They also have a Flour Garden at the Brunswick Basin in Grass Valley. They have great coffee...pastries..cookies...day old items ..premade sandwiches..muffins.. and so much more. I really like their frozen soups ( especially in the winter time). ORGANIC ! Ordered a carrot cake about 2 weeks before a birthday party, May 23rd. The cake was not nearly the quality and taste of the same cake ordered 2 years ago. The cake seemed to have been damaged (uneven) and held together and covered up and held together with frosting. Went to Grass Valley location near Safeway... kinda strip mall location should have been my first clue to abandon ship...However I was tired and hungry and so we entered . [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance...?! No.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Had salad- lots of lettuce tasteless blue cheese dressing of which no additional was available as they are not made on site- that my friends was clue number 2... I had a frittata admittedly really tasty. I also had Thai peanut noodle salad which was $9.50 for a half pint... tiny portion tasteless not a peanut to be found or tasted. I think they make the best gluten free desserts in the area that I've tried so far, particularly the brownie and the honey pecan tortelette. The takeaway salads and sandwiches are good and today I had an AMAZING asparagus quiche. The food was also disappointing and overpriced. The quiche I ordered for my daughter was overloaded with onions and tasted like nothing but bland onions. My husband's scone was very dry, and my son's chocolate croissant was hard, even after they reheated it. On the positive side my bagel with veggies and cream cheese was good and fresh. There was a fly in the coconut macaroons and other pastries. I told them about it and they said they would get it. I waited a while for my bagel and they did nothing about it. When I got my bagel, I told another employee about it and said that I didn't know if they heard me, but that there was a fly in the coconut macaroons. The first employee overhears says they'll get to it. I really doubt they will and will probably keep serving the macaroons to people even though it was contaminated by the fly. Gross. Ordered custom cake several weeks in advance. They called an hour before pick up to say they couldn't do the writing as we discussed. When I went to pick up, they wouldn't come out from the back to discuss instead had the man at the counter just give me the cake. I have always loved Flour Garden - been coming since I was a kid. Their bagels are great - they're dense and different from anywhere else. The service has always been friendly but I have noticed a dip in recent years. You won't get 5 star service here, but unfortunately I feel that's how it is everywhere now, so that's not a dealbreaker for me. The disappointment now comes from their pricing. They've always been on the expensive side, but this is what makes NO sense: a bagel is around $2.50, but to get cream cheese they charge over $3 more! Unless they're milking the cow themselves, that's just outrageous. Nice ambiance but the food is terrible, the employees are almost always rude. If you want a sandwich do not come here. The only option is to buy one from a box with old produce on it and literally apply your own mayo from a packet. Bakery sells bagels but nope, you can only add cream cheese and veggies. Want a salad, nope. One in a box only. Clam chowder was inedible. More like vegetable soup with a drizzle of low fat milk. I pulled the spinach off my sandwich it was rotten and also wilted. Everybody leaving one star reviews on here is tripping. Where else in Grass Valley can you get an assortment of delicious pastries, all manner of coffee drinks, smoothies, fresh juice, AND pretty good savory food items. Certain items can be a little pricey, but they pay their employees a competitive wage and use high quality ingredients. To me that's worth spending a couple extra bucks to keep places like this afloat. I mainly popped in to talk about how good a blueberry tart I bought here the other day was, but then I saw all these snowflakes whining and felt compelled to say something. I usually don't write reviews because of specific items I eat at places, but this one is different. This tart had THE most delicious blueberries on it I have ever eaten in my life. They were perfectly balanced between sweet and tart, and not a single blueberry was soft or mushy. Every single blueberry had a perfect juicy snap when bit into. 10/10 dessert experience and much respect to their pastry chef for actually making sure those blueberries were delicious before putting them on there( and for putting so many) One more thing I would like to add in regards to people saying staff is rude here. I have never once been given anything other than great service by their staff.(With that said) If I had to stand behind a counter and deal with the residents of Grass Valley all day every day, I might get a little salty once in a while too. read more

I really love the atmosphere. I have always had good service here, especially from the young folks. The coffee is good and there is no other place that has real biscotti like Flour Garden. But...they have increased their prices to the point it is more expensive to go here for a coffee and pastry than it is to go to lunch in one of our local restaurants. I know their ingredients have increased in cost, but it seems we customers are bearing more than that increase. This last visit was unfortunate because the expensive pastries (a bear claw and a fruit-filled cookie) were definitely not freshly baked (they should have been on the day old rack) and were smaller than usual. For the second time in a week, I have walked out with no service! There is an older, blonde haired lady that seems to be working in the morning, who hates her job and hates life. She refuses to acknowledge people who walk in the door, and clearly can't do more than one thing at a time! God for bid she is already steaming some milk for someone else because she will make you wait and not acknowledge your existence. The prices here are also ridiculous, but I am willing to pay them for quality food just not crappy service! I was so hungry and need something quick. I'm 100% gluten free. I went to get a sandwich, they only had bagels. I offered to buy a gluten free loaf of bread if they could make it like they make their bagel sandwiches. The young man was very helpful and rang me up for all of it. I was so excited until the older lady came out and yelled at him saying she would not sell me a gluten free sandwich. Absolutely not!! She was incredibly rude and her manners were terrible. She was also so rude to her employee (who was actually being very helpful and kind) I will never ever go into this place again. I will let all my friend know to never eat here. Dang I really do love this place. The ambiance is calm and quiet, and the coffee is good. I LOVE the sandwiches and bakery items, and could sit in the cafe forever and people watch. It's just so damn expensive. More expensive than Starbucks. I understand that good ingredients cost more money and they need to be charged more, but I don't think these price points are going to be able to maintain customers. More and more I find myself stopping by McDonalds for their $1 coffee and reserving flour garden for "treat yourself" occasions, which is unfortunate. I just can't swing it regularly. Ordered a sok eye salmon today on a poppy seed bagel. It was like $11.55 and after just eating it wasn't worth for what I paid for. The bagel was dry and not fresh. I called the flour garden to find out why the bagel tasted so dry and they said it is just the way those bagels are and they were baked early this morning. My brother and I walked into the bakery looking for Gluten Free cakes. Three women employees were chatting behind the counter. No warm welcome, no 'can I help you', no acknowledgement at all. Finally, I ask, can we have some assistance. We were told, 'you have to come over here for service'; area near the cash register. We wanted info at the cake case; with three employees, do you think the entire counter could be covered. Rude. Btw; didn't purchase the one cake they had. $57 was steep! I have always liked their baked goods and drinks. The thing that bothers me is the state of their restrooms. It is an insistent pet peeve of mine when restrooms at eating establishments are dirty and neglected. How about a little sprucing up? A new floor, fresh paint. As far as I can tell, the bathroom has not been refreshed in years, many years. A visit to the restroom there is not a pleasant experience and dampens the appetite. This place is vegan. We stopped by to get coffee because we still had to drive for over 1 hour and we were becoming tired so ww needed coffee. The Americano was good. We also got a brownie, power bar, and 4 macaroons. The brownie and power bar was good but we didn't like the macaroons. These macaroons were big, filling too sweet, and did not taste like a macaroon. We are not vegan so we can't compare this vegan place to another. We just know that it tastes different than whatwe are used to. Their quality is good. This place is pretty empty even on a Sunday. We were the only ones there. One coffee was good to me, the other "bold" house blend was very week/watered down and not hot. Most of all, both croissants were very stale almost like a week old. Ugh!!! Tossed the food and one coffee in the trash, kept one coffee (The French roast). With the higher price and the added 15% gratuity without any friendly service and stale food. Severely OVERPRICED goods. Owner takes advantage of locals and others by jacking up the prices higher than Beverly Hills for awful tasting food with small portions. Bitter weak coffee. Marked down desserts and breads that are days and days old and totally hard, stale and inedible still more expensive than anywhere fresh items are sold. Pies around the holidays are 5 x as much as anywhere else for a mediocre product. Owner nickels and dimes to a fault and refuses to toss these items out. Slow service with no rhyme or reason as to how to run a coffee house and employees think they are cool Baristas in New York City with an attitude and not very welcoming who the most part who have not an idea what good customer service is. Such a refreshing and friendly environment. I asked for a shot of espresso in a large cup of ice... the young man hesitated but complied. (I added a protein shake.)
