I tried asking the cashier if there was new ownership or if the restaurant has changed but I don't think she understood or was chatty that night. When we came here before it was run down and no central air, not as clean and modern as it is now. You can see the artistry in the sticker on the window and the carefully crafted espresso and food menu! I'm hoping we understand the evolution more as time goes by! Really good Tacos! It's a small shop in a small plaza (next to the old blue bowl). The current name of the shop is Tacos by Anepalco not Fonda Moderna, they're still trying to figure out the business and name. The lady who helped us was super nice and informative. The ribeye, lengua, and tripa were all so delicious. Usually we don't like corn tortilla but theirs is really good and complements the meat very well. Tried this place out for the first time today after getting some Blue Bowl across the street and was surprised to see they serve some amazing Mexican food. The lady working the cash register clarified our confusion which may happen to others who also come for the first time - apparently it is a breakfast / brunch spot called Anepalco from morning till the afternoon, which is what we initially thought we were going to eat but since we came during dinner, it was Fonda Moderna Del Sur. Anywho, the change wasn't going to deter us from trying some things out since it smelled delicious from outside. We ended up ordering the rib eye burrito along with a tripas taco, al pastor taco, and an eloté. It didn't take long for all the food to come out and it all looked very presentable and tasty. And to our satisfaction, everything ended up being really delicious. I would give this place 5 stars but I must say, it is on the expensive side for Mexican food. But if you're willing to spend a little more for some higher quality Mexican classics, then I suggest you give this place a try. read more

My husband and I come to Fonda multiple times a month and the food and service are always great. We usually get one of the bowl options, which are filling and always delicious. I highly recommend the ribeye or filet options. They also recently remodeled the interior of the restaurant and it's very inviting. Parking can be tough in front of the restaurant, but there's a small lot behind the building where it's usually easier to find a spot. Fonda is a small spot totally worth supporting! read more

We came here for dinner after seeing a video on Instagram. They noticed we were first timers to the restaurant so they offered recommendations on the menu. The entire staff were friendly and helpful. There's plenty of seating both inside and out. The only issue is a lack of parking since it's a small strip of businesses adjacent to CHOC/St Joseph's. Coming for dinner shouldn't be a problem most of the time. They recommended the carne asada which was intriguing since they also have prime cuts of beef as a speciality. I also had the waygu ribeye and was surprised to think the carne asada was better than the waygu. It was juicy and tender. Perfectly cooked. I also tried the tripa. I've had tripe in my pho plenty of times but never in a taco. The texture was different than what I'm used to but I loved it. It se slightly crispy from the grill and had a great smokey flavor. All in all it was a great experience with perfect service and fantastic food. We'll be coming back here often. read more

Wow were these the best tacos I've had in a very very long time. It was my first time here so the women at the counter helped me order by recommending their favorites. You can't go wrong with anything you order here. Although you might be tempted to take your food to-go since you order at the counter, I strongly recommend eating in or even right outside to watch them grill some of the meat right in front of you! Let me start by saying, I'm from Long Beach and have been to plenty of taquerias from LA down to San Diego. I say this with all honesty, the wagyu ribeye taco here is the single best taco I have EVER had. The lengua was stellar and the pollo a las brasas was chef's kiss. The vibe is very authentic street food, I love it. Customer service is top notch, suuuuper friendly! Don't forget to grab an agua fresca to go with your tacos! The current name is temporary and will be shifting to Fonda Moderna Del Sur. You walk in and it feels like you're in Tijuana with the tacos on those infamous blue plastic plates and the little barrel salt shakers! Salsas are in molcajetes. But let's get to the important stuff: the food. We ordered a couple different tacos. Wagyu Ribye, Wagyu Lengua, Pollo a las brasas, filet mignon, and barbacoa. We also got guacamole appetizer. The guacamole appetizer gave elevated vibes but with a definite kick! If you don't like spicy ask if they can reduce the jalapeño. Back to the tacos. My husband who is a taco aficionado, said he had the best taco of his life here, the wagyu ribeye. I'll have to agree with him. The flavors were FLAVORING! The meats were juicy, the beans were such a great addition to these tacos, it changes the flavor profile in a positive way. And then you wash it alll down with an agua fresca?!! Mexican here who has eaten a lot of tacos in her lifetime, but these by far are the best tacos I've had, from the tortilla to the juicy meat and everything on top. This is a craft taco place that is more than worth the "premium" price. At $5-6 a pop, you can get a 5 inch taco with Iberico pork, wagyu lengua, and filet mignon.
