Chengdu is another gem in Birmingham serving up the best Chinese food in the city. Specializing in Sichuan cuisine and other dishes their menu is one that will leave you having a hard time deciding. After multiple visits and ordering takeout everything is always portioned generously, packed with fresh ingredients and tastes amazing. There's a reason why I always send out of towners here and it's due to the delicious food and great hospitality at the restaurant. This visit i ordered takeout. We ordered the steamed mini soup buns, Mongolian beef and twice cooked pork. The mini soup buns were soft and soupy as expected. The pork in them was tender and went great with the sauce included. It was a great appetizer and may be my next go to (along with the wontons in spicy peanut sauce which is the goat) The Mongolian beef was crispy, and the sauce it came with was savory. It's such a simple dish yet it tastes so good. My favorite of the night was the twice cooked pork. I did not expect such a large pile of pork belly but was glad of course. The pork was spicy and savory. A little bit of a fermented bland bean taste was coming through which I appreciated. Plenty of cabbage was in the dish too which help cut a little bit of the spice. Chengdu is a very clean, quaint spot with great service and plenty of parking. The food was a bit hit or miss for me, but I don't think I ordered their best dishes. The General Tso's and sesame chicken had more breading than I prefer, and the egg/spring rolls were pretty standard. The Mongolian beef and the lo mein were the best things that we tried, and I'd rate those a 6.5/10. I'd be open to giving this place another try and exploring more of the menu. read more

Tried this out for a second time some items were awesome others were kind of a mess. Don't order the steamed chicken in chili oil. It was cold and the chicken was a sliced old chicken thigh. It had that old gamey taste to it. The kind chicken especially dark meat gets when it's been left in the fridge for days. Our table enjoyed their spicy egg plant, chicken fried rice, Chinese donuts Cumin lamb and spicy chicken were good but too many peppers to go through Hunan chicken and kung pao shrimp were not that good unfortunately. Not enough meat. Only 5 pieces of shrimp for $14. And a few slices of chicken. Their chicken fried rice was really my favorite. Chengdu has a large menu with both American Chinese dishes as well as more authentic dishes. I placed an order for takeout and it was ready on time. For an appetizer I got the wontons in a spicy peanut sauce which was very good! For entrees I ordered the amazing chicken, cumin lamb, and Singapore rice noodle. The amazing chicken had a sweet, flavorful sauce and the all entrees came with a good amount of protein and large portion sizes. The only complaint is I thought there were way too many chili peppers in the cumin lamb. I had to pick probably half of them out and still felt like they overwhelmed the dish. Overall a solid Chinese food spot, I'll definitely be back to try some more of the menu! read more

I recommend the sichuan dumpling in spicy chili oil and the Singapore Mei fun. The wonton in spicy peanut sauce and crispy spicy chicken is good but not the best I've ever had. The peanut sauce was too overpowering lacking in spice and depth. for the crispy spicy chicken - chicken pieces were too small Avoid the sliced beef in sour mustard soup dish. Chengdu Cuisine is a good overall Chinese restaurant that offers both the "Americanized" Chinese dishes most of us grew up on, as well as more authentic Chinese dishes. Walking in, Chengdu Cuisine has a nice enough ambiance. Nothing over-the-top fancy, but pleasant enough. The service was okay, although I think that there was somewhat a language barrier. I asked a few questions and the answers were not even close to relevant. Still, they were friendly enough. I went with an egg roll a Dan Dan noodles. The Dan Dan noodles were less costly than other dishes, so I tried asking if it was more an appetizer and my server stared blankly. I asked if the noodles were made in house and the server explained it was like another dish but with noodles. The food was decent enough. Nothing life altering, but good. My first time here was for lunch. I arrived really close to the end of their lunch hours. No worries. I was able to place my to go order and the customer service was great! I ordered the dan dan noodles and they are amazing!!! So flavorful and just flat out yummy. Goodness!!!! This dish is on the menu as an appetizer but it's enough for multiple servings. I also decided to try 1 veggie spring roll and 1 egg roll. Both were delicious but I liked the veggie spring roll the best. It's served with sweet & sour sauce. So good!! Really enjoyed my time at Chengdu. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and some of the best Chinese I've had in the greater Hoover area. We were served quickly and comfortably, some highlights on the menu being the Chicken Lo-Mein: the meat was cooked to perfection, the vegetables were sautéed to just the right amount in the sauce, and the noodles were tender but not too soft. This new restaurant serves popular "Americanized" dishes like Sweet and Sour Chicken and Won Ton Soup. But they also offer tradition, authentic Chinese dishes as well as some exotic dishes for the adventurous. Bullfrog and duck blood to name a few. I pass on bullfrog and anything with blood in the name, but love me some Siu Mai dumplings, Sweet Pea Leaves, and Chow Fun Noodles. Warning, the spicy dishes are very spicy. They use Sichuan peppers that pack the heat. On our visit we ordered three dishes and the Siu Mai appetizer. The Sui Mai are steamed shrimp dumplings. I thought they were pretty good, but I probably enjoy the traditional pork version (not offered) more. I sure wish we had a dim sum place in Birmingham. For our entrees we ordered Stir-Fried Rice Noodle with Beef, Eggplant with Garlic Sauce, and Crispy Spicy Chicken. The StirFried Rice Noodles are the wide flat noodles. The noodles were cooked properly, and stir-fried with thin slices of beef, bean sprouts, and green onions. It had a nice flavor. The Spicy eggplant with garlic was more sweet than spicy. The tender eggplant was cooked with green bell peppers. This sauce in this dish was an excellent complement to the Crispy Spicy Chicken. The Crispy Spicy Chicken was bursting with flavor. The bite-size pieces of chicken were fried with a generous amount of those Sichuan peppers. An excellent meal, and I am excited to explore more of the menu. read more

Chinese food is a wonderful balance of salty, spicy, sour, and sweet. How does Chengdu Cuisine compare? Located in the former Mandarin House, my friend and I decided to try it for lunch. We went around noon, and parking was not a problem. A few people were dining, but it was not crowded. This place is perfect for when you are in a hurry or have a short lunch hour. I chose the Vegetable Deluxe which came with rice, but I had to pay extra for hot and sour soup, and an egg roll. To me, the portions seemed smaller. The entree alone was $11.00. The egg roll was $1.95 and the hot and sour soup, I think was $2.00. With this said, the food was really good. This meal definitely had the salty, spicy, sour, and sweet balance that I was looking for. The ambiance was nice. I remember the Mandarin House being very dark inside. Will this fill Mandarin House's shoes? Located on the edge of Hoover near Vestavia, Mandarin House has been around for a long time and survived a couple of different owners with the most popular being "Tony" until about a year ago. Chengdu Cuisine finally replaced the Mandarin House signage but with a Coming Soon notice. They finally opened about a month ago and don't even have their liquor license yet. So currently they cannot serve some sakes and plum wine. While I'm mentioning drinks, they also serve bottled brands of jasmine tea, green tea, black tea, plum juice and coconut cream milk drinks. Chengdu is a city in China known for it's regional flavors specifically its spicy flavors using chili peppers, star anise, Sichuan peppercorn, and other spices. Chengdu cuisine has an extensive menu with many traditional dishes. You will find the traditional ma po tofu, twice cooked pork as well as a few other exotic dishes such as pegs feet, stewed duck in beer or stir fried hot spicy squid. Don't worry, you will still find their versions of American standards like Mongolian chicken, moo goo gai pan and sesame chicken. They have only been open about a month and I have yet to eat there in person. They are prompt and package their to-go orders very well. While waiting, I did get an impromptu tour of the renovated facilities. Everything is brighter with brand new wood flooring. Mandarin House had been around for a long time and almost everything had to be replaced. They added two semi-large private dining rooms and the main dining room looks very nice. The waiting area is warm, inviting and traditionally decorated. Twice cooked pork: delicious thin marinated slices of pork. Crispy spicy chicken: almost as many pieces of red chili as there were chicken. Keep some water nearby. It was spicy but delicious. Stir-fried rice noodle with beef: Probably my favorite of the night. The flavor was spot on and just delicious. Yom Yom Yom. Seafood hot & sour soup: On par with what I'm used to. Shrimp fried rice: Nicely cooked and delicious. Won ton soup: Won tons were filled but not much. Soup was simple broth. Mr Chen's won to soup is still the standard to beat. Moo Goo Gai Pan: Their version has a thinner darker sauce using more shredded slices of white meat. I prefer a lighter sauce. It was still delicious and flavorful. Singapore rice noodles: Wok fried rice noodles seasoned with curry powder... yom yom yom. It will take awhile to try everything on their menu. I'm looking forward to sampling many of their more traditional dishes like their tofu and duck. Today is my third time here and it's the best visit yet! We went with a larger group and ordered a few extra dishes. Two of the best dishes today were not on the menu but rather part of the blackboard specials - sweet pea leaves and tofu and sliced beef in stone pot. Highly recommend these two! Also surprisingly good was the "Lion's Head" meatballs....better than many others I have had. Our server was great. We came in after Hoover Sun wrote up a short article about Chengdu - after a 3 year search for quality Chinese food in/around Hoover this is now "our spot". We ordered egg rolls, pan fried dumplings, chicken cashew, Mongolian beef, orange chicken, pork lo mein, spicy chicken in flaming pan... everything was delicious and very reasonably priced ($100 for everything listed here). YALL. The SZECHUAN SPICY BEEF NOODLE SOUP might be the best soup I've ever had in my life. Yes, that is a bold statement, but I said what I said. And yes it's $15, but this would be enough for me to make 2 meals from. Totally worth it. I split this and the crispy spicy chicken entree with my husband, but I was technically full after my half of the soup. The broth is magical. I don't even know what's in it. Unicorns? Fairy dust? probably. I don't even care. It is a work of art. The beef is plentiful and very tender but not dry. My Sunday pot roast is jealous and aspires to be this kind of beef. There's some bok choy in it and some other veggies that I'm not sure what they are but the flavor and texture were just so good. Plus a few crunchy flat noodle things and it's the perfect texture medley. It's like Pho's hot gym bro cousin with its heartiness and firmer spaghetti style noodles. So good. I wish I could go back and eat it for the first time again, but I will go back here solely for this soup. I'd drive across town for this soup. We also got the crispy spicy chicken and it was good, but I maybe won't get it again? I am undecided... It was a little salty and because all the peppers are chopped up, it makes them hard to work around. It had kind of a fishy flavor- like maybe some fish sauce or fish batter? I was like IS IT FISH?? or IS IT CHICKEN?? But not in a bad way- in a really interesting way that I liked. And the spices were on there in kind of a dry rub, not a sauce, which I also liked. Egg roll was served barely warm. Restaurant was deserted. Obviously they keep egg rolls on a warmer for to go orders. But, I was eating in. It should have been served piping hot, and freshly fried up. Hot & sour soup was just okay. Mongolian Shrimp served with the shells on but with a batter & deep fried? Really odd. Not used to eating my shrimp with shells & legs on & deep fried in a Mongolian sauce. It's just really unpleasant. They also didn't give me a spoon for my tea so I used the end of my knife to stir sugar into my tea. My water wasn't refilled either. Not happy eating here. read more

This restaurant is fairly new; it's in the location of a former favorite restaurant, The Mandarin House. It is spacious, well-decorated, and clean. The menu is extensive, so it took a bit to decide what to order. My wife had Orange Beef, which was very good except she would have likes it to be spicier. I ordered General Tso's Chicken; it was also very good: crispy, large pieces with a spicy and tangy sauce. I had a small serving of hot and sour soup, which I enjoyed, too. I have high standards when it comes to Chinese food and this new spot did not disappoint. They specialize in schezwan Chinese cuisine. Since it was my 1st time I asked the waitress for some advice and she was super helpful. The front of the menu is more americanized chinese food so skip to the back half where there are pics and descriptions of the authentic Chinese food. The spicy chicken flaming pan was one of the best dishes in birmingham. It was aromatic and had great flavor with chicken celery onions cabbage bell peppers and cilantro and not too spicy. I'm definitely coming back and bringing family for this dish. The house style tofu was good and u can adjust what veggies are included and what type of tofu. The braised pork belly with preserved veggies was also good with a sweeter soy based sauce and they said pork belly was braised for 2 hrs. The middle pieces were very tender. read more

This was my first visit time here, and I was lucky to be with friends who were very familiar with the menu and did all the ordering. We had a large group which enabled us to order several dishes to enjoy family-style. Everything was tasty, not a single bad dish today. - Sichuan dumplings in red chili oil These were savory and mildly spicy, a great appetizer. - Scallion pancakes I loved these, as did my 18-month old baby. Savory, flaky, crispy, and chewy, delicious on its own but also served with a dipping sauce on the side. If you've had Korean scallion pancakes, the Chinese version is quite different in that they are thinner and flakier, while the Korean version is thicker and wetter and has more vegetables (and sometimes shrimp) mixed in. If you've had Indian roti, these have a very similar texture. - Minced beef soup We ordered this to make sure there was a kid-friendly option on the table, but the adults enjoyed it too. Very similar to egg drop soup with the addition of minced beef and cilantro. Toddler loved this with steamed rice mixed in. - Spicy chicken in flaming pan One of my favorites today. Not as spicy as it looks, very flavorful, with tender chicken and perfectly cooked vegetables (bell pepper, onion, celery, etc). - Sweet pea leaves This was a surprise hit among the table. Stir-fried with garlic, a great complement to our meat entrees. - Tofu and fatty beef This was my other favorite dish today. Surprisingly spicy but also full of flavor, with silken tofu cubes and thin slices of beef mixed with veggies in a soupy sauce. - Braised meatballs in golden sauce These are also called lion's head meatballs. There is an option for red sauce or golden sauce, and our group chose the golden sauce, which is apparently pumpkin-based. The meatballs were tender and tasty, a great non-spicy entree. Served atop greens that looked like cabbage, but I did not taste the greens so I can't be sure. - Braised pork with preserved vegetables Very tender pork belly, savory with a hint of sweet, another good non-spicy entree option. - Shrimp pad thai This had a good flavor, but was not a true pad thai, as the type of noodles and the flavor and texture of the sauce was wrong. Not very surprised by this since this is a Chinese restaurant, not a Thai restaurant. But they weren't bad. The service was good. Lunchtime on a weekday and not super busy. We were promptly seated once our party arrived. We had a special table with a large glass lazy Susan on it that made sharing the dishes very easy. High chairs available. read more

We had a special meal, sweet pea leaves (added to the menu with a hand-written sticker) and sizzling duck w veg in oyster sauce, both 5-star items. They now have sake and other beer & wines in bottles. I had a Blue Moon. We started with one mediocre spring roll each - nicely fried, but the veg inside was mush. (We like cold vietnamese rice-wraps way better.) Each dish came with a personal bowl of white rice. The greens were great, but such a huge pile, we took a bunch away. This would be an excellent choice for a party of 4 to share. Authentic Chinese duck often comes chopped up with a cleaver, bones and all.
