We came fairly late in the morning around 11 am and yes it was difficult to find a parking spot. We got really, really lucky. We saw a ton of cars driving around the small lot and on the street leading up to the refuge trying to find a spot. If it's peak season, come early! I had no idea what we were in for as far as the view! We usually go to Chatham light every time we come to the Cape, but this is my new favorite! Low tide is a must; I'm not sure it would be anything like it was if it was high tide. The water was just magical, a beautiful shade of teal. I could have sat there and walked along the water for hours. Since the parking is limited the beach portion of the refuge is not crowded at all. Also, when we walked right, there were little starfish everywhere! So beautiful. We are in the Cape for a long weekend from R.I but would totally come back here just for a day trip! Plenty around for lunch or breakfast. Would make for a fun summer day.

I'd highly recommend coming here for that activity. This is also probably a good spot to take young kids since the water here is fairly mellow. This spot has real bathrooms which is a major plus, so many of the town's beaches have port-a-potties. Signs posted advise no dogs allowed on beach from 5/1-9/15, be careful with that, the town has some tyrants on duty that you may encounter if you break that rule. Just be careful on the beaches here with dogs in general, the town doesn't enforce laws the same way the National Seashore does on other parts of the Cape. A family member was hassled on another beach about her small pet. I also noticed that all watercraft on the beach must have a permit from the town's park department. If you stand on the beach and look to your right you will see a big house on the hill. It's rumored that it belongs to a former American Idol judge.

However, you could still enjoy this place after hours or in the off season. The parking lot is on the small side, so I recommend getting here early in the day during July and August when the Cape is packed with people. Dogs aren't allowed on the beach or in the pond from 5/1 to 9/15 at all. They do have a lifeguard station. This pond would be a good place to take kids that are learning to swim since the waters are very gentle. I've enjoyed kayaking here over the years since the water is calm. I would highly recommend this spot to a novice kayaker.
