We went here for breakfast on Mother's Day and we had a nice time. I really like the menu at Sunrise as they had all the standard stuff. The service was kind. The place is really nearby us. It's a nice little mom and pop type shop, which I felt good about supporting. So, the food was fine. I would say all of the food was pretty standard fare - maybe there just wasn't anything with oomph to differentiate it from anything else. For example, I think they made their waffles from a standard batter and the syrup was pre-packaged stuff. They only had drip coffee - no espresso-based. There was one bagel option. The quesadilla was also fine. The side of hash were fine. So everything was fine, tbh. Actually, one item that was a cut above average was the tofu scramble. Nice and tasteful. That was definitely the one stand out. Well, overall good visit. Can't complain. Thank you Sunrise! read more

Everything was good just not great. We got the hash, eggs, and pancakes which though tasty, were super small portions. The prices and the ambiance definitely don't match up. It's very no frills which I normally love. Service was really great though, I just wish the portion sizes were larger for what you're getting. read more

Experience: Came across this small little gem. I always drove by it. With a party of two on a Saturday during brunch hours, we were seated and served fairly quickly. Parking: It seems like paid parking in front of the restaurant. There might be free spots in residential areas, just be aware of signs. Worth: The food was delicious and the staff was amazing! Just from that, if you are by the area, the place is definitely worth the visit. It has real neighborhood diner feel, which I appreciate it! I had the Chorizo Skillet (as pictured below). read more

If you want a home cooked breakfast, this is the place! It's a little small but even on a Saturday morning it wasn't hard to get a table. The staff is very friendly! If you're looking for adult beverages, it's a BYOB so grab a bottle of champagne at Mariano's across the street and order an OJ! read more

Sunrise is a solid breakfast spot. It was snowy morning and I decided to find something close to my Airbnb to get breakfast. With Sunrise I was able to order directly through the app so that's a plus. We got corned beef hash and eggs with an English muffin, Greek omelette with hashbrowns and pita, and because I didn't wanna choose (like Cardi), chicken fried steak with over easy eggs, hashbrowns and cinnamon raisin toast. Everything was awesome! The chicken fried steak batter was well seasoned and the omelette had strips of gyro meat rolled inside and a healthy amount of feta. What more could you want from a good diner? Crusty, buttered toast, perfectly cooked eggs, and good sized portions for a decent price. Check, check, check. read more

A little Ukrainian Village breakfast spot gem! I had friends in town and we were looking for an awesome breakfast spot to cure our booze blues. We actually came here because the original place we intended was unexpectedly closed for an emergency. We were pleasantly surprised how good Sunrise Cafe was. I'm glad the other place was closed! Got the chicken fried steak and eggs. They forgot to put my gravy on the side as requested, but I usually do that because people put too much on. This was a good amount, so was fine. They made up for the mistake anyway by giving us some fresh squeezed orange juice that was divine. Family owned place for a long time with great food and service. The fellow across from us had the best looking fruit and whip cream topped (waffle I think?) I'd ever seen. Hubs liked his stuff too and we both agreed we were happy the 1st place was closed. read more

Top notch service! The server was constantly refilling coffee and water and making sure we had everything we needed. They never let your coffee get cold! I ordered a Sunrise Special, which is a typical american breakfast... Eggs, sausage links, hash browns, pancakes. The other choices for meat were bacon and sausage patties. I think I made the right choice with the sausage links. My over-easy eggs were indeed over-easy. I get annoyed when breakfast restaurants do not get eggs correctly, but not here! The hashbrowns were crispy. The sausage links were bigger than I anticipated. I would prefer the pancakes a little more cooked, but there were still nice and fluffy. Overall I was very pleased with my breakfast and the dining experience there. The dining area is kind of small so it's best for small groups. read more

Got delivery via Yelp via Grubhub, and thankfully it arrived about 15-20 minutes earlier than the estimated delivery window given. Plus one star because I was starving and had a mean country fried steak craving! Ordered chicken fried steak with scrambled eggs and corned beef hash with fried eggs, both with wheat toast. The wheat toast was understandably soggy by the time it got to us wrapped in foil but there was enough butter smeared on them to give it a good flavor anyway. Everything was put on aluminium foil in a styrofoam to go containers, so it tended to continue to steam the food inside, making it less fresh or crunchy than it would've been had we gone into the restaurant. The chicken fried steak definitely hit the spot. It would've been better had we gone to the restaurant, but that's to be expected. By the time we got it, it was a bit soggy and didn't have the usual crunch. But the crust's flavor itself was there, the steak inside was tender, the flake on the outside was savory and peppery, and the sausage gravy was a rich and spot-on add. The hash browns were okay, nothing special, and could've used some more seasoning - pepper? The scrambled eggs reminded me a bit of the eggs you used to get on airplanes. The corned beef hash was good. They resemble the corned beef hash you can get out of a can in terms of texture, and while it wasn't as salty as what you get out of a can, it had a pretty good level of salt. The portion for this item wasn't huge so if you've got a big appetite or a big man, this likely won't fill you up. Most all their dishes were in the $11-13 range per plate so that was a good thing. Glad we found this place and that they delivered quickly, looking forward to being able to actually visit their restaurant in person one day! read more

Went here for the very first time with my friend to get some breakfast. It's a five minute walk from the house which is nice, but there is street parking available (meter). Good food with nice atmosphere and service. I had a veggie omelette with hash browns and toast and my friend had a steak skillet. Really good food would definitely return. read more

Came by on a Sunday afternoon with some friends. We were seated right away and they got us started on drinks as soon as we sat down. They're very on top of refills and you'll never find your glass empty! We ordered a chorizo skillet, portabello skillet, eggs benedict, and the countryfried steak. As well as a few sides. The food was delicious! Completely satisfied with both price and portion size. I also appreciated that they were willing to reheat my friends food because she showed up quite late. They leave your bill on the table and you can go up to the register to pay, which is nice because there doesn't have to be a back and forth waiting. Warning: you do have to pay the bill in full, or divide it evenly! So make sure to plan for that when you go. The place was BYOB but we didn't bring anything. Their juices were good and coffee was good as well. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone in the nearby area. read more

Wow, sunrise cafe is the most unassuming brunch spot. I find it difficult to branch out for brunch as I've already developed some favorites in the area but am so glad I tried sunrise! Having never ventured in, I thought that the busy dinner style seating at the front was all they had. I was pleasantly surprised when our group was led to the back where there was ample seating and beautiful decorations, especially with the sun motif on the wall. I had the breakfast burrito with egg whites and it was stuffed with guac, cheese and chorizo. The tortilla was soft and chewy. My gf really enjoyed her hash browns and her build her own omelette, especially how they mixed the ingredients within the egg prior to frying. Service was nice and prompt and everyone left happy. Glad Whisk was closed next door because I tried Sunrise and loved it! Great selection breakfast menu with daily specials like avocado toast and roast beef hash. Excellent service and we stayed awhile talking and appreciated the continued service! Fantastic no frills get what you order cafe. My mom and sisters were in town and I neglected to make brunch reservations anywhere in advance so I went on a search for someplace nearby that could accommodate us on a Sunday morning. I stumbled upon Sunrise and am so glad I did! Five of us were seated right away and we were immediately served our coffee and juice. After ordering the food came very promptly and was delicious. I got the gourmet egg sandwich which comes with ham and gouda cheese as well as hash browns on the side. I only ate half and ended up taking the other half home. They have lots of "regular" breakfast items but also offer Mexican breakfast items as well for those that want something with a bit more pizazz. If you want something more upscale, this isn't the place for you; if you want a diner with delicious food and great service, give Sunrise Cafe a try. read more

I ordered up a breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs and turkey sausage, and a side of toast with a tomato slice...and hashbrowns. Crispy crunchy, Not too potatoey, Salted just right, Not too greasy, A fantastic delight. They serve Intelligentsia coffee here. It's not my favorite diner coffee, but I know a lot of other people who like it. Nice waitress. Clean bathrooms. Did I mention great hashbrowns? *Two meals and two cups of coffee for $25. read more

Military latte ($7.25)-- matcha and espresso mixed together with milk I don't know what sorcery they put in this but it's SO GOOD!! like matcha and espresso had a baby idk but they kept all the good parts of each other and balance each other out. For example, the matchy isn't earthy or chalky like some places or fake like the Starbucks one. The espresso isn't sour or burnt. And somehow when you combine both of them it's this perfect mellow blend but has the slight bitterness of both matcha/espresso where you're like "ah yes it's not just milk" that flavor really pulls through. But again it's mellow and blends together sooooo well like perfect mesh my goodness. Doesn't overpower doesn't feel like you're drinking matcha and coffee at the same time. It just becomes like a new thing altogether and that thing is glorious. The first time I got it iced (and the black camo latte hot) and all I could think about was how much better it would be hot.... So I had to come back for it !! And it ISSSS better hot. I enjoy hot lattes the hot milk and lack of ice is smoother and blends it together better or something. Obviously the iced version wasn't bad because I still had a great time... but when I came back for the second time and got it hot like YESSS THIS IS IT !!! Black camo latte ($7.25)-- same as Military but instead of matcha it's hojicha mixed with espresso! I took sips of this (as opposed to it being my own drink) and thought it was good! Really depends on if you like the taste of matcha or hojicha more. This one is deeper and richer, more earthy. Maybe even caramelized roast kinda flavor? Buuuut I know hojicha isn't for everyone so take it with a grain of salt. The combo with espresso is magical though like whatever ratio they're using is so perfect. It really blends together so well. ANDDDD here the coffee:milk ratio is so good!! No milky watered down lattes! I'm so used to having to add espresso shots or asking for less milk because coffee shops really be wildin in this economy but this place has a good ratio! Like yes wow we still have good things I love this for us. Matcha lemonade ($7)-- So absurdly sour I took one sip and that was enough for me!!! You really have to be a lemonade person like if that's your drink of choice to quench your thirst on a hot day then this is for you!! If you don't drink lemonade on the regular then I really wouldn't bother. I think this is a collab with a charity or something? Up your vitamin C for a good cause I guess. Cortado ($4.50)-- Espresso and milk, small cup, good test of their espresso and yesssss it passes with flying colors. And again, this place has their milk ratio down to a science. Perfectly balanced, not too much milk and you still taste all the coffee. Love love loveeeeee this place and would absolutely love an LA location. Until then, guess I'll have to plan another Chicago trip to get this goodness again !!!

That said, the matcha itself wasn't necessarily the best matcha I've ever had. I think there was just too much milk in the drink, so I couldn't really enjoy the matcha and hojicha notes. It was enjoyable, but not memorable enough to justify all the hype - or the price. I really liked the ambiance, and the baristas were genuinely kind. They were also very willing to adjust or remake a drink when needed, which I appreciated. Overall, it's a cute spot with great service, but I genuinely cannot accept the price-to-drink ratio. I'm glad I tried it, but I don't think it lived up to the hype.

I have only had one weird interaction here with a staff member, I asked for a pump of mocha syrup in my cold brew and they basically said it was a dumb idea because it wouldn't mix. I have had that in several cold brews at several different well established coffee shops in Chicago and it's delicious when you need a sugar boost. The barista did it but he also shared it didn't make sense. It was uncomfortable. But I didn't let that mar my experience. I still have continued to order my beverage with that barista. The espresso flavor was definitely very strong, but nothing unique or experimental. This is pretty typical of Counter Culture beans since they tend to stick to mainstream preferences. Overall, chill spot. The coffee is reliable, and the interior is cozy.

All the more better to savor all intricate dishes from start to finish. Like the name, The Purple Pig, their specialty is pork dishes so majority of our orders were this. Daily special of the bone marrow bacon jam toast - glazed, slippery off the bone, savory and sweet. Always love a good bone marrow dish to get the sweetness off it. This was so good that there were bits of the marrow and jam left stuck to the bone, I took a piece of the toast and scooped the bone dry. Nothing left for anyone to attack this. Non pork dishes were the Mushroom 3 ways and Spanish octopus. Mushroom dish was savory with all the coated sauces elevating this. Spanish octopus was kicked lightly and easily can bite in to enjoy the tender and charred portions. But the award went to my main course - the braised pork shoulder with saffron, apricots and Swiss chard. Aside from the rippable pork meat when dining on it, the sauces fused together on this dish elevated it and had everyone coming back for more. I needed an official Chicago culinary experience and found it at The Purple Pig without a doubt.

Every single part of the meal was outstanding. The pulled pork was delicious on its own, but I also loved the sweet barbecue sauce. The cornbread was, without exaggeration, the best I've ever had!! Even the sweet tea was perfect: actually sweet without being overpowering or having that bitter, earthy aftertaste that some sweet teas have. I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I came back the next night and tried the brisket. It was sooooo good too. It was tender, smoky, juicy, and packed with flavor. At that point I knew the first meal wasn't a fluke. It's not inexpensive, but the portions are generous, and I felt the quality more than justified the price. I was there by myself because I'm traveling for work and actually enjoyed the communal tables. They made the atmosphere feel welcoming and a little less lonely than sitting by myself. The staff was excellent, too. The gentleman with the glasses at the meat counter was friendly, funny, and made the experience even more enjoyable. He even threw in a complimentary rib, which was such a nice surprise and a great example of the hospitality here. One thing to know before you go: the line can get long, but don't let that scare you away, it moves efficiently, and the food is absolutely worth the wait. Green Street Smoked Meats lived up to every bit of the hype. So after hearing some good things about this place, decided to check it out. Came in on the weekend with a party of four, early afternoon, and the place was filled up, but didn't seem to be a wait. I asked the waitress/hostess if we could put our name on a list and she says she could seat us immediately...(Great,..um where?) She points to a little side door and says, "Go through that little secret passageway, and there's some seats in the back." Really!!, a SECRET PASSAGEWAY....I love secret passageways......just never seem to come across any. We go through the door, down a sparkly gangway to this really cool covered, heated patio which we basically have to ourselves. I'm lovin' it. We order a caraffe of oj, break open the champagne and get down to business. The menu has some interesting options. We got the 3 cheese omelette, tofu omeltte, smokey something, and a jalapeno burger. All were fantastically fantastic. Great food, great service and no corkage fee.. Love this little no-frills diner, super homey and exactly what you want on a lazy weekend morning. I got the country fried steak with eggs, hash browns, and toast, and my friend had the biscuits and gravy. Everything came out hot and fast, and the portions were hefty. We each threw in about $18 with tip. It's BYOB too, so next time we're definitely bringing some mimosas. Only knock is the coffee could be stronger, but I'll still be back. read more

The egg portion of the croissant was not offered any other way but scrambled. It was OK. A little disappointed. The fruit plate was served on a kid sized plate and offered as such. If it wasn't how disappointing. When we were to pay with a credit card they added a 3% surcharge explained as a credit card fee. Come in man. Next time may not happen. So yes it gets hot especially in summer, so most people did take away. But the staff is so friendly, quick, and the kitchen is open hence the heat. Their menu has something for everything, and the cafe-style makes for lots of drooling behind the counter. Their fried plantains and stewed meat looked so good, but I only had space and appetite for that jibarito de pollo. The fried plantains just have such a hold on me! SO freakin good, flavorful, and finger-licking tasty. They also had lots of conchas and flan de coco for sale. It took everything in me to not grab some sweet treats as well. I ordered a shrimp jibarito (not on the printed menu) and a Cubano for my husband. I really enjoyed my jibarito and the staff was super friendly. It's nice to have another option for lunch within walking distance from us. It's a shame we slept on this for so long, we will definitely be back.

The first thing you'll notice is the movie-set-like interior with the classic diner stools (there's also comfortable table seating). The interior dates to the 1940s, when the Grill was established. The most "recent" owners have had it since 1988. But the history goes back even further, and outside the door you'll find tile with the initials of the Irish immigrant who built the building in 1912 and ran a pub in this space. But what about the food? In short, it's terrific. The menu is classic diner, with a full range of breakfast and lunch offerings, and a different soup every day. And the prices are impressively reasonable considering the prime location in Lakewood East. There's no better way to judge a diner than by its burger, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a better one. It's served on a grilled fresh roll with all the fixings I like: lettuce, tomato, onion (raw or grilled), pickles (I had them substitute mine for sweet relish), mustard, and mayo. Add cheese and a pile of crispy bacon and you're in heaven. What's heaven without a side of halos.. er, I mean onion rings. These were super crispy, beer-battered, and served in a big pile. I wanted to leave some, but I didn't. Chris, the owner, is incredibly friendly, and makes sure everything is perfect. This place is a real gem.
