We went on a Saturday evening around 5pm and ordered cocktails and wings. I've seen other reviews about the wings being too crispy but I thought they were great! I want them to be crispy on the outside with a mouthful of chicken in each bite and they were just that. The lemon pepper sauce was very salty, but I love salt and vinegar chips so I was prepared. The first warning before the actual review is don't even attempt to come to this bar on a Thursday night after 7pm. Every John Carroll University student attends this bar at this time. You won't even be able to stand. As for my other visit, it was on a Friday night. A nice sized crowd, full bar. Sports game on the television. A nice atmosphere for a neighborhood bar. A great touch is the 1 pinball machine in the corner. Older game but it does take up something to do with friends. As with service we were told that the bar is extremely behind by a rude bartender named Meg. You can tell she was overwhelmed and just seemed to be having a rough day. A few minutes later we were told by staff that the kitchen was now closed. Pretty strange as the menu is mainly all bar served fried food or burgers etc. The bartender also announced that they were out of fish as well. I continued to order drinks, they were cold and tasted as advertised. About an hour or so later , the kitchen was then re opened when the bar was less crowded. I order a dozen wings, garlic Parmesan with ranch. The wings were real solid. Nice and crispy and the garlic and parm combo was just enough. The basket of fries we got were average fries. Not crispy, nor salty but atleast they were hot. The prices were about average, no complaints about that. Overall, the bar does not seem to handle stress or large crowds very well. My wings were good, fries were average like I said. My friends attend this bar often and did tell me that this bar is not like this usually. May have been a rough day. I assume I will be back again, I wouldn't pick this place to go to but the location is close enough to the area we hang out. Not so much of any certain type of theme at the bar but I did notice the staff recognize many patrons by name so it will continue to be the neighborhood bar for many. I wanted a Guinness on St. Patrick's Day and not being familiar with the area I yelped my way to O'Reilly's. I did not find the place very welcoming to a stranger; regulars were greeted with exuberance, particularly by the woman that was either the manager or the owner. The younger female bartender was very nice. Since it was St. Patrick's Day, the only thing they had to offer were full meals, no snacks. It was too early in the day for me to have a meal and also if you're going to serve only three items you should at least let your customers know how much they cost. How hard and expensive would it be to make placards to put on the bars or tables? I think it's wrong to force meals on people when all they want is a snack and I also think it's wrong not to offer snacks when people are driving and drinking. The space is old, the bar is worn, but not in a pretty patinaed kind of way and the drop ceiling is stained. Guinness was served in a plastic glass because it was St. Patrick's Day. The bartender said it was because they would not be able to keep up with the dishes. There were only nine people in the restaurant. I could keep up with that many dishes. I am a grown woman. This place is in a strip mall, but once you walk inside, it feels like a neighborhood bar. Not a huge menu...but, what we tried was delicious! Soups are all homemade (chicken queso today) and my husband's tuna melt was one of the best he has ever had! The mushrooms were especially good in my Philly Steak sandwich. My favorite thing about this place is that it's there. At the time of this writing, it's the only straight-up bar in University Heights, OH. That's kind of strange, no? There's a university in University Heights, as you may have guessed, and literally one bar. The 1 drink I had was good but the selection was what the tender described as traditional. I like attentive bar tenders and I think this one catered more to his regular crowd. It wasn't terrible but it certainly wasn't great. Second time ... never got serviced. Walked in a quarter till they closed... they didn't want to serve me. Came in on a Monday afternoon for lunch. Good food, good service, good beer selection. First order of business...do NOT use the map Yelp! shows as to where this place is. The address is right, but the map puts you in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Follow Chris' directions below in his review from 2008. They had a special menu with a Patty Melt on it, so that's what I got. Wasn't asked how I wanted it cooked, not that it matters since every burger is cooked well at any place I've been. But this place. The burger was medium well, with a bit of pink in the middle. It was delicious. The fries were good, thin and crispy, but nothing I would order for the sake of french fries. The rest of the patty melt was very good, but a little smaller than I expected. The help was very courteous and friendly. If you can find this place, stop in. This is the kind of bar you go to to have good drinks and great food with family and friends. Where you can have conversations in a relaxed atmosphere. Sometimes it gets a little loud but that's a bar! The service has always been great and the food is fantastic with great prices and wonderful flavor. OK, I know my reviews are always 4 or 5 stars, but that's because I'm a happy person and I don't really care to waste my time bad mouthing businesses. I was looking for stuff around my house and saw there was a pub. Oh my, was I happy! Here's something Elizabeth doesn't mention though: You won't find this place unless you're lost, leaving Whole Foods (and parked really far away) or already drunk. It's on the backside of a bunch of stores that face Cedar. Already this place is great because it's hard to find. Jess and I had decided to go out last night and get a drink. We ended up finally finding the place while walking the dog and then changed and headed back over. The walk was maybe 7 minutes. If I could live within walking distance to everything I need in life, I would definitely do it, I just really don't want to live in a big city (I don't like apartments) and I'm a cheapskate so I don't want to pay big city prices. C'est la vie. We walked in and it's the usual shotgun bar setup. Bar along the wall, pretty good size, and tables across from it. They have a full bar and a kitchen, but I'll tell you what determines the final four stars of my review: Smithwick's, Bass, Harp and New Castle. All on tap, with Guiness and Blue Moon chasing the pack. Now I know...this is an Irish pub! But those are by far my favorite beers to drink from a tap (I'd drink them straight OFF the tap if I could). So we watched some games, talked about old times and had ourselves some drinks. It's kind of a hole in the wall but I like it! My husband and I have been coming here for over a year - we kind of made it our own tradition to watch the 3 o'clock OSU games here (because it's just too early for drinking for the noon games). During Saturday afternoons the bar is typically calm with a "cheers" feel. This is probably because the bartender, Meg, knows basically everyone who walks through the doors - big fan of her - she's kind of awesome. Went when there was a private party. Party began at 4 pm. Showed up after 11 pm. They wouldn't allow us to play darts because of this party. They weren't playing darts the entire time until 1 am which was the last time we tried. The owner, who was barely able to talk after partaking in this party, said we couldn't play because he was making more money off the drunk party. Capitalism I guess but awful customer service. If I ever find myself drinking on the East Side I always head here. Been coming here for years. Great whiskey selection and darts. Pints are poured properly and always laid back. I've had a few bad experiences at this place. My first issue is the rude staff. I've been ignored by the bartender while the bar was practically empty. I felt like I was being ignored because of my age, 22. I spent about 5 minutes trying to flag the bartender down while she casually talked with a regular. Another rude moment was when I asked to change the channel of the TV , which no one in the bar was watching. When I asked, the bartender was very rude about telling me they don't do that at this bar. Again, I felt as if I was being treated like a child. Another bad experience I had with the staff was their lack of knowledge. I ordered the house red and asked about it's quality. The bartender told me it was super nice wine and went on and on about it. When I asked to see the bottle, I was shown a cheap 4.99 wine I got from Whole Foods just days before. I payed $7 for the glass if I remember. Although I understand the reason for the mark up, I really don't understand why I was misled on the quality. One time they refused to serve us Irish Car Bombs claiming, "We don't do those kinds of things here" in a condescending tone. Our group was not out of control at all, in fact it was our first drink of the night. As far as dive bars go, this place doesn't have the prices, staff, or clientele. I am a respectful patron and a good tipper, so there is no reason that I should have received the treatment I did. Been coming here since my college days when it was a hole in the wall next to Revco. It was not uncommon for me to close down the bar at 2:30 AM heavily engrossed in lobbing darts towards the bulls eye. Good eats, great price, good people. This is a great place for food and drinks! The people are friendly, the bar and restrooms are clean (How often can you say that about a bar?), and you MUST try the JV burger. It is delicious! I grew up around the corner and since I can remember my parents have been HUGE fans of O'Reilly's. Now that I'm a big kid I can enjoy O'Reilly's in it's entirety. It's a great local, family owned bar/pub and like Chris said it's a little hard to find. It's right next to the dollar store and Tuesday Morning but you can only see it from the back parking lot. I HIGHLY recommend seeking it out. Not only do they have a great beer selection but their food is awesome. BEST WINGS in Cleveland by far. My boyfriend and I frequent several bars/restaurants as he lives in Lakewood and I like in Hudson and we have never found any place that even comes close to their wings. Awesome burgers and their specials are always really good. We are going for drink/dinner tonight- something I have been looking forward to ALL weekend.
