pretty yummy. read more

Avoid!!!! The food is expensive. The portions of small. The flavors are off. The fish was under cooked and flavorless. The beans were tasty but such a small portion. The beer was good. The server was nice. The space was sexy. The veal tortellini was mushy. Overall for the price and the flavors... avoid! There are much better choices and this place misses the mark. The silver lining is they did comp us for the fish but as I write this I'm hungry :( read more
