I honestly just started to shop at Big Y because in my opinion they we're always expensive. I was in the area one day and decided to try them out. I was surprised by some of the sales they had. I found a bag of frozen Chicken Wings for 8.99 and there were about thirty wings inside the bag. What a great price!! We visited the store in Branford. It is a beautiful store - clean, spacious, friendly, helpful and courteous employees. We went there looking for an Apple pie for my dad who was at the nearby CT Hospice facility. We found the PERFECT locally made perfectly sized pie. It was delicious and my dad thoroughly enjoyed it. Using instacart turned into nightmare...never received order I made supposed to be delivered by 6pm...then pushed to 7:30pm..then 830pm...then 9:15pm...then 9:45pm...then pushed to 8am tomorrow...for a company to use a unreliable service to help its customers and then get overcharged what the instore price is is bad business...I love Big Y but using a unreliable service to provide for their customers needs to be addressed..I am a disabled person and can't drive ..if I could get a ride I would but most times that's impossible...using Instacart could be a big problem bin the future ..I might need to go to another place to shop that is a more reliable delivery program...so I can get my food as promised..not what I went through today..that's the reason for one star ..I go hungry tonight because of an unreliable service... read more

One star for the idiotic entrance and parking design! There's only one way in (unless you count the side entrance from the side street that's curved away from the main road into which there is no left turn. So the main entrance gets backed up with traffic because it leads right into the front door of the store which has a pedestrian cross walk and stop sign. Good luck getting through during peak hours! This has got to be the friendliest grocery store I've ever been to. People will always greet you and are willing to help no matter what they're doing. I love their hot bar but, sometimes they are SUPER skimpy with the sauces added to the wings, like someone did them in a hurry. That's my only gripe (hence the 4 stars). Big Y bakery!! I forgot to order a cake for a little one's birthday.. I was at work and I called and ordered a cake. I wanted all vanilla and a Star Wars theme. They have me several options for vanilla frostings and fillings... and I seriously had no clue as to what I was going to get for a Star Wars theme seeing I wasn't there to pick it out. When I went to pick it up the next day, they had it ready on time AND it was exactly what I wanted! It was so delicious and the kids loved it especially the birthday boy! So extremely happy! Update: it's a great idea to have a salad and sandwich shop however..... it needs to be run correctly. Second time I got a salad and both times very slow service. I go there on my lunch hour and as the only one in line it took 16 minutes for my goat cheese salad with chicken to be made. It's on their menu. Yet there were no walnuts, they had to go get permission to get goat cheese as it was not stocked and then had to leave the station again to get the chicken as it was not stocked. Salad bar is faster and more efficient for those on a lunch break. read more

The Big Y in shelton is simply the best. The employees from Sandy in the deli, the seafood guy on Sunday, Catrina at the register and super especially to Laura the front end supervisor. We come from Milford weekly its well worth it, prices the cleanliness and the great flow of the store. But again Laura goes above and beyond the call. This particular model emphasizes fresh and freshly-made foods with a large bakery, deli, fresh produce, and pre-made meals area just as you walk in. I love this store. I will choose it over Shop Rite and Stop & Shop every time. It is so clean, which is part of the reason why I love it! I had to go to Shop Rite a few days ago because it was the closest thing to me and I couldn't believe how grungy and gross it was compared to Big Y! My only complaint would be the lack of baggers/self-checkout. You always have to bag your own items, which I find odd and causes me to feel rushed. read more

The store is clean bright with a wide selection to meet peoples needs. The staff is friendly and smiles something you don't see much of nowadays. The prices seem higher than other markets in the area. Parking is decent unless it's a Friday night. Two bars on the same grounds. There are many options for to go food as well. This store has the best customer service/staff in the area. Went to the bakery yesterday looking for the cookies that were on sale. They were out of the cranberry walnut. Asked the bakery staff if there were any in the back and they offered to look. When they didn't find any the baker actually offered to bake some up right away while I did my other shopping. Came back in 20 minutes and they were packed and ready to go. Hats off to these fabulous ladies in the bakery dept.! read more
