I'm recommending Foothill Car Care, owned by Kilen not because of what they repaired but what they didn't. It can be difficult to find a business that operates with a high degree of integrity, honesty and professionalism BUT Foothill Car Care has all of these. Our 2007 Highlander broke down, the engine seized up. Long story short Kilen talked with me and said, "Honestly I would not recommend repairing it because the costs would outweigh the worth of the vehicle". I was charged $747 for a valve adjustment on my 2021 Honda CRV. The dealership does the same job for $389. When I asked why the difference, I was told "It's a big job. We had to remove the heads." Insulting since I know what's involved in the job...take off the valve cover and do the adjustment. Replace cover with a new gasket. And there's only one head on a 4 cylinder engine. The manager offered me a $25 gift certificate but no explanation for the $700 in labor on the invoice. No indication of the number of hours or the hourly rate. Very unprofessional. read more

Foothill Car Care provides an excellent service. My HONDA '21 Hybrid battery died and AAA will not replace batteries on HYBRIDS!! AAA turned the call into a tow to FOOTHILL CAR CARE's courtesy on Main Street, Grass Valley. They replaced the battery, checked out the auto, and sent a driver to pick me up and give me a ride to the shop. From five to one because on Dec 31st I scheduled to have my fuel injectors replaced on Jan 13 all confirmed through text and phone call. Come the day of appt I was told in person the parts have not arrived - thus them calling to check and told either later that day or following day. What was irritating is I own my biz so scheduled with all my clients to take the entire day off to get this squared away. They could have contacted my Friday or sometime in advance to say parts are delayed. I lost work I needed. Funny thing Lacy as always msgs my phone to ask how are things in which I responded this info with no response back. I won't recommend this business moving forward. Took our truck in for a brake inspection due to squealing brakes. Was charged $60 just to look at them. They said we needed back brakes (only the back) and it would cost $700. Yikes!!! We thought that was DOUBLE what we should be charged so we called another local auto shop and they quoted us at $350. Worst service ever! My Suburban broke down on my way to Nevada City. As they were the mechanic across the street from the towing company I decided that it would be easier to leave the car there. After checking up the transmission which I already knew was broken in two pieces, they told the cost of the repair: 1,050$ for the parts and 400$ for the labor, plus tax. She told me that this part could be delivered the next day and that I had to be quick on making a decision because the car need to be out of the way within the next 48 hours, to put pressure on me and accept the deal... The same day I still decided to call a few mechanics to check up on the price as I found it very spicy to say the less. Chevy Auburn which was clearly not the cheapest said 950$ out the door for a brand new transmission! My car is from 2002 and doesn't worth a lot, so I asked if they could find a remanufactured part still. Still the same day, they did found a part within the hour for 650$ when I found one at 250$ myself. When I told her she said that they couldn't wait for the part because the vehicle needed to be out of the way the next day. And when I explained that the part I found could be delivered the next day, then it was no longer a problem of time, but against the policy of the house... Then she threaten to call the police on an abandoned vehicle if I didn't accept the deal and leave the car one more day. 4 calls on the phone, I never had a bad word, I never have been impolite to her. Well for me this is what I call a place where you should never get your car in. Go everywhere but not there. read more

I needed a smog certificate, even though we are in a global pandemic. I called Foothill Car Care, and they graciously let me get the smog check immediately. Their price was better than the two other shops I had checked with, they followed all the pandemic guidelines in terms of sanitizing, and mask wearing, and were totally kind, helpful, and friendly. Terrible experiences with Foothill Care Care in Grass Valley. Avoid them at all costs! I've now had to return (and wait extraordinary lengths of time) 3 times for them to properly complete my brake job (which still isn't done yet). They set appointments and on average my vehicle has sat in their parking lot for over 2 hours before they pull it in. Total of 7 hours wasted so far, right there... Not to mention they take 3x longer than the book says the job will take. The first time I showed up, it took 3 hours before they pull my vehicle in and they didn't 'finish' the job until 10pm!?!?! I waited there for nearly 12 hours for 2 front brakes???!!!??!! WTF? Then fluid was leaking from both front wheels, so they had me come back... Again 2 hours waiting for them to pull it in and realize they forgot to replace my axle seals during the job... And, they weren't going to fix it then and there, they wanted me to come back again. So I called them and again, they chose the day, date and time for my appointment. Now it has been over 2 hours since my appointment and my vehicle is still in their parking lot. When asked they shrugged it off and simply replied and said 'Its a 6 hour job' Wow... Thanks for the heads up about that when you set my appointment. I'm astounded that this place was recommended to me by someone I (used to) respect. Terrible service. Don't recommend. They are 'nice' but they don't have what it takes. read more

Used them in the past, will not, ever again. First bad experience, clutch replacement, first clutch disk failed after one week. Sent in to get the disk replaced... again, failed after two weeks, third disk was finally installed correctly. Second bad experience, car taken in for brake work. Afterwards, drove to San Francisco, while in San Fran, discovered that one wheel was not torqued down by the shop, required some repairs after road-side assistance had to be called to allow us to drive home. read more

This place is horrible. Probably my worst experience with car care EVER! We tried to have our front brakes replaced by this shop and after being in three times at this point, our brakes have still not been properly replaced, and we had to bring the car in again because they broke something the last time they were working on it. They seriously lag in getting your car in even if you have an appointment... and for sub-par work it really is not worth the wait. The last time we were driving home, unsatisfied because they didn't finish the job only to notice they left our hood open! Avoid this place and you and your car will both be better off, seriously frustrating endeavor. read more

So first off let me be clear that the guys who work at this place are somewhat free from my criticism. With that beimg said, DO NOT take your vehicle to this place. They are way to over priced. The front desk lady is not only rude she is completely unprofessional. I bought a car off of Robert which I was told it had been worked on and that the car is good to go. First the paper work was faulty and the title had already been filled out to some other person which caused a bunch of non sense when it came to register it. Then not even a week after owning the car the thermostat housing cracked and the head gasket blew! So to sum it up, I urge EVERYONE to not do business with ROBERT. We had an unexpected emergency yesterday when my car just wouldn't start. We tried what we knew and nothing would fix it. I needed to leave for work which meant I was heading out of town for two days. Although we have two cars I couldn't just take our second car and leave my husband and kids stranded for two days. What if there were an emergency? A fire? I called our insurance who sent out a tow truck; they recommended towing it to foothill. I knew nothing about them nor had I done any research. But I trust my insurance company (USAA) and they recommended it so I agreed. I couldn't be more happy! The guys at foothill we're so nice, so understanding. They answered all of my questions and were patient and kind despite me making several phone calls. They diagnosed my problem within 30 minutes of the car arriving and then when I explained how important it was to get my car back today they fixed it the same day even though I had no appointment and it was already late into the afternoon. And the charge was only $56 in the end. A rodent had chewed through a wire. They could've charged me a ton, I was completely vulnerable, but they didn't. They got my car back to us within about 2 hours. Very trustworthy! I highly recommend their services! read more

I have taken my brand new car here for first 3 oil changes after 5000, 10000 and 15000 miles . each time they told me I needed a new air filter that mine was clogged. At first I trusted them and had it done ; then I looked up online how long air filters last on average it's at least 10,000 - 15k miles. Fourth time i went in told em I didn't want the Air filter they tried again to sell it to me. The very next time I took my car to get oil change else where I had them specifically look at the air filters. They were completely fine . After 5000 miles . These guys are crooks. The last time I went here for oil change they wanted to replace my front brake pads telling me they were almost gone down to 2mm . They also said my back brake pads were very thick around 8mm. And didn't need replacement . This alone was very suspicious ; I immediately took it to another place to take a look at brakes. Both front and rear brakes were worn about the same and had more than 7mm left. These guys are complete crooks . Adding on excessive charges that's unnecessary more than 4 times . I'm new to the area, didn't really know where to take my car for tune ups and what not. So after a few other places turned me down because they were booked I decided to try this place instead. I explained to the guy at the front Desk (I want to say his name is David, but I'm not sure) that my car would "jump" a lot when it hadn't been driven for a week, or would also do it between 40 to 50 mph. He explained to me that it might be a misfiring engine coil, but he would have to check. I also asked them to change my oil and rotate the tires as well. They rotated the tires for free since it was my first time with them. I got a call later the next day from them saying that it was a misfiring engine coil and the car would be later that day. My mom owned this car before I bought it from her. She wasn't able to get the "jump" fixed and she took it to multiple mechanics before finally giving up, because none of them knew what it was. Once I bought it from her I took it to a couple of mechanics myself, who all also told me they didn't know what the "jump" was. This was back in San Jose. Now fast forward to the present and I take my car to this place and they fixed it on the first try. My car stopped giving me problems after that. No more "jumps". They also noted some other things wrong with my vehicle that they fixed as well. The price wasn't outrageous and my car has been running like new since. I was originally going to give only four stars, but the last time I went here for an oil change the lady at the front desk was very courteous, and explained that it might take a minute for my papers to print since they were on a new system and had to get some new information from me for my file with them. Made some nice small talk with her while we waited for everything to be sorted out. Decided the pleasant experience the second time around was enough to give them five stars instead of four. read more

Long story somewhat shorter: I went in for a simple oil change. These guys broke the cover on my car that lies below my engine to protect it from debris, etc. They didn't tell me they broke it, and they rigged it with zip-ties to somewhat sit/hang in it's normal position so that I wouldn't notice. I found out in a VERY unpleasant way that they had broken the cover - I was driving a very long distance to visit family, alone and very late at night, when suddenly a horrible noise began from underneath my car. It was VERY cold (below 0, literally) and VERY desolate when I was forced to pull over on the side of the highway. Underneath my engine was the cover, hanging half-on and half-off, dragging and banging against my undercarriage as I drove, interfering with my steering. I saw that 2 of their zip ties had broken, but the other 2 were still holding and completely unreachable. I tried driving to somewhere with good lighting (30 miles away, banging and dragging and pulling the whole way). It was so horrible driving that way so I pulled over again and crawled under the car in the snow and slush and below 0 temps, trying to cut or pull the rest of the cover off. Again I couldn't get it off, again I drove more to find a better place to deal with it. Finally I made it to a truck-stop, where a kind fellow helped me jack up the car and physically cut the cover to remove as much as possible. Foothill never apologized, nor did they offer me any compensation or discount on future services. Had they been honest from the beginning, and let me know they broke it and showed me the 'rigging' they did, I could have been spared a HORRIBLE driving experience. I will obviously NEVER go to them again, nor do I recommend anyone else go there, unless you like to gamble with your safety and comfort when it comes to your vehicle. read more

Rip off city! Beware of their "diagnostic fee"!! Took it in a for a battery replacement, came back and they wanted like $190 for running an electrical system diagnostic!! Then proceeded to tell me my brakes were at 30% and I needed new brakes, and my transmission fluid needed to be replaced, etc.. etc.. etc... I told them I only wanted to pay for the battery, the office manager became very agitated and told me I signed an authorization / estimate. Like a fool I paid it and a few weeks later went back for another repair (didnt learn my first time!) OMG - I spent over $500 chasing down a simple thermostat problem. DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID! read more

I brought my car in for an oil change. I didn't feel like working on it myself (gravel driveway, no concrete) so, hey, I'll pay somebody else. When I brought it in, I said "There is a leaking transmission cooler line, the lower one, on the radiator. If it can be fixed with an O-ring or just fixed for under $250, just go for it. I probably won't be available by phone during the day" When I pick the car up, they inform me that it will be another $48 for somebody to put the car back up on the lift, wipe a few parts down with a rag and add a chemical dye to some fluids so they can see where it's coming out. The oil change was $70. I get in, turn the key, the service reminder is still on. Sigh. The guy jumps in the car and, without removing his gloves, starts poking at the console to reset it. Sigh. ... So it's $70 for an oil change and if I want them to do, youknow, anything mechanic-y I have to pay another $50. I don't know what "touching the interior with clean hands" would cost. Every time I let somebody else work on my cars, I am reminded that, hey, I've got ASE mechanic credentials and I should do it my damn self. Today was no different. Maybe I need to adjust my expectations for mechanics, or just quit being such a ball breaker in general. read more

My wife takes her SUV in and they charge her $15 a quart for castrol synthetic oil when I know for a fact it costs less than $8 a quart at Walmart and $10 at best from riebies, autozone or o'reilys. Ok, so you guys charge 33%-ish over parts, good to know. And another $54 dollars for labor for something that takes all but 20 min to do?!
