The ride out was fine and I took some ginger pills beforehand. I stayed on the outer deck, but it was COLD! Definitely worth wearing extra layers and maybe even a winter jacket when venturing out, even in dead of summer. The ride back, I had to choose between cold and nausea, and I chose to sit in the enclosed area in the middle which made me feel so sick but being cold again for the hour or so ride home was not my cup of tea. The in-between: We saw so many whale families. Many of them breached. A few were saying "hi" smacking the water with their fins. Another totally jumped and spun in the air before crashing back into the water with a huge wave. On the way back to port we found one feeding using the bubbles method! I was in the middle area and too sick to get up but I saw someone recording the whole thing and got to see it from their phone! Overall it was awesome. The one thing that's a little bit disappointing is that they tend to go out twice a day. I learned later that that's because they're on a strict schedule with regards to high and low tides at their docking stations. We lingered out a little bit extra for that final breached whale, and rushed back to port to avoid getting stuck at sea. The price is a little steep but it covers the cost of staff, fuel, and other boat needed things. At the end of the tour the guide (describes what you're going to see and what's going on around the vessel in the water) asks for tips and you can drop a few bucks into a bucket as you disembark the ship. Happy whale watching!

The vessel can really move fast on the way to the Stellwagen Bank marine sanctuary & the whales. The boat uses water jet propulsion "like a giant jet ski" to avoid harming marine life. The captain skilfully steered the vessel with great consideration for the whales. I thought we'd see one or two whales. But we saw many more. The captain announced where the passengers could see the whales as they surfaced. To give passengers a chance to see the whales, the captain gently turned the boat. Ben, an onboard naturalist, came by and offered information about the whales. He had a set of photos of whale flukes and explained how they identify individual whales. Markings are like fingerprints. Fascinating. Highly recommended this whale watching cruise.

Five days beforehand he warned us that the weather was looking questionable for our scheduled trip on a Sunday. Then when it was certain our trip could not happen as planned, he moved things around to fit us in on Saturday. The last shark we saw was hunting in shallow water, circling and putting on a great show. Our time should have been up but Captain Darren kept us moving alongside it for an extra half hour (without being asked!) despite being the end of what had to be a very long, breakless day for him. Then he sent us photos from our trip just a few hours later! Captain Darren is truly committed to giving his guests the best experience possible and he succeeds at it. She was incredibly knowledgeable, full of energy, and genuinely passionate about whales and nature. You could tell this is more than just a job for her. She even had a whale tattoo on her leg, which made her love for these incredible animals even more authentic. We learned so much from her, and it was refreshing to have a guide so excited to share her knowledge. She kept pointing out the whales as they surfaced, and her timing was perfect, just when you thought the action had moved on, she would spot another humpback breaching or lifting its tail before diving back down. If you can, try to get on one of Sophie's tours. I've been on whale watching tours before, but I have never seen anything like this. Our four kids were beyond excited as we saw what felt like 40 to 60 humpback whales. The boat ride itself was fantastic, with the salty spray in the air and everyone crowding the rails every time a whale came up close. It was one of the most incredible wildlife experiences we have ever had. At first, I thought the tour was a little pricey, but as my son said, "Dad, this was worth every dollar. You should have paid more." He was right. We happily tipped Sophie and the crew on our way out because they absolutely earned it. If you are visiting Provincetown, do not miss this experience. It was one of the highlights of our trip, and I would recommend it to anyone.

(The bite happened at the pool before, so no worries there.) All in all, a great trip including a spin out to the spit, some walking on the beach there, and a cruise around the harbor. It was less structured than I'd have expected (felt more free-form than pre-packaged excursion) and while that wasn't a problem for me, it might be for you -- hedge that by knowing what you want to see just in case it starts out with: so, what do you want to do? Their primary boat, The Shearwater, was broken down the day of our Cocktail Cruise which kind of messed up our first day on the Island. While Rachael was super nice and prompt in explaining the situation and offering us options (e.g., reschedule), in the end, we were unable to do that cruise.
