In a world and an era where complaining and leaving bad reviews has become far more prevalent than taking a bit of time to leave stellar reviews for good honest hard working people, right off the bat, a 5 star review for Fore! Seasons Golf should clue you into the quality of service you will receive from Michael. I e-mailed him to setup an appointment with him and he promptly got back to me to schedule in a time that was good for the both of us the same week. My trip to North Berkeley ended up being far more than just a session of getting my irons bent for loft and lie. It was truly an amazing "golf" experience. His awesome club making shop for those who "know", make you feel right at home knowing your clubs are gonna be taken care of unlike some bigger chain stores. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR... don't be turned off by the small workspace Michael uses. There a number of truly gifted club makers and fitters that work from similar works shops. Not only is his work space welcoming in the sense that I knew my clubs would be taken care of, it was a really awesome experience to see such amazing golf memorabilia on display. It was really more like a golf musuem with golf history being portrayed through Michael's personal experiences with some of the greatest players that ever played the great game of golf. On to the service portion. Adjusting loft and lie may not necessarily be the hardest thing to do, but the amount of attention and effort that Michael puts into each and every club is something I greatly appreciated. He gets an idea of how much the lie needs to be changed by hitting with a 6/7 irons first. Most retailers will stop here and just bend all your clubs according to one swing, with one iron. Michael went through the entire bag, having me swing each an every club on the lie board. In addition to that, he went above and beyond by calling Adams Golf prior to our appointment to make sure how far he could bend the clubs safely, and to verify what the lofts should be on each iron. Needless to say, he did an amazing job. I just moved to the Bay Area from Los Angeles and am happy to say that I have found my go-to club fitter. I couldn't be happier with the service I received and would highly reccomend him to anybody in the market for new clubs and/or adjustments. I was looking for a local golf club repair shop in the East Bay area and noticed Fore! Seasons Golf. I was a bit skeptical as the business appeared to be nothing more than a guy working out of his unattached garage. Looks are deceiving. Although his "work space" may look cramped and a bit cluttered, it is only because he does so much quality work that people are continually filling his shop with their custom club needs. That "guy" is Michael Clark and not only is he is a true professional, but he's a really nice guy to boot! I brought in a hybrid 2 iron to get reshafted assuming he would need it for about a week before I could get it back. Not only did he quote me a more than reasonable price, he also had the club available for me in 2 days. Talk about service. In addition, he was able to match up the new shaft identically to my hybrid 3 iron in terms of flex and frequency -- the best way to replicate the desired finish. I knew my shafts could be cut down and after reading the reviews about Fore Seasons Golf in Berkeley, I figured I had nothing to lose. My shafts were cut down 3/4" and the grips were a size smaller with one wrap of tape. These were done with great precision and craftsmanship. Mike added little touches that goes over and beyond. He is fair and reasonable and spends enough time with you and his recommendations are right on. Yes it will take a little time to get adjusted to the changes but I am quite excited with the good changes that I already see which will definitely lower my handicap and I can't wait to get back on the course. I recently had my new Ping driver shorten and Michael was there once again to help me out. I've been to Fore! Seasons Golf (Michael) for a few years now...each time I go, we just have the best conversation about life and golf. I read the reviews and wondered if it was all true--it is! I'm a 9.6 handicapper with most of my clubs already custom fitted. Today I got fitted specifically for my belly putter which was a couple inches too short. Originally, he told me that he could put the extension on, let the epoxy dry and to come back in two days, but I told him that I'm serious about golf and am going to play in the Oakland City Championship and need the putter tomorrow to practice with. He then said that he could meet up tomorrow which was fine. As I was walking to my car, he was most accommodating and told me that if I had the time, I could do it tonight (after business hours). WOW!!! Michael took the time to measure out the perfect length (through trial and error of cutting in minimal incremental amounts) for the belly putter to the exact 5/8ths of an inch. In fact, during the process, when we thought the length was perfect, he put the grip on, and was unhappy with 'the play' of the grip. So he took it off, retaped the shaft again with more tape to reduce play, and then put the grip on again. I put the putter at address, and told him it needed to be cut just a hair more (like 1/4"), he removed the grip (which was almost stuck on), cut it, retaped it again, and then reapplied it. Talk about attentive to detail!!! He's the type of person who measures twice and cuts once--a perfectionist who enjoys the craft of making works of art. I've never had so much attention to detail on one club in my bag. I feel like I've reached the promise land! I told him you can't rush success while he was doing it. The whole process took 3 hours and now my putter is spec'ed out to perfection!!! It feels so good when I swing the club that I told him I feel excited to play golf again (actually, I told him I felt like I had just lost my virginity. Haha) because I know I'm going to shoot low again with this new putter. I used to be a 2 handicap in my heyday, and my handicap is high because I lose most of my strokes 3 putting--not anymore! I see the new Michael Clark spec'ed out belly putter being a major game changer!!! Scratch golf, here I come thanks to Michael!!! PS-He's so attentive to detail, he noticed that my 5 iron's fairing was coming off the hosel and fixed it as well. Wow! My experience with Michael was nearly identical to that described by Jane L. below. I emailed him about putter adjustments, received a very quick response, and he got me in that day (a Saturday, by the way). He gave me a very conservative estimate in the email, when I asked, and then ended up charging me well below that. He saved my grip at no extra charge, so I didn't need to buy a new one. He let me browse his wide selection of putter grips while he went about saving my current grip, but he didn't try to sell me on anything I did't need, which I really appreciated. He showed me around his modest shop and told me about all the custom clubs he offers. My putter is kind of old and the alignment aids had worn off. He spent a good ten minutes+ reapplying the markings with a paint marker for absolutely nothing. I say ten minutes+, not because it needed that much time, but because he takes a lot of pride in (what he refers to as) his craft, and he wanted to make sure it was just right. Overall this was a great experience, and I will be returning to Michael for all my future club adjustments, repairs, and maybe even some custom clubs if I can afford them in the future! read more

My daughter, Kelsey, is a high school golfer. Her swing coach recognized she was not hitting the balls squarely despite an improving swing. Because of the length of her arms and legs relative to her body, the clubs' lie angle needed to be flattened quite a bit. At his advice, we visited Michael who observed her swing and recommended forged clubs because they could be bent the needed amount. I purchased men's MX200's and Mizuno wedges from E-bay. Michael patiently watched her swing the clubs, took measurements and decided that cutting the length 1.25 inches and flattening most of them 7 degrees and some others a bit more or less achieved the perfect lie. After Michael's work, the clubs felt a little stiff since she was used to senior flex on her old clubs. Michael had analyzed her swing and is very knowledgeable about shafts and encouraged her to work with the regular flex and eventually, she should get used to the shafts. After a lesson with her swing coach, she is adapting to the shafts and with the new lie angle, hitting the balls a lot straighter and with more ease. Michael is a warm easy-going guy and charges such a reasonable price. First off, let me say that I am a new golfer. I bought a used set of clubs off of Craigslist and found Fore! Seasons Golf on a Google search because I was missing my 7 iron. I went over to Michael's (the owner) workshop and he spent several hours analyzing my swing, fitting my clubs and offering tidbits of advice to help. He convinced me to hold off purchasing any new clubs until I had fully committed to the sport. How many small business owners would do that? Michael is incredibly personable and provides a wonderful service to Bay Area golfers. He truly puts his customers' best interest above anything else. I played in a school golf tournament the next day and Michael actually followed up with me personally to check on my progress. Michael is great. He works out of his garage (fully dedicated golf repair store) so give him a call before you go and he'll be ready. Took my driver and sand wedge in to get it regripped. He gave me good options, did it right there while I waited and we had a nice chat while we waited. His store is full of autographs and collectibles (it's even on the ceiling) and it's a fun wait. He keeps it simple and takes cash or check only but it worked out great. Just walked off the course after an excellent round where my driver worked great and I didn't need my sand wedge at all (pretty much what I was hoping for). read more

Great custom clubmaker / fitter with excellent pricing!! I have been playing golf off and on for about 10 years but have never had a set of clubs fit to me. In getting more serious about the game I realized that the standard lie angle on my irons was completely wrong (something that I think most golfers don't really think about). I went and got some cheap used mizunos on ebay and brought them to Michael. After he completed the appropriate length adjustments we stepped through each iron, one at a time, and tweaked the lie angle until I was hitting perfectly square on the sole. I believe this sort of attention to something you would have a tough time finding somewhere else. After we were done I was hitting each of my irons perfectly square on the sole. The results were mind boggling! I was fit for 1.25" long and 6.5 to 7 degrees upright!!! I went to the range immediately afterward and loved the results! I was making solid contact on every single swing. While my lie adjustment was an unusual case, it does go to show that everyone has a different swing and getting your clubs fit accordingly will be a great aid in making the game that much more enjoyable. read more

It must have been heaven sent that I was able to locate Fore! Seasons Golf and Michael. I will not repeat what a lot of the other posting sources have said. However, I would strongly confirm and second what a lot of his other customers have said about the level of service and moreover, the integrity and professionalism that he imparts. Michael definitely exceeds expectations. The advice that Michael provides is just as, if not more, important, than the service that he provides.Michael really tries to get to know the golfer as a person, before determining what needs to be done......fantastic bedside manner and more importantly, the key to customer service. Michael cut a driver shaft on my favorite driver to shorten it......I was a bit apprehensive but had actually agreed with everything he said about what the club had been doing to my swing. Took it to the driving range this morning and have reverted to my older (albeit untrained) swing.....hitting the ball more solid and with a less flatter swing plane......way more enjoyable. From difficult (e.g. cutting shafts, building clubs, etc.) to more mundane (e.g. regripping), Michael applies the same level of meticulousness and professionalism to all of his services. I went to get my new irons fitted this weekend and was very pleased with the experience. Michael clearly explained what he was doing and why (this was my first custom fitting) and for $50 fit all my irons to my swing. Would definitely use again, and I will probably have him make me a wedge set next season (after I pay off the irons I just bought). Gem in Berkeley! As a mid-handicap player, I always try to find ways to get better. In fact I just bought Adams, Ping in 7 months and was about to go for Taylormade iron set until I made an appointment to see a clubmaker (Michael Clark). I got fitted and he took a good look with my current Ping set and went the whole nine yards of club fitting. He only changed my long clubs and did not touch my iron set. I was pretty happy with long clubs but he suggested some improvements. I test drived them today- and the results were 'AMAZING!' I was way more accurate with my driver, There is more control with my driver! I did NOT lose any swing speed, in fact I reached my Max SS twice. He replaced my old shaft with shafts that matches my swingspeed. This shafts are being used in long drive competition( he did not tell me but I did my research- high quality shafts). He also worked on my putter and tried them today. the' adjustments' made me more confident with my putts. My putter feels better when I line up towards my target. So happy with the results of my long clubs and I did NOT have to spend unnecessarily-- my point is--just give him a call for appointment and you'll get honest, expert, prompt, professional and friendly service. Just go there and be 'SPECIFIC' with what you want and he'll work with you. I met his wonderful family as well. FYI: Just to let you all know, I did not get paid for this endorsement. If you are serious about your game and live in San Francisco or the East Bay, here are your choices: You can go to Golf Mart or Golfsmith. Do you think they can tell you that the '97 model Maxfli MCT Aussie Blade was actually cast, not forged in nickel chrome and therefore should be checked for loft and lie because it is a pretty soft material? Uhm, no. They will tell you the compression channel on the new Nike VR Driver will improve your game because Tiger is using it even though you are a 30 handicap with an 80 mile an hour swing, and bad mechanics. and btw, Tiger actually doesn't use it.. Sadly, there is no knowledge, or very little in the retail golf industry today. It exists, but it is all in the corporate cave, not in the stores. Granted there are some nice and knowledgeable people working in golf stores, but they are pushed to sell the latest equipment whether or not it is actually any good. And the sense of history and what is important in playing well is largely lost. Enter Michael Lee Clark. Now, if you really want to take a trek you could go all the way to Oughton's in Sacramento or Keplinger's out in Walnut Creek. Those would be Michael's nearest colleauges. But why anyone would not visit Michael Lee Clark's charming little workshop in Berkeley, look at the memorabilia on the walls, visit with Chivas the Labrador, and talk about golf is beyond me. He is the closest and very convenient for Bay Area golfers. In addition he has a gazillion shafts, grips, a loft and lie machine, a swingweight machine, a launch monitor (not sure if it is currently in use), and some great stories. Michael is a certified Class A clubmaker and they are few and far between. He has been trained by nearly every manufacturer at some point. I am constantly dropping mini projects on him, like when I found a rare Tad Moore Sand Wedge with good grooves at a garage sale for $2. However, the shaft was bent. Michael had several S300 wedge pullouts to choose from. We picked one, and $25 later I have a wedge I could put on eBay for $100 as a collector's item. Most importantly Michael will get you properfly fit for your game, and does not have a one size fits all or a dogmatic know it all approach to his work. He is a lot of fun to work with.
