I had been wanting to try this place for a while, since my grandmother was from Sonora, I thought the food would be similar to how she made things growing up. I ordered Chorizo and there was only one style "Beef and Pork" - no mention whether Hot, Mild, or Medium. It was actually pretty mild for my taste. It wasn't bad, just unspectacular. The only other local Chorizo I found that really stood out was "Bill's Market" in Tempe and unfortunately they retired. The service however is what really stood out. Poor. I was not greeted when I came in. I stood around waiting for the cashier to come ring me up and she seemed a little huffy and rude. She looked at me and said in Spanish "Well, what?" I showed her my bag of Chorizo, and she sort of aggressively ordered me to put it on the other side of register where I was standing. You can buy almost any Mexican grocery item, and the meat case is more beautiful than any big name grocery store. The perfect one stop shop for your taco night. We decided to make tacos de pastor for the very first time tonight and I'm so glad we stopped here for our ingredients. The pastor meat was bomb! It was such good quality meat. We also picked up produce for all the taco fixings (avocado, cilantro, limes, onion, serranos), also all great quality. I LOVE Carnicería Sonora! Ever since someone recommended this little gem, it's the only place I go to get all the ingredients for a carne asada. They have a great variety of meats, spices, and snacks. My favorite thing about this carnicería is how you automatically feel like you're in a different country when you walk in. I love how the piñatas hang from the ceiling and most of the staff is bilingual. They should know. I only get corn tortillas and never get flowers for they gave me more stuff for the same amount of money that I will not consume. They wasted my time my money and I had to go get food from somewhere else to eat because my family was extremely hungry. Their attitude that lacks professionalism and lacks customer service was unacceptable. I hope nobody ever has to go through that experience again. This carniceria has been a location that my whole family and myself have gone for 20+ years and today we will no longer be returning for bad customer service. We would buy their meats and many products but I mainly would pass by to get long distant call cards for my mother. My mother then mention a few days later that those cards never had any credit (each cost $5) and recommended to return to the store to get them activated. We passed by today and were told that they no longer have those cards available and that wasn't a problem so I proceeded to ask for my refund of $10. The worker then ask if we had receipt and we mention that we don't have a receipt because none is given ever. They then recalled and agreed that we were right and that she would go talk to the manager. The manager never came forward to talk to us and the worker came back to tell us that they couldn't do anything or give us a refund. This is highly unprofessional of them when the location is at fault for not giving receipt and continue selling a product they no longer have available. Most of the workers speak Spanish only so another customer helped me order. I got my food and ask what appears to be the manager if I could get hot salsa he says yes they will get it for you. While I'm doing so another Mexican customer makes the same request. So they give her the salsa first and the guy gets sidetracked so he ask his co worker to make one more hot salsa for to which she scowls at him then me but I didn't think much of it. Until she brings me the 1oz cup of salsa and says this will be 2$. I was like no he just gave her 2 cups and she was not charged for it. She lies and says he did charge her. I said fine. I'll give you the mild salsa back and keep the hot she says no because it hot you have to pay and mild is the only one that's free and I'm like no I'm not paying because she didn't pay and she got 2 cups no problem. She then says okay fine this one time you can have it for free. And she know I'm not believing her. So as I'm checking out I ask manager is there an extra charge for salsa he says no salsa is free and she runs up from behind me from kitchen speaking in Spanish, reiterating what she told me and he looks confused like she saying it was a special salsa and I say no it's just hot. It's like she knew she was guilty and trying hard to make me believe she was not trying to take advantage of me by adding a charge on an item that is normally free. I ensured him she did not charge the other woman and he just kept apologizing saying I'm sorry ma'am why would he be apologizing if the salsa legitimately cost 2$. I have never had and racist experience in any Mexican store I've been it but I am convince she did this because of my skin color. Morally she was flat out wrong attempting to charge 2$ for 1oz salsa. That my friends is what you get when you marry Mexican. So we pulled up on Saturday AM to the small market that had a nice clean butcher block with LOTS of selection. We picked up some Carne Rachera and some Pechuga, that's chicken breast folks. Some beer, which they had all the standards, Bud light, Pacifico's Coronas and my personal fave Tecate. Let me tell you the carne asada was juicy and so was the chicken breast. Delicious and full of flavor! They do a nice job their and their meat is good quality. Also, their Guacamole was to die for! After talking to one of the employees, I found out that they make their own masa (corn tortilla dough) from scratch. Pretty awesome. The meat is normally a little overpriced so I will only get it if I see a sale going on.
