Fantastic pub in the heart of Tremont. Really neat atmosphere! The vintage ceiling fans that run on a pulley system is so neat to watch work and really adds to the feel of the place. Tin ceilings also show how old the building really is and makes it feel that much special. Drinks are reasonably priced as well. Dogs are also welcome inside which is so awesome! I can only speak about my experience on Sunday and it was totally awesome. It was Karaoke night and all night happy hour. The Karaoke host Freddie was the best host I have seen. He was very friendly and had "it", whatever that is. There are many songs to choose from so there is something in their for everyone. The patrons were all like family and very welcoming. The energy was great from the singing to the world famous dance break. They even had cool singing nick names. I was going to get on the mic and bust out my Karma Chameleon, but all the singers were so good that I decided that I better go practice a bit more and come back. The do have dogs running through the bar so if you have an issue with animals then you may want to find another place. The drinks were reasonably priced and the bartenders were way cool. I look forward to coming back and taking the stage. read more

I love this bar! It's been years since I'd been here, but it still doesn't disappoint. We stopped in before dinner for some drinks, and they have a nice variety of cans, bottles, and beers on tap. Our bartender sold us on the specialty shot which was a PB&J shot made with peanut butter whiskey and cranberry juice- so tasty! The price is also very reasonable for all the drinks here. If you can tolerate sticky barstools, loud obnoxious people, and subpar service just for a cheap beer, then this is the place for you. I really wanted to love the Flying Monkey. In fact, the first time I was here I really did! It's got a grunge to it that Tremont needs and when I walked in and heard metal playing over the speakers I thought "Oh cool! It's a metal dive bar- something different and something I can get behind." I've gone back a few times since and, sadly, my perception has changed. They seem to have a solid crowd of regulars which is totally cool, but, if you're not one of them it takes an eternity to get a drink. While you wait you can listen to the bartenders long winded conversation with their friends while crying on the inside because you don't care. The most recent time I went, the guys sitting at the (uncrowded) bar noticed me standing next to them for an eternity and got the bartender (who kept skipping around me) to take my order. I don't think they were intentionally ignoring me but it's something that, in the service industry, they should be cognizant of. Very off putting when a group of bar patrons gives you better service than the staff. Unfortunately this isn't a sole staff member- it's pretty much all of them. All in all a very bro-y bar. I had really high hopes for it and, yeah, I'll come back but there are other similarly priced bars in the area I'll stop by first. read more

What an experience! From the bartenders, Latina Jess and blonde Jess, to the karaoke singers, Black Rose and blonde Hannah, they have accepted me with open arms. Have already told 3 of my friends about this bar and am looking forward to inviting my other 2 friends here. It's also dog-friendly, so blonde Hannah brings her cute little dog Murphy. Where has Conor been, though? He is supposedly a minority owner and often brought his dog, but ever since he got into a relationship and left Enterprise, it seems like he just lost interest. I'm looking forward to bringing all 5 of my friends together and having a super friendship where we frequent this place once per week. So thankful and blessed to even be breathing and typing this. Sunday is the night to be there for Karaoke, it's fun to see everyone sing or if you have the courage to get up. The bartenders are great but when there are so many be prepared to wait to get the attention of one of the bartenders. Then again there are so many people there because it's so much fun on Sundays and if you don't want to stay inside they do have a backyard as well but only when the weather agrees. read more

The drink of the month: Ed Hardy Sangria. Seriously. There seemed to be no sense of irony there either, except coming from me when I proudly posed for pics while consuming. They used the bar limes, lemons, and maraschino cherries. When I was there last summer, I couldn't stand the bar because the back patio was smoking like a chimney with all the American Apparel hipsters crowding the joint. I am not sure what happened in the last 9 months, but it is a completely different place. I don't mind because I didn't like the old place too much, but the Ed Hardy wine? Gross. read more

This is one rude monkey! THE UP-SIDE: The Flying Monkey is a nice little bar. It's clean, the music selection is always great, and the layout is open and intimate at the same time. In addition, they usually have a nice selection of artwork on the walls as part of the monthly Tremont Art Walk. THE DOWN-SIDE: All that said, the bartenders here are always full of attitude. I don't really get it. I've been here probably 15 times since it opened, and have never once experienced very friendly service. Where other Tremont bars like the Lava, Edisons and Prosperity seem to thrive on friendly service, the Flying Monkey seems coldly indifferent. THE SUM-IT-UP: I like the Flying Monkey. It really is a nice little bar, with great atmosphere. However, after having downright rude service here on about 90% of my visits, I am pretty hesitant to return. read more

As an avid fan of the cocktail we all know as the Bloody Mary, I thoroughly enjoy a Saturday afternoon liquid brunch at Flying Monkey. Umm, hello you sweet, beautiful, build-your-own bloody mary bar. Can we be friends? Set me out on their glorious patio on a summer afternoon with one of those bad-boys and I'll be a happy little blonde. Unfortunately, I don't like the path that this bar takes on weekend nights. I just can't get down and funky with such a densely populated hipster crowd. I don't discriminate, but I feel most comfortable with a blend of all peeps, not just one type. Especially not one that is usually starting me down, probably thinking my taste of music sucks just because I dress differently. What really surprised me in a good way? Grand Marnier in a chilled dispenser. Brilliant. What really surprised me in a bad way? Eww, Ed Hardy wine. Seriously? Head over to this neighborhood bar on a weekend night and you'll find a pretty chill, relaxed vibe with cool folks. Weekend brunches are even better. Sadly, the Flying Monkey is not what it used to be. Had I typed this a year ago, I would be giving another star or two. Service wasn't bad or anything. The place is just different. They no longer have MONKEY JUICE! The bartenders didn't even know what I was talking about when I asked for it. RIP monkey juice - you will be missed. Despite the fact I was the only patron in this bar on a chilly, windy Tuesday night, I had a great time and have added this to my short list of fun Cleveland places to return to every time I'm here for work. The bartender poured some strong drinks that kicked my butt a few hours later, and he was a nice guy who's perfected the art of interesting bar chat. I liked the decor, I liked the fact the basketball game was on but with the volume off, and I liked the XM satellite radio (Ethel channel) providing a kickass rock soundtrack to my evening. Plus the bar was so clean! I should knock off a star because their bartop video game thingies don't have Erotic Photo Hunt (at least the one closest to the front door didn't have it), but I will overlook this travesty just this once. Bar was "ok"... Drink selection was average - staff were horrendous! Completely rude and had the attitude that it was a privilege for you to come into their domain and order drinks. The one bartender put someone else's drinks on a friends tab and demanded that he pay it anyways instead of fixing the problem... Even stole his phone until he paid! Unbelievable - the bartender should be arrested for theft - to put a final touch on the night the bartender came from around the bar and actually tried to trip the patron on the way out! How exactly does one rate a dive bar? Four stars just because! We were looking for a dog friendly bar and a bartender sent us here a few weeks ago. This was our second time back and it was just as enjoyable as the first time. Staff is very friendly and even offered our pup some water. There's no food offered but we were welcome to bring in our own (Edison's pizza is one block down). The decor is exactly what you would expect of a dive bar. I'm a big fan of Flying Monkey. The bar is beautiful. Kinda has a turn of the century look to it inside, which fits the Tremont aesthetic to a T. they also have a beautiful, large patio area so we can enjoy the summer months outdoors instead of being packed inside. The bartenders are friendly and attentive and the owners go out of their way to make sure the customers are happy. Many bars in Cleveland I couldn't even tell you who the owners are. Amy and Mike make a point to be the familiar faces you see working every time you're there. They have a ton of top-notch beers on tap and in bottles/cans, as well as many of the standards, like PBR. I can't say enough good things about Flying Monkey. Higly recommended! read more

Maybe this is just because I go there every Sunday and sing my little heart out, but it's nice to be recognized in a strip of Tremont bars where, let's face it...sometimes its easy to be just another brunette wearing boots and a pea-coat. Flying Monkey has Karaoke every Sunday. Fred deals with us on bad nights (after Browns games) and good nights (any night other than after Browns games) plus throws in his own rendition of a Darius Rucker tune here and there. Great locale for karaoke on Sunday nights, centrally located, search no longer! The beer selection was decent, and I was surprised how lively it got on a Sunday night. Almost packed, at least in the front room where the karaoke was. That did lead to a long time to wait your turn, but better than singing to an empty room. There was a questionable character hounding people as they sang which was weird, and one girl sang a 8 minute song, which should be banned, but other than that it was solid. The Monkey is alright, but its a place with a bit of an identity problem. It's defining characteristic is the old time belt powered fans and monkey that pops out of the wall above the bar on occasion. It also features, arcade games, karaoke, and big screen televisions with sports. While all these things may work well separately, together they create the message that the Flying Monkey doesn't really know its identity. Because of that preponderance, it isn't really a place that appeals to any particular constituency. Instead its a place where an diverse group of friends can get together and me moderately pleased. Service and beverage selection is pretty good. I didn't get the chance to sample any mixed beverages, so no comment there. The only thing REALLY lacking is food, there simply isn't any. read more

Flying Monkey is alright. If you ask for the monkey to come out, it is really fun. I don't know why I don't come here more often, probably because Edisons is the only bar I really need to ever go to, but if I want to throw a curve ball to myself, I sometimes will come here. Been here numerous times since a friend [who's a regular] lives around the corner from here, so I've been here more often than not as a matter of convenience. Service has been fine [I remember George was a good bartender], except for one time on Sunday. Waited a good 6-7 minutes to get a drink and was ignored at the bar. A friend also went up to get a drink, had same thing happen. My regular told me that one only works on Sundays. I've been here a couple times on the weekends, and it can get crowded to the point of standing room only, full of yuppies in business casual. read more

Cheap. Drinks after kickball. When rolling into the bar all sweaty and sore we tend to head to the patio. After wiping off in the bathroom, drinks get ordered and camaraderie is had. To say that I know what type of audience this bar caters to or what it is trying to accomplish I cannot. It seems to me that 'The Monkey' (as its fondly called) is the neighborhood bar for the neighbors to come get sufficiently buzzed during the work week. A no-frills neighborhood hangout in Tremont - it's a great place for a beer, any time of day, any day of the week. Good mix of craft beer and cheap domestics ($3 PBR pounders, dude), and the bartenders can make some solid cocktails. Wednesday is Trivia Night, which is a great time to go and get a feel for the place. Gets a bit crowded on the weekends, but it's still in line with the relaxed Tremont vibe. No food, which is a minor inconvenience. But, if you can't find food in the area immediately surrounding the bar, there's no hope for you in this world. Seriously. Also, its dog friendly. So, if your pup is good in crowds and you don't want to leave it home alone - no worries! There's usually a few making the rounds. read more

Worst bar experience ever. Walked in and patrons called me and my friends the "puffy coat club". Of course it was some random chick who was drunk and had no filter. Then had the worst service ever. The bartender was so drunk she completely ignored us and kept flirting with some guy at the bar because he was buying her shots. When she acknowledged us we had to repeat our order 5 times because she was so drunk she couldn't comprehend. In the middle of her trying to complete our order she stops to flirt with the guy at the bar and forgets to finish our drinks. We walked out. By far the worse service ever. I would NEVER take my friends there for any event. If the staff is unprofessional then the clientele follows that. I'll go to a classier establishment with my "puffy coat".
