This is a fantastic vegan/vegetarian restaurant that is built like an old "diner" from the sixties. I personally love it but it might throw some "straight and narrow" types off. It seems almost a little hippyish and might be part of the reason that an old hippy like me loves it. I frequent Flying Saucer about three times a year. It seems to be on a downward slope. I had the biscuits and gravy this time. In the past you used to get a full biscuit and ample gravy. This time I got HARD pieces of a biscuit, and hardly any gravy to soften the pieces up. I also noticed that my wife's lunch was smaller portions that usual. I just noticed on Facebook that they have a new cook. That might explain some things. The other issue is that they take cash only. Other than trying to hide something, credit card providers only charge around a 3% fee, by accepting credit/debit/mobile pay I would think you would get more business. read more

I did think it weird that a breakfast place wouldn't be open until 8a, but since I'm nearby and start work at 8:30, whatever. Got there 5 min early, no sign of anyone. 8am, nothing, 8:10, nothing. Finally, I had to head to work. They may have good food and excellent service. But if a restaurant (especially a BREAKFAST restaurant) can't open on time, even a couple minutes late, why bother marketing as a breakfast joint? Plus, as I alluded to earlier, opening a breakfast establishment at 8a is an hour too late for many people. We had the pleasure of eating at the Flying Saucer today. The four of us each had coffee (delicious dark brewed),. For entrees my wife had the chicken salad sandwich on focaccia. She loved it. I had the trucker bowl which is biscuits and gravy with an over easy egg. Also delicious. My son had a steak breakfast burrito and his girlfriend had huevos ranchero. Both really liked their meals. The service was also very attentive refilling water, coffee and asking about our meals. What a cute lil diner! This spot has retro decor and awesome music playing. I went here with my little one this morning and so glad we did! As soon as my little one got situated, our server came over with two little toys for her to play with during our meal. Love it when a place is so welcoming to the little ones! I ordered the Breakfast Sampler for me and the little one to share. I chose the apple sausage as my meat and wow was that good! It also came with 3 silver dollar pancakes and they were fluffy and had a slight sweetness to them. My little one all 3 of them in record time! This place was so bad, it's laughable. Very few vegan options, but I decided the Tofu Sweet Potato hash was the way to go. Microwaved, flavorless bits of sweet potato. Cheap deep fried tofu, no flavor. Watery kale. No garlic, no seasoning, no salt, just BLAND. The cook doesn't know how to cook. I can microwave my own sweet potato for $1 and it'd taste better. My plate came with my choice of side. I got the apples, don't make my mistake. They sucked. Also microwaved. I don't get it. I've never had such a bland, inedible plate of food before. I've learned to forgive and forget. My once 4 star rating was simply based on the lack iced tea. The coffee is delicious enough and the menu is too good for my biased judgement. Today's choices: Black Beans Cakes and then a special, the Latin Sampler. Maybe it's the fact that I'm heading to Central America this month, but I couldn't resist my choice of the sampler and nudging the lady to get the black bean cakes. As a fat kid in a skinny body, I was rather impressed with the portions for both of our dishes. After looking over the menu I opted for my go-to benedict and not only was it over sauced with their red pepper sauce (completely overpowered the eggs and eventually the baby spinach) but halfway into eating it I found a twist tie lying beneath one of the english muffins! I called our server over and he apologized for it (not very sincerely may I add...) and promised not to add it on the bill. I think he was more mad about losing the possible tip over the fact that I almost ate a twist tie. I often am willing to give places a second try but with so many great brunch joints in town it's kind of hard to forgive something like a faulty benedict and finding a foreign object on your plate. Every time we go to Flying Saucer we are filled with delicious food, a la, The Trucker Bowl and The Chicken Fried Steak with biscuits and grits. Besides not wanting to tell the world of Yelp that this is the best breakfast place for both meat eaters and Vegans, I want to help get this place closer to being a 4.5 star place. Just moved to the area and have been excited to try the place out. The atmosphere is retro and inviting. The staff was nice as well. I ordered their Quiche special (bacon, spinach and goat cheese) which also includes home fries and mixed green salad. The portion size was good but overall, the food was really disappointing. The quiche was obviously microwaved where part of the quiche was piping hot and other parts were stone cold. The microwave dried it out and made the egg chewy. The potatoes weren't much better (luke warm and firm) and tasted like they were a day or two old. The salad greens were fresh but their house dressing was pretty much honey mustard and mayo mixed together. In my opinion, this is a sign of a lazy chef cutting corners which is a bummer because this place has so much potential. One of our walkable go-to brunch spots! Flying Saucer is adorable and I always look forward to trudging over there on Sunday AM. The "waiting area" between the front door and the restaurant can get cramped and weird, especially in the cold or wet, but usually you're not waiting for long. The menu is great and delicious...tons of veggie friendly options. My boyfriend always gets the biscuits and gravy and I always steal some. I vary between the breakfast sandwich and the eggs and benedict...both delicious (but I recommend the benny!) The waitstaff is usually the same and always friendly. I'm always bugged out at how they give us half full cups of water and usually half full cups of coffee. My custom dish had the black bean cakes (sauce on the side) 2 poached eggs, I substituted the cheesy grits for sliced tomoatoes for a healthier dish, and got whole wheat toast. I am all for this "vegan" revolution that's popular now but some people such as myself still enjoy meat......and frankly as far as breakfast goes I don't consider chicken sausage meat.
