I wanted a special cake for my daughter's rainbow-themed birthday, and boy did I get it! I had an idea of what I wanted the cake to look like from a few pictures on pinterest (rainbow layers cake, muted coloring, white icing, ombre rainbow sprinkles, rainbow lettering), and they created exactly what I was looking for. On top of the cake being GORGEOUS, it was ridiculously good. All of the guests commented how delicious the cake was (yay for the italian meringue icing suggestion they made -- it was the perfect not-overly-sweet-complement to the white cake). I will be a repeat customer for sure. Edit: I've tasted their cupcakes and agree they aren't the best. But for cake they are great! read more

okay. i don't know what happened but... so, i went in today because i had a living social groupon. i bought about 20 macarons because i remembered them being really good. they weren't as chewy as last time, they cracked and it was a little messy eating them. however, they were still good. i bought... dark chocolate ganache lemon cranberry raspberry pistachio w.rosewater cream pistachio w.raspberry cream green tea coffee lavender apricot candy cane my favorite is still the pistachio w.rosewater cream macaron. each macaron is $ 1.25 each not $ 1 the classic cupcakes are $ 2.50 each specialty cupcakes are $ 3.00 each hazelnut latte was good too, which cost me $ 3.00 read more

Beautiful and delicious cakes. Ordered one for my sons first birthday and was very happy with the results. The customer service could be a little better in terms of friendliness. Would like to come back for my next event but a little wary of staff. read more

Do not recommend at all. Had to hound them for an estimate but after several emails and follow up calls, I still didn't get one. Was told I would have pricing back same day and next time I called the same employee who guaranteed I would have a response the day before was very rude and said they'd get to it as soon as possible. Needless to say that never happened, they obviously don't want the business. Support small local bakeries, they'll appreciate it. read more

I had terrible customer service. I called and asked if they could do a cake for me a while ago and the owner said yes. I called later that day to confirm the order and I couldn't get a hold of anybody so I left a message. I called the next day and emailed them to confirm my order and nobody called me back. A few days later the owner emailed me saying they can no longer make the cake. Very dissatisfied with this customer service. read more

Working in McLean, there isn't many places to eat without going to Tyson's, especially dessert type places. My co-worker told me about it because she knew I was a cupcake lover. My first impression walking into the restaurant was that it was cute, clean, and the cupcakes looked good. The prices were definitely cheaper than most cupcake joints with about $2.50 a cupcake and $1.00 for day old cupcakes. As for the rest, it was just ok! The cake was a little dry on the cupcakes and I felt they were made out of a Betty Crocker box. The icing was pretty good though and I loved the many assortment of flavors from your plain jane chocolate/vanilla to peanut butter and red velvet. The staff was very friendly and helpful and they seemed to have plenty of inventory. Not my favorite cupcake place, but not the worse either. I may visit it again to satisfy my cupcake cravings. read more

We were sold on them when we did our cake tasting. They offered a lot of different cake flavor options which we loved. As far as design goes, they did a good job, not perfect, but good. The chevron (zig zags were off a bit on the cake). We were told that the shop was known for their delicious cake and not so much on the design aspect. The imperfections of the chevrons weren't disappointing but a slight bummer, but I would still recommend them because their customer service was good and their very friendly. read more

I bought a cannoli cupcake this time and it blew my mind!!! It was a delicious and sweet yellow cake filled with a ton of cannoli filling and topped with it as a frosting. There was also crumbled cannoli shell and chocolate chips on top. Most of the time when you get a cupcake filled with something they only put a minuscule amount in but they put more than enough cannoli filling in this cupcake. Definitely get one! read more

Tough crowd on Yelp, indeed! I LOVE Fluffy Thoughts cakes. L-O-V-E. First things first--it faces Beverly Avenue and not Chain Bridge Road, which is the actual address. Next. I have tried cake pops, coconut macaroons, Mexican Wedding Cookies, mini macarons in about every flavor they offer (love the lavender one), and multiple cupcakes--mini and regular. I come here about once a week, because why not? And no I don't weigh 300 pounds. Promise. One of my favorite cupcakes is the Key Lime--it actually has a graham cracker crust with a key lime filling! Cake pops and macarons are my two favorite offerings from FL. My one complaint that changes my previous 5 star review is the grumpy service I occasionally receive. A couple of the employees are well...snotty. There's no other way to put catching one of them rolling their eyes when I ask for something. Definitely not cool, especially to their frequent customers! read more

Some friends hosted a bridal shower for me, and bought a cake from Fluffy Thoughts Cakes. OMG, it was amazing! Everyone loved it and was raving about it. And I don't know how they made it look so pretty without using fondant. I hate fondant--think it tastes nasty--but somehow they made their frosting appear smooth and just PRETTY! This may be the best cake I've ever tasted--or at least it's up their as one of the best. I don't think I will ever be able to forget that cake! read more

We used Fluffy Thoughts for our wedding cake this past May. The tasting provided a wide array of different flavor combinations, something that was more unique than other places we had gone to. Some people mentioned they didn't like this aspect, but for us, it was the perfect opportunity to experiment with fillings, cakes, and frostings all at once. They also let us design our wedding cake, which featured sugared fruit in a cascading waterfall effect. We had family members pick up the cake on our wedding day, opting out of the hefty delivery fee, where they told us it was all packed and ready to go for ease of transportation. All of our guests raved about the cake. Fortunately, we had some friends save us a few slices, which we ate on our wedding night. And wow, we were impressed. Coming from a family where my grandmother baked wedding cakes professionally for 40+ years, I can honestly say Fluffy Thoughts lived up to my expectation. The carrot cake with passion fruit curd and cream cheese frosting was out of this world. My new husbanded couldn't get enough of the red velvet with raspberry filling, chocolate ganache, and cream cheese. We even decided not wait a year for our top layer and ate it once we got back from our honeymoon. The only aspect I would have changed working with FT was the multiple phone calls I received the day before my wedding. I understand they were just trying to find out about getting flowers over to them, but honestly I had 100 other more important things on my mind and that was just an added stress. As far as flavor and presentation go, Fluffy Thoughts was the perfect choice for us. read more

Love their cupcakes! They may not have a tv show like Georgetown Cupcakes does but the actual cupcakes are just as good (in some cases better) and there is no crazy two hour line to wait in. Favorites are the Red Velvet and the Carrot Cake, in a town inundated by cupcakes these two will stack up against anything out there. Man, I can't wait to try the Apple Bacon cupcake, it sounds so good! When the Tyson's metro finally opens I definitely think they should get a shop nearby to take advantage. The staff also has a good attitude and everyone is always nice and helpful. read more

Lara, Where can I begin. Fluffy Thoughts was extremely easy to work with and flexible. I am not sure how someone can have a bad review for this place because working with the owner, Lara, was a joy. I have uploaded my wedding cake, my groom's cake, and half of my dessert display to demonstrate their level of work. I described what I wanted for both cakes and watched Lara sketch them out during our tasting which showed me that she is not only an excellent baker but has a great eye for design (their shop is a testament to that). In addition, when I told her more about what we wanted for the wedding (a dessert display instead of the normal candy display) she was very excited and understood that I wanted southern style desserts in memory of my grandmother and my mother in law who is now deceased. When the display was put together it was not only beautiful but very tasty and I would not hesitate to recommend them to other brides. Besides, how can you not like a place with bacon cupcakes! read more

A friend called to tell me she had "the best wedding cake" and it was from Fluffy Thoughts. Since I love desserts, I figured I would check it out. As one of the other reviewers noted, the "store front" is small but they do have an interesting selection of cupcakes. The staff was friendly enough and I bought about a variety of cupcakes just so I could post a well informed review. Bottom line. Do not go out of your way. The cupcakes were nothing to write home about and the red velvet left a lot to be desired. As far as price is concerned, I don't mind spending $3 for a cupcake if it is incredibly delicious and these did not fit into this category. To make matters worse, a friend ordered a Mother's Day cake, to the tune of $125+ and it was disgusting. The cake was pretty enough but dry and tasteless. She was NOT happy. If you are in the MD area, try Cakes Plus or Sugar Bakers. For cakes plus, it is better to order the cake than buy one already in the case. If you go to Sugar Bakers, try the carrot cake. Weakness: sweet tooth ;-) I purchased a Groupon to this place (12 specialty cupcakes). Thought the Samoa's and the Cookies and Cream ones were the best of those I tried. Red Velvet was a bit dry and Peanut Butter filling one was a bit off. But honestly they were moist, good size, good presentation and seem to be on par in terms of price of what other cupcakeries are charging (which are all a bit high in my estimate). I also am a big fan of cupcakes with fillings not just plain cake which there was a good selection of. Is an odd location off the beaten path, imagine that affects some of their business. And is a very small front window area, not conducive to eating there. My favorite is still Crumbs, but this is on par with Georgetown Cupcake in my opinion. read more

We used Fluffy Thoughts for our baby's first birthday party and could not be happier!!! Lara was super responsive, and she and her team created an amazing cake, smash cake, cloud meringues, and custom cookies that brought the theme and the party together. They did not only look amazing but also tasted great! Everyone at the party complimented the Fluffy Thoughts baked goods. Also, when the cookies I had ordered from another vendor fell through and never got delivered, Lara came through and only 2 days before the party, agreed to create the same custom cookies for us. read more

Fluffy Thoughts created a wonderful cake masterpiece for my wedding last year. Lara was wonderful during the consultation and very patient and listened very carefully to what we wanted. Ultimately, we picked: -- red velvet and dark chocolate ganache -- hazelnut cake w/ hazelnut and chocolate buttercream -- white cake w/ hazelnut buttercream I absolutely loved the red velvet and hazelnut cake. Not so much w/ the white cake (but that was my hubby's pick). I've since been coming back to Fluffy Thoughts for my cakes and I haven't regretted it yet! Recently, I ordered my parents birthday cakes and they've loved it. The cakes are never dry and the buttercreams never fail. I also stopped into the store for the 1st time over the weekend and tried the following cupcakes: -- Samoa -- carrot cake w/ cream cheese frosting -- red velvet w/ cream cheese frosting -- tres leches The Samoa cupcake is Fluffy's take on the famous Girl Scout cookie. While I expected the frosting to be sweet, it was almost too sweet. but the cake itself was good. The carrot cake and red velvet was good, not great, but good. I definitely like the cream cheese frosting - I usually prefer mine more cheesy, but this was still good. My favorite of the 4 was tres leches. The cake was extra moist and the whipped cream topping was soooo good! I'll be back real soon for the rest of the flavors. read more

I've only had cupcakes here and they are decent. My favorite is the Samoa. I've had a few stale cupcakes and a few flavors that I haven't liked but mostly, the flavors are creative and tasty. Fluffy Thoughts gets an average rating from me but I'll only go here when they have a groupon... and if you wait, they'll have one. I almost can't go here anymore without one because I feel ripped off. Maybe they should space them out a bit more. The staff is sometimes impatient - maybe because I usually have a groupon on the last day before it expires. Don't try to go here during rush hour - traffic is terrible! read more

I haven't tried the cakes here, but the cupcakes are the best I've been able to find in the area. The samoas (designed after the girl-scout cookies of the same name) were jaw droppingly good. They're a little pricey (hence 4 out of 5 stars) read more

Yesyesyesyesyes. Thanks to a Groupon, I experienced these cupcakes, tucked into one of many modular office buildings in McLean, and they were heavenly. The box (and cashier!) were cute, too. I highly recommend the cannoli. Since I am not a huge fan of frosting, the sweet mascarpone(?) really worked for me, and filled cupcakes are just magical. That was my favorite. The spring day was also good, and looked beautiful, but the frosting was very sweet. The lemon curd inside was excellent with the yellow cake. I felt the same way about the others: cloying sweet on top, lovely inside. Definitely worth a visit! 4.5 stars. read more

my review my be biased because of my gluten intolerance, but this place BY FAR has the best gf options I have every seen. While they do not have gf cupcakes daily, that is probably better for my waistline. They are so moist and you cannot even tell they are gf. Their frosting is so decadent as well. I love that you can order all kinds of gf cakes. I wish I could get my wedding cake from here, but I will be having it out of town. They also have mini crustless cheesecakes with whipped cream and macroons! Lots of gf tasty options. I have purchased regular cupcakes for my fiance, and for the office and everyone has loved them. I didn't want a super fancy cake for my Chinese wedding banquet, but I wanted something with a bit of a flare with great taste. I worked with Lara on the taste combination and on the look. We ended up deciding on a white chocolate cake with green tea, lemon, and raspberry filling. The cake would be 5 layer cake with gold ribbons and a gold double happiness Chinese character in the center. She said it would be great with roses on the top and rose petals around the table. Lara was very professional and very responsive. My only problem was with the delivery. The delivery guys were over 30 minutes early, and I arrived at the restaurant yet. The delivery guys just left a note on the cake table asking the florist to put the roses on the cake. I had remembered Lara telling me that they would do it for us if we provided the roses. I was a little bummed, but it wasn't a big problem because my maid of honor made it work out. However, I felt a little insult when the delivery guys came back an hour after we arrived to take a picture, and maybe for a tip too? Overall the cake was beautiful and the guests enjoyed the cake. I would just ignore the delivery experience. read more

I ordered a cake from Fluffy Thoughts Cakes for my husband's graduation and it was amazing. Lara was very helpful and through the ordering process and share recommendations for pairing flavors for the layers. This is hands down the BEST place in DC, MD, VA to get your wedding cake! My husband and I recently got married and Lara and her team were absolutely wonderful! I wanted to surprise my husband with a groom's cake in the shape of his favorite Jordan sneaker and holy canoli did Lara pull through! I wasn't quite sure what to expect, I mean how realistic can you make a sneaker cake look (goggle it-there's some really BAD fails out there)? But after seeing her portfolio, talking to her about her fine art background, tasting the different cakes (believe me, that was the BEST part!) and seeing the passion for what she does first-hand, I knew I had to have her make the groom's cake and our wedding cake. Both turned out so awesome-and delicious! It seriously was one of the highlights of our wedding and Lara was so careful to not let my husband find out about his special surprise. All of our guests complimented us on how delicious the cakes were and our venue had given us a few extra slices at the end of the night...and all I can say is that they didn't survive to see the sun rise! I look forward to returing to Fluffy Thoughts for all of my cake needs in the future! And let's be real...anytime I have a hinkering for a cupcake...(those are also so good). In case you're wondering-for our main wedding cake we had a dulce de leche filled white cake and a (fresh!) strawberry filled white cake with a vanilla buttercream icing. The groom's cake was basically a chocolate macaroon. Go here-I promise you, you won't be disappointed! Thanks, Fluffy Thoughts Cakes for making our wedding day extra special! Never getting anything from here again, they would not help me with salvaging a cake they made (that subsequently fell over as we were trying to put it in the fridge). One would think that for such expensive cakes, they would adhere them properly to some sort of cake board or something to ensure that these accidents could perhaps be prevented. Instead of helping with fixing the top of the cake design that had become smudged in the process of the fall, they said they weren't responsible for the cake once it left the shop and that all of their cake designers were gone for the day (I called about 30 minutes before their closing time on a Saturday). read more

Quick response from Lara. They created a beautiful and delicious cake for our son's first birthday.

Ordered 8 cupcakes for my sons birthday on Sunday, to be picked up at 11:00 on Wednesday. Showed up Wednesday at 11:00 , only to be told that "the cupcake person did not show up"....however-this is a cupcake shop ?!? She asked if I could come back in 1/2 hour. Since I was unable to do that, she offered owner Lara's phone. Unfortunately, that really did not help so I declined. Later at 5:00 pm I received an email (although Lara did send at 11:45) that they would deliver the cupcakes -they just had "not finished the order" . Clearly, that was not what I was told and I did not get this until it was late. If you're counting on them I would be very skeptical. Product is good and she did respond but it was not what was ordered or promised... read more
