Green peppercorn hanger steak with cornbread

Round 2! After 2 years we gave this spot another try. Many of my first comments stand, but we approached this dining experience with a different attitude. Forage's menu is fresh, in season, locally sourced, and a little weird! But that's okay! We started with the scallops and the char spread served with a milk bun. The bun and char spread was DELICIOUS. I could eat a whole tub of it. The scallops are poached in Parmesan oil, and topped with fennel and ... black ants. Yes, actual dried, crunchy ants. It was a fun dish but it was actually the fennel that threw my palate off. For mains we were indecisive so we got 3 big plates. The cabbage Alfredo served with mushroom bacon and winter squash, the green peppercorn hanger steak served with cornbread (!) and mixed veg, and the New England seafood bake. The cabbage Alfredo was 10/10; incredible flavors and textures. The steak was of course amazing. And the seafood bake was good! We may have been hitting a food coma wall at that point, but the fish was a little underseasoned. Overall my opinion has changed. Forage is a spot you return to if you're tired of the monotony of your typical restaurant. I don't think any other spot in Greater Boston is serving scallops topped with black ants, but hey, it was fun! And once again, the staff is AMAZING. SO kind and fun and really lean into giving you the best dining experience.

Roasted mushrooms and apples. Can you believe this dish has onion ice cream? It is amazing.

Can a place have more than 5 stars just on "service" along?... THIS is the place. This place is casual but, absolutely classy. Really amazing in all they do. Check how much they have considered the details of a customer comfort, that they even have installed panels on the ceiling, to block the noise. Yes, you can listen to lovely music in the background while you are having conversations with your friends and family. Definitely a super win there, for me. And the food you ask? Well... as amazing as everything else. Delicate dishes, presented in great ways and in fact, super delicious. Wow, this place has it ALL. If you are in the area, treat yourself and enjoy! Happy meals!

Cozy spot in the basement. Made a reservation for a Friday evening and were seated right away. Love that there are tasting menus for different dietary restrictions (omnivore, pescatarian, vegetarian, or vegan) and you don't have to reserve it ahead of time. Everyone at your table must elect to participate in a tasting menu but you can mix and match (e.g one person does vegetarian and one person does vegan). There's also optional wine or non alcoholic drink pairings and not everyone at the table needs to elect to do those (e.g. one person can do a wine pairing and one person can order a cocktail). Can also add on a vegan or non vegan cheese course! We chose the vegan tasting menu, with one wine pairing and one cocktail and we had an absolutely fantastic meal. Amuse-bouche was house made pickles: fiddlehead, asparagus, and radish. Second course was little leaf salad with toasted hazelnuts, pear, caramelized pickled shallots, and charred onion & thyme vinaigrette. While every course was fantastic, this was our favorite and the best salad we've ever had! The shallots and dressing were phenomenal. Third course was miso komatsuna with kimchi cranberries and pickled ginger. Fourth course was spanakopita over a bed of toasted orzo, Za'atar spiced pita, toum, caramelized shallots, and olive and dill salad. Dessert was Japanese yam cashew cheesecake. We had mentioned in our reservation we were celebrating a birthday and they also brought out peach rhubarb sorbet with a candle which was lovely. The wines were a sparkling white, an orange wine, a Shiraz Merlot blend, and a dessert wine. The cocktail was the PawPaw Patrol which was a rum drink with pawpaw fruit. Every course and wine was explained to us as they were brought out. We had a lovely experience and loved every course; will certainly be back again, especially as they rotate menus frequently!

My husband and I went back to celebrate and anniversary and we went here at least 3 years ago during covid. This was better experience than last as they have built a patio for outdoor dining. When we first went we were on the parking lot. Anyway they greeted us with a toast of bubbly wine and it was tasty. We enjoyed 5 dishes but I forgot to take a picture of the brownie for dessert they also gave us a scoop of their home made key lime pie on the house! The service was great and very attentive. Some of the vegetables were almost underdone but it may just be their style. Always can expect creative flavors and in season items I wouldn't think to make at home. Love supporting these types of restaurants and local small business. The ambiance is cute inside but we sat outside as it was a nice but windy day.

Quirky restaurant with a quirky staff (good things!) and tasty food. I did the non-alcoholic drink pairing. Very creative and highly commended. I did the Omnivore tasting menu which consisted of three vegetarian dishes and one meat course. Vegetarian dishes are very simple, but very fresh are tasty with nice textures The meat course was also very simple but well cooked and was tasty. The dessert was awesome. A bit on the expensive side for what you get, but everything is tasty and creative so I will certainly come again soon

    Seafood extravaganza

The first thing that strikes you about Forage is its unique location - nestled up right in the middle of a suburban street block, the restaurant is in the basement of a rather nondescript building, and if not for the outdoor dining area, it might just blend in with its neighbouring residential buildings. The second thing is that it's really dark inside. Somewhat unsurprising, I guess, since it's in a basement, but our table in particular was poorly lit to an extreme. That's probably the most notable thing about Forage, though. The food, in a word, was bland. We had the One Cheese and the seafood starters, and honestly I was a little shocked at how.. boring everything was. The cheese plate came with a few tasteless crackers (the cheese itself was fine but certainly did not merit the price) and apple slices (somehow even the apple was bland - a bit dry and not at all sweet). Seafood extravaganza was similar - the place certainly looks nice but each component (especially the shellfish) just had very little flavour to it. Our mains were no less disappointing. Hanger steak was quite tasty, but that was actually it. Both fish plates felt unseasoned and unprepared, and the accompanying veggie selection was so lacking in flavour that we barely ate any of it. Was anything actively bad? Not really - but I can't really remember any particular item or flavour from the entire meal. Everything felt amateurish, from the uncreative recipes, odd and borderline pretentious plating, and most critically, the lack of flavour in... frankly everything. Overall, an extremely mediocre experience - and for this price point? I don't think I'll be coming back.

Seared fish with seasonal veggies this one came out cold :( better after it was sent back and reheated.

Came here with friends for a dinner. Food: 3.5/5 Got the hen of the woods, mushroom sausage, seared fish, steak, and "papparadelle". The food was really good however, the fish dish came out cold and needed to be reheated and the peppers with the mushroom sausage was so burnt it couldn't be eaten. Service: 2/5 This is the real kicker for me, the servers were really nice and explained the menu thoroughly. The cocktail menu was designed by one of the servers. HOWEVER, at our 8pm reservation with everyone seated on time without the restuarant being too busy, we waited an hour between our app and our main with the waitress saying "we serve you your main when you're ready for it" which confused our group given that we were ready for our entrees for an hour. Overall we didn't get to eat our dinner until 9:45. Food was good but not worth an almost 2hr wait even if we were already seated.

Last time I visited, I ordered their "Sea Dog" which they purport to be their special dish. I should have thought twice when the server told me it was "creamy," but they had a limited selection of food and I was very hungry--and, they made it seem like their signature dish! When it came, I immediately realized I had made a terrible mistake. One bite of the Sea Dog was all I could manage, as it was, in fact, very creamy, and very fishy. It was a very unpleasant eating experience, and I actually sent it back, which I almost never do. I will take some responsibility for ordering this dish, but I'm still puzzled by the whole thing. It was like creamy, fishy seafood mush enclosed in a sausage casing. The server did kindly offer to take it off our bill which I appreciated. On the bright side, the staff was very helpful and I really enjoyed the wine they recommended. I'd gladly come back for wine and the pleasant ambiance, but after the Sea Dog incident I'll probably stay away from their food for the most part.

I will say it's a bit tough being expected to tip 25% on an entire bottle of wine...although they no longer add the automatic gratuity, they have multiple signs encouraging people to tip and I did feel some type of way after we did not tip the full 25% on a bottle. The workers behind the counter aren't very welcoming or friendly and I did feel a bit judged for not tipping the full 25%. Hoping it was just in my head but it honestly didn't feel great. I hope they can work on their service because this place has amazing potential.
