This review is for Silver and Silver only. It's crazy that a manager would leave one guy up front to be the only checker and now self checkout is not available. He is all alone no manager is there to help him and the line goes halfway across the store. That's incredible, that whoever the person in charge just left him alone to deal with everyone himself. Service there is terrible. I have been going to this Vons regularly for 35 years. The self check out is a joke. Every time I got in there the security guard and the person who is supposed to be helping the self check out folks are have a gab feast. This not just once, but every time I got in there. The regular check out which I prefer rarely has a checker working and they have the personalities of slugs. If you need help findingsomething......good luck with that. I would stop shopping there, but old ha it's die hard. However, I buy very little there anymore. It is an unpleasant, nasty place. read more

Stephanie, a 50 year old woman, who works in self checkout was one of the most unhospitable, rude, uncomfortable employee i've ever had the displeasure of interacting with. The first thing I asked her, "hi, how much is the watermelon" and she immeditately responds with "you dont get to talk to me in that tone" Im sorry, what? I just wanted to know the price of a watermelon? This human has absolutely zero customer service skills and is impressive how VONS is okay with this individual representating their corporation. If someone happens to read this, I would seriously consider shopping at a different location. The level of uncomfortable she had made me and my 80 year old father is insane, even after reflecting on the situation, I wonder if she was racist against asian americans. I've been shopping at this Vons location for years, and Stephanie at the self-checkout has always been a huge help. Anytime I have a question or run into an issue, she gets me through the checkout lane quickly and with ease and she is always professional and very knowledgeable. Stephanie always makes my life easier. I am so grateful for her. Sometimes things do not ring up correctly and it can be very frustrating. I had gone in for shopping on a Saturday morning around 11'ish and thought my bill was too high. But with a huge line as it was a weekend I checked out and reviewed my receipt. I called over a manager, a young man, to show I had been overcharged, had the items and the overcharged amounts. He was so annoyed I had stopped him from watching the checking out at the self check out, and that i had to go and get photos on my phone to show him the "proof" of what I was seeing and the pricing. Bottom line the store manager was at lunch and he even told me, "I can't help you so you will have to wait for her to return from lunch" and walked off. WTH? I have a life as well. I had fish but went to my car and waited went back to him after 10 minutes to be told by someone else who said "the manager just went to lunch for 30 minutes." Again, doesn't anyone know what is going on? I was so upset and frustrated. Stephanie remembered I had catered a party and brought a spreadsheet in to do some returns and took the time to come over to me as I explained everything that had happened from front to finish. Not wanting to hold the line up, trying to make an adjustment. She looked at the receipt asked me the total amount, verified it but more so said she trusted me as I have had my numbers always on. BUT more so made me feel valued. She also told me her General Managers position was "make the client happy" by any means, of course within reason. I received a refund right there for $9.51. I went through all of this to only get home and relaize I was uncomfortable now after 30 minutes to eat my fish-what a waste! BUT Stephanie made my day and I am so grateful that she and some other employees have just common sense instead of being rude and not wanting to be "bothered." read more

Self checkout (and the lack of meaningful customer service) is a real problem here. I often wonder how much in sales Vons loses every day because of the Self Checkout. I just had to get a few groceries but found a couple of very good deals in the wine department. Went up to check out and the exactly ONE open checkout line had 8 people waiting in the line snaking up the aisle. Not going to wait there for the few items I was getting, so I headed for the self checkout. You can't take wine through the self checkout so I told the employee I changed my mind about the almost $40 worth of wine I was going to buy. She couldn't have cared less - got this vacant stare with an "ok". When I couldn't get 2 produce items to scan, employee was busy chatting with someone, so I just left the items on the counter, paid for the rest of my stuff and left. So Vons lost about $50 worth of sales from me because of the self checkout. Your employees sure don't seem to care. If you are just getting a few items, it's better to go to Sprouts on 2nd Street. MUCH better customer service and their self checkout always has an employee there to help. BTW Vons, while I was busy navigating the self checkout, the customer next to me gave up because there was no one there available to help and walked out of the store, leaving his cart and groceries behind. read more

I usually go here because the bakery bagels are AMAZING. That's the best thing about this store!! This morning as I was checking out at the self-checkout one of the employees by the name of Stephanie was being so incredibly rude to a disabled customer. He asked for help with the price of his bagels and she was being rude when they ran into a misunderstanding. Instead of trying to understand the man, she turned him away, but not without making a few snarky comments. She said "OBVIOUSLY you don't understand English" when the man was speaking English just fine & replying to what she was saying?? I don't understand the hostility. Then she continues after he's already left, saying "go talk to your wife at home like that, not me" while her coworker was laughing right beside her. She was totally unprofessional and her behavior was DISGUSTING. Step it up, Stephanie. Be a decent person and explain yourself better when people are confused. Especially when English isn't their first language. You work in EL CAJON. There are many people who come from different backgrounds & are learning different languages. Usually I go into this Vons for only an item or two. But recently I've been trying new recipes and have almost always had a bad experience when It comes to the butcher counter. The last 4 or 5 times I have been in and DONTE has helped me, he's been so rad. I even had to call for help after waiting for a few minutes, he has heard me from the back and passed his associates (who could clearly hear and help me) and he was extremely apologetic. I said " Sorry man I don't want to be an ass or anything calling out like that". He responded by saying no I'm so sorry we should be paying more attention. I purchased a $148 grocery order for delivery. The groceries were delivered, but the milk had a hole in the carton which leaked out. I phoned for a refund. I was told that once the items are packed, Vons is not responsible for damage. Instead, the delivery service is responsible. They asked which delivery service I used. I said that was not on the receipt. They said we'll have to check. It turned out to be Uber. They gave me the number for Uber. (Again, Vons has no responsibility for refunds for damaged goods once packed.) I called Uber. They had no record of my order number. I was told I would have to phone Vons back and have them send Uber the receipt in order for them to issue me a refund for a $6.99 carton of milk. I phoned Vons back. The customer service representative advised me she did not know what to do and asked me to standby while she got someone who could help me. After waiting five minutes, I hung up. Worst customer service. I placed an Instacart order for pickup. Items were replaced with other items. (I actually walked in to check if those items were unavailable and they Were NOT) I asked to replace with the correct item and was refused service. The employee was huffing and puffing and slamming doors. Too bad it was too late to cancel my order or else i would have. If you don't like your job, go somewhere else. What can I say, it's a grocery store that has it all! But long lines is a constant at specific times so if you see them, be patient and brace yourself. Make sure to use your Vons or Albertson's rewards number you get that additional savings. They have the UPS store inside. The floral selection is quite nice and decent for grocery store flowers. One can easily put together a nice looking arrangement with the selection! They also have a deli section and a Starbucks!!!! read more

I'm from Descanso and shop at Albertsons. This Vons was gross disgusting bathrooms. Didn't have any speciality items no baggers my clerk had nails so long she could not use the keyboard only with her knuckle. Everything was at least $1 higher than my store for the same item. Hello, I'm reaching out for the first time because of a less than stellar experience at the Vons on 1201 Avocado Ave, El Cajon, CA. Have been shopping at Vons for over 20 years and by far this is the worst experience I've had, enough so to actually write something. My experience with your checker, Micah was horrific. He had attitude with customers in line, short answers, sighing and no eye contact as if customers were bothering him by being there. I asked him a simple request of not making a bag so heavy as he had shoved everything into one bag against my request. When I asked him to please place in two bag to make it easier to carry he sighed again as if annoyed. Customers behind me kept requesting he move the belt as they weren't able to place their groceries while in line, again more sighs and barely moved it for the person behind me to place some of their items. Customers also experienced the same attitude when requested Micah to please push down the grocery dividers. Maybe he was having a bad day or just didn't want to be there, but his attitude was enough for everyone in line to notice and the customer behind me to comment to myself as I'm checking out. I hope he gets better training or at the very least know how inappropriate sighing and eye rolling is especially in customer service. Do better Micah. read more

This Vons is OK but if you're expecting service like in the other Vons you might be disappointed. There are frequently long lines, and only a few checkers . Be sure to check the expiration dates in the dairy section. I have found items on the shelf that are past the expiration date. Their selection is good. This is why I have issues with buying meat. How is this even legal?! So concerning that the meat department would just slap a new sticker over an old best by date. Also, even though only a $.24 difference, concerning that the same package at the same price per pound has two different prices. Something shady definitely going in at this location. A Filipino older lady called me illegal, (Elder Filipino woman about 5'0 by the name Fergie, or close to that) As I was paying for my groceries, I was struggling to pay due to my frozen credit cards, as I had gotten a new phone for my birthday and was unable to log in for the first time to unfreeze them, so my wife who was next to me, had to let me borrow hers. Another customer from another checkout stand made a smart remark to my cashier, saying, "what are you doing? "Checking for drugs? , which I did not care as I knew he was joking. However, my cashier replied to that customer, "you know these wet backs", thinking that I would not understand her. I told the Filipino lady, I know lots of illegal Filipinos, and she immediately responded, that's not what I meant to say, giving herself away, as nothing else was said. I ran into the other customer outside and he looked embarrassed, and we said our goodbyes, as civilized people. So I went back into the store, and I spoke with a Supervisor, Tyler I believe, tall young slim African American male, who was very professional, and stated I should contact the manager in the morning.
