He has good advice on what fish and corals can cohabitate, and is a good sounding board about what just happened when creatures die. I can tell they've long been dead too, by how dark they are. Other shops in Upland sell for half the price and last weeks. This shop didn't have dates marked on the container. The best fish shop in town!! Almost all my fish in my 2 tanks are from here. Inside the place there is a few rows of fish, and an area for rocks, fish food, and a few animal supplies. In one area they have birds, reptiles, and a few pets like mice. There are 3 rows of freshwater, and 1 row of saltwater. Some of them are very rare indeed. There's one area that has used supplies like tanks, saltwater filters and a few other things. They also have things like crickets and super-worms. The owner is very nice for sure. This place is a ma and pa shop. It has been here for years. I'm very surprised how long the have been in business. Almost all fish are very healthy looking and pretty looking. You will see a photo of our now dead Koi fish, and our others remain sick and likely dying thanks to the owner of Foothill Aquatic & Pets in La Verne, CA. My wife went in to purchase a small box of Tetra Algae Blocks, but the owner said he did not have those. Instead, he talked my wife into purchasing (6) large blocks, several times the size of the small blocks, and said to place all of them into the Koi Pond. We normally place (2) of the small blocks. The owner then pushed my wife into buying API Salt for the Koi Pond, which we have never used. Now one Koi is dead, and the rest are sick and/or dying. In typical (IT"S NOT MY FAULT) fashion, the owner blames Tetra and API for killing the Koi, and not his greedy desire to sell products too strong, and unnecessary for our size Pond. This local fish store has been open for many, many years. The owner keeps a good variety of freshwater and saltwater fish, a few basic aquarium plants (sorry Planted Tank owners), as well as a few birds, reptiles and rodents. The livestock seem relatively healthy and I haven't encountered a tank where the fish had obvious disease. The owner has been in the aquarium scene before I was born, so he knows quite a lot and is willing to offer you good advice if you are a serious fishkeeper. He is more interested in the health of your fish rather then making a quick sale off you. He isn't the type to sell you sick livestock. My most prized fish - a very healthy metallic scale Shubunkin was purchased from here. Occasionally, certain rare fish are available; for example my visit today had an Archerfish and a large Gold Nugget Pleco for sale. A previous 1 star reviewer who also posted today mentioned the African Grey. I wonder if he bothered asking the owner why the tail feathers were gone in the first place? I asked, and he said that the previous week a large group of kids came in and taunted the bird to high stress, which made the bird tear out it's feathers. Unfortunate, but not exactly his fault. In my past experience, other large birds here have been very healthy and vibrant. In conclusion: a decent shop, the owner is knowledgeable, and if interested would recommend you check it out despite negative reviews. read more

Very nice employees and owner. Had a large variety of fish to choose from. The owner gives you advice on how to take care of the fish. Unfortunately, I bought goldfish here for Persian new year and they didn't even last four hours!! I get that they are gold fish but come on, two died within two hours! I should mention that our family has a huge fish tank and we know how to keep fish alive. We've had fish that live for over 6 years. We are not careless pet owners. Disappointing and depressing. The extra star is for variety, but the quality of the fish is very poor. Most of the large cichlids looked very unhealthy ie sitting at the bottom of the tank, not moving etc. All the fresh water was cloudy, without exception, and the filters probably get cleaned very rarely if at all. The living conditions for the terrestrial animals was rancid and depressing as well. Seemed like the owner doesn't really care about the health and happiness of the fish/animals, as long as there's profit. My guess would be that if you buy your fish here, they will likely die shortly after. read more
