Great bakery and cafe a bit hidden from the road outside Talkeetna. It's pretty busy inside while it doesn't look like it from the outside. We had the toast and Sunday classic (smoked salmon bagel) and both were delicious. The bagel is a bit different than the usual kind. It's smaller, harder and a bit crunchy on the outside. The plates comes with two slices of fresh fruit which was also delicious.
This has a cool atmosphere, and is a healthy option. The bagels are homemade but are pretty plain and bland. There's a pretty limited menu and it seems the menu was different than what we saw in the store. The staff was friendly though and they do have a selection of a lot of home made cookies, breads, etc
If you are driving and are trying to make it to Talkeetna and you are hungry? This is you stop. It is not seen from the road so you have to look for the sign on the side of the road. I love going to small businesses and supporting the small business owner. The service was great and pretty straight forward. The menu changes and it is written on a chalk board. I had a bowl of the American Goulash and their breakfast sandwich. They make their own break and you can taste the freshness. They also have coffee, tea and other drinks but NO BOTTLE WATER. They do have a pitcher so you can get the water. The restaurant is quaint and wide open. They have different kinds of tables. For 2, 6 and even a high top. Sometimes they have live bands and all in case that you want to stop by and pizza on Wednesday and Saturdays.
Easily the best breakfast place in Talkeetna. They don't have a fancy menu just a few breakfast and lunch items but hey less is more. We ordered Good Morning Sandwich and Classic Sunday ( bagel with cooked salmon and cream cheese). Everything was fresh and delicious! They have many baked goodies too. I got the walnut rugelach which was very soft and not too sweet. We tried their drip coffee and mocha which again did not disappoint. Make sure you help to clean up when you finish and put the utensils in the bins. It appears they still operate at 50% capacity. They also require customers to wear masks which seems uncommon in Talkeetna but that did not bother us at all. They have masks by the entrance if you don't have one. Just respect their policy.
As soon as you walk in the smell of the fresh baked goods draws you in. They have a good assortment of things to choose from and it's a nice pit stop. I got the Classic Sunday and was pleased with the quality of the smoked salmon. There was a generous amount of salmon atop a spread of cream cheese, tomatoes, and fresh microgreens. The whole grain bagel it was in was also amazing. It had a nice texture to it. I also got to try the Cafe au lait and barley chaga tea. Chaga is a mushroom that has antioxidant benefits. It tasted slightly earthy but not so earthy to deter you. I loved it and plan to buy some later.
Loved this place. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The place is cute, warm, and welcoming. The bread was delicious - the baguette was just perfect. I had the Sunday breakfast which was a bagel with smoked salmon and it was fantastic. There's a little play kitchen which was great for my 5-year-old. She didn't complain while we waited for our food. I'm sad I missed their pizza night because I'm sure it would have been amazing. I don't know if I'll ever be in this part of the world again, but if I am - I will go here.
My husband and I visited Talkeetna with friends who recommended this place. It's tiny and eclectic inside, but the service was kind, and the food was good. The first time we went, we had the Babka, the Classic Sunday Bagel (cream cheese, tomato, smoked salmon, and micro greens), hot cocoa, Mexican chai, black bean brownie, and their Not-a-breakfast burrito with everything. It was all delicious! I dare say it was one of the best bagels I've ever had! The brownie was moist and rich without being overly sweet. The Mexican chai was spicy and warm. My husband didn't share his burrito, so there you go. My husband and I returned for lunch the following day because we were intrigued by the description of the Fancy Grilled Cheese. It was good, but not as impressive as we hoped. I thought it would have been better with green apples for that tart punch. I wanted more spinach and found the crust a little tough. My husband and I still enjoyed the grilled cheeses, which could have been more robust and flavorful. Regardless, we recommend this place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They had a diverse menu and a daily variety of baked goods that included dog treats, so stop at The Flying Squirrel!

What a delightful find in Alaska! The chocolate brownie was fabulous. The subtle addition of black beans gave it an incredibly rich, moist texture and somehow enhanced the deep chocolate flavor even further. The jalapeño chorizo quiche was simply to die for--a must-have. I've traveled extensively around the world, and this is genuinely one of the finest quiches I've ever had. Perfectly balanced, packed with flavor, and beautifully baked. The latte with caramel birch syrup was the perfect companion for the Alaskan weather. It leaves you with a wonderfully warm, comforting feeling that lingers long after the last sip. Don't miss the frosted coffee cake with lemon and berries. It's moist, fresh, and makes the perfect treat to pack along for a hike through the Alaskan woods. The bakery itself is incredibly quaint and charming, with beautiful flowers everywhere. It feels like stepping into a warm wooden cabin nestled in nature. The atmosphere is just as memorable as the food. I would absolutely love to visit Flying Squirrel Bakery again. It's one of those special places that makes a trip unforgettable. read more

Absolutely the cutest place with excellent service. I enjoyed my sandwich with thick slices of bread and the drinks were on point. I even went back to purchase the reusable cup (with drink) for $10. Off the road into Talkeetna and a very pleasant experience. Love the vegan sando! read more

Wow, I haven't reviewed the Squirrel?! What is wrong with me? This is THE best pizza in Talkeetna, easily. It's some of the best pizza in Alaska. DISCLAIMER: pizza is not always available, only for pizza nights. Pizza nights are: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 4-9pm You have been warned! If you can't make a pizza night they also have great grab-n-go baked goods, some of the best in the area. Employees are vigilant about cleanliness and mask-wearing, outside seating was available! read more

Obsessed! If you are vegan (and honestly if you aren't) you MUST come here! The "trust me I'm vegan" sandwich is so fresh and delicious. It's perfect. I got 3 baked goods as I was so excited there were 3 vegan options!!! My favorite was the rhubarb bar but the cookie and the vegan balls (cannot remember what they were called but sooo good). We did wait in line about 30 minutes at 12:00 on a Tuesday, but worth it and everything came out quickly. Don't miss it! read more
A year later and the specials on the menu for sandwiches were amazing! I asked for an americano with white chocolate sauce & cream & and they suggested that I use the cream by the coffee and then needless to say it was really bad. However, they were great about having me exchange it with something an Alaska, chai, which was great ! So maybe not the best coffee spot but definitely the best sandwich shop all in all it's still a 4 out of 5 Great place to stop for the local relaxed atmosphere, great food, and drinks. read more
Amazing wood-fired pizza and desserts. Absolutely loved it!! They didn't seem to like the fact that I am a pastor, but I don't hold that against them! They've created a wonderful restaurant that I will always remember!! Exceptional! And it was great meeting you all!! read more

This is my favorite place in Talkeetna, and in my opinion a must stop in the little town. It is not located downtown, but a few miles before off the spur road. It is an unassuming little log cabin place, but they put out some delicious treats. The cafe, like the town, has a relaxed hippie vibe to it. For a smaller cafe they have quite an extensive menu of breakfast, and lunch items. Everything I have tried has been carefully crafted, and is loaded with lots of fresh ingredients. They use fresh grown, and local ingredients whenever possible. They support Alaska grown, and also have a selection of craft beer and wine for lunch/dinner time. Their house made breads, and pastries are really delicious, and made fresh daily. They also have gluten free options, which is a plus. I have dined here for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and stopped just for coffee and bakery items on several different occasions. Each time the customer service is great, and the items I order come out made to order. There typically is not much of a wait for your food even when they are busy. On their weekend pizza nights the place can be pretty packed. I really enjoy their wood fire pizzas, and think they have some of the best pizza I have eaten since moving to Alaska. They have a selection of about 5 different pizzas, and you cannot build your own creation. But, there is something for everyone from plain cheese to a daily pizza special. Pizza nights are on Fridays and Saturdays--during summer they also serve them on Wednesday and Thursday nights. For lunch their house made paninis are really good. I love the fancy grilled cheese with smoked salmon, and the panini of the week is always something tasty and creative. For pastries our favorites are the chocolate peanut butter cookies, chocolate ruggelachs, and the black brownie. They also usually have a small dessert selection of cakes and cupcakes to finish your meal. They bake a chocolate truffle cake that's super decedent and delicious. If you find yourself in Talkeetna I highly recommend stopping by the Flying Squirrel even if it just for some coffee, tea, or a pastry! read more

Nice cafe in Talkeetna with plenty of healthier options. Came here for breakfast this past weekend. We ordered ahead online which you can do through their website--I recommend this especially during the busy summer months! Everything was hot and ready for us when we arrived. I got the not-a-breakfast burrito which I didn't ask but based on the ingredients I'm pretty sure it's vegan. It was delicious and filling. My husband got the smoked salmon bagel and really enjoyed it. Good coffee too, and my husband got their house made rhubarb soda which was great. I've been here once before just to get bakery goods and those were all great too--especially their "Kimmie" cookies! Someday I'll come back and try their lunch menu. Their pizza looks good too, which they offer only a few days a week in the evening. read more
