Avocado on toast with lemon and truffle salt
    Stephanie D.

Forty Beans is a great little cafe just near the North Harbour National Park and the various tourist walks. It's in a very scenic spot and has a very community feel about it. Also lots of people bring their dogs to sit outside either before or after their trip to the park. There isn't much seating, so if you can't get a seat inside or outside, get take away and sit in the opposite park. The staff are friendly and the service is efficient. The coffee is good, not too bitter or strong, and not too milky (I order skinny latte). Breakfast is great here. There's a good menu with various options including the great avocado on toast. The truffle oil is very strong, so if you don't like truffle oil you probably won't like it! But they use plenty of avocado and the bread is thick. The muesli and yoghurt cups are also great, easy to eat and take away. I'm dying to try the coconut/mango bread toasted. It looks delicious and even comes with berries. For lunch we have tried the cajun chicken focaccia and the smoked ham and cheese focaccia. These are pretty tasty and pretty good value, either take away or to eat inside. As there is limited seating it's not the best place for large groups. But once again, if you get there early in the morning you'll have a great chance of getting a good spot. I like that this cafe is in a pretty secluded location with no other shops or buildings nearby. It's a good spot to go to to avoid the large weekend crowds of pedestrians, cars and noise.

Pretty good muesli cookies, coffee, salad and service. Could be a bit faster and better priced. A bit pricey.

Extraordinarily rude and obnoxious staff. Also Made snide comments about the customers in front of me after theyd left.

Returing home many times from overseas Fresh is always my destination to 'settle back in' However its location in the busy Manly Beach Plaza is also part reason for its popularity. Its right in front of Skater HQ (formerly Manly Rollerblades) and Australian HQ. And Im intrigued to see that Murrays is a bar opening over it (short time for that spanish restaurant to have been there) very soon I have never seen a location that can turnover as businesses as this one has. This morning Im sharing Pear and Rasberry toasted bread with my 1 year old who is having a babychino and I a Belaroma skim Mocha. The P&R bread is to die for and while my daugther throws around her froth she enjoys playing with all the toys they have avaliable. Even with Hemingways next door (another venue that has changed many times) I think Fresh is going to survive for many years to come.

I found just that in 'Fresh at Manly' which offered some seriously tasty bagel, burrito and wrap fillings. The shop itself is tucked away under the Beach Plaza but it's got the advantage of having loads of chairs and tables out front from where you can people watch til your hearts content (aka hot surfers central). Although service is a bit slow there is a selection of toys and crayons laid out, since there's nothing saying they're specifically for children you could always amuse yourself with those...

Each menu item is labelled with dietary requirements making it super easy to make your choices without guessing. The servings are substantial and delicious, the vegetables are crisp, fresh and cooked with love. Everything about this place is earthy and organic which means it comes with the usual 'hipster tax'. There's a small market style store at the back if you get swept away and feel inspired to start making your own hipster food - make sure you have a spare child to sell or you are prepared to remortgage your house if you want to purchase anything. On the downside, the staff meet the minimum requirement. Getting menus, water and ordering is self-serve but the staff will dump/throw your order in front of you at your table. Each time we've eaten here and our order is thrown in front of us, parts of it will fall on to the table - this is now a running joke. Today when we ate here, I thought I was going to be bitten by the cook when our order came through to the kitchen dead on kitchen closing time. If these guys could get their act together on the service front, they'd no doubt be our favourite lunch spot and earn 5 star reviews.

Walter and his wife Dini are an affectionate favourite among the locals and on occasions can be perceived as moody however I witness them both address each patron by first name and feel a little envious but for only a moment as Walter brings my perfectly made fair trade skim mocha my breakfast special of Eggs Florentine with Soy Pesto cream sauce and steamed English spinach. The kitchen is open from 7:30am- 3:30pm and the shop is open until 5:30pm. You can call ahead to have food prepared to pick up. Portions can vary in size however the food itself is unparalleled in quality and because of this - prices are premium also. Today talk in this vegetarian cafe is thick of the pending rugby league grand final and what the weather for the local Manly Jazz carnival will do. The founder of the jazz carnival was my music teacher in primary school Mr John Speight and along with the locals I will hope that its good weather for one of the only music festivals of its kind in Australia.
