I had my first float tank experience just the other day. I had a great time despite the fact that I am generally not fond of saunas (with high humidity/temperature) or confined quarters. The Deluxe Suite room was spacious enough for two people to comfortably float in. The facility is clean and the water is perfectly regulated so you can truly relax and be one with the environment. Definitely one of the more interesting things I have done recently, or ever for that matter. Float North County is a Spa/Sensory Deprivation service that promises a unique experience and benefits ranging from healing, relaxation and even meditative and awareness. Wow, with all those things possibly at my disposal, how can I not try it? I scheduled an appointment to be at the very end of my day. 8pm to 930pm. I knew I would be throwing my body through the elements as I hiked all day. The inevitable soreness from the day's hike would be a great test to see if the healing benefits were real and also to compare the meditative claims with the meditative benefits I do hiking for! Alright let's go! Upon arrival Brian helped informed me that I was the only one there for the night so I had the whole place to myself. Not that that would've matter since one would get their own room anyway. In the room is your personal shower, a chair and a door leading to your own private room/tank. Instructions are given on how to shower off and what to do about small cuts and the light control buttons and timing, etc. Anyway, after all that is said and done one strips down, showers off and start your float. I was told that it's up to you whether or not you can leave the ceiling "starlights" or bottom glow lights on or off, or whatever combination you want, as well as any position is ok to try. There's no wrong way to float. Just try and see what works and settle in. I personally used the neck pillow along with a noodle under my knees with all the lights off for the true sensory deprivation experience. In the beginning you're acutely aware that this is just...weird...I had never done anything like this before. Sure, I've soaked in the tub tons of times, but not like this. Once you settle in there is no sight (if you turn off all the lights), no sound, no taste, no scent and most importantly, no touch. The water is set at human temperature and after awhile you won't be able to tell where you end and where the water begins. Trippy. After the initial settling in, I lost track of time and I just let my mind go where it would go. It got to the point where I didn't know if I was asleep or awake. It just all became a blur and all that was there was my thoughts and visualizations. When my time was up they pump in soft music and even though it was subtle, because of the state I was in it was definitely a bit of a jolt! The best analogy I can give you is I completely understand the humans being suspended in their pods by the machines in the Matrix now....you would not be able to tell reality from your mind. The music just happens to be the red pill! So how did it feel afterwards? I mean it didn't magically cure my sore limbs or anything but during the float all that sensation was gone. And I did feel rejuvenated afterwards if anything you're forcing your body and mind to take a break. Not a sit on the couch with the tv on while surfing on your phone "break". A real break. Very interesting experience, I will be trying it again sometime! read more

When many of my friends glowed about Float and it's tranquility, I knew I needed to try it out for myself. My husband and I took the 8:30pm slot on a Sunday night. I loved that they had the later times available and knew this would be the perfect way to ease myself into another Monday. The moment you walk in, the entire environment beckons you to breathe deeper and relax. The ocean rooms are well designed to give a first timer peace of mind in the ability to sit all the way up, move around freely, and adjust the amount of lighting to make yourself comfortable. I loved that my room had twinkle lights on the ceiling! My 6'5'' hubby loved that he actually fit comfortably in the tub! The floating itself is okay. It it a lovely practice in meditation and trip to experience such silence. I did spend the first 5 minutes trying to just relax, then 10 minute fully zen, then 45 minutes asleep. Ha! now that is some solid relaxation! As for the effects, I was calmer and some of my aches were lessened. It really helped relax my back. I did experience water-logged ears even though I followed the directions on how to prevent it. Next time I'll be sure to utilize the ear plugs that are provided in each room. 72 hrs ago I just got home from my 4 combat deployment. This one was especially difficult, almost 12 months without a day off. I was working on average 18-20 hrs a day, getting shot at and bombed regularly. When I came in I had a serious case of PTSD, high anxiety, depression, heighten state of alert, insomnia etc... Although I'm not 100% "cured" per say, this was a much appreciated opportunity to defrag the mental software and start the healing process. First timer! It was great! I walked in and was surprised by how comfy and welcoming the lobby is. I then sat down and really enjoyed the guests that came in. Everyone was so friendly. I then got the tour. The guy showed me and another new lady how to use both machines in case we are ever in either one. Which was really cool. Then I floated. Make sure you read the little what to do list by the supplies it tells you exactly what to do. Bring a pair of flip flops you don't mind wearing and getting wet. The owner Glenn was very inviting, and knowledgeable about floating. He had a very calm and relaxed personality which was perfect for the environment. Float north county was very clean, and unique. Definitely catches your attention as you walk or drive by. Loved the modern, open concept. Easy to just sit and relax as you wait for the tanks to filter out. The back room are clean, open and quiet. As someone who was "floating" for the first time, I was blown away on a number of levels. When I first heard about this, I assumed this would address the aches and pains of lifelong participation in athletics, surfing, and weight training. Floating for 60 minutes did provide an amazing sense of relief in this area. Being essentially weightless provided muscle relaxation and relief to all parts of my body. The other aspect of my experience was in terms of relaxation. Complete silence for 60 minutes provided me with a chance to pause from a busy life and truly relax and be present. It actually took me about an hour after the session to come out of the relaxed state that I was in as a result of 60 minutes of silence and relaxation. This is a good thing, but I would suggest that people plan a relaxing activity after floating. I had never heard of floating prior to this week and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is seeking the unique physical and mental benefits that it provides. read more

I had heard about this place from a friend and decided to give it a try this weekend. I have been through hell with back surgeries. I have to stay away from weights and running, so yoga and meditation have been quite literally a life saver for me. I get a ton of massages and really take care of my body after so many years of abuse. Floating is the absolute PERFECT way to ease the mind into complete and total relaxation. It is a little awkward at first to really understand how this all works, but once you figure it out, it is quite simple.... just get into the tank...close your eyes and let bliss take over. This place is very clean and inviting. Glenn is very hospitable and will help you feel extremely comfortable about everything. i take Epsom salt baths everyday to relieve sore muscles, so this is like taking the ultimate Epsom salt bath. Your skin feels so amazing when its over. I didn't want to have to wash it off, but apparently we would be a salty mess if we don't clean up. I suggest doing as much as possible beforehand to get your mind calmed down. Deep breathing exercise or even a relaxing yoga session. Imagine being in the best SAVASANA ever for one hour, then you know what this is like. My mind races all over the place normally, but this experience completely allowed me to shut everything down and give my body and mind some love. This experience is all about what you make it. if you go into it with high expectations, you may not be thrilled with the results, but if you go in thinking that you are simply breathing, relaxing and meditating for the next hour, you body will love you for it. I purchased the 3 pack for new customers $150 for 3 sessions. When those are up, I will be a monthly member that includes 2 floats a month with a bargain on any floats you do more than the 2. If you are on the fence about trying this, you will not be disappointed. There is no monetary value on health and well being. You deserve this kind of relaxation and trust me, your body and mind will love you for being so good to yourself! This place has become an oasis for me, the benefits I've received from floating regularly are remarkable... what I experience while inside the tank is an unraveling of tension and habituated patterns in my body and mind. When I leave the tank I feel like I'm floating on Cloud 9~ deeply relaxed yet alert, fluid in my body and my mind creatively stimulated. I began floating only a few months ago, and I must say it is akin to discovering a subtle, yet profound new dimension. The float experience is truly a holistic phenomenon - working on physical, mental, emotional and (going deeper) spiritual levels, it leaves one feeling calm, centered and profoundly relaxed. I have practiced meditation for a number of years and, while similar, the states of attuned detachment I have reached in the tanks continually astound me. And on occasions in which I simply need to "unwind" - during a period of pronounced life stress or challenge - there is absolutely nothing better. Float North County provides a fantastic experience. Highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic, Glenn, Bryan and the other staff members run a tight (yet so relaxed!) ship. The facilities are immaculately clean and the vibe is simultaneously tranquil and professional. Each tank (and really 'tank' sounds a bit clinical, they're more like futuristic-yet-cozy bathing rooms) provides it's own unique experience - really each float session does - but I wouldn't say there's any kind of hierarchy, as every float I've done there has been wonderful. After running the Rock n Roll half marathon, I thought it would be good to float and relax my body. I had no idea the amazing affect a 60 minute float would provide me. Immediately after a long run, I can feel my muscles in my legs, back & shoulders start to tighten and get sore and usually I will feel the effects of my run for the next week or two. However, during my float, my entire body was able to relax, the weightlessness was relieving me of any strain and salt water seem to pull the soreness out of my muscles. The days following my float, my body had little to no soreness at all and was back running that same week. Did my first FLOAT yesterday. It was a really cool friggin experience and if you like getting massages and you like meditation you'll LOVE this! It's like being in zero gravity. The experience of being weightless! When I was done my body felt completely relaxed. My skin felt great and it's deeply healing because you're laying in a ton of epson salt. Such a great experience! After finishing the Ironman 70.3 Superfrog triathlon in 5.5 hrs (a PR for me), I was exhausted and getting stiff and sore quickly. So I headed right away to Float North County for a float to help with recovery. It works! The float is completely calming; relaxing the muscles and the mind and helps get that lactic acid out of the body to reduce soreness. I know that recovery is huge to getting the most of your training and I would say that doing a float is by far the best form of recovery I have tried. I think that floating should be a regular part of anyone's training / fitness plan, it will certainly be in my plan now. Adding to the experience is the friendliness of the owner, Glenn. The staff was incredibly kind, helpful and professional. This was my first experience. I actually felt like I got a chiropractic adjustment as well through the relaxing, my very painful back cracked many many times relieving lots of pain. I was able to meditate and really enjoy this experience. The only thing I wish was different if they had shorter periods available for less. 1.5 is a long time. So, I may not have been carried away atop a Russian Soyuz rocket to break the surly confines of our terrestrial home, but I do feel like I had a celestial, zero G experience. Before stepping into the darkened (for lack of a better term and because I think it sounds cool) chamber, I never would have thought floating in a highly saline environment could be so relaxing. I am a fairly athletic individual and my newest physical obsession is not exactly easy on the body. Having the opportunity to release the pressure that laying on a hard surface would produce and being able to manipulate my joints freely was extremely gratifying. Not to mention the soothing properties of extremely salty water. On the mental side, the "chamber" can be completely blacked out providing a one of a kind, sensory deprived meditation space. For those of you who still fear the monsters under the bed, you can choose to put some very calming lights on. For those of you who wish to try something new, relieve sports injuries, meditate in a calm, peaceful place or just want to see what all the chatter is about, Float is a great place to get a new experience.
