Kids do not belong in there using the equipment and rarely are the parents around. Make a gym for kids if you want them in there, otherwise have them go to the Kid's Zone.

You are able to access the gym any time of the day even on a guest pass - just message/call the owner ahead of time to get access information. The gym itself has only a few cardio machines: treadmill, elliptical, erg, ski erg, stair master. What is truly the star of this gym are the machines. No two machines are exactly the same and each serve a specific purpose. I did a full leg day here and had 3 different leg presses and a hack/reverse hack squat machine to choose from. The cable equipment had every type of handle/grip that you could want nicely hung up on the wall. There are a good number of dumbbells and barbells to use as well. There's a very small turf area with a sled, boxes, bands, and kettle bells. If you only want to do cardio, this may not be the best fit, but if you do any type of weightlifting (powerlifting, bodybuilding, crossfit) this is the place for you! In October of 2024, after swimming laps for 20 minutes, our Chevy Tahoe was stolen from the parking lot of the YMCA. Wallet, phone, (all credit cards etc......) The police were called and they came and worked with the people at the front desk and my husband. We are taking COMPLETE responsibility for this careless mistake ( the thieves taking of the keys from the POCKET of the pair of my husbands workout pants hanging INSIDE the locker IN the men's locker room at the YMCA). Our house keys were on the car key fob that was stolen. (We had an attempted break in at our home the same week as the stolen car). Co-incidence? That being said here is my concern. Being that this is the "Young Men's CHRISTIAN Association, - is there NO compassion, concern, empathy with anyone from the YMCA front desk or upper management that was part of this interaction with the police and my husband on how we are? My husband used the Y phone to call me as his was stolen. SOMEONE at the front desk now knows that at least his phone is gone. Is there not a report at the Y and concern within the YMCA team "meeting" about theft and what they are going to do about the members involved (to support them for a minute? I thought there would be some kind of follow up phone call to see how we were doing. Maybe that is the mom in me coming out. To be so violated at a place that you FULLY trust, because you KNOW they watch WHO comes through the front door and make certain ALL MEMBERS are scanned, then a member, it can be assumed, stole the keys -- is VERY VERY unnerving. Certainly they checked all the video to help us/police find the persons who ENTERED the Y, checked in, entered the mens locker room, left the mens locker room, got in OUR car, in the YMCA parking lot, exited the parking lot etc. (?) I called after one week to ask why there wasn't a phone call to check up on two members of several years, who had their lives turned upside down at their facility? How we were doing? Were we ok? Here is what I heard. They were very sorry they didn't call us. Ironically, I did get an email reminder that our credit card wouldn't go through for our dues. Hmmm. I called and reminded them that this was the first outreach from them since the theft. The credit card on file had been in the stolen wallet that was in the stolen vehicle. I cancelled that stolen credit card. Oh sorry! Placing reminders in the newsletters about locking car doors, lockers in the locker room are all very helpful. We bought a lock for our locker for our next fitness center. What needs to be added to that little bit in the newsletter is this: "We will always be here to support our members if you are in need of us here at the YMCA. We will check on you, our valued members, if you are robbed at our facility and have your lives totally disrupted. We care about OUR MEMBERS and want only the best for them." A large part of a fitness facility if feeling safe and secure. Even without using the woman's locker room myself, (very often) I would find myself always looking over my shoulder. Needing to always make certain my car was locked. The Tahoe WAS locked. Locker - not. Probably needing to shorten my swim to leave and check that my car was still in the parking lot. I am not certain what it would take to feel safe at this facility. For now, I am still nervous. How can a person pass through the "security at the front" and then get away with taking property from the facility.

Machines and free-weights are clean and in good repair and I haven't seen them super crowded. The locker rooms are large and well-kept. Every staff member we've interacted with has been friendly, up-beat, and helpful. The Downtown location advertises a rooftop pool. While it does exist (and is nice), it's very small - basically the width of one lap-lane. Almost like a large plunge pool. Downtown also has a parking garage with free access for members which is excellent. Some other reviewers have accused acac of being too expensive, but we were actually pretty satisfied with the price. Given the amenities and multiple locations, we feel that the membership fee is plenty reasonable. If I had to call something out for being a bit overpriced, it'd be the smoothies at the gym cafes - they're good, but after Virginia sales tax and C-ville meal tax, you're looking at 10-11 bucks a pop. At that price point, I'll be bringing my own shakes for post-workout!

The women's locker room is disgusting, it smells and there is hair all over the floor and on the shower walls and floor. The hot tub is dirty too. The locker room is way over due for an overhaul. The lockers are dirty and don't get cleaned out ever. It doesn't make sense to have kids in the women's locker room either. Have a family area for changing clothes. Also, the pool is always overrun by kids and it's loud. Terrible gym don't waste your time or money.

We knocked and gained entry with the proper password: "we're here to train!" The owner was in Afghanistan but a few of his athletes were within. We expressed our desire to learn the ways of the Strongman and left tribute in the form of cash ($20) on Tank's desk. We were shown proper form on log press, atlas stones, circus dumbbells and more. You can rent shoes for $2 cash, or a little more if you pay with card. Bikes are assigned in advance, but you can change it at front desk. Now onto the class! Studio is dim lit - which is great because you don't really have to worry about anyone but yourself. Music is loud and bumpin'. The instructors are all super friendly as well and give great cues. Rides are rhythm based - so you want to try and stay on beat to maximize the workout! The best is during pushes - the mirrored wall lights up club style! Workout is well balanced with flat roads and hills, there's always a solo song and an arms workout song! I always end up sweat- I mean sparkling after class :) My favorite part of the entire Zoom experience however, is once class is over, there is an absolutely splendid tiny cold wet towel. Let me tell you, after a hard an sweaty workout, this small treat is absolutely godsend. To top it all off, there is a minty touch to the towel - no doubt a product of essential oils. I spoke with Bill, the owner, and he was very accommodating and helpful and said to come on over. Briana (sp?) at the front desk gave me a tour and showed me all of the amenities they have in their gym. It's not a huge space but it is very well organized and sparkling clean. My gym back home should see how this place is maintained. All of the equipment is in great shape, they have; free weights, several squat racks, dumbbells, a selection of machines, TRX setup (see picture) and some kettlebells for you hardcore masochists. They provide one-on-one personal training and from the interactions I saw with clients they have loyal followers. I would not hesitate to recommend this gym. They deserve 5 stars.

In all seriousness, the team there, especially Jana, helped me get back into the training routine guiding me along and making certain that I not do anything stupid to hurt myself. That was last August. Its now January and I have lost ten pounds, my back is strong, and my knees are getting stronger. This just proves that, with the right trainer, anyone can get fit. If I take a break and not show up for a week or two, they don't hassle me. I have definitely improved since I've been coming to this gym. Each time I'm able to run a little faster or lift a heavier weight. I love that I'm free to go at my own pace and do what works best for me and my body.
