Ok my visits here are few far and in between and I only come because they stay open later than most stores. In the past you use to be able to come here and get pretty good deals but that seems to be long gone. Came here could barely find a basket to shop for food. The produce seems to be pretty fresh. There are some hotspots here and there that some of the produce could be a little bit fresher, especially with the tomatoes and the avocados. The other fruit and produce seem to be pretty good. They do have a smaller section of organic produce that seems to be fairly stocked well but price a little higher than normal. The staff is always friendly here. I've never had any issues with checkout. The parking lot could be a little cleaner as there is a lot of homeless that are in the front of the store and on the side of it. They also have security so that's good. This is not my typical store that I would go to, but I have and will when I'm in a crunch. read more

I just left this store, I had gone in for beef ribs for my dogs ( spoiled I know) anyway they only had cut ones, I asked The meat department manager Jose if had any whole ones, what a nice guy. He had a funny personality and went back to get me 2 big packs..took him only a minute, I left the store after telling the store manager how awesome Jose is .I had a big smile on my face all the way home:) that doesn't happen to often after buying groceries! I'll start my review by saying that this place was not well stocked. Many of the items on my list were not available. Several were not available in the size or brand I wanted. Some were available but not at a price I was willing to pay. I had no problem with the quality or taste of the food items I purchased. My cashier was Najavi. She was a sweet friendly gal who kept the line moving well. Most of the prices were more in line with what I'd pay at Vons not Food 4 Less, this defeated the whole reason for going outbof my way to be loyal to Food 4 Less over Vons. It also left me wondering if greed outweighed bidenomics in this case. Being the spendthrift that I openly admit I am I did NOT appreciate being charged for a bag that I didn't request , want, need, vote for,or approve the purchase of. What's a dime you may ask. Well 10 of them are a dollar and therein lies the problem. It breaks my heart to give Food 4 Less a 2 star review. Keep in mind that this review is only for this El Cajon location , and based on my most recent visit. This is the closest grocery store to me and Leslie I find myself here a lot. I know where everything is and I am most comfortable shopping here compared to other places. That being said, this place probably has a single longest lines of any grocery store I've ever been to. The lines are frequently all the way down the food, isles, and it can take upwards of 30 minutes to pay for a gallon of milk. They have something like 13 registers, and I didn't give them time only have maybe three of them manned. Between that and their in attention to the shopping carts rodeo in the parking lot, I wish there was anywhere else I could go. read more

5 stars for affordability but other things knocked down stars. Food for less is good, you get groceries for less $ , pack your own groceries in your own bags. A few interactions with the staff and they are helpful and nice to point to isles where items are at. Produce department has variety and meat department have great cuts at a affordable price. Good store for this items. I don't know about the other departments, never tried. It gets very crowded, parking is hard to find, better to go very early in the am or very late. I understand the concerns about some characters hanging around the area but I have never have a bad experience is pretty safe, Security on site. My wtf radar went off after we parked and walked towards the store. * Dear Driver of the the pos mid-80s Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera with the rattling muffler: - Please don't stop your car in the middle of the front crosswalk driveway, stopping traffic in two directions [behind you & someone trying to turn left in the intersection] just to let your passenger out. Total d!(k move. * Dear Able-Bodied [Lazy] Passenger: - Please move with some sense of urgency or a hint of courtesy by completely shutting the door all the way before you try to walk away from your car that just created a traffic jam. I saw you go back twice to slam the door. In the bakery department, there was a decent assortment of pastries, but unfortunately nothing was decorated in the holiday theme. Oh well, we settled on something. The bagged ice was perfectly located in the middle of the store nearest to the registers. We also looked for ginger ale which was available in 2-liter bottles, but not available in cans, which is what we preferred. Despite falling short in specific product availability, we felt the checkout cashier was absolutely great with us and similarily cheerful with the customers ahead of us. The vagrant population is growing... There's practically a gauntlet of panhandlers asking for change as I was going into the Food4Less from the parking lot. Leaving the store, a vagrant greeted me with a sad face and the "Brother cam you spare some change?" He was on his 3-wheeler bicycle pushed up to the front door begging... Where's the manager? The store is okay. A lot of things sold here are cheaper at Walmart so is the food really 4 less? The parking lot gets crowded very quickly. I recommend shopping in the morning even if it's via Instacart to avoid getting items out of stock. A lot of things that I was looking for were either sold out or just weren't sold at all. Lines are so, so, so, so long. It's ridiculous. I could've went home and made 3 Thanksgiving dinners in the time it took to get through the lines and out the door. Other than that, it's okay. I would say that the location on Euclid Ave. is prob the best location I've been to - other than the area it's in, but every time I come, they have what I need. read more

Letty is the best cashier at food for 4 less at 444 Broadway in El Cajon,Ca. This is my regular store and time and time again she has show what outstanding professional customer service skills she portrays. Letty is a great cashier/manger who gets in and helps her team members with cashiering, stock and helps out wherever her team needs at any time. You are definitely a great asset to your company for sure!!! I saw her give praise to one of her team member. She told him he did a wonderful and great job and to keep it up! It really made his day! He was beaming and it made him smile as he felt appreciated! To many bosses want to be just that "bosses" go to meetings and when they are in the store sit in the office and not help out! Just power hungry! Never telling their team members who are working hard for them, and making the company look good, a "thank you" or "good job", nothing!!!!! Wow, second time shopping here. Unfortunately it will be the last, see photos (YELP Deleted Pictures of huge roach). Maybe I'm wrong but isn't that some kind of roach? I felt something on my hand and looked down and that thing was crawling on me. As you can imagine I flung it off really fast but it landed on my poor daughter who then... Yeah gross... We asked for the manager but he told the employee who was helping us he was too busy and for him to handle the problem. I've been shopping here for almost two years and I'm completely happy with almost everything about this store and Food 4 Less chain in general. They have a huge selection of good quality brand products at incredibly low prices. I usually cook my food so, over the years, I've shopped at all supermarket chains in the San Diego area. In my opinion, Food 4 Less beats all other chains including Walmart, Costco, Sprouts and others. Food 4 Less has better prices of the exact same brands you see at other stores and Food 4 Less's own brand (called Kroger) is even cheaper and tastes even better. They have plenty of healthy and organic options to choose from as well. And friendly personnel. What's not to like? Packing my own groceries? That's not a big deal, I like to organize everything myself anyway and, more importantly, shopping at Food 4 Less has saved me thousands of dollars. read more

Needless to say I made it a point to keep an eye out for why and make my own judgement. I gave it 5 stars because there was a young man (employee) that was taking a handicap cart in and saw that I was trying to back up into a spot but a cart was behind me. He came over and moved the cart for me and then told me to have a great day. Wonderful attitude! THEN the young woman who checked me out was extremely patient with me and so sweet. I forgot my card and had to get my cash from the car. I didn't end up getting everything I wanted because I didn't have enough $ but she wasn't irritated by it! I don't know why I cringe everytime my mom makes me take her to Food 4 Less. I don't like this concept: "Bag your own goods, and the savings get passed to you." So basically, you're trying to tell me that your joint is cheaper than Sprouts or Vons because I'm bagging my own goods and the Bag Boy is obselete? I doubt it. Maybe there's more behind my loathing behind this discount store... My mom likes coming because she insists the key essential ingredients available here for her specialty dish are fresher than at our typical Middle Eastern grocer. What is her specialty dish that she's about to make? It's called pacha, details to come later! Me: Where are we going? Mama: Food 4 Less Me: Ew, why? Mama: I'm making pacha for your father. Me: EWWWWWW No! C'mon mom, go out to a restaurant and eat it! Mama: NO! He wants homemade. ::mumbling in Assyrian how I'm Americanized:: Me: You do know I'm leaving as soon as you start cooking that monstrosity, right? Mama: NO! You're staying and helping me. How will you make a good housewife if you don't cook? Me: I cook. You know I cook! Just not pacha. Mama: You must learn to impress your mother-in-law. Me: I won't marry a man that likes pacha. Mama: Then you'll never find a man. Prepare yourself for a brief description of pacha, which is a Middle Eastern delicacy: Basically, Food 4 Less carries "clean" (as my mother so eloquently puts it) lamb stomachs and intestines. (yes, I said stomachs & intestines) I'm not going to go into GREAT detail but am going to give you the low-down about cooking pacha. For the broth, a lamb's head is needed (yes, I said HEAD) after the broth is made, the head is tossed out. Rice, diced lamb, and other spices are stuffed into the lamb stomach and intestines and sewn shut (yes, I said SEWN, as in with a needle and a thread.) Pieces of cut lamb are placed in the broth followed by the the stuffed lamb stomachs and intestines (called mumbar in Assyrian). Boil for about an hour or more until the meat is tender and the mumbar is able to cut into. I never have friends over when my mom's cooking pacha. It's just not right. I don't want to get sued for having somebody get traumatized over seeing a lamb's head chillen on my kitchen counter, staring aimlessly. The smell alone with drive those with the strongest stomach's away. This stuff is supposed to cure hangovers, temporarily cure the flu, pink eye, or any ailment you may have. Laura the cashier with braces was so pleasant and engaging with the nice white gentlemen in front of me. When it was my turn, she didn't say hello, she was eating a granola bar and chewing with her mouth open. Laura was carrying on a conversation with another blonde cashier next to her. She ignored me, as she chewed like a cow and made a racist joke about a Hispanic girl who got busted for shop lifting. Didn't offer me a bag either. I had to ask. The Caucasian lady behind was greeted with A big hello from Laura and actually spoke to her, while eating on the job. Why oh Why does value come at a price? I've only been here 2-3 times. 1) Just to compare it to our usual Albertsons. meh, doesn't compare. 2) Grabbed some Flan to try it out. Was ok, wasn't horrible, but is nothing like the way Asian's make it... so I should really call it "Fleh" 3) Avocado's for my GF's smoothie. Every time we come in here, it's a different atmosphere than Target (which is right across the street). Food 4 Less has a distinct smell that a blind person will be like "oh yep... this is food 4 less alright".... it's got a hint of Body Odor like someone cleaning the store doesn't believe in showering. The alcohol section is "meh" as well... They don't carry the Mango Smirnoff nor Mike's Hard lemonade? Even Walmart has it... Don't expect baggers to put your stuff in a bag. You will have to do it on your own. The same time we grabbed avocado's we were looking for ice cube trays... we went down every single aisle and not one person asked if we needed help. Not to mention it was a little bit hard to figure out who worked there. There was even a family shopping AND asking people for money inside the store. o_O how does that work? Anyways... I definitely will be sticking to Albertsons... or at least Ralphs or Vons... But if I need grocery like items... I'll just grab it at Target across the street. I live closer to this particular location than the one in Santee, but try and steer clear of this one solely because it's often so crowded. Today changed that. I don't care if I only need one small item and it will add thirty minutes to my errand; I will not frequent this location again. The employees are simply beyond rude. I knew there was a few that were a bit grumpy, but the woman checking me out today was just down right hateful. As I came to the register I politely said, "Hello, how are you today?" She didn't even so much as grunt in my direction. I don't need a cheerleader type personality to check me out; I appreciate a focus on moving the line along quickly; but not even a hello after my greeting? The cashier next to her was too busy telling her how she had gotten her scan speed up from 20% to 70% after being told she needed to focus. Talking to your fellow cashier while both are supposed to be engaged in customer service, doesn't seem hyper focused behavior to me. I had an item that had apparently split on one side and noticed it only after she threw it down the belt and saw the scattered remains. I politely pointed it out and asked to have it either removed or replaced. She rolled her eyes at me, grabbed the item from my hand and asked someone to get a replacement. I'm sorry, I don't want to pay for something that is scattered across the belt. I completed loading my groceries and stood about five minutes waiting on the replacement. (Said item was literally one row over in the front area of the aisle from where I was checking out. It took me less time to gather all my groceries throughout the store as it did for the new item to be brought to me.) Thinking perhaps I misunderstood and I was to get the replacement, I asked if someone was bringing my replacement. Again, I received an eye roll and a deep huff with an exasperated "YES" in response. I again waited another 2 minutes (now waiting as long as it took me to shop my entire order) before a young girl headed to the register with my item. I would have taken a moment and spoken to a manager, but it seemed clear that this rude woman was acting in; at least a limited fashion; as the front end manager. I had certainly reached my limit with her so decided to bring it to Yelp. Oh, and let me not forget to mention an interaction I heard between another customer and employee. She was inquiring about a certain type of chips. He turned his back on her mid question and began walking away (almost running into me which is why I paid attention to the exchange) saying "how should I know? I don't work for Frito Lay." So, if you enjoy less than professional behavior and don't mind being treated like dirt, feel free to shop at this location. Grocery shopping here is always a great experience. They have amazing deals on their items. The bakery has great deals on cakes. The hot food section, delicious and fresh food, but expect some rude service around the deli/bakery area. Amazing watermelon here! They even have things like habenero peppers, vadilia onions and plantains. Unique stuff! Proteins usually have a good sale going on as well. My negative comment is that the lines are always super long. There's usually only 3 cashiers on the floor with a store full of people. Get employees on those registers please! And surprisingly today, I ran into very old veggies. They should be double checking and making sure there's good products on the floor. read more

Great prices BUT don't expect to find help in the store if you need it. The cashiers are usually friendly... Lay out is pretty easy to follow, the only real issue I've had is consistency of products. There have been many a time when they'll have certain items that i've bought for a while and then they suddenly disappear and its a pretty regular thing... Unlike most grocery stores, people here love to take up the middle of the isle and not move and cut you off and reach in front of you and block you...(hey it sounds like a California freeway at this point!) The only other complaint is that they also usually have hagglers in the parking lot and seldom do anything about it. Oh and the teenagers selling "movies" out front is good for a laugh. And the people begging for money from a population that doesn't have the "extra" change. (As if the teller at the bank slipped me an extra 20 for my good looks) This is the closest store to us so we shop her for convenience and desperation. The prices are decent and the selection has what we need. Don't go here expecting to find out of the ordinary things. If I could give less stars I would. This store is the most disgusting store I've ever been in. Theres trash everywhere, even in piles on the floor and in the corners. Theres opened and partially eaten food just sitting in random places. The floors are sticky and you get the feeling of all over stickiness like you dont wanna touch anything. The restroom is hot, muggy, stanky and has roaches. This place is in serious need of new management, a good cleaning and a health inspection. read more

The Walmart of food. Hordes of disturbing, hideous, penny-pinching obese characters trying to figure out how to load grocery bags. I walk down the meat section and nobody seems to consider that other people might want to buy meat too. Nobody moves their carts, or themselves. There are pallets in every isle so you have to search the place up and down for ways to escape. Don't ask the man to move his pallet. DO NOT. That said I buy all my groceries here. It is closer to my house than the Santee location. However this location is always crowded with long lines. Even the express checkout line where you cannot have more than 20 items is long. They don't enforce the 20 item limit on that line at all. The store is also not the cleanest either. The Santee store is cleaner and not as crowded, in my opinion. So l think l will stick to going to the Santee location. read more

I was browsing online and saw that online ordering was offered. This is a great convenience since I have three small children. I can order cakes and food trays for parties and call it a day without ever leaving my house. Unfortunately, when I arrived to pick up the order for my son's birthday they had nothing prepared. I showed them my confirmation email that I had placed five days earlier. The party was in less than two hours and they wanted me to return in an hour and a half to let them try to get everything together. Junior, the store manager, printed my order and tried to make things right. He discounted my order and asked if he could offer anything else for the inconvenience. I appreciate his efforts but at the end of the day it was a big mess. The cake was awful. It wasn't the design I had picked online but they tried. When I cut into it the icing clumped together and my guests didn't even want to eat it. I also ordered a meat and cheese tray for a group of toddlers. It was all supposed to be cubed. I mentioned that I did not want anything rolled on the tray but when I picked up the tray it had rolled meat. My party of three year olds didn't want rolled lunch meat. I also ordered a tray of chicken tenders. Those were okay. Junior discounted my order for the price of the meat and cheese tray but considering I think the whole thing should have been free. It was a good effort but there is definitely miscommunication within the store because at the end of the day I didn't get what I ordered and the stress that went along with the mix up was not worth the price I paid for the convenience. read more
