Wow. What an amazing way to follow up an amazing dinner. The very nice employee recommended the chocolate cookie dough and I'm so glad he did!! The coconut flavor was prevalent at first but definitely got softer over time. I love the HUGE chucks of cookie dough in every bite. I'm a true believer that the cookie dough is the best part. Definitely one of the best ice creams I've ever had. I can't wait to try more flavors!! read more

Holy geez, vegan ice cream!! It's the best thing ever!! You just can't beat their ice cream flavors either. So many delicious flavors to choose from & you can mix & match in the same cone! Hell yes! I didn't care for this ice cream. It was also pretty expensive. I understand they use natural ingredients so I figured that's why. The staff was kinda rude when we asked to try a flavor. Not very welcoming. read more

FoMu stands for faux moo (like fake cow). I haven't had a lot of dairy free ice cream even though my sister is lactose intolerant. I tend to avoid eating vegan ice cream because often times it lacks that creamy texture I associate with regular ice cream. During our trip to Boston, my husband and I had an intense craving for ice cream after dinner. FoMu was nearby so we decided to check it out. To be perfectly honest, we started eating FoMu without entirely realizing it was vegan. We knew that it wasn't "normal" ice cream (tasted completely different) so we asked an employee and that's when we found out that it was vegan! All of their ice cream will have a strong coconut flavor running through it and that is because their ice cream base is coconut milk. We tried their Vanilla Bean (speckled with real Madagascar vanilla bean) and F'Oreo (vanilla ice cream packed with house made "F'oreo" chocolate sandwich cookie chunks) flavors. I have to say that their ice cream's texture is more like gelato. It's very soft and creamy and lacks some firmness. I didn't mind the strong coconut flavor in the F'Oreo ice cream because it actually went along very nicely with their chocolate sandwich cookies. My husband really minded the coconut flavor in his Vanilla Bean though because it did not even remotely come close to tasting like vanilla. All we could taste was coconut which was a little disappointing. For the most part I thought it was a pretty solid vegan ice cream spot. I think FoMu could benefit from trying different ice cream bases besides coconut milk because it's such an overwhelming flavor and if you don't like coconut then you're sort of out of luck. With that said, the employees are all very friendly and you can sample as many flavors as you like. Worth a visit to check out some tasty vegan ice cream! 3/5 read more

By far the best non-dairy ice cream I've ever hard. It was 100% one of those moments where I thought I was just eating regular ice cream.

Cute, clean, hipster-looking place. I was skeptical at first when hearing that everything was vegan and plant-based, but after trying it I made a complete 180! The taste and unique texture of these desserts were much better than their dairy counterparts. So far, I have loved every single flavor of ice cream and cake from here (although the brownie was a bit too sweet for me and made my heart race). PROTIP: One underrated accommodation they make for you is the number of ice cream flavors you can choose for your cup. We were told we could have as many flavors as we wanted, as long as they could fit it in! My favorite ice cream flavors would probably be the Cold Brew, Fresh Mint Chunk (not overly minty), and Lavender. The Avocado flavor was pretty good, but too much of it is a bit overwhelming. read more

Plant-based ice cream!! FoMu has some really delicious and unique flavors, and they don't overcharge for vegan ice cream. Everything is clearly labeled so you'll always know if there's soy, gluten, or peanuts. Spoons are even made of wood so you don't have to feel guilty about using plastic. I tried the blueberry crisp ice cream and it was amazing- not overpoweringly sweet and with a great consistency. I'll definitely be back often to try out all the other flavors! read more

This place is really a hit or miss. As it is plant-based ice cream, I feel like it's very much the same scenario as it would be with fruits: it goes in and out of season and you can't always tell from the way it looks whether or not it's going to be more sour than sweet. I've had Fomu on a few occasions and have had great experiences and some meh experiences. In general, I would say that for the most part this vegan ice cream has more of a "sour" taste to it. When you get anything with chocolate, it has this odd sensation that gets your mouth pretty dry (so glad they have the pitches of water!!) read more

It's just... not that good. I get it if you can't or choose not to eat dairy. But for all of us who have a choice, FoMu is very lucky there is no other cute ice cream shop in the South End. Also $11 for a scoop of vanilla with two toppings is crazy. read more

Disclaimer: I'm not a fan of coconut flavored things, which Fomu uses as the base of most of their ice creams. However, there's really something here for everyone! The little shop on Tremont is super cute and artsy, with an excellent succulent collection, and the staff is super nice! I sampled: - Avocado: smooth and unique but the sourness of the lime mixed with the coconut undertones put me off - Matcha white chocolate chip: matcha flavor was good and strong, but again, I just didn't like the coconut - fresh garden mint chip: Soo good! Very minty with generous sheets of dark chocolate folded in. Could barely taste the coconut - Triple chocolate brownie: AMAZING. This could pass for Ben & Jerry's in a blind taste test. It's super chocolatey, and the brownie chunks are chewy and rich. Got a pint to indulge in at home! Vegan or not, this is some great ice cream. The texture is spot on - very creamy and sticky. So glad I found Fomu! read more

What to get: Sweet Lavender Service: 4/5 Atmosphere: Dessert Wait: 5 mins (Sunday 10PM for 2) The Experience: I'm on a vegan streak for today! I'm always up for something unique, different, and possibly extraordinary. FoMu is a place where us lactose-intolerant people find a healthy and happy outlet for our ice cream needs. Made with coconut milk, don't be fooled into thinking this will be watery. Quite the contrary, the ice cream tastes richer and creamier than traditional dairy-based ice cream. It's a shocking experience, but one I found much more enjoyable than regular ice cream or frozen yogurt. I got the sweet lavender flavor and found that the coconut milk base overpowers the delicate lavender flavor. It's okay because it's still refreshing. Also worth noting is that the ice cream melts fairly quickly, so if you're interested in getting that 'gram shot, do so quickly. Cute shop to visit while in Boston. Glad I didn't miss it while I was traveling through. read more

Yummm whether you're vegan or not. They're very friendly and generous with tastings. I got the berry and avocado flavors. Avocado ice cream is amazing. This isn't icy vegan ice cream like Rice Dream or Almond milk based ice creams, but very creamy due to coconut milk. No, the ice cream doesn't taste like coconut. I love dairy foods and fatty foods so ice cream is a huge weakness. I'm trying to cut my lactose intake and leaning towards veganism but this place didn't make me feel like I was cutting anything. I was definitely excited to visit this place on my trip to Boston and it met my expectations. read more

I hate the fact that I actually fortunately snagged one of the few remaining housemade Choco Tacos a few Tuesdays ago, because now all other food tastes like baby shit. I haven't eaten baby shit, but I've been around it quite a bit (what, with a baby and all) and having consumed non-FoMu Choco Tacos after sampling this treat, I can wholeheartedly stand behind the aforementioned statement. Vegan or made from pure cow's knees, ice cream in any iteration is worth a go, so if you're a purist who just said internally "It's not ice CREAM, Damien; it's an iced coconut-based dessert," perhaps you're missing the point: this is exceptional product. Visit any location on a Tuesday, go directly to their freezer with take-home pints and scour for a gigantic Choco Taco. If they have one, buy it - it's $8. If they have three, buy them - $24. If they had one but a sweet old woman just got it for her grandson, place a ten spot on the counter, swat her nose with a rolled newspaper, grab the Droppo Taco, say "Keep the change!" to the FoMu staffer, and high tail it to a quiet alley where you can be obscene with your goods. And obscene you will be. read more

While visiting Boston, my boyfriend and I came to FoMu with a friend and I loved it! We walked past it a bunch and never went inside, and I'm so glad we found it on Yelp and gave it a try. It has the cutest interior design. It's so so so cozy and well decorated, and has plenty of seating to meet up with friends. Their ice cream is all made with coconut cream, which I really loved! It brought just a hint of coconut into all of the flavors, and was not overwhelming at all. I got a cup with half Chocolate Cookie Dough and half Rockiest Road, which was really great since the staff let me pick half of each since I was having a hard time picking between the two. I'll definitely be coming back next time I'm in Boston! :) read more

Surprisingly good for plant-based ice cream. Honestly, I don't usually enjoy foods that have been made vegan, but this was really good. It was quite similar to regular dairy-based ice cream, just a little less creamy. I had the strawberry rhubarb, while my friend had the grasshopper pie (mint chocolate). The grasshopper tasted a little more like regular ice cream. Only reason for taking a star off is the price. read more

With how trendy FoMu (and the South End in general) has become, had to come check it out. We got here pretty late at night and there was still a line. They really get people moving fast, so you don't really feel like you're in line forever. Interior is bright with large windows and high ceilings, seems very spacious with a minimalist feel. They serve ice cream to go as well as some selections in prepacked pints and cakes in a separate fridge if you want to grab and go and don't want to wait in line. There's plenty of seating including a fun short table covered in toys. The menu has a pretty extensive selection of different flavors as well as rotating seasonal selections. Some of them are pretty normal (vanilla, rum raisin) and others are rather exotic (avocado). They also serve espresso coffee drinks and other drinks like smoothies if that's what you're in the mood for. Small selection of baked goods as well, including options like home made pop tarts and whoopee pies. Everything is vegan. You can sample the ice creams before you decide on a flavor, and the staff is very patient about letting you try what you like. They were very knowledgeable about the flavors and answered all my questions very nicely. The ice cream itself is smooth and not too sweet, and has a really creamy texture. However, you definitely can taste that it is coconut milk based, especially with some of the lighter flavors, so it may not be a go if you are not a fan of coconut. Overall, really impressed! read more

Ah, a dedicated vegan ice cream parlor in the heart of Boston-- just what I needed after a long week of traveling! We walked here after dinner, and there was a sizable line at 9 PM on a weekday. All the flavors looked great-- and they have plenty of toppings and shakes, making my decision quite difficult! I went with a cookies and cream style flavor and a chocolate mint flavor. The staff is more than willing to mix flavors, even in the smallest size! The mint flavor was perfect-- the coconut milk makes the ice cream rich and velvety! The cookies and cream flavor was also smooth, but a little too sweet for my liking. I did appreciate the authentic churned texture not usually found in vegan ice creams! My friend thought the avocado and matcha flavors were exceptional! Service was somewhat slow but very friendly once we reached the counter! There is plenty of seating and A/C! read more

Initially, I was super stoked about FoMu opening up in the South End. I used to travel to the Allston location just to get vegan ice cream, so of course, convenience and accessibility are total pluses in my book. I've been to this location on two separate occasions. I had a small cup of strawberry ice cream during my first visit last week and a small cup of vanilla bean tonight. The strawberry flavor had actual strawberry slices in it, which was a great addition to the treat! The ice cream itself was flavorful and not too sweet and just right- it was quite enjoyable, though I was kind of tired of its taste after awhile. This was probably the better one out of the two I've tried. The vanilla bean one was nothing special and melted a bit fast as well, so it got runny. The flavor got tiring (really quick!) and I couldn't really finish it, unfortunately! I used to be very enthusiastic about FoMu and raved about it to my friends, but now I have mixed feelings. My boyfriend came here for the first time today and he really enjoyed his mint chocolate scoop despite being skeptical about the idea of vegan ice cream, so it really just depends on the individual! I probably wouldn't come back here for awhile, but I'd recommend this place to anyone. :) ** update ** I've been coming to FoMu every now and then for their baked vegan goods and they're so enjoyable! Cupcakes: Caramel Spice & Strawberry. So, so good! The frosting was piped nicely and elegantly and the cupcake itself was moist and decadent. My favorite out of the two was probably the caramel spice. It tasted just like autumn. :') Whoopie pies: Chocolate & Pumpkin. The whoopie pie sandwiches had heaps of filling and it made for a sweet, lovely treat. My favorite out of the two was definitely the pumpkin one (seeing a pattern here- I'm a sucker for autumn-themed treats!). The sandwich was unbelievably soft and fluffy. The cream was perfect and wasn't too sweet. A worker told me these were made from a new recipe! I've also tried their vanilla bean ice cream sandwich, which consisted of their vanilla bean ice cream alongside two large chocolate chip cookies. It was so yummy and filling despite its seemingly small size. Though their baked goods are a little pricey, they definitely taste amazing. I usually pick up a few for occasions like birthdays or holidays (Mother's Day, Father's Day). Adding one star to my previous rating! :- ) read more

FoMu!! You're killing the dairy free ice cream game. I have tried lots of vegan ice creams and this was one of the best. The ice cream base is coconut, which can be an overpowering flavor even if it's a flavor you like, but I honestly didn't pick up on it in the flavors I tried. I had a sugar cone with a scoop of strawberry and a scoop of cookie dough. I ordered the small and it was huge. The ice cream was so soft and creamy, I don't think you'd even know it was non-dairy. The fantastic fresh strawberry flavor reminded me of the ice cream at Jeni's in Columbus, Ohio. This location is very clean and quiet with minimalist decor. Staff was friendly and helpful and allowed me to try a few samples. The baked goods on display looked great but I didn't get to try any this visit. Definitely do yourself a favor and try this DELICIOUS ice cream, whether you're vegan or not. read more

Went here with a friend as she thought I'd love it; I'd previously been to the Allston location after a dinner at Seoul Soulangtang and found it meh. BUT I have to say I love this South End location much better (and it's much closer). It just opened recently in the South End and is a gorgeous space; all bright and white with plenty of seating. They have a menu of rotating flavors, seasonal flavors, and regular flavors. Everything is vegan (the ice cream is made of coconut milk) and most are gluten free, unless they have mix ins like cake. All of this is noted on the menu. They're wonderful about letting you sample flavors, which is great because they have so many unique ones. I tried the avocado, sweet lavender, maple bourbon, and peanut butter. The avocado is not as unique as you'd think and is pretty mild (which makes sense, since avocado is a pretty mild fruit in itself). I thought it was decent though my friend didn't like it since she said it didn't taste like avo. The sweet lavender was very floral but very unique. The maple bourbon was strongly maple flavored, almost to the point of being too sweet, but was a really good flavor. The peanut butter wasn't as good as I expected, though it's made from the local Teddie's PB. I ended up getting a mini with sweet lavender and maple bourbon and toasted coconut flakes on top. This came out to almost $5, which is extremely pricey (hence the 1 star off). I tried some of my friend's strawberry and it was the best strawberry ice cream I've ever tasted. Overall, I love that they have mini sizes, unique flavors, good service, are open late (until 11 everyday), and are paleo/vegan/gf compliant, but the price tag makes this a very rare treat. read more

This is an amazing vegan ice cream shop I found on my last visit to Boston. They had some delicious seasonal flavors including caramel pumpkin pie and apple cider donut (such a New England flavor). I had a sample of both and they were delicious but the pumpkin pie one was absolutley amazing so I decided to go with that. The ice cream had the most delicious caramel sauce that I can't believe is vegan along with actual pumpkin pie pieces. The ice cream was creamy and had a great texture and other than a subtle coconut flavor (most are coconut milk based) I could not tell it was vegan. It was on the pricier side but worth the price. read more

Really great ice cream! Would definitely go again for the cookies and cream! The interior is also beautiful.

Ordered the mini and couldn't resist having them put both the raspberry chocolate chip and a little of the coffee ice cream in the mini cup. Both flavors were that good, I couldn't decide! I'm a gluten free, dairy free vegetarian and this was the first time I've had ice cream in four years. It exceeded all of my expectations! The coffee is a perfect balance of just strong enough for someone who loves coffee flavor, it's not too strong and is the perfect level of sweet. You can tell it's made with the best coffee in town. Love George Howell coffee. The raspberry chocolate chunk reminded me of cherry garcia minus the cherries. It was so good! It's made from real raspberries(which made me feel better about eating it because I'm normally very health conscious and watch what I eat) and it has a good amount of chocolate chunks in it. It was a lot sweeter than the coffee, but in a good way. Tasted even better than dairy ice cream(or what I remember of it). Glad I got a mini size, as it's very filling. Props for giving generous scoops, but almost $9 for a mini was kind of ridiculous. Next time I might just get the small and save the rest since the smallest size is so expensive. The ambiance is clean, minimalist, and very quiet. Perfect spot to sit down and enjoy some ice cream with friends and family. read more

The product itself gets 5 stars; absolutely amazing taste no matter what flavor you order. The service in the Tremont Street store gets 1 star. If there are more than 3 people in line, be prepared to wait 20 minutes. This is not a one time experience. I have been 4 or 5 times and only once was the service decent. I actually left twice after waiting 20 minutes without more than 5-6 people being served. No awareness from the staff whatsoever. Others left before I did as well. Writing this outside FoMu as my wife waits in line behind 2 customers. 12 minutes and counting. Sorry to be so negative but I worked in food service myself for over ten years and employees need to know that the customer experience is just as important as the product. It really is an awesome place; they just need better, more aware employees who know they need to hustle when the store is full of customers. I do encourage everyone to try their product; I just hope you go when their A team is working. read more
