It finally opened! About a year ago was the first time I saw a posting about an Atlanta noodle dumpling place opening in Homewood. Well they finally opened late last month and I finally made it there. As mentioned this is the brian child of creators of Urban Hai in midtown Atlanta. Urban Hai has a Yelp rating of 4.4 with 315 reviews. That's a solid rating. I actually tried to hit Foo Hai a week before for lunch but for some reason they were closed that day. This time we also tried going for lunch and they were open! Located on the corner of 29th Ave South and 19th Street South, one of my complaints is the parking. Parking is definitely a challenge, but there is a public lot about 2 blocks away. This time I was lucky to find a spot on the street right out front. Looks are deceiving as it's much larger inside. The decor is contemporary, inviting and on this bright sunny weekday and their large open windows, there was ample light to brighten the restaurant. It was a slow lunch crowd and we were seated immediately at a small table near the windows. Their menu is large and varied with sections for Rice & Noodles, Duck Dishes, Apps, Soup, Vegetarian, Meat Dishes, Desserts, and Small Plates. There's a short Lunch Menu as well. If you didn't get it, be sure to ask for the smaller (separately printed) Foo Hai Chef Selections menu! I don't know why they don't just include those dishes on their main menu. I wanted to try everything, but this gave me reasons to return. Pan fried pork dumplings: Six pieces perfectly flash fried, served with sauces... yom yom yom Garlic Cucumber Salad: fresh chunks of cucumber served coated with a light ginger vinegar dressing... yom yom yom yom Tammy tried the Spicy Numbing Fish Claypot off the lunch menu: Fish fillets simmered and served in a claypot with sichuan peppercorns, bean sprouts... the flavor was bold and so good! Oh and it had a nice kick. It would've been perfect with some fragrant jasmine steamed rice. Yom Yom Yom Yom. I tried the Seafood Noodle soup off the Chef's Selection menu. Beautiful presentation. It was easy to tell that the noodles were homemade. The red soup was spicy yet full of flavor. There were shrimp, mussels, squid, some broccoli... Yom Yom Yom Yom! I know it was lunch and I would rather gauge my review on a dinner service, but our server was very attentive and answered any questions that we had. All the staff were very friendly and I can't wait to return and try all the other dishes. Hope I can find some decent parking. read more

I am giving Foo Hai four stars because the service was good and they had not been opened even a month when we visited, but unfortunately the cooks deserve three stars. When we arrived, there were several people waiting inside and outside. I was glad that we were able to put our names down and they would text us when our table was ready. This gave us time to grab some drinks somewhere else. We received our text, went back to the restaurant and were sat immediately at a two top by the window. Our server came over and we ordered the pork fried dumplings. They were amazing. Hand made, fresh and perfectly fried not to crispy. The sauces were also really good. The problems came with the main entrees. I ordered the Kung Pao shrimp which is known to come with peanuts. It even says it on the menu.The kitchen forgot the peanuts!! Our waiter brought out a side of peanuts which was nice, but it would have been better if the peanuts had been cooked in the meal. My husband ordered the Schezuan Peppers with beef. The bad thing was they added cilantro which my husband hates, and it didn't say on the menu that the dish came with cilantro. The waiter was very apologetic about both mistakes and explained that the kitchen staff was trying to learn the recipes. He also said he appreciated the feedback because that is the information they need to know so they can approve. He was very nice, and we promised we would come back and try it again. read more

The food was really good. I enjoyed everything that I ordered, especially the dumplings. The restaurant was decorated very well and looked very modern. However, I could not give this restaurant 5 stars because the service was poor. I was dining alone and asked for a table. The hostess said that the only seating that was available was at the bar. After explaining that I felt uncomfortable at the bar, I asked how long would the wait be for a table? She replied "I don't know, a long time". I felt like this reply was dismissive. I ultimately was able to sit at a table. After being seated at the table, I had to wait for a while for someone to simply offer me water. My order was eventually taken, but I did not see my server again until she brought the bill. I felt like I had to ask for everything that I needed, such as a to go box and a beverage refill, while she was at the table since I was receiving very little attention. I noticed that another table had to get someone's attention just so they could simply pay their bill. I also noticed that other tables were getting a significant amount of attention but they failed to provide me with the basic attention that comes with food service. If the service was better, I would've rated this restaurant 5 stars. read more

So....just to be honest, the ONE Item we tried really was 3 stars, but I plan to go back to try some more dishes, so this is like a placeholder I guess with 4 stars for now as the employee was nice and the menu has potential. So we came on Thursday night and there was a wait of 30+ minutes. Instead of waiting (too many choices out there to wait lol), we decided to order one thing that's easy to eat to go and try it out first. So we ordered the Peking Duck Roll to go (by the way, the Peking Duck Wrap is the bun). We waited about 15 minutes for it, which is what we were quoted. We went outside, walked two minutes to the nearby fountain, and tried the rolls out. They were.....okay. Nothing to write home about, but not bad either. The signature feature of authentic Peking duck is its exceptionally crisp, thin, glossy mahogany skin with succulent, tender meat underneath. Hmmm....yeah, no, this was not that. There also wasn't much meat in it...the one we took a picture of inside had more than the others, and it's limited. Also, be mindful the sauce is very salty. Luckily we ordered it on the side since we read another review that showed the sauce all over the wrap and how it was overpowering. Anyway, again, not particularly great or terrible, squarely 3 stars. Also, there was nothing in the to go bag other than the order - no utensils, no napkins, no nothing. Why I am coming back? Well, they didn't name themselves Foo Hai Peking Duck Restaurant. It's called Foo Hai Handmade Noodles and Dumplings. So have to give the noodles and dumplings a chance to really judge. Also, I did see some authentic dishes listed and need to give those a try as well. So, yes, we will be back once the hype does down to give it a real chance! read more

We are so lucky to have this restaurant. Grandma's noodles had just the right thickness and bite. My lips are still tingling from the side sauces. The "sichuan spicy noodle" has a fiery sauce that is very well-balanced with heat, salty, and nuanced flavors. I got sauce on the side and we could adjust the sauce. Love the Pan-Fried Pork Dumpling wrapper. I wouldn't mind a little more flavor in the filling. I think the side sauce we got was a black vinegar dipping sauce. Super excited for an authentic Chinese restaurant opening up in bhm as someone who grew up on Chinese food. Got the peking duck, soup dumplings and stir fried green beans as wanted so see how authentic they were. I was pleasantly surprised with the peking duck but the soup dumplings and green beans more underwhelming than expected. The peking duck was quite tender and crispy which is key. However the soup dumpling skin was too thick and green beans weren't as crispy as I wanted. Overall 4.5 stars but rounded them up to 5. I would try some other items but I think they are trying to be accommodating to too broad of an audience read more

A highly anticipated opening in Homewood! This Chinese eatery is from the same creators of Urban Hai in Atlanta (while I haven't been, I've heard great things). I had high hopes that, unfortunately, didn't get met on this visit. Don't get me wrong, the food is good, but just that. The inside is clean and chic, with their restaurant attached to a hotel lobby. Everything we ordered: -Wonton Soup -Bang bang shrimp -Chicken pan-fried dumplings - Three-pepper chicken with "fried" rice The three-pepper chicken was pretty spicy, but I enjoyed the kick. This wasn't the dish I was looking to order, but the server told me no protein substitutions could be made to the other dishes I wanted to try. I never want to be difficult when ordering, but I feel like I wasn't making a large request. For an extra $2, you could upgrade white rice for fried rice. Instead, I was served chewy brown rice that was slightly disappointing. I would've stuck to the white and saved the two bucks, but maybe that WAS fried rice? The wonton soup may have been the best $3 offering on the menu. I would absolutely order that again. My friend, who ordered the dumplings and shrimp, enjoyed her meal but agreed that something was lacking. She let me try a dumpling, which was very good! While I was underwhelmed by this experience, I would not write off this restaurant entirely. They are new and likely still working out kinks in the system. Foo Hai just opened up last week next to the Aloft Hotels in Homewood. I always like being one of the first to try a new restaurant. I had lunch here with fellow Yelp Elite Natalie F. this week. I like that they offered both very authentic Chinese cuisine here a well as some more Americanized dishes so that everyone can find something here to enjoy. I will admit I did not know what a lot of the dishes were on the more authentic menu but knew I wanted to try their duck in some form so I ordered the duck wraps. The wraps are okay, but just not quite as tender and succulent as I know roasted duck can be. I also did not enjoy the Hoisin sauce on top as I felt it overpowered the wraps. None of their lunch specials appealed to me, so I went with the Beef Lo Mein as my main entree. I love that it came with tongs which was perfect for sharing. I enjoyed it, but do wish the dish came with more beef. There were only a few small pieces of beef on the whole plate. I tried some of Natalie's spicy beef dish and liked it more than the dishes I chose. Overall I hope they do well in this area. This new restaurant in Homewood offers a fabulous and intriguing menu, with a wide variety of authentic Chinese dishes that will definitely pique your curiosity. Personally, I'm especially excited to have traditional dim sum available here in the Magic City. Some of my favorites include soup dumplings, pork siu mai, and har gow. My family dined here on Sunday night, just the third day the restaurant had been open. We ordered a variety of appetizers and entrees and were not disappointed. My favorites were the Pork Soup Dumplings, Tofu Skin with Shanghai Bok Choy, and the Crispy Spicy Shrimp. Everything we tried was flavorful and beautifully prepared. Service was great, and the restaurant has a modern, contemporary layout that makes for a comfortable dining experience. We're excited to have this new addition to the Birmingham food scene and plan to come back often! read more

Food first, thoughts after... Went here for dinner last night with my husband and friend. All 3 of us are chinese with high expectations coming in! I love the interior design and space. Plenty of seating. Just an observation but the staff was very diverse in ethnicity. Something else I noticed was everyone had different tasks. Someone to take order, someone to bring drinks, someone to bring food, and someone to clear table. I can tell everyone is just starting out because the service was okay. Don't get me wrong everyone was really nice but small things that I never notice in other restaurants I noticed here. They refilled drinks when they were empty vs half empty. No one came to check on us so when we wanted to place another order, get a togo box, and pay the bill, my husband had to walk up to someone. Towards the end we had a different person randomly walk around to make sure everything was okay. The flow was a little off and small common sense things were just not there. They brought soup out but no bowls or spoons. When I asked for bowls they forgot the spoons. Theres 3 of us but they only brought out 2 bowls of rice which yes that is what came with the orders. We ordered another dish for the 3rd bowl of rice that ended up being the last item to come out so then we took it togo. The portion sizes were not as big as some traditional chinese restaurants and not everything comes with rice which was a culture shock to us. The spare ribs were overly sweet with too much thickness to sauce. It was okay but not authentic. The bok choy with tofu skin was really authentic and we really enjoyed it. The soup was good too. We did good by deciding to try the peking duck. Having tried the beijing one it was pretty good here too. The wraps are not supposed to stick together like that but good thing we were able to get them separated. I would come back to order other food items to try. read more

The food is fantastic the dumplings are amazing. My order was very well made and fresh. The service is to be desired. Servers were bringing us the wrong food multiple times. The dumplings took well over 20+ minutes to get them orders and brought to our table. All the tables are very close together and the restaurant is very loud and hard to have an intimate conversation, But it's new so it will get a pass. Finally, I found a handmade noodle and dumpling place! I went there for both lunch and dinner. The place was nice and clean. The food was delicious and spicy, which I love. The only downside is that their service was very slow, and there was a long wait, so make sure you have plenty of time. I had green onion pancake, veggie dumplings, Chongqing spicy chicken, bamboo flounder, and Sichuan noodles. The prices were also affordable, and all the meals are great for sharing. read more

I went to Foo Hai for the soft opening and it was very highly anticipated. I have been waiting for this spot to open for a while and I was extremely excited for Birmingham to have a dumpling house. I honestly was not obsessed with the dishes unfortunately. They were all decent but none of them were a 10/10. I definitely don't recommend the grandmas noodles, these made our mouths tingle and they tasted like cleaning products. I will come back once they have been opened for a bit to get a better read on them, but for now I think they need to work out their kinks. read more

Dare I say this is the best Chinese spot in Birmingham?? Such great food, service, and ambiance with plenty of parking. The grandma's noodles and Mongolian beef were SO tasty. The Dan Dan noodles were also good, but I would ask to have it made with the wide noodles from the "grandmas noodles" dish next time. Highly recommend! read more

I attempted to eat lunch @ Foo Hai. After circling the block numerous times because there's inadequate parking, I finally found a spot. I walked inside and told them that I needed a table for one. The receptionist stated that it would be 15-20 minutes. I said, "That's okay, I'll just sit at the bar." She said, "bat is full," but there were clearly 8-10 empty seats at the bar. I genuinely thought that there was a language barrier, so I waited for a second while she discussed something with another employee. Then, she took two people to the bar. I figured that she was going to sit me at the bar in just a moment. So, I waited. Then, she came back to the booth and avoided eye contact with me, so I asked the other employee if I could sit at the bar. He said, "We don't have enough people to work today, so she doesn't really want to sit anybody at the bar." I said, "It's just me and there are still 6-8 seats up there, so why can't I sit at the bar?." He answered with, "It is not my call, she's the hostess." So, I said, "Well, I'm sorry to hear that, but if I cannot sit there, you will lose my business ." He said, "I'm really sorry, sir." So, I left. As I was driving by, I looked inside and she was taking the two Asian customers that walked in AFTER me to the bar. I've honestly never felt so discriminated against in my life. read more

The spiciest hot and sour soup ever! Too much for us. Eggplant was good. We ordered general tso shrimp but got chicken. It was very good so we didn't return it. Not listed as hot but was hot. Came for lunch and had the anhui noodle soup. The noodles were too dense and hard for my liking (I've made these at home before so I know it is hard to nail down), but the broth is very tasty and spicy. If you are used to genuine Sichuan food I recommend asking for extra spicy. If you try this place out do yourself a favor , try something on the chef special menu or a dish name you don't recognize. There are some great authentic dishes here and it would be a shame to waste a meal on beef fried rice! Looking forward to trying more dishes and giving an updated review. read more
