I was quite impressed by the vegetarian tasting menu (adapted to be vegan, because I am one of THEM) and the wine pairing! The Vouvray and Syrah stood out among the wines, while the celeriac soup and olive oil cakes were my favorites of the six courses. Kudos for providing a stellar experience to a vegan. My husband and I went out for our anniversary here and it was lovely. It happened to be a "meatless monday" so the normal vegetarian tasting price fix was extended to six courses. We also got the wine pairing and it was a lot, definitely got our money's worth. The owner explained each dish and wine beautifully, answered all my questions. The food was good, but not unforgettable. We did the omnivore tasting menu and the servers were kind to make accommodations for me since I cannot eat raw seafood. Overall though, I am giving 3 stars because the service was incredibly slow. We had reservations for 8:30 and did not leave the restaurant until 11:30. There was about 30-45 minutes in between each course and everyone in our party did the omnivore, so I would have thought the service would have been quicker. read more

Lovely intimate space, good vibe, great service, pretty fun and affordable wine list, parking (in Cambridge!) - but in the end, very disappointing food. Basically everything was underseasoned and many dishes that looked like they should have had a lot of impact were very one-note and dull when actually eating them. I am always searching for restaurants in the Harvard Sq. vicinity to use for Harvard functions and/or for more intimate dinners. Regrettably, this cannot be one of them. An NYC author and I dined there this weekend, and we were genuinely shocked when I was treated to a sneering response to being a teetotaller (truly, a dangerous response that implied it was a problem that I was not drinking---always the sign of an amateur, backward restaurant) and we were later given a lecture on green tea by the waitress who made her impatience that we depart relentlessly clear. Finally, the manager came by and paced our table (we had ordered a full meal---h'ors d'oeuvres, entrees, tea, etc.) after our only having been there for 90 minutes and after having a decent conversation despite the intrusions and snobbery, and all but asked us to leave. My fiancé and I had high hopes for Forage. The ambience, service, and cocktails leave little to be desired. The food however, is bizarre...in an attempt to be "adventurous" they have wildly missed the mark. Spending $200 on dinner, we would at least expect that the food would be cooked correctly...the haddock was rubbery, the sunchokes undercooked, and the cornbread dryer than sandpaper. We hope this little spot can redeem itself. read more

My wife and I have been coming to Forage since it opened after Ten Tables closed. Simply put, this restaurant is phenomenal! The chef continually changes the menu with what is locally available, yet leaves some reliable favorites alone. There are often some wonderful vegetable-forward dishes, and of all the restaurants we have been to in the Cambridge/Somerville area Forage does vegetables the best. Recently we had an asparagus dish that was comprised of both roasted and raw asparagus that was simply to die for. I had never had raw asparagus! Delicious! Their wine list is consistently good, and like a growing number of places in the area leans towards natural and low-intervention wines. The cocktails are interesting and are getting better every time we go. If there are two of you, opt to reserve seats at the bar/counter. It is a really fun dining experience. One of my favorite things about Forage is that you can hear each other talk! Wonderful for low-key dates. I will admit that if your palate is still stuck in the bacon-loaded cooking of the last decade or so, you might need to adjust a little before coming to Forage. Ween off the Alden & Harlow with a little home cooking for a few weeks, and then hit this place up. read more

We showed up as a party of 5+. The temperature setting was WAY too hot inside, and this bothered us all. The food for me wasn't that good. It was a motley combination of many items. Many of the ingredients were locally sourced (i.e. beets and meats), but many were not locally sourced (i.e. cardamon, pistachio). Speaking for myself, I've been to other farm-to-table restaurants, like Henrietta's Kitchen, but this food didn't resonate with me: Not the charcuterie table, nothing. read more

Went their on a Sunday evening. We sat at the small bar. Very cozy feeling. All 3 desert options sounded phenomenal and our choice was incredible. The chef here (transferred from JP's ten tables) is just amazing. Last night's menu was great and our neighbor's dishes looked just as appealing. It's a bit of a hit or miss since their menu changes all the time as they use local ingredients and what's available. I am very picky and between the food, the cocktails and the desert -- 5 stars. Glad that i was able to get a reservation about 4-5 days before by calling. FYI you should book by calling rather than Opentable since a credit card number is required with Opentable. Got seated immediately. They have a great selection of wines, beers, cocktails. Cocktails have interesting names like "Swipe Right", which i found out was no longer on the menu. Ordered the sweet potato appetizer and then we had the pork belly and mushroom pappardelle pasta. Pork belly skin was over done and took some effort to chew. Pasta was great. read more

The food here feels very healthy. The choices really shake up what your mouth may be used to even if the components are all the same. The style of the chefs cooking must be very unique. They use an interesting mix of vegetables to pickle and jam. One of the reasons I wanted to come here was because of how I perceived the ambience, I was spot on about that, this place is very well decorated. The staff were very nice. Our meals were filling but not in a way that weighs you down. I didn't like how it seems like many of the recipes had the same ingredients ( nearly half their items in all categories including dessert had beets ) and I found it sad that they were so strict about making changes to the tasting menu to accommodate different customer needs and diets. read more

I live nearby and almost don't want to tell you how good this is, lest I not be able to get a table, preferably every Monday, for the rest of time. But the praise is deserved. Menus are small. Very focused on seasonal and local foods, and every bite has been very well executed, servers are very well-educated about the food and wines that they serve, but aren't snotty when they tell about details of the products. The whole space is so much calmer and cleaner than the restaurant it replaced. I'm a pretty strict vegan, and they can accommodate this with no drama or sacrifice. Seriously, I think Forage makes my VERY picky best-restaurants-in-Cambridge list, after having eaten there twice, eating one a la carte and once for the Meatless Monday prix-fixe. My sole and only criticism: consistently, hot items would ideally be served a lot hotter. But that's really nitpicking. Cocktails are special, wine list is special. Service is terrific and most importantly, the food does not disappoint. Fried tomato leaves topped my pasta last night - who knew? Stunningly fresh and flavorful. Go to Forage and be happy. Disappointing. I like Ten Tables and had high expectations. Service was slow - we had 3-4 people waiting on our table and our coffee/tea never arrived with dessert as requested until we requested it again. By then, we had finished dessert. The food was also disappointing. Looked good on paper but in reality the flavors didn't really come together that well. I got the red lettuce salad and steak. The salad was boring and the steak was so over-salted it was barely edible. Also, my medium steak was really a rare. I was starving and ate it, but regretted it later and really should have sent it back. read more

Recently went there for a wine dinner and had a wonderful time. Some fantastic natural wines were poured including an amazing 2001 Sangiovese. The food and wine pairings were all right on the mark. You know when you have a bite and both the food and the wine transform into a sublime taste that you're in the presence of a lot of thought, hard work, and culinary talent. We've been there other times and it's always been good. With so many restaurants to choose from it's a statement that we find ourselves going back. Forage always has something interesting on the menu as well as more reliable dishes that aren't so adventurous. They seem to walk a line between catering to the discerning farm to table eater and the rest of the family. A favorites is the hanger steak - great spice rub and the fried parsley and greens are an amazing flavor contrast. Forage has become one of our favorite restaurants. Always interesting food that is satisfying, comforting and delicious. The staff is friendly, helpful and all see to be knowledgeable about the food and the drinks. We loved our experience at Forage! I messed up using OpenTable to reserve and got the date wrong, so we showed up on a Saturday night with 5 people and didn't actually have a reservation. It was really busy the whole time we were there, but they somehow made magic happen and fit us in anyway. The food was amazing and dietary-restriction friendly (I have a gluten allergy and one person in our party is a strict vegetarian). The mushrooms they put out as a starter were super unique, and we loved the pickled appetizer for the table, and my husband and I had the boar and the steak, both of which were great. I also loved the buckwheat chocolate cake for dessert. When we go back, I think I'd like to try the tasting menu. read more

Went to this new iteration for the first time tonight and it was incredible. When I say 'iteration', I mean that I grew up about fifty feet away, lived across the street following college during my dot-com days and have recently returned to the area, but I've been going to various restaurants at this location for decades--Peacock, Craigie, Ten Tables, and now Forage. It can be somewhat hit or miss from what I understand, but the meal we had was among the best I've had in years. Anecdotal evidence suggests that things are settling down in the kitchen in the best possible way. We went on a Sunday and all had the set menu for a very, very reasonable $39. Had a small misstep when a small drop of olive oil was spilled on my dress. But the owner stepped in and took care of everything. Lamb was excellent and spot on. The crowd, the server, the vibe is "very smart"/ casual or semi-casual. Even the servers look like professors or something. Anyways, the servers are very attentive, caring, and will do best to accommodate. The food was expensive, however, it tasted really great. If I had a food like this in Boston (not in Cambridge), the price would be almost doubled. They also play great music for dining (exciting, uplifting, crazy solo jazz). Also, the place is acoustically treated (bass trap wall sofa, absorption panels). That helps people communicate in there. The place is pretty thoughtful. About food: I was surprised you can add more dimensions to the tase of the food (in a pleasing way, of course) that's how I knew the cook here is skilled. I really love this place and I really wish I could give it 5 stars, but the noise level is just too much and the tables in the back are really crammed in (the last time I went the waitress kept bumping into my chair since there was no room for her to maneuver). I have been here 3 times, once for an amazingly creative theme dinner (chocolate and mushrooms!), and twice on busy weekend evenings. The food is delicious and imaginative, and the staff is friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgable. The tasting menus/wine pairings are one of the best deals in the area. For an upscale restaurant, I like how unpretentious it is--everyone is just super excited about good food/wine. I think I enjoy it better as a smaller party of 2 than as a larger party of 4 given the aforementioned noise level. Or perhaps not on a Saturday night. But I will keep coming back; my taste buds demand it. read more

We had a great meal here just yesterday, and were thrilled that the previous location of Ten Tables in Cambridge is up to great things! Key additions include a more creative farm-to-table menu, a great selection of novel cocktails and wines to pair with the meals, and an updated ambiance that really set Forage apart. For food, the ample use of seafood, and non-traditional grains/vegetables is a welcome change from the majority of "New American" cuisine in Boston/Cambridge - most of which seems meat-heavy, and sticks to well known, yet less common veggies. The menu features what looked to be delicious meat items as well, all with creative fixings. Our meals were pescetarian focused and, in good form, carried the subtle flavors of scallops, catfish, and shrimp to the forefront along with complementary green and grain flavors. The bartender was excellent, and the creative cocktails were both approachable, but did not disappoint in providing something genuinely unique. Additionally, great cocktail pairings were recommended for both our mains, as oppose to being selected, safely, but only for our already expressed liquor preferences. The only thing that could have been better featured in the restaurants menu is the farm-to-table focus. While the fare was obviously locally sourced, the story behind the seasonality or harvest of the menu would have been a welcome addition - if only for those who interest's were piqued. read more

This restaurant is everything! We recently stopped in for an anniversary dinner and chose the vegetarian and omnivore tasting menu's between us. Part of the excitement of our meal was the mystery of what each course would bring but also how it would be presented. The plates were sophisticated yet accessible with fresh and in-season ingredients elevated but never fussy. We skipped the wine pairing in favor of working our way down the cocktail list. We loved every aspect of the food and drinks, each bite and sip was artfully presented and absolutely delicious. The service was attentive and the meal was well paced. Our waitress could have been a little warmer to us but we overlooked it. There was a small snafu with our second course but it was quickly corrected and more than made up for with a glass of dessert wine on the house. The prices were very reasonable for this 5 star experience. Even the music that was gently playing in the background added an element to our evening. We loved every aspect of our visit to Forage and we can't wait to go back. read more

We had a terrific birthday dinner here last night, featuring the omnivore tasting menu with wine pairing. Every course was delicious. Highlight was the pork loin -- so luscious, juicy and well-seasoned -- easily the best I have ever had. The wines were well paired, and we tasted several that we will look for to buy on our own. The owner was present and active in the dining room, explaining the wines and giving us little extras as well. This is a neighborhood gem creating inventive food at a very fair price, with lots of options for vegetarians. read more

A lovely restaurant with fantastic vegetarian and vegan options! My husband and I have gone twice, and we had the vegan tasting menu both times -- the four course version and the six course version -- and on both occasions, we loved every course *except* for the 'main' dish. The 'mains' weren't exactly bad... they just weren't that good, which was disappointing because everything that came before and after was absolutely fantastic! But still, the tasting menu is such a fun experience with a ton of creative, interesting, seasonally-inspired dishes that are beautifully presented with excellent service. Worth noting that Forage has pretty great cocktails and a nice selection of beer. The ambiance also makes for a good date night option, and if you indicate that you're there for a special occasion when you make reservations, you'll likely get a celebratory treat brought to you at the end :) We will certainly be back again. read more

We went again to Forage last night, hoping it would be better than the first time, but it was similarly underwhelming. I was pleased to see a Meatless Monday fixed price menu, but some of the dishes on it were very "meh," such as the fritters (they were tasteless). The two best dishes we got were the vegan sausage (not on the tasting menu) and a pasta dish with lentils that was on the tasting menu. The mole dish was only so-so (I've had much better for far less at a number of local Mexican places) and the dessert was downright weird (that cinnamon ice cream is really overpowering). The drinks were only okay for the high cocktail price. While the people there were lovely and the place itself it beautiful and intimate, there are so many better places to go in Cambridge/Boston/Somerville if you're looking and willing to pay for a good meal. My husband and I went to Forage last night for the first time and were so glad we did- the restaurant is in a cozy, modern basement space that makes for a lovely intimate dining experience. We started with a delicious cocktail made with fresh ingredients that was a wonderful blend of flavors and aromas. Next was the 4 course omnivore tasting menu with wine pairing that is a great way to taste several dishes on the main menu paired with unique and thoughtful wines. The portions were larger than we expected and we loved the unique pickled vegetables and the perfectly seasoned and tasty muscles. I am vegetarian and was excited to try their 'meatless monday' tasting menu. It was underwhelming. Four of the six courses were all veggie based - no grains were served and the only protein was a small portion of tofu dip. The last two courses were dessert based. The veggies were flavorful and presented with interesting flavors. But it was disappointing there were no grains. I don't know why vegetarian has been reduced to veggies only. Also the portions were very small. I Would have preferred fewer courses that were larger and no more than one dessert course. Had it not been for the bread served at the beginning of the meal we would have left hungry. Parking is a bit challenging as well. read more

My friend and I went here for New Year's Eve, and we had a wonderful time. The service was excellent. The menu consisted of foods which had been preserved over the summer, and we especially enjoyed the watermelon jerky. I was not a fan of the hanger steak, but I seem to be in the minority on that.
