On the only rainy day of our trip this July we stopped in Talkeetna. Our guide mentioned the mayor of Talkeetna and the spinach bread are must see/try's. Being from California we miserably trekked through the rain to the spinach bread truck, stomachs grumbling and socks wet. We ordered 3 spinach bread and 2 curry bowls, and it took a minute to come out due to so many people waiting. There's not a whole lot of dry/covered seating. We had to get everything to go, which wasn't ideal because of the rain and non-waterproof packaging. But it was still very worth it. I wish it was sunny on this day so we could've enjoyed more of the city, but that's the true Alaskan summer experience. read more

There was a long line (took 20 minutes to order) , but I think the worth was the wait was worth it as the spinach bread was really delicious. I wish the size was bigger, as it was not enough for one full meal. I'm curious how the breakfast burrito was. It's like your regular cheese bread stick, kinda thick, with a thin layer of cheddar cheese and spinach and thin garlic cloves on it. $7 for a square slice of blueberry rubharb crisp. This used to be my favorite at the State Fair every year. I was really happy to see a booth while visiting home & attending Friday Flings in Palmer this summer. I guess my initial love has dwindled, or it just isn't as good as it used to be? It's very simple, while they do offer a few other items on their menu, this is the staple. About the size of a personal pan pizza, always served freshly baked, hot out of the oven. I think it is their spelt grain bread that makes it stand out for a more unique flavor. However, I was a bit underwhelmed with it on my recent visit after 7+ years of anticipating an old favorite. While it was still served fresh, hot out of the oven- it was a lot more greasy & less flavor than I remember. I didn't have any garlic on my serving, which was a bummer when I remember biting into perfectly roasted cloves on other occasions. The portion size also seems to have dwindled a bit. Maybe it was the hefty price tag attached? It was a little painful to spend $8 on a plate no bigger than my hand- the equivalent of one small slice of bread w/ a few toppings. I feel like I could pretty easily make my own at this point & spend less on the ingredients than one serving here costs. Either way- it was enjoyable to have a plate spending the afternoon in Palmer instead of driving all the way out to Talkeetna or planning on spending more attending the State Fair. read more

All I can say is that it was raining and cold, but it was worth trying to stay dry(ish) under an umbrella at one of their picnic tables to be able to enjoy their spinach bread and blueberry-rhubarb crisp. I loved the spinach bread but would have enjoyed the blueberry-rhubarb crisp a little more if perhaps it had been served warm. I imagine the chilly weather may have had something to do with that. I found them by the 100 person line at the AK state fair, yesterday. All day long the line looked just as long. If it weren't for a woman at a table next to me raving about the blueberry rhubarb crumble I would have just ignored it for the other options (try that Reuben place normally in Palmer). Later in the day I decided to brave the line. It was way faster than I expected. The staff was super efficient and the pricing was better than most other options at the fair. Both the spinach bread and the crumble were far better than expected and I hope they get back to talkeetna before I leave. Totally worth even a long line. read more
