This restaurant is located on the top floor of Bloomingdale's. This place was very convenient because we didn't want to walk through the mall. We were seated quickly, and decided to go with the lunch specials. I ordered the turkey club which was came with a side of fries. It was very fresh and filling, the fries were crunchy just like I like them. Hubby ordered the Ahi tuna sandwich with a side of Coleslaw topped with mandarin oranges. My review is for takeout only. This place unfortunately is a shit show. Before Covid it was great. Afterwards, the food is absolutely tasteless, often tastes burnt as if the grill hadn't been cleaned in a while, and sometimes weirdly packaged. Before Covid, whoever was cooking really knew their stuff. Now, it seems as though they dug up anyone to cook. Also, my meal, whether it's a burger or quesadilla for example, doesn't look burnt but tastes it. Also, one time they shoved a sandwich and fries in a teeny tiny container, and the next I a big container for something very small. Additionally, if you look at the wait staff they all move about at a snail's pace and look as though they absolutely hate their jobs. Two things to note. If you stand at the counter trying to place an order you'll more often than not be forced to wait way over 10 minutes. Also, and this is a BIGGIE - I ordered a small coffee, which btw, took almost 15 minutes (I timed it) even though I was told it would be right out. When it finally came out and I took a sip it was cold. When I opened it, it was then that I noticed that it was someone's old coffee that obviously had been laying around. When I went back and complained, all I got was - so do you want another one? You couldn't pay me to eat here again, and whoever manages this place should be fired. read more

This place is awesome. Super delicious food from salads to sandwiches. All seems to be on the healthy light side and I wanted all of it. I had a special Pastrami grilled cheese. It had thick cut fresh pastrami with cheddar cheese and coleslaw topped on TEXAS TOAST!! it was super professional and came with a side of fresh cut sweet potato fries and the carrot soup !! Let me tell you about the carrot soup , it is a must try. It was so creamy and full of flavor. I never had carrot soup so I figured I give it a go and I'm happy I did. It is hard to eat in a department store restaurant and not long for the good old days. If you have been to Chicago and fortunate enough to have eaten at the old Marshall Field's Walnut Room, know those days are gone. Alas, special department store dining rooms are few and far between but one could still always count on getting a reliably satisfying meal at most upscale stores. Granted, department store dining not what it used to be but it is a completely different experience. In short, memorable department store dining is a thing of the past. So much for the trip down memory lane. I had high hopes for 40 Carrots at the Short Hills Mall Bloomingdale's. I wanted a good sandwich and counted on being able to get one. The restaurant is bright and cheerful. One side is all windows and it's nice to look out at the changing tree leaves. Lovely! I was greeted and seated by a lovely woman. Don't you hate it when your server comes over, cheerfully greets you and takes your order, and you only see her again when she brings your food....and when you're finished, asks how everything was? Sigh... I would've told her what I did when I was already finished. The egg salad was good; a bit too much mayonnaise, and the ratio of egg salad to tasty brioche bun was wildly uneven. The homemade potato chips were trying to be crisp and the poor limp pickle spear couldn't decide if it was sour, half sour, sort of sweet, or something completely different. It was definitely disappointing. It would have nice to have my iced tea while waiting for my food. In fairness, the food didn't take long but it would have been a treat to enjoy a few sips of iced tea before my food arrived. When my server brought my bill, she asked if I wanted a to-go cup for my iced tea. Where was this wonderful attentive server earlier? I did and she brought me a fresh one. It would have enhanced my experience had she been this way while I was eating. The staff was pleasant and friendly but there was one spectacular stand out. His name is Hugo. Hugo never slowed down or stopped moving. He constantly had his eye on everything. Hugo cleared and immediately set up the tables and took care of anything needing attention. Wow! This fine man should be cloned! Lunch was ok but I expected much more. Actually, Hugo made my day. I hope his bosses are aware of how hard he works snd appreciates him. read more

40 Carrots is a small food shoppe at the third floor in the Bloomingdales Department store at the Short Hills mall. We were the only ones there after dinner to grab a frozen yogurt snack. $5 regular gets you a few different flavors - cookies & cream, vanilla, plain, coffee. You can mix and match a bit, and is plenty. They have a larger size if you intend to share (though really the $5 was probably enough for a date between two people!). They also have soups, fresh salads and other entrees that tout light and healthy ingredients, so no fried chicken or wings here. The single server worked quickly and efficiently, no issues and a hot water or cold water refresh here and there as we needed it. Completely overpriced for what it is. That being said, the food is not awful. My mango chicken salad was extremely filling and our server was very nice. I say this as someone very sympathetic to what servers have to put up with, but Haneefah did not listen to us, ignored us so we couldn't point out that she had forgotten some of our food, was rude in taking our order and wouldn't even acknowledge that she had heard us (she just walked off when she thought she had heard enough, so we couldn't ask for a take-away bag or our check). She was so slow, leaving the eating floor for almost ten mins at a time. They weren't very busy while we were there, but because of this service we endee up spending 20-30 mins just waiting/wanting to leave. Of these restaurants, 40 Carrots is an exceptional exception. They specialize in healthy fare with an emphasis on freshness. It is so good that I have been known to make a special trip to the Short Hills Mall & brave the tortuous parking situation just to go to Bloomingdales and eat there. I usually opt for one of their creative and fresh salads or their mayo less tuna but always start with their creamy carrot soup which is epic. Great little tucked away spot to eat in Short Hills mall, upstairs by the department stores. I'd realized there wasn't a Yelp page for this place, so I made one as we ate there for the first time! Forty Carrots puts its eggs in the healthy salads and wraps basket, and they do a pretty good job with it. I got the Chicken Mango salad, which was grilled chicken, mango slices, toasted almonds, vinaigrette, and feta cheese in a GENEROUSLY-portioned salad bowl. It was definitely pricey, but at the same time, was filling and done perfectly. They have a huge assortment of froyo for dessert, but based on the price, we decided to respectfully pass! I ordered the "adult" Mac & Cheese which was literally Kraft boxed mac&cheese, when I asked the waitress she has visibly embarrassed to admit that yes, it did come from "a box". $14 for macaroni & cheese from a 99cent box. Bloomingdales should seriously be ashamed to EVER think serving a Kraft box of mac&cheese is okay/acceptable. Side note it tasted horrible & I make better Kraft (which is sad) & something that is extremely easy to make right... Last winter, I actually encountered a woman engage in an enormous argument with the manager and staff because they served her rotten tomatoes in her salad. Keep in mind that you are paying for the atmosphere as well. This location is situated on the top floor of Bloomington's to the right exiting the escalator. There is also a 40 Carrots fro-yo stand on the basement level right behind the escalator if you are wanting just fro-yo and not a meal. An added bonus is the free Nespresso cafe next to the basement stand with awesome free espresso and lattes. This is a great "pick-me-up" spot if you are visiting Short Hills and need a recharge. I was super surprised with my experience today, I've used gift cards at Forty Carrots for years without any problem but tonight I was super surprised when I was told that they could not accept the gift card and I was embarrassed that we were scolded in front of my children and the entire restaurant. The floor was dirty and the bathrooms were deplorable with hair and paper towels laying all over the place. I couldn't even put my feet on the ground because it was that filthy with leftover food and crayons. And also the people right next to us decided to leave the restaurant because they were waiting for 45 minutes for their food and it hasn't even come yet! The turkey burger has changed dramatically and it is getting worse and worse every time we get it. This restaurant used to have a salad bar and a coloring page for kids. Now this restaurant is a hot mess and is very dirty and has bad management.
