I had an outstanding experience today shopping for some new and unique plants to replace the ones…read moreI've lost in the freezes and crazy weather of this year. Avery knew each of their wide selection of plants and shrubs like the back of his hand. In addition to Houston Garden Centers for regular fare, I regularly enjoy shopping at Buchanan's and Joshua's nurseries because of their unique and native varieties. Today, though, I was introduced to plants and shrubs at TGU that are just as native or unique and that I had never seen in Houston before. Avery was impossibly patient, thorough, and easy to get on with as he helped me pick out good low-maintenance options for my hodge-podge cottage-style garden. Though The Ground Up is set up mostly for plant sales to landscapers and professionals, they also sell to individuals at retail prices (only on Saturdays I believe). Sasha, when I checked out, was very sweet, funny, and very charming. I've been to their Richmond location and can't speak very highly of it, but this Brittmoore Rd TGU was brilliant.

I went here for the 1st time about 2 weeks ago just looking, with one specific thing in mind I wanted to buy but expectations low (I'll get into that later). I did end up getting a small basil plant, and then a bigger tomato plant. Spent less then $7 and both plants are still doing good. They sell a huge variety of items, and definitely a spot to get more rare items. So initially I came across this place by googling what places might have butterfly pea and people mentioned getting it here here. Mind you though the posts I saw on fb were over 7 months old so I figured depending on season I might be out of luck, and so I went with low hopes the first time I went and they had none. (Wonderful selection just not what I was looking for, plus I had people waiting in the car for me so I didnt really get to look more in depth into all the plants.) I did ask though as I was checking out if they would be getting some anytime soon (I really didnt want to try growing some myself from seedlings) and the lady said they should in a few weeks and even gave me a card in the case I wanted to call ahead to see if they had any. Well she wasn't lying cause I went back today and they had the plant I wanted in stock! It was an impromptu kind of trip so I didnt bother to call ahead, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it as I walked in. Also walked out with a "dragons breath" and my parter walked out with a "mexican bird of paradise" and a "boxwood basil" which we had yet to see and the few other nursery/garden stores we had been to. We'll be back every now and then to see what other unique plants we can get. 2 pics show the bigger plants we got that we repotted as soon as we got home

The geraniums for $9.99 did not look fresh and appeared dry and yellowish. They had some interesting petunias. I left after buying plants and felt less satisfied from my usual experience with them so I also stopped by their Voss location today -the geraniums there for $9.99 were gorgeous and colorful and well watered. The staff were so cheerful and helpful and greeting all of us and made a big effort to do so. I happily bought more plants there. Room for improvement at this location.
