Downloaded yelp just because this store pissed me off so much. I bought pasta from here about five days ago. I boiled it and found it was full of MAGGOTS. I check the expiration date, and it expired in MARCH. It is LATE JUNE and it was still on the shelves to be sold. Not to mention the overpriced products. I'm not going to say this place is glorious but I actually love it so much. It is so convenient and easy to go in and out unlike a big store like Fry's! It's not your typical grocery store but they have a lot of stuff! You can tell there isn't a lot of traffic flow, and I feel like they deserve more. The workers are so friendly as well. read more

I agree with "don't judge a book by its cover" conveniently located, friendly staff, ambiance is that of a small warehouse or bowling alley. I can find my Mexican spices here they have hard to find Mexican and American products top of my head are their licorice candy, Mexican chips and drinks, also salsas like Crystal Louisiana sauce. I don't usually get their hot cooked food but it's decent. I've gotten their dark red salsa it was yummy and spicy! They also have a produce section which has saved me so many times. The prices are that of a convenience store, you're not going to Frys. Read the labels sometimes stuff may expire but if you bring it up to the staff's attention they will take care of it. You see all kinds of clientele from the nice folk to "shady". Overall I like this store and recommend if you're in the neighborhood. read more

This is very much a "don't judge a book by its cover" kind of place. If you have your own bodega/corner store/neighborhood market you will understand and appreciate the value of Rollins Market. I was raised in New Mexico and I find a lot of the foods and flavors that I grew up with in this store - even the ones that aren't easy to find out in Arizona. This is my spot to get New Mexico Red Chile powder for my enchiladas. I got their green chile pork tamales today and they genuinely made me feel like I was back in Santa Fe. Don't get me wrong because I absolutely love Arizona and its food, but sometimes it's really nice to go on a nostalgia trip back to the New Mexican food I'm used to. The food from Rollins' deli counter does that for me. Aside from that, it's just a really nice and convenient spot to drop in and grab ice or a protein bar before the gym. We frequently buy their salsa and guacamole to have around the house or bring to get togethers with our friends. We've been regulars for so long that the family who owns the business recognizes us and even remembers what kind of tobacco my boyfriend buys. read more

The market that looks like an abandoned bowling alley is actually pretty great. I'm so glad this is in my neighborhood. A mega bodega with boxed and canned food, convenience store essentials, booze, ice cream - but also, a pretty interesting spice selection, chips that seem to be made in house, and A+ salsa. read more

This small grocery store is excellent. I went there this afternoon to get some of their homemade salsa verde (they have many different fresh-made salsas in the deli). I also got some Squirt for my tequila at home, and grabbed some beer. Earlier in the day my housemate went to get some of the Mexican food in the deli -- he's addicted to that food. They have fresh produce, cheese, meats, and staples like bread, cereal, soup, frozen dinners... It's very convenient for those of us who live nearby, and the people who own and work there are kind and helpful. I had a good experience in the store today, so I wanted to leave a note. read more

Rollins may not be "clean" or "fresh" or "happy" or "a store," but you know what? It's MY store and if you don't like it you can amscray! Rollins has gotten its shit together much more so in the past two years or so since the first time I visited. It used to be that their produce selection was often-times brown, deflated and covered in fruit flies. To this day, they don't have a lot of essentials like they never, ever have oranges and their apples are kinda mealy, but, fuck it, they offer most of the things that I need anyway. If I need to get fruit, Rollins is pretty much the last place on my mind... I'd rather scour alleyways in search of fruit trees sometimes. But when Rollins has something in its favor, it really works out well. Their meat selection is generally pretty inexpensive and fucking awesome. I wanted to get a pork shoulder to throw in the crockpot to make pulled pork and I asked the butcher if he had one in back and he was stoked. It seemed like no one ever asked him for special cuts, because he hopped to and gave it to me cheap-as-shit. One time I asked a dude working there if they had tongs for sale. They didn't, so he gave me his pair that he uses at the deli for free. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's a little ghetto and sometimes even a little sad, but goddamnit, this is my neighborhood store and they treat me well. They're happy to see me and they remember me when I come back. read more

I'd give it 2 1/2 stars if I could. Rollins is better than nothing, and on this side of Tempe, that's exactly what we have as alternatives--nothing. Pros: great meat department, since there is a butcher on premises, convenience, baked goods, employees are relatively friendly. Cons: wilted, withered produce, often overpriced items (not all of them, to be fair,) and some fuzzy-looking stuff in the freezer. Some of the items on the shelves look like they've been there since the Clinton administration. Still, if you're desperate, it can save you a drive. I just don't understand how it's possible for this end of Tempe to have absolutely no alternatives. read more

I have been coming here for over 20+ years now, & have seen many changes but the Owner Joe is still the same great guy from day one. Most of the staff have been here a long time & if there is ever something you need & they don't have it in stock or even if they don't carry it, they will get it for you. Fresh produce comes in weekly along with meats at the meat counter. Great deli with lots of GOOD cooked food to grab for lunch also. The Manager Adham (pronounced Adam) is one of the nicest & most helpful people you will ever meet, he is always cheerful & works very hard to keep the shelves & coolers full. Overall, I couldn't do without this lovely corner market, they are like family & the convenience, as there is not a big box grocery store for miles from here, is truly terrific. read more

I think Rollin's Market is fine. Rollin's is about 150 yards from my place of residence. If I want fancy canned goods, rare game or fruits unknown, I'll go to the appropriate market. In the meantime, Rollin's has everything I need. For my first visit, I took my son to see what they had to offer. I had read reviews of spoiled fruit and bug-laden flour. I owed it to myself to check out this market; if only for their liquor section. Their liquor section was decent. As far as Tempe goes, it's not going to compete with a downtown Circle K. There is a lot of cooler space, but imports and Taster's Choice selections are, unsurprisingly, limited. I did, however, discover tall bottles of Stella Artois for less than $3 each. Again, not a bargain, but definitely not bad for WALKING DISTANCE. BTW, beer and wine only -- they don't sell hard liquor. The wine selection is limited. $7.99 for Barefoot. You get the idea. The deli counters were unique and adventurous. The salsa is homemade and plentiful. You have no idea what you're missing. They serve breakfast all day and offer a pancakes and sausage or bacon platter for $3.99. Would you pay someone else $4 to make you pancakes and bacon? Shut up. You know you would. I took a good look at the produce. I didn't see wrinkled limes, lemons or apples. There was average-looking pineapple and cantaloupe. Surprisingly, there was a lot of produce...including stuff you wouldn't normally see. Jicama! Tomatillos! What was interesting was when I tried to leave. The guy behind the deli hopped out and asked me what I was looking for, duly noting that I had not made a purchase. The guy took a special interest in what I needed. I told him I wanted a burrito, but they were all out in the deli. He told me to wait and then made me a burrito right there on the spot. He then proceeded to mark it as 1/2 off. I can't argue with that kind of service. These people are working hard to earn their market! I tell you what... It's small. It's strange. It's unlike most stores in the west, but it's a pretty common thing in the east. Regardless, it's a cool place and it's earned my business. It's not AJ's fine foods, but it doesn't have to be. If you want organic produce, then go out and look for it. In the meantime, Rollin's has my necessities and Saturday morning breakfast covered. read more

I call this place Ghetto Mart. It smells like rancid grease and salmonella. But there have a been a few times (a few and only a few) where I needed laundry soap, or syrup or something. I would never buy produce here for any reason. Prices are expensive too. Tempe is in desperate need of a grocery store. (Fresh and Easy, are you listening!) Rollins has a great little Mexican take-out section. A very enthusiastic & friendly lady named Mayra does all the cooking of small-batch recipes from Guerrero in southwestern Mexico - essentially homemade delicacies. We had such fun discussing the various dishes, of which she was justly proud! There's a wide selection of daily-changing dishes: cocido (beef & vegetable soup); chunky pork in chile sauce; guisados (stews); pork ribs; deep fried tilapia, chicken, & chicharron; carne asada; tamales; beans & rice; red, green, & molcajete salsas; & many other attractive options. On two visits, I grabbed a portion of thick, crispy tilapia w/ salsa for a tasty parking lot snack. It was delicious, bringing back memories of P. Peñasco - I only forgot to add lime on both occasions! It just doesn't get any more authentic than this - with either the food or the chef! read more

Let me first say this: Who would have thought that Henry Rollins would have opened a Mexican-style Market in Tempe! I knew that he had given a few interviews during his Black Flag days in which he discussed at length his desire to open a chain of Mexican-style markets. Boy, am I glad he did!! Having said all that- I do feel like he can spend a LITTLE bit more time on the quality of their goods. Meats look a little on the spent side and veggies leave something to be desired. Maria sells handpies that will knock your socks off. I recommend the apple ones. **Do not use their restrooms** In summary, I'll be trying to go to Rollins Market at least twice a day, everyday because (A) I love it there and (B) I'm hoping to catch Mr. Rollins!!!!! read more

After the sad moving, then closing, of the local co-op, carless me tried to make do with my local market. Unfortunately, the relationship just isn't working. There's nothing wrong with offering cheap groceries, but you want some degree of quality as well. Rollins seems to consistently sell whatever is the cheapest version of whatever item your looking for. While that may be just fine to augment other goods bought elsewhere, it is impossible to get a good supply of food from it. Anything slightly out of the mainstream can not be found here. Maybe I'm just spoiled after years of the co-op and Whole Foods, but as much as I love cooking, eating out is now the only option due to the poor selection over at Rollins. read more

Ok so yeah I almost got hit by a lady on a Jazzy when I posted my original review but I did go back. I was weary not only because of that but also because I had heard they were much more expensive than other stores, however, today I did a price compare and while the selection is smaller at Rollins, the prices are better than a chain store and they had everything I needed. They also recently made some upgrades to the entry of the store making it look cleaner. Some of the frozen food and packaged stuff is pricier but not by a ton. Their fresh made salsa is awesome (the tomatillo is my favorite) and the Mexican sweet breads are great. One thing that might be holding this place back is, it doesn't really appear to be a grocery store upon entry. Looks more like you can buy stuff for your house there and all groceries are towards the back. Some reorganization might help and a few additional small renovations (like how they re did the front) would make this place 5 stars. Original review: An old lady on a Rascal scooter hit a man at full speed inside Rollins, missing me by less than an inch. He got stuck on the front of it and was flailing around in confusion. Thankfully the front door of the store was open, otherwise the guy would have gotten smashed. According to the cashier, this happens on the regular. The guy walked away in shock.. I couldn't agree more with the previous 5 or so reviews. This side of town desperately needs a better grocery store. Yes, Rollins is too expensive, their selection is weak, and their produce is gross most of the time. However, I can't count the number of times when I needed something random like laundry detergent or cough drops and good ole' Rollins Market is right there to give me what I need. The hours are good and the people that work there are always pretty friendly. They also have some authentic Mexican food stuffs if that is what you are looking for. Though I wish there was something better nearby, I will still continue to visit Rollins about once a month for 1 or 2 things. read more

Has everything I would need, less than 200 yards from home. Prices are reasonable, and some of their premise food items are to die for. Try the guacamole, carne asada, and marinated chicken. You know this place will get the job done if you need something to eat and it's close but I'd say it's far from ideal as a place to shop. Produce was dismal at a first glance, and the closer I got the worse it was, with a highlight being some squash with a hole in it from going bad. Also a nice fly accompanied on my way through the majority of the store. If you need dry goods this place has some, but I'd steer away from anything fresh just out of an abundance of caution. read more

Okay, just so you know, this is an update on my prior review and though I'm not yet changing the review status, I noticed that the owner of the grocery store is starting to spruce things up a bit. The store feels cleaner and I'm noticing a better selection of items and best of all, it is close and accordingly, for small items, I still shop here. It is not my primary grocery source (Sunflower Market on Southern and McClintock gets most of that business) but for staple items, I do stop in here. The meat selection is still one of the best deals in town and I hope the store continues to evolve and capture more of the new and emerging business in the area. I guess I have to agree with Billy R's review, its "MY" local store so it has a warm fuzzy place in my heart and I'd rather have it there than not have it and I look forward to doing a future review and moving up my evaluation. read more

A little family owned market that's been around for over 10 years. Everything is pricey, but that's what you pay when you need something quick and not too far. I usually get the rotisserie chicken or the hot wings there. The rotisserie chicken can sometimes be too salty, just depends which cook is cooking that day. The hot wings are decent, falls right off the bone, but could use more flavors. read more

My husband and I both lived near here at different times while attending ASU. Is it kind of dirty? Yes. Is the produce occasionally really obviously NOT ok? Yes. But the REALLY legit Mexican cheese, tortillas, marinated meats and extensive hot sauce assortment makes up for it. The corner market feel is still warm and welcoming even though it's not the cleanest place around. The best thing about being a broke college student in Arizona is the accessibility and affordability of Mexican food and ingredients. Rollins kept us pretty happy for some time. read more

The low selection at Rollins doesn't bother me terribly. They have interesting-looking pastries, and are one of the maybe three places in my neighborhood within walking distance that have groceries. However, when I went there for flour, every bag I inspected had bugs crawling in and out of it. I'd not recommend trusting this place with much, honestly. read more

I was reading the reviews and couldn't believe we were talking about the same place, but then when I checked the ones that had been filtered out, I found that people do actually like Rollins. Anyway, here is my original review: Wow, what a difference lately! I've been shopping at Rollins for about 10 years now, and the improvements in the past 6 months or so have been incredible! I've always appreciated Rollins for its extremely convenient location, but it has never had the selection of a large chain grocery. While some of their prices are a bit high (usually on prepackaged items and canned food), they also have some great deals. Every day prices include: 99 cent large avacados 49 cent/lb red onions all fresh chiles 69 cents/lb apples 99 cents/lb cucumbers 2 for $1 Fresh herbs 99 cents per box for basil, thyme, oregano, mint, & more One dozen large eggs $1.99 or 18 pack for $2.69 Naked Juice smoothies $2.69 1 lb jar of raw honey $4.89 Plus, they have fresh baked goods, beer ($9.99 for 12pack budwiser) & wine, a huge meat and seafood dept, and deli offerings including whole roasted chickens (fresh cooked on the rotisserie daily) for $6.99 each. The owner, Joe is very nice was responsive when I asked him about carrying new products. He said he is very willing to order new products when people request them, you just have to ask. They've even expanded their products to include local, organic, gluten free and vegan options. I've been going to Rollins for ten years and every year it just gets better. I think most of these reviews are completely unfair. Joe and Jim (the owners) are great people. Rosa and Isaac are wonderful cooks. I go there every day... happily. I haven't been to Fry's in years. If you haven't been to Rollins lately... well you are missing out on a great local mom and pop store. When is the last time you walked into a store and the clerk said " Hi Tom, how are you... how's your mom?" For the record there is nothing wrong with any of the food... period. As for the vegetables... some are in season and some aren't. It's a local market; the vegetables aren't chemically enhanced and then waxed. They are just seasonally great... normal vegetables. Wow i wasnt expecting to find Rollings Market here. Well all though many people dont consider Rollings Market as a nice place but is still very indispensable, you can find almost anyhting. But the great thing about it is that it gave me a job. Yes, i used work there as a cashier. And Im really greatfull because it helped me to earn some money to go to college. Rollins is a great place for shopping in the neighborhood. The owners are great and the butcher is awesome! He will cut you what ever you want and is big as you want it, and will give you a great price. The girls at the front counter are sweethearts as well. The lady behind the deli makes great chorizo and eggs, and fried chicken. Not to mention their potato salad. So if you live in the neighborhood, make sure you stop at your friendly local market! read more

Twice in the past month I have had purchased spoiled cheese and now a gallon of milk. While the manager has made good on his promise to reimburse me, it is quite distressing to go to the length of having to return to the store and purchase more items that are inferior. Milk and cheese are not inexpensive items and for me to have to walk back to the store to be reimbursed, I have discovered after purchasing spoiled milk, I no longer want to shop at Rollins. Yes, I called again to let the manager know of the spoiled merchandise, and his response was, throw the milk away, come back to the store and I will buy you fresh milk. Well, needless to say, while he may purchase 'fresh' milk for me, I again say, I am NOT returning to Rollins ever again. I thought about buying some hamburger one time, but decided after we'd bought the cheese and found it to be quite funky, I looked at the thermometer in the meat section and discovered that the temperature was reading near the spoilage mark on it and changed my mind about purchasing meat or cheese from that section of the so-called refrigerated section again. I refuse to pay the higher price for name-brand cheese when I can go to a chain grocery store and get it on sale. I am very disappointed with my corner grocery store and am sad to say I will not return. read more

I've been shopping at Rollins for four years and haven't seen anything you've mentioned. In the last couple years they have really improved and the new meat counter, pastries and deli are great! I have never seen bugs in the produce or flour and the staff is the friendliest I've ever met. I do go to the big guys once in awhile because Rollins doesn't have everything I need but I always come back because of the staff. read more
