Pork egg roll (remote for size reference)
    Travis C.

Finally back open! Not to be missed egg rolls! They are huge, they are tasty, and they are greasy! Whew! Big back style! We also got wings. Fried and delicious. And full size! Pork fried rides was great as was the chicken fried rice. I also got the general tso chicken. Not at all spicy (a bit of a letdown) but the flavor was good. Oh and when you order online and think "it won't take an hour for pickup".... It did on a Saturday night! So glad they're back open!

Best Chinese food in Indy! The eggrolls are epic. I was so sad when they had to close for renovations.

It shouldn't exist, but it does. Everyone has their own opinions on the best American-Chinese place in their area. I know I have written reviews for my favorites. Foon Ying stands above all others in every single category. It won't be my personal go-to for the only reason being distance from my home -- 40 minutes round-trip. It's a gourmet experiences hiding behind counter service. The restaurant is renovated and very clean. The staff are busy every second you are there taking orders, which is a true sign of their quality. I ordered online, but you can call or order at the counter. I went at an odd hour and it was still slammed. The egg rolls make them famous, for good reason. These things are monsters and yet, light and delicate. The offerings are nothing out of what you expect, but it just taste better than anywhere else. The higher quality nature of each item is so apparent. I ordered the typical General Tso Chicken and they actually honored the "extra spicy" note by adding real peppers and chili oil, instead of just some sambal oelek (which I do like). I didn't want to wait for the car ride home so I ate it in the parking lot. The Crab Rangoon was the best I ever had. The Egg Roll made me cry and my main course was just...so much better. Nothing will beat my hometown favorite, but remove nostalgia and Foon Ying is the best in Indiana.

Pork chow mien in the container, pork egg roll and crab rangoon

The food was fresh and hot. Portions were plentiful with enough left over for a meal the next day. The crab Rangoon is light, crispy and the flavor is spot on. Now let's talk about that egg roll! I could eat one of them and call it lunch. It is so full of delicious filling with the crispy outside. Best egg roll I have had in my life.

Large House Special Fried Rice, Shrimp Egg Rolls, Side of Yellow Gravy

Been coming to Foon Ying since I was a kid. My parents always drove from the west side to the east side just for this restaurant. This is a traditional favorite for my family. I highly recommend the house special fried rice, shrimp egg rolls, chicken or shrimp egg foo young, fried chicken wings. And I highly recommend a side of yellow gravy for dipping your egg rolls and chicken wings. I also put the yellow gravy over my rice. I put that ish on everything lol...

As you can see there is nothing in the fried rice. It's hard to tell from a photo but it was also extremely mushy.

The fried rice is the barometer for if the food is going to slap. Confirmed. This is our new spot.

The restaurant has a very cute aesthetic and plenty of seating whether you wanna sit at a table or at the bar. It was a little bit of a busier time when we came for lunch, but it didn't take our group too long to be seated. They have plenty of options if you have a taste for sushi or if you want a regular protein based entrée with rice I also appreciate that there were a lot of veggie options for non-meat eaters. I had a dish with broccoli and shrimp and it had great flavor and the portion size was perfect. It also came with a small side salad or soup before your entree came out.

It looks appealing on the…read moreoutside and, walking in, also has nice booths, some tables, and a unique, beautiful, large bar/sushi counter. The restaurant presents like a higher-end sushi house, but this is a little mismatched with the slightly loud 80s pop tunes streaming from the speakers. It seems like instrumental soft Japanese stings would be more appropriate. Also a little mismatched in the ambiance is a giant TV screen on the back wall (near out table), and large TVs over the bar area. They just don't "look right" with the tables and interior décor. The menu seems on par in price and offerings for similar-style sushi houses. We split edaname($6), I got the sushi dinner ($23) and hubs got the special lobster & seafood clay pot ($36). I drank water and he had 1 diet coke, so everything with tax + 20% tip came to $90. The food is presented beautifully, and tasted good. Both dinners had choice of soup or salad, and we each got ginger salad. We're lovers of ginger dressing. This one was ok - tasted good but could have used more, as I has lots of un-dressed lettuce in the bowl. My sushi dinner was fine but nothing extraordinary. For the "special" lobster & seafood clay pot, presentation was again beautiful, aroma and taste were good, nice sauce, but it was a little underwhelming in both seafood contents and amount. That being said, we had a small amount of leftovers from the hub's dish (some rice, sauce and veggies), and they present very nice takeout bags with a thermal lining. We actually ended up giving the container of food to a homeless man downtown, so I did not eat the leftovers, and, admittedly, it was not enough for a full lunch. So overall, while the food was very pretty and also tasty, we have a lot of other sushi options that give more bang to the buck for our quantity and atmosphere preferences. #yum #ReviewsByRL

The place is pretty with a nice bar area and the ambiance is nice with good lighting. We sat in one of the booths which was dirty but on the plus side love the privacy of them. To start the food took a long time to come which is always understandable and sometimes expected at fine dining, but was not worth the wait or price. First, the steak was said to be good, but the asparagus side was underwhelming with little to no seasoning/ butter. The lamb chops come with Alfredo pasta and was not seasoned and just not good. We had three orders of those so everybody can't be wrong. The shrimp and linguine pasta was dry with no sauce at all. On top of that the noodles were brittle and hard. I asked if we could have more sauce which helped a little bit. But i could not eat it because the noodles themselves were hard and dry and i did not want to send anything back because of the company i had. The presentation was pretty but the execution did not land. We also got espresso martinis and raspberry martinis and those were made well. For a place like this you just expect a little more pizazz and things to be on point! Especially at the price point they are at i expect everything to be tasty and saucy and flavorful and juicy. Can skip this one.
