The food was very good. It's convenient. And staff is very friendly. And the prices make it worth going back again and again.

The Bronx Deli - Eggplant Grinder

"No matter where I go I know where I came from…read more From the Bronx" (Jennifer Lopez) Trivia Time! Q: Name the only New York City borough that's part of the United States mainland? A: The Bronx! Besides Jennifer Lopez, the Bronx may be best known as the birthplace of Hip Hop music, Arthur Avenue Italian bakeries and grocery stores, Yankee Stadium and the NY Yankees. It sure looks like the owners of Oxford's ''The Bronx Deli" are Yankee fans, because their sandwich menu has over 20 choices named after Yankee stars or baseball in general, plus hundreds of NY Yankee photos on their wall. Some of the sandwich names are The Yogi with chicken and eggplant, The Babe with turkey and pepperoni, The O'Neill Deal with ham, sopressata, salami, and provolone, Bern Baby Burn with chicken, hot peppers and mozzarella, and the coolest one -Robbie Cano, Don't Ya Know with Roast Beef, American cheese and red peppers. We wanted to pick up something to have for dinner last night and decided on a Goodfella grinder ($10.99) with Eggplant, fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers, oil and garlic, and a side of tortellini salad with peppers and sun dried tomatoes. The grinder was terrific -a big loaf of perfect Arthur Avenue bread, plenty of fresh eggplant and mozzarella slices, and nice marinated red pepper slices. (Pro Tip - the Goodfella doesn't include marinara sauce -if you want that order an Eggplant Parmesan sandwich). The tortellini salad was very good as well, plenty of pasta and tomatoes in a balsamic dressing. Our grinder and side totalled just $17 -not bad for a dinner for two. We dealt with two employees. The young lady who rang us up was a sweetheart -super nice and much more engaging than the young man who made our sandwich. As a former Bronxite myself, I loved visiting the Bronx Deli and checking out the photos on the wall. My favorite was an autographed picture of Yankee royalty taken at an Old Timers Day -Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra and Casey Stengel. All are Hall of Famers. Go check out the Bronx Deli if you're either a lover of Italian food, a Yankee fan, or both.

Five stars forever for the homerun grinder. It's my favorite hot grinder of all time. That is all.read more

The Bronx Experience in Shelton If you want the soul of…read moreArthur Avenue without the trip to New York, Gaetano's Deli in Shelton is the undisputed heavyweight champion. Founders Guy and Milanno actually got their start on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx back in 1990, and they've successfully transplanted that high-energy, authentic Italian spirit right into Fairfield County. The Foundation: Arthur Avenue Bread The bread at Gaetano's is legendary. They source it directly from the Bronx, ensuring that every sandwich starts with a foundation of beautiful, crusty sesame seed bread. * The Texture: It has that signature "snap" on the outside while remaining airy and soft on the inside. * The Flavor: The toasted sesame seeds add a nutty depth that complements the salty Italian meats and tangy vinegars perfectly. The Gold Standard Chicken Cutlets Many places claim to have good cutlets, but Gaetano's cooks theirs to absolute perfection. * The "Kovac's Special": Often cited as their flagship sandwich, it features a chicken cutlet so tender and well-seasoned it stands out even when paired with heavy hitters like prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers, and broccoli rabe. * Crispy & Light: The breading is never greasy; it's thin, golden, and provides the perfect crunch in every bite. Unbeatable Value and Atmosphere Despite the premium quality and the "Bronx-to-CT" logistics, the value here is incredible. You can find several of their least expensive--yet still massive--sandwiches (like the John Wayne or various parmigiana rolls) starting around $11.50 to $14.00, with many hearty heroes hovering right at that $15.00 mark. The service team is a well-oiled machine. They are fast, friendly, and carry that classic deli "swagger" that makes the atmosphere feel alive. It's loud, it's bustling, and it's unapologetically Italian.

I imagine this place is absolutely slammed on weekday lunch. We went in mid afternoon on a Saturday…read moreso the wait wasn't too bad. I went for the kovac special...a hero loaded with chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers, prosciutto, and sautéed broccoli rabe. I added balsamic and it really set it off. All of their food is fresh and the bread is unreal. I believe they get it daily from Arthur Ave. My wife got the Stratford & main which was just chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, balsamic and roasted peppers. Only nitpick was that we felt a little rushed to order, and maybe we would have gotten something different but you really can't go wrong with anything at this place. The shop is loaded with various Italian imported foods, but didn't see any tables to sit and eat inside, so be sure to grab & go. Highly recommend.
