On with the relocation...from San Diego back to Tempe... Last time, I was at Roosevelt and University...lo those 20 years ago...where the stores and restaurants still had class, and did not feel like something cheap and crass... I'm at Baseline and Hardy this time...and gratified to find Food City because it DOES NOT FEEL like the Bashas/Frys/Albertsons (even tho Bashas owns the store...) The store is clean...I have yet to see bugs flying around produce...the butcher shop is immaculate...and there are native offerings there. The prices for many things are lower than at the bigger stores. Disparity comes apparently with those items that are not so common in a lower/middle class grocery. Because of an extremely small refrigerator and a roomie who wants 3 of the 4 shelves along with 1 of the veggie drawers, I am buying preferred produce daily on my way home from work. The folks at Food City are so much more green than the folks at Fresh and Easy...all the packaging and the clean sterile feeling at Fresh and Easy compared to the 'open the box and display the stuff' that Food City has going on...I am more confident with produce I can touch and smell to gauge the freshness/ripeness that I am looking for.... read more

I don't know what's happening with customer service this week. I'm hoping the last 2 experiences were just unfortunate incidents. We shop at Food City occasionally and we've noticed that there is no other option but to use the self checkout lines. Fine, I got it, although I'm not a fan. My husband shopped there earlier today, when a female cashier offered the customer in front of him to get checked out in her line. When she finished with him she told my husband to get back into the self check out area. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? How rude!!! Well, he told her to keep the items in the cart and left. That's a great way to lose customers, Food City! I really don't believe you can afford to. read more

My review is specifically for the deli that Food City has in the store. I was surprised that I could get 4 tacos for about $8.50, they were SUPER DELICIOUS!! I got one of each: carne asada, birria, carnitas, and grilled chicken. Sadly they were out of the Al pastor I wanted to try it. But they had many more meats to choose from for your taco filling. They also had other foods on the menu like tamales, soups, burritos, etc. I also purchased a tub of salsa from the front part of the deli and that also was great. Also the workers seemed really friendly and helped me find an aisle for something. The cashier was sweet as well and helped me pick out my food. I'll definitely come back to try some different foods on the menu. Great store, great people, and great prices!!! read more

The produce did not look good. The worst part was the hot food buffet type area yuck! Everything was dry and I assure you has been out for DAYS from looking at it. The pupusas were wrapped in plastic which I've never seen before. I didn't buy anything and the center aisles were just boxed junk like a typical grocery store. This store deserves a negative star review. The scales from the produce section are all accurate. The scales at the register are NOT accurate. I weighed 1lb of limes at the scales in the produce area, however, when I get to the register the scale there says 1.79lbs. They are really ripping off customers that purchase produce. read more

We used to shop at this store from November of 2004 through December 2013. I was there alone and had given birth to my son who has Special Needs. The ladies there took good care of me. There was a time that I was unemployed, had no food for myself and when they would see me, they would give me fruit out of their handbags. Ms. Ernestine, RIP would even give me money. Once I started working again, I would come back in. They would provide me with food before throwing it away. Miss Olga would give my son candy and kisses. They had said that the knew that we weren't okay and that they were trying to make sure that we were okay knowing that we had no family in AZ. We plan on moving back to Tempe from Minneapolis in a couple of years. We will never forgot our gang at Food City! read more

It's your typical Food City, with rock bottom prices. Produce and meat looked fresh and they had fresh nopales (So fresh they still came with spines!). Check out was no problem and my total was ridiculously cheap. read more

In full disclosure, I don't grocery shop here. When I'm here, I head straight to the bakery section. No stopping...head straight there. Why? For me, it brings back so many memories of shopping for pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) with my grandma. From the giant trays to the sweet smells that waft from the cases, I always go back to my childhood. The cases are filled with yummy, super fresh delights. My favorite are the ginger bread piggies, but I often venture out and get the pineapple empanadas, palmeras, raspberry swirl and of course the traditional conchas. Today, we also picked up a bag of their fresh bolillo rolls for $2.50. These make the best sandwiches ever and my son loves them. After paying I spied the tres leches cake. Even though I am hispanic, I have never had a piece of tres leches cake. Well today was the day. We bought a slice and OMG it was totally amazing with three layers of deliciousness. The top layer is whipped cream, the middle is soft, moist cake and the bottom is a sort of pudding/custard. It was so good, I've decided to order a cake for my mom's upcoming birthday. Take a look at the cake case and you will see that the decorators are very skilled. Cakes are very pretty and the cupcakes look like nothing I've seen in cupcake specialty stores. I need to pay more attention to the offerings at this store. I know there are bargains to be had. (Pass the sweet bread, please!) read more

So I stop to buy my vegetables & fruits on Wednesday at your store, it's convenient and close to my house, however....... buying prepared food the little restaurant is super frustrating, the older lady with little beady eyes see you walk up and runs to the back and keeps sticking her Heras out to see if the younger girls are going to help me, the girls that are there in the evening just say someone will come and help you soon, ( hoping that the older lady with wicked eyes comes back to help) but nobody does help, I stand there frustrated not saying anything just seeing how lazy all of them are and how nobody takes their customer service job seriously, that act like it's an inconvenience that they have to help people, I stand there until I get helped, after seeing me stand there for 10 minutes, and they told me something will be here to help you, but nobody comes, they come rolling their eyes and in a ghoulish tone ask "has anybody helped you" when I say no they offer help then. It seems that they do not know what their responsibilities are and how to service waiting customers, when I'm the only customer waiting in line!!!! I think from now on I will not bother them and will not ask them to buy any food items, I would not want to make them work for their pay checks, they need to be trained and be coached on how to serve the public when they are the face of food city, if they think it's beneath them, then change their position and keep them in the back cleaning toilets and not have to interact with the public, because as of now, I am just going to stop at ranch market and buy my food there, the ladies at their food court seem they are always having fun, talking and joking and being cordial and helpful to their customers, they don't seem miserable like the women at your food city. Yep I'll start buying my cooked food and fruits and vegetables at Ranch Market from now on, it's convenient on my way home. I think that one star for the restaurant, but overall 4.5 for the store itself , I just don't want to go there and have this older women and the two younger ones just pretend I'm invisible to them hoping the other will acknowledge me and help me, they play this off each other. Clean market that carries products you can't find in all grocery stores. I come for specific cuts of meat and the competitive prices.

It's Food City...not AJ's, Whole Foods, etc... Don't expect this store to be something life changing. They have great prices on all Mexican food ingredients and some really good weekly specials. The produce is always fresh. When the hatch chilies are in season they roast them fresh in front of the store. Some items like cheese and processed foods are a bit more expensive. The check out staff is friendly and it never seems really busy, so check out is fast. read more

I was buying my food, they where calling this guy that worked there on the mic. And he came inside and started talking to what looked like the manager . He looked like he had Down syndrome or autism and he said "I can't do it all buy myself" and she said very rudely to him "sorry that's your job!" I look to see who she was an I felt so bad for him . The only reason I still shop at this Food City is because it is right across the street from my apartment complex. The store itself is dirty on the outside, as well as the inside. The produce section had flies all over the fruits and vegetables. It is also nearly impossible to find a specific item unless you know exactly where to look. The shelves are very disorganized, and you will often find food in the same section as laundry detergent or office supplies. I do not recommend coming to this store unless it is your only option. read more

Always expect to wait in line for at least 10 minutes. Most people at the store shop for the produce which has to be individually keyed in. To make matters worse, there are no more than three cashiers during the busy times of the day. I was generous and giving three stars because the product is all in stock most of the time. read more

If you need a piñata - THIS is the place! The prices are lower than most other stores but their selection is catered to more cultural shoppers. You can get some great meat cuts for a Carne Asada - they also have some excellent marinated meat. Also a ton of Mexican spices and other food offerings. read more

Every time I have gone into a Food City it has smelled horribly. I will never go to another Food City again. They have the music blaring and it gives me a headache. The meat that is sold is subpar at best. Do yourself a favor and shop elsewhere! read more

I'm not a big fan if this grocery store. It's loud and usually pretty dirty. I feel like a lot of the produce is pretty bruised and damaged. The selection is limited but the prices are good. They have a nice selection of Mexican foods and spices which is really nice. Additionally I love the full sugar Mexican sodas. read more

I like how close to this store I am but the food quality is very poor. First the meat I purchased was rotting. I got home to cook it and it had a fowl odor. This was the problem with all the meat I purchased that day which was ground beef, chicken and pork. I also had issues with the food court, I bought my son a corn dog that was burnt and had attempted to get some other food that was either burnt cold or looked like it was rotting. Everything that is packaged and sealed seems to be good but the produce and meats are in poor condition the store also seems very unclean. read more
