I come in from work EXHAUSTED just wanting to get some food and watch the game with my friends and when I went to order the bartender looks at me and says "are you with them." I waited a year to write this review for Fools Gold. Overall a 4.2 out of 5 as I am sadden to learn that the long time bartender, Roger has moved away to Ohio. FG hired two bartenders to replace him. Both are nice people, I bet, however, I still have not learn their names. Roger was the friendliest guy. He took care of everyone who walked in. He never asked you to buy a drink nor was I asked to buy a meal to stay at the bar (ps: I have dined and drank here so don't think that I didn't do either). In fact, I remember walking past by the bar on a random Friday. Roger recognized me and said hi. People like him made me feel like I am a part of this loving community in the big apple. This bar is one of its kinds in the LES because I have spent now close to two years hanging out here. Mostly on board games Mondays with old friends and acquaintances. I can honestly say some of my friends from the last two years are from this bar. Nevertheless, other than a good selection of drinks, the bar's food is not bad neither. A lot of our friends like their chicken wings, fries and I enjoyed the salad from here. This is one of the few bars where nerds meet the sports fans. The TVs do engage the sports fan on football and baseball nights, with music and noise growing increasingly loud as the light gets dim by the minutes and the night sets in. It will make you get closer to your friends and scream louder on their faces. This is not your typical bar scene. It's literally one giant melting pot. You have those who enjoy drinking and chatting at the bar, you have some serious board games players, and you have your sports people who like to watch and yell on the tv sometimes. It's crazy. CONs - I do dislike the bathrooms as it is so tiny and it can get smelly sometimes. I also dislike how dark the bar gets overtime. The Steak Tacos were pretty good which came with marinated steak, feta, lettuce, jalapenos, onions, and cilantro lime sour cream. I've been to this place a handful of times by now and I just had to rave about how AMAZING their Irish nachos are. Instead of actual tortilla chips, they replaced them with waffle fries (YUM ) and topped it with ranch, guac, salsa, cheese, etc. I opted to add in extra fried chicken pieces this time and that was definitely the right call. It comes out topped high in a giant pan, enough to share with 4 people! They offered an expansive amount of options for their drinks with a focus on their beer selection. I loved the rustic decor and lax atmosphere of this place. Given that I went on a weekday, it was relatively empty besides the bar. On weekend nights I would imagine they'd get a lot more traffic. So I want to start off by saying, I understand that scheduling is hectic; however I was only upset at the way the manager handled this issue. My fiancé and I made a reservation shortly after the NFL divisional finals were completed. This was early on and understandably we made sure this was correct. Fast forward to today (the day of the reservation) and we go into the bar, ask for the server since the front was empty and the bar was full; and they redirected us to the back area where the management was at. I let them know that we had a reservation and the person in charge said she "was confused because she would never take a reservation at this time" and asked to see confirmation. We had connection issues so walked away and I understood, because I initially thought that she was just a server who was confused. She also mentioned that "someone else must have been responding because she would never accept a reservation for a Super Bowl" which was weird but I brushed it off. Once we were able to pull up the emails (attached below with time stamp), I asked what her name was(since I had not before) and she said her name was Lindsey. I mentioned to her that I was confused, since she had responded twice (and even mentioned the Super Bowl/ how crowded it would be) and CC'd everyone to confirm our reservation. When I mentioned this and physically showed her my emails on my phone she immediately said "you're welcome to leave a review, my name is Lindsey"; which left a bad taste in my mouth. I definitely could reason with a misunderstanding (considering the busy timing) but not a blatant lie. Definitely upset at how this was handled; don't know if I would trust this place again regarding reservations. read more

We wandered by this bar after devouring a huge brunch so stopped in for an afternoon weekend pint. They have a small front section facing the street where we people watched for a moment in time, enjoying the beautiful spring weather. Fools Gold offers many many craft beers and the bar was stocked with tons of interesting looking liquors I had never seen before. Our bartender was super sweet (Whitney?) and really warmed up to us when we mentioned we were visiting from Toronto. She even ended up buying one of our pints when we went to settle the bill, saying "Welcome to New York!" For some this may not be a big deal but for us, it was a super nice gesture for sure. As mentioned we were totally stuffed so didn't try any of the food items but they do offer a bottomless brunch with beers for $40 so go check it out!
