I'll be honest, this place wasn't even on my radar. We have a second home out here and spend part of the year in Phoenix, but I had somehow never heard of Hobe Meats. I only ended up here because I've been on a bit of a backyard cooking kick lately. We've got a full outdoor kitchen and smoker, and today we're hosting a crowd, so I figured I'd go hunt down a solid brisket. That quick errand turned into something else entirely. Walked in and immediately knew I wasn't in a typical grocery store meat section. The selection is on another level. I went in with tunnel vision for brisket and walked out with a beautiful cut, plus a leg of lamb and a few Wagyu steaks that I absolutely did not plan on buying. No regrets. The quality speaks for itself. Everything looked fresh, well-cut, and handled by people who clearly know what they're doing. Not just tossing meat in a case and calling it a day. There were also some more unique options that caught my eye, the kind of stuff you don't usually see unless you're really looking for it. Definitely gave me a few ideas for future weekends. What really stuck with me though was the staff. Genuinely friendly, easy to talk to, and helpful without hovering. I asked a couple questions and got real answers, not some rehearsed script. You can tell they take pride in what they're selling. If you're into cooking, especially if you've got a smoker and like experimenting a bit, this place is dangerous in the best way. I love this spot. They use their own protein so everything is fairly fresh. You can come here for your bbq or come by for lunch for a nice hearty sandwhich. I love their lunch specials. I used to sneak in here just to buy sodas because it was close but once I had their food I was in trouble. Our regular butcher is in Wickenburg but we needed some beef and didn't have time to make the drive out so we searched up and ended up at Hobe. Parking wasn't an issue and we were immediately welcomed in and helped. They offer fresh beef, chicken, pork, sausages, etc. they have a TON of options! They also have freezers full of specialty items as well. We got a few top sirloin and filet mignon. Prices are great and quality was amazing. While there we saw a deli to the left so we grabbed a few Saturday special cheeseburgers and Turkey sandwich. Everything tasted great and fresh! I went on recommendation from a friend because of their more "rare meat" selection, and I did find some of what I was looking for which was great. In particular I was trying to find pheasant, elk, venison, buffalo and perch, which they all had! Also discovered a few seafood options there too, which was so great. They had a freezer section along the back wall and a whole meats section on the other side. Nice retail space with other items to help you prepare an incredible bbq. Along with charcoals, sauces, woods with flavors.... Really nice. I was greeted upon entering and asked twice if I needed help as I browsed. Not a lot of chatter from the cordial gentleman but I wouldn't have minded hearing anything about the meats, the location, the sourcing. I didn't ask but would love to knowledge. It is connected next door to another business which was cool, you could just walk in over there. All in all I bought some venison, veal, a tuna steak and elk. Located NW side of 16th Street & Bethany Home Road which became the areas ever popular and trendy eatery intersection. Land Marks include Lucy's marketplace Dick's Hideaway, George Yang's Chinese Cuisine. Hobe's is nestled among them and was my butcher shop for 30 years. Great personal service you don't find in a grocery store. Hobe Meat was my choice for Ribeye steaks, Hamburger and Ribs. We loved the weekly BBQ service out front that served great burgers fresh from the grill. We used to have a Bashas Grocery store just south of Bethany but its Butcher shop wasn't near the quality of meat or cuts that Hobe Meats offered. So glad to see them still going strong! Just discovered Hobe meats due to not being able to find lamb stew meat. Called about 1/2 dozen butcher shops and none had it. Until, we got to Hobe. They were very friendly and had exactly what we needed. Drove 20 miles and found a gem of a butcher shop and deli. Got the lamb cut into stew pieces and the sandwiches were incredible. Great meat, not great service. We had multiple bad experiences over the holiday that left me and several family members not wanting to go back. I had called about purchasing a gift card and the person I spoke to was super abrupt and rushed me off the phone. I literally had no interest in going there after that so sent my father in law who wanted to buy some meat anyways. He told me after that he had the same exact experience in the shop where basically it was "what do you want" type service. My mom went there to get a gift card and a sandwich- same exact thing. It's obviously not a one off and I'd recommend they work on being more pleasant to do business with, it matters a lot. read more

Moved into the area a couple months ago and first visited this spot in late June. The guys behind the counter were cool, got a sirloin and some bacon. Both came out great when I cooked them. I'm mostly rating on the first visit, because I just went back for a potential 2nd visit and was incredibly bummed/disappointed that 20 minutes before closing, I walked into the cases being 90% emptied which I have to assume meant they started pulling the meat out the cases at least 30 minutes before they close. As someone who works until 5:30 (and only down the street) it's a gigantic bummer that I can't stop by real fast, grab a couple pieces of meat and then keep heading home. So I guess if I ever go back, it has to be weekends only. It's worth a visit for others as they do have quality meats at affordable prices, but I'm just bummed that I had to change my dinner plans tonight when I thought I'd be slow grilling a great cut of meat. read more

I've been doing business with Hobe Meats for over 40 years. The service has always been top notch-helpful and friendly and the meats high quality. Today we were treated rudely. We realize the day before Christmas is probably the busiest day of the year. The butcher shop was very busy. We don't think that is an excuse for the butcher to be rude. When the guy brought out our 2 pound prime beef tenderloin that we ordered over a week ago, he just placed it on the counter behind the cashier and walked away. We asked if that was ours and the cashier looked at it to determine it had a sticky note with our name on it. I looked at it and it weighed 2.86 pounds. We had to practically yell at the guy, as he quickly walked away, to confirm that it was indeed our filet. When we pointed out to him that it was over the weight we had requested he said that's all they had and then rudely turned and walked away. Truthfully, we would have been okay to buy almost 50% more than we ordered if not for that guy's attitude. Not even a thank you.... Henceforth, we will think long and hard before we subject ourselves to this kind of treatment again.. especially on Christmas Eve! read more

I tried this place for lunch. For $10, I got a pulled pork sandwich, side, and a drink. I thought that was a great deal. The pulled pork sandwich did not have any coleslaw, which I'm used to having on pulled pork sandwiches. It was still very good. I had their pasta salad as my side, which was good. The deli wasn't busy, and I got my food pretty quickly. There is some seating if you want to eat there. I would recommend this place for a quick lunch that's reasonably priced and quick. read more

My only complaint is anyone giving them less than 5 stars on this app. This place is close to my house. I'm shopping there at least twice weekly. I'm always coming from work, and am partially brain dead from the day. They are extremely patient with me. The quality of the products are nothing less than stellar. They never grab the first cut closest to their hand. They always reach for the best cut in the case, without me having to ask for it. When I inquire about a certain animal or cut, the clerk gives an honest and economical opinion. I value that,tremendously. I gotta start getting their names, but the ENTIRE STAFF is GREAT. Lastly and almost, most importantly...the cleanliness of this establishment. It's incomparable to any business in this little hood. Not a speck of dust or a frond of anything on the floor. Greeted by Andrea behind the counter. Told her I was a first timer! She was so nice. I ordered my food. The Biltmore and the Dreamy Draw. Both very similar. I've with Potato salad and one with Jalapeño Mac and cheese. She said you also get 2 drinks. What? $12. That is crazy. Handed me a ticket. Went next door to pay. Looked around at the butcher area. Just picked up a pound of their smoked brisket. I was surprised when I came by to pick up and it was in a zip lock bag, cold. In hindsight, I should have realized that they are a deli, not an actual BBQ joint or BBQ restaurant. So I can definitely forgive that aspect for sure and cannot hold it against them in any way. The presentation just left a little bit to be desired. Anywho, as any meat connoisseur knows, its about the quality and taste of the meat that really counts. Drove right home and pop 2 large slices onto the indoor grill and proceeded to get out the fixings to make a sandwich. Thank goodness I had some good quality bbq sauce laying around because it lacked flavor and seasoning. You can slightly taste the hint of the smoked aspect of this "smoked brisket" but overall they left a lot on the table here. Leaned on the bland side more so than flavored, seasoned, or smoked. Overall, I will definitely continue to come here for lunch for their sandwich combos because their sandwich menu and how they serve their meats in conjunction with their sides, add-ons, house available sauces (such as their awesome horseradish) really make them shine brighter. But overall, on its own, I do not recommend buying their smoked brisket by the pound. read more

Absolutely love Hobe Meats! I started smoking a few years ago and everything from waygu briskets to tri-tips and beyond are here. I'll be making a beautiful rack of ribs tomorrow and my dogs will be enjoying their regular treat; frozen femur bones! Prime, waygu, dry aged steaks!? Definitely. Hobe Meats is a full service butcher shop with an adjacent deli. My coworkers and I stopped in for lunch one day and were very impressed with their menu of sandwiches using fresh cut meats and cheeses. It's a small deli and there's a small dining room with a handful of tables that can accommodate up to 4 people. Service is quick and lunch was fresh, delicious and IMHO reasonably priced. I later stopped in to pick up a ham to smoke for new years day. They had three different brands of whole ham, both cured and uncured, so very impressed with selection. Also you want a cut of beef, you name it they have all the freshly butchered stuff you could imagine. they had a number of different types of wild game as well! I was further pleasantly surprised to find that they have several whole and breast only turkey options, both frozen and fresh. This is great to know as I always seem to end up at the grocery store at the last minute looking for fresh (not frozen) turkey to smoke on Thanksgiving day and can't ever find it. So good to know they have fresh turkeys at Hobe. Highly recommend checking them out if you're in the area, either for a tasty lunch or to pick up some beef, pork, chicken or wild game to take home! read more

We only have so much time on God's green earth, so to think I am about to spend any of it writing a review about a butcher/deli... I only hope this saves someone else, even if its just letting the owner know what's up so they can turn things around. At the deli counter, I asked for prosciutto. I could see it there, in the case. Boar's Head prosciutto. I asked that it be sliced thin. Without saying anything, they handed me a package of Boar's Head prosciutto. You know, the plastic-covered tray one that you can get at any grocery store. I said, no, I want the fresh sliced... the response from the two deli ladies was that they couldn't slice it thin, so if I wanted it thin I would have to buy the package. I drove all the way out here, so I said -- just slice me up some fresh, please. I didn't worry too much about how thin it was going to be, I'm from NY, I just want some prosciut, whatever if it isn't as thin as I like? The woman was so rude to me, I felt uncomfortable and began looking over my shoulder/around to see if this was a prank, or if anyone could overhear (because I was so embarrassed)! It was made clear that slicing this prosciutto was not something that either of them wanted to do. I felt bad? I also got a 1/4 lb of salamis... two different kinds. It took FOREVER. I spent at least ten minutes at the counter, waiting. My cold cuts were wrapped in paper but then in a ziploc bag. Like, one that says "ZIPLOC" on it. From the grocery store. I'm starting to wonder why I did not just go to a grocery store??? Rudest encounter I ever had with a service person, so bad that I told two people about it just to see if anything similar had ever happened to them. I wasn't going to leave a review, but I'm home now and I opened the cold cuts and... I don't get it. First of all, they were not kidding. They cannot slice prosciut thin, but they also cannot slice anything thin. Do you know the Oscar Meyer bologna you can buy at the grocery store? Put four of those slices together. That's the thickness I'm talking about. I couldn't even fold it or roll it for my antipasto platter. It's a straight up slab of meat. All of them! Unless, in the case of one salami, they are so thinly sliced there are only shavings. Which also cannot be used on an antipasto platter. I don't understand, how is this place a deli? How can they put 1/3 inch thick meat on sandwiches? Who is buying this? Is there anyone who can slice the meats better? If so, where are they? Why are they selling pre-packaged deli meats straight from the manufacturer at a deli? Not least of all, why are the deli girls so mean? Why don't they want to help me? Why did they make me feel bad for asking them? Why were they so slow, and angry? Was it deliberate? Did I do something to upset them? I also bought steaks, and my total came to over $100. I wish I had spent my hard-earned money elsewhere. I won't be back, and these cold cuts are going into the trash or some recipe I can try and think up. WHAT A WASTE. read more

This is one of those four star reviews with a one star narrative. I stopped going to Hobe's. The running joke in our house and amongst people we know is that they left the rotten between Hobe and Meats. When we drive by, our little girl says 'Look daddy! Hobe's Rotten Meats!'. Not good. We've thrown more meat away from this place than we probably have in our entire lives. Opening up a cryo and hoping what you find doesn't smell rancid is 50/50. Probably worse. I get that some products, like pork, can have an odor when coming out of cryo, but not chicken or beef and not this bad or this often. Yes, we can take it back, and yes they'll care and try to make it right, and we have, sometimes, but we don't want to deal with that. Last halloween, I had 2 hours to get some chicken on the smoker. I opened it up and it smelled like death. Threw it away and ran to Whole Foods. That affected our whole dinner. That's not what I want to deal with. The owner is super cool and wants to do the right thing, but I think their inventory model prioritizes waste avoidance over quality. They hang on to their meat too long as they rely on cryo-packs and refrigeration to extend shelf life. It's a shame, because their prices are reasonable and they have a great selection. I just can't open another bad pack of meat. I wish them the best and hope they're able to improve. read more

We have driven by this cute little deli hundreds of times and today we decided to make a stop for lunch. This place is full of a wide variety of meats and cheeses and delicatessen style options. The friendly staff welcomed us as soon as we entered. We each ordered the beef brisket sandwich, only $10 and it comes with a side and drink. My boyfriend opted out of the chipotle Mayo, while I ordered as is. He chose fries as a side and I chose the bacon Mac and cheese to share with our little one. Here's where I was fist disappointed.... the sides are in a refrigerator case and all but the Mac and cheese looked wilted and as if they had been in there for days. The lettuce blend looked limp and very unappealing along with the pasta salad options they had. Our sandwiches took less than 5 min to prepare. They have a set area to add onions, tomatoes, pickles, jalapeños and sauces. Cute bar stool tables and I was pleased they did have a high chair for our little. Our sandwiches were loaded with meat and cheese, tasty and juicy, a little too juicy. The bottom bun was very soggy and grease was dripping out of my sandwich. I ended up opting for a fork and knife to slice and take bites of my sandwich. The fries were delish and peppered, which we love. So disappointed on this visit. We loved the beef jerky from here. It had been a little while and we stopped in looking forward to having some more. I am not sure about this place. I went last week for lunch. The staff is so incredibly nice and accommodating. They really made it a wonderful experience to dine there. That being said, the two sandwiches we got from the deli were not good. Both were not fresh. The meats, both chicken and tri tip were dry. Also there was aspects of the meat that were ice cold, and others parts that were warm. These two things, the dry meat with spots of coldness, made me feel like we got a microwaved meats that were made earlier this week. For that reason, I decided I won't go back here to have a deli sandwich. I didn't try their freshly butchered meats to cook at home. I may in the future try that because the staff was overall really nice but I wouldn't recommend their deli sandwiches at all. read more

Great news everyone, this place, Hobe meats @ 16th street and Bethany home, has the absolute worst customer service and most rotten meat in the valley! If you like to jam pack your mouth with days upon days of food poising, then this is the place for you. Mmmmmm, I love the taste of my own vomit and smell of my liquid ass juice at the same time. What a joy! I bought these, 31.00 a piece steaks, 15 hours ago and they stunk my whole house up like I had a year old body stuffed in my closet. Rotten and brown! Yummmmm. We've been going there some a few years as we think their beef and pork products are quite good. We also enjoy their homemade sausages. I recently stopped in to get my granddaughter some Elk tenderloins. The girl working was amazing! Very nice, polite and professional. She told me that they also have Elk jerky. TL:DR - Great selection of meats. Great service. Sandwich was maybe one of the best I've ever had. Get the Dreamy Draw if it sounds like something you'd like. It really delivers on everything! ------------------------------------------------------------- Came in here to procure some wagyu. It was the closest aside from Arcadia meats which we went to first. But Hobe has a good number of ribeye and strip steak cuts of Wagyu and loads of other great cuts. Everyone in here was super nice, friendly, and knowledgeable. This place definitely felt a little more down to earth than Arcadia meats which felt a little more pretentious. But given that we just came in around lunch time we decided to stop by the deli side to grab a quick sandwich. And oh my, this was the best sandwich I've ever had. I'm not sure if it was because I was hungry, and I don't really know how you can improve on bread and meat. But this was amazing. I got the dreamy draw and will never get anything else. Just everything in this sandwich works perfectly from the brisket, to the horseradish cream (more cream than horseradish), to the onion jam, to the pretzel bun. Unbelievable. read more
