Brick & Barrel is an unassuming little brewery near downtown Cleveland and the river. It's near a bunch of other breweries so is easily added to any brewery crawl. Our visited ended up being one of our favorites thanks to a silly group of friends, and the super friendly and patient bartender Sarah who made sure we had a great time. The brewery is nearby a cool old raising bridge, which is present in their logo. They have a bunch of core styles to choose from. The decor leans heavily into local kitsch, which gives it a casual and colorful vibe. Prices are super reasonable with $9 flights. The beer quality was great as well. A highlight (or nightmare) for us was the fact they had the infamous Malort to try, we all had our first shots and hated every minute! We visited during a weekday, but I can easily see this being a fun and happening weekend night brewery. I'd love to visit again. read more

Brick and Barrel is conveniently located near downtown. Parking is easy on the street. They have a good beer selection and the bar area is comfortable. They offer outdoor seating as well. I was recommended to check this place out while traveling for work so I did. This little hole in the wall is the dive bar of the brewing word in the best way. Clearly locals enjoy stopping in, they have guest taps and sell some additional beverages along with their own. The beer tender was so fun to chat with. Super friendly and happy to talk about their beer, where the names come from and their head brewer. I enjoyed a good sampling of their menu and all were very drinkable. My favorite was their Scottish ale. I would go spend time here again just for the great convo! But of course I would return for the beer too. read more

I didn't realize this place was only a couple of blocks from Westside Market. I've seen the pics and posts on Yelp, Instagram etc, finally decided to check it out. Its what was expected with Covid. The interior atmosphere was great. We didn't even see the outdoor patio until after. They just need a fire pit or something to keep people warm out and it would be perfect. We stopped in on a Monday night, as we were staying in the area to for a Cleveland Clinic appt. Our beer was delicious; we especially enjoyed the Hefeweissbier. We ordered food from an Italian place around the corner, and they delivered it right to us at the bar...it, too, was great! This is one of best-kept secrets in the Cleveland beer scene. The head brewer, Cara Baker, is one of the few female professionals in the area, and she is making some killer beer. Her lagers are especially good, but everything is worth a try if you have an open mind. Steve, the ESB, is one of my favorites. It's a cool atmosphere with some vintage furniture that kinda feels like a buddy's basement, complete with pinball machine. Service is always excellent. No kitchen here, so BYO food. This place has a really cool vibe and a great selections of local, hand-crafted beers! I love what they have done with the space and the way they have re-purposed many items to finish-out the various surfaces in the joint: * Bar is made from old chalkboards taken from Lakewood High School * Several tables are also from Lakewood High School (their gym's parkay floor) * Large wooden coils used to transport cable for the nearby bridge make up other tables * Old wine and whiskey barrels are used to help ferment certain beer varieties * Backyard area will become a beer garden where they will project movies and videos on the wall * Cool views of the fly-over bridge from the backyard * Great views of the drawbridge out front with an open-air patio and storefront * Hip seating area in the back of the shop for a large group to congregate and have "private" space They also allow in outside food (if you wish) and there are a few eateries close by if you want to bring in. I sat at the bar and ordered two consecutive flights - the lady running the bar was very friendly and interesting to chat with as I asked her questions about Brick and Barrel. I wish I could remember her name... The Brews: Wassail Weizenbock (7.1% ABV) Noble Blonde Belgian (6.5% ABV) Columbus Road ESB (5.0% ABV) McTavish Wee Heavy Scotch Ale (9.0% ABV) Brogue Stout (7.8% ABV) Midnight in the Flats Imperial Black Wheat IPA (8.5% ABV) Ale Syndicate Municipal IPA (6.2% ABV) Big Chief Imperial IPA (9.7% ABV) My two favorites were the last two IPAs on the list. Nice balance of hops and floral notes. The barkeep encouraged me to walk around the back and take a look around - which I did. I also met one of the guys who brews the beer - fun guy to chat with! Really fun scene - while outdoor seating was a bit strange (around the back), the indoor decor was eclectic, comfortable, and unique vibe. Loved all the Cle sports pride, but in a very vintage way (not at all a sports bar!) From what I recall, it's mostly a traditional brewery visit (no food) so not a stop for a meal, but a great afternoon gathering spot for good friends and good beer. read more

This place has amazing beer and the facility is the epitome of what a brewery should be...a nice, long bar with tables scattered around while being within touching distance of the brewing equipment. I'm a huge fan of their Bitter Chief IPA which was released to the public in cans last week so you don't exactly have to visit the brewery in order to experience it, but why would you want to do that?! The visit makes the experience. Amanda is one of the bartenders there and is one of the best. There are many great breweries in Cleveland, and this place is amongst the best. This is a charming little spot at the end of a big hill near the river with good hearted people. They may not have food but they have nice selection of brews. We order pizza from next door, sat on the patio enjoying a few beers while we watched the kids draw with chalk and enjoyed the views of the pulley bridge rise for an ore ship to slowing passes by. I loved how they repurposed flooring and chalk boards from Lakewood schools. You can park in the rear or on the street. Great small brewery down on the flats. They have five or six beers on tap with a few visiting beers as well. Cute small patio, with pinball machines and a few couches to hang out on with friends. I have been here several times, either for the Cleveland Brew tour or just as a nice place to go to watch an Indoans game. My go to beer here is the Bitter Chief. It's the breweries flag ship beer, and definitely a winner in my book. They do not have food,but the italian restaurant next door will deliver pizza to you and your party if you get hungry, otgerwise there is an assortment of chips behind the bar. I would like to go during one of the bars trivia nights. In general just a fun low key brewery that should get more attention. read more

This place represent everything I love about small, local breweries. Extremely comfortable, easy space with excellent beers and no prevention. The beers are clean, well crafted, and are good representations of the styles they claim. Well-curated mix of beers without so much selection that they can't perfect everything. The space is inviting and chill, with well thought out seating and a surprisingly cool outdoor space in both front and back. Brick and Barrel and Platform Brew are two of my favorite new businesses in Cleveland from the year 2014. Brick and Barrel had a nice first run with their beer. I sampled a flight for $5 and all tasted right. The IPA was well balanced with a nice malt back. I do prefer hit you over the head hops. Maybe they will venture down that path at a later date. The hop is a cousin to the pot and it triggers a cool response in my brain similar to Dark Side of the Moon college days. The staff was warm and welcoming on a blustery winter night. Nicole was a sweetheart. They set out a bunch of nuts with wasabi peas that I could not put down. For any potential readers of this review, please do not dip your grubby mits in the mix. Instead, gently fill up a handful by tipping the container. Germs are running rampant. Almost everybody I love has been sick this winter. This is the first brewery of this kind in Cleveland - the kind that feels like a cool converted garage. It does in fact have a big garage door just waiting for spring time. It's got Christmas lights strung from the rafters, a pinball machine, a wide open brewery space, painted cinder block walls, and local art for sale on the walls. Beers are all $5, as are 4-sample flights. All beers are clean and clearly well made. The IPA is very fresh and slightly fuller bodied than most. What really set their beers apart are those blended with wine. The Brewer told me they will have many more after the next grape harvest. It's crowded on opening night even with the nearby bridge out. Still a chill bar. I've been here for events they have like a painting class and I've walked here from Tremont with a friend and their dogs. Love how they gave us dog treats (homemade from the beer process) and a big bowl of water for the dogs. Staff still personable. It can get pretty toasty on a hot summer day but they have some ceiling fans to help cool you down (I'm pretty sure, I could be making this up, but I swear I felt a breeze at the bar). They also have a nice little patio in the back for a quieter vibe in the sun on an leisurely afternoon.
