I intercepted this recommendation from a friend to another friend, and oh how glad I am that I did! I like that the restaurant is black-owned, and DC native black-owned to be specific, so I had to support. Reservations are required. I went to Open Table to request a reservation for Saturday night on a Friday. They were booked up until midweek. Undeterred, I'd noticed that they offer delivery. So many things on the menu were of interest, but I had my mind set on those oysters. Being from the 757 (most likely Hampton Roads or the Williamsburg/VA Beach area to you, or perhaps Tidewater) I've been around oysters and people eating oysters all my life. I've been able to tolerate an oyster bisque (once) and the occasional fried oyster, but I've never just slurped one down off the shell. I keep saying I'm going to try one. I haven't yet, but I said if I ever came across a grilled or broiled oyster I'd try that. Well Flavorture had some good looking charbroiled oysters with garlic butter on their website. So I said, when I get there, I'll try them. I placed my Door Dash order from my Lyft (a dedicated foodie I am), and by the time I arrived at my hotel, went upstairs, and put my things down, the driver was downstairs with the order. Mannnnn... When I tell you these oysters... I mean... I just... I could've eaten about 50 of them. The to-go menu describes them as being prepared with roasted brown sugar sweet potato and mashed avocado with a smoked vegan bacon crumble. What? That is some masterful flavor profiling, because I never would have imagined those flavors could not only go together, but merge to create something so totally unique and perfect that I couldn't pull one single flavor out on my taste buds. I mean what in the world? I had to stop eating them and get down with the Brussels sprouts so that I could stretch the process out. I will definitely have these oysters again. The sprouts. Perfectly done. Crispy, tender, and sweet. They were the backbone of my meal and provided solace for the fact that there were not 50 oysters. The signature cocktails. I had a hard time choosing one, but after having the Orange Line - Bourbon, Orange Cranberry Rosemary Syrup, Peach Bitters- when I go back and look at the list, nothing else catches my eye. Mannnnnnnnn... The freshness of these aromatics. The @#$#@ rosemary. That is all. The @#$#@ rosemary. I know somebody plucked it that morning. I'm not a real drinker, so the drink was a bit strong for me, which is good, because they're not serving watered down drinks. When they say they're serving "handcrafted beverages," they mean it. A splash of water and a light sprinkle of turbinado helped me out (sorry "real" drinkers). The next day I repurposed those aromatics in my water...chef's kiss. Flavorture is doing the daggone thing. One appetizer and a side was easily one of the best meals I've ever had. read more

This place was very unprofessional. We came to DC out of town and wanted to support black owned businesses. Online they state you have to place a deposit for x number of guests and that amount would be deducted from our bill. We paid $160. the restaurant confirmed our reservation the day before but told us to contact open table because THEY didn't have their money yet. When contacting open table, they said this is not an issue of the customer but the manager needs to call opentable. As we arrive to the restaurant, we were seated and our waiter assured us that our deposit is taking care of. When we get the bill, the $160 was not taken care of. Clearly the establishment does not understand their partnership with open table and should reevaluate their policy online if they can't adhere to their own standards. Very upset and will never be back. It was poorly handled and they don't lead with the customer is right after the billing statement and confirmation was given to show PROOF OF PAYMENT. Do better and fully read contracts before deciding to use a third party for help because you can't handle reservations on your own as an establishment. read more

Came here for my birthday dinner and I'll be honest I was a little nervous that it may be one of those aesthetic places that dress for Instagram. We left with a great start to our night and will definitely be back. One of the biggest draws with the vegan options and I enjoyed the eggrolls, as well as the tacos, I will note that the servings were a little bit small, but our server did not notify us before that those dishes were more tapas style. I had a good time here, there was a private event and birthday (party of 6-8) when i dined here. They put a special song on when they took the birthday girl her dessert which was so cute. Wednesdays are Whiskey Happy Hour all day - $7 whiskey cocktails, $5 whiskey shots, and even small plate specials. I would love to give this place 5 stars. Let's just break down what is needed here: Food - I ordered blackened salmon and grits with a side of Brussel sprouts. I'd rate the entire meal a 10. It was fresh, hot and full of flavor. Service - I sat at the bar and the servers were a bit slow but I was understanding considering it was a Saturday night. They were busy but time was on my side so I didn't complain. Drinks - I believe our bartender was a novice and that's ok (sometimes). I ordered a Henny sidecar and they tasted differently every time. I highly recommend trying Flavorture, located in the Woodley Park area of D.C. For appetizers, we tried the vegan egg-rolls and the corn bread. The cornbread was very sweet, almost like a desert. For my entree, I ordered the grilled lobster and blue crab scampi which was over linguine. The lobster was fresh and the entire dish was flavorful, and the food came out piping hot which is always a plus. The sides were pretty tasty and sharable. My favorite side was the brussels sprouts! They did take it off the bill and it did arrive evetually right close to when I had to leave to return to Conference. I finally got the opportunity to try this spot for a Sunday brunch. It's not a terribly large location but a decent venue, blacked out decor with a long bar and a couple TV's above with table seating to the right side of it as you walk in. There were two individuals greeting guests as they arrived one or both may have been management which is always nice to see. Their brunch menu consists of starters like kale salads, oysters, deviled eggs, and jerk wings, taco and burger options, and entrees like French toast, snow crab legs, and deep fried lobster Mac and cheese with prices ranging from $18-$55 depending on the item. Beverages range from brunch mugs ($16) that come in flavors such as rum punch and mai tai and then there's the more traditional mimosa option either by the glass or in the form of pitchers ($35). I sat at the bar and decided to try the steak and eggs dish ($32) which comes with an 8oz ribeye, 2 eggs, and garlic and herb roasted potatoes and went with the rum punch mug beverage. It wasn't too packed at this particular time of brunch but service at the bar wasn't the greatest even with it being a limited amount of patrons sitting at it, it took quite a bit of time between getting to order a beverage and then food and at this time there was only one bartender working behind the bar and she seemed to be a little disheveled at times may have been a newer staff member not sure but this is just for overall context. The rum punch was decent a good amount of alcohol but definitely make sure you're a person who's into super sweet drinks as this option would cater to you. The food came out timely and the entire dish was delicious: the potatoes well seasoned, and the steak was cooked to perfection and flavorful. They also had a DJ available who was on point playing a mix up of old and modern r&b and hip hop music. Let's just start by saying that to book a reservation, you must put down a deposit that is applied to your bill. There's an automatic 22% service fee added to all checks, and there's a 90-minute time limit for all guests. The ambiance is sub-par for the establishment to be fairly new. I booked a reservation for 9:15pm and was not sat until 10:00pm. The establishment was very short staffed. I can say that the owners definitely were working their fingers to the bone once my party was seated. They gave a complementary bottle of bubbly (champagne) to accommodate for the lateness. Ms.Reddick and Mr.McAlister definitely made their presence known in the establishment and were extremely hands-on and somehow turned a terrible beginning of the night into a great night for my guest. Now on to the meat and potatoes... the food was amazing. Hands down the menu and the flavor combinations were well thought about. The house bread is a must-have, and the bone-in ribeye was seasoned to perfection. The temperature of the ribeye was definitely not correct, but in regards to flavor...flavorture definitely did a phenomenal job in that aspect. All of my guests enjoyed their food, and there was no room for dessert. I will patronize this establishment in the future to see if service has improved. The food here is good and I appreciate management rectifying the situation, but they need to ensure they have enough staff to accommodate the amount of people they have coming in. Don't go for brunch! I really wanted to like this restaurant, but my hubs and I just didn't. There are a plethora of brunch options in the DC area, so at $106.70 (they automatically add a 22% service fee to the $85 cost) per person for brunch, it needs to be special. Also, they make you pay before you eat. That seems pretty classless to me. ATMOSPHERE: It's a small place. It's relatively dark. It was decorated with a Mardi Gras theme. Since the food didn't have a New Orleans twist, it just seemed like they left up old decorations. We walked in and were asked to go back outside to check in. There is little space at the entrance and it was used by the DJ, so I guess that's why, but it would have been better to be greeted there before we walked in. Also, I would not have been happy about that if it was cold outside. The restaurant has two rooms. You can only hear and not see the DJ in the second room. The music wasn't too loud, but it's not a low key environment. Still, it had no real vibe. To contrast, BLK Swan also has a DJ at brunch, AND the restaurant has a vibe. FOOD: The mac and cheese was pretty good, I liked the fried green tomato BLT (hubs did not), and we both enjoyed the beef sliders on a mini Krispy Kreme-type donuts. However, the sliders were a substitute for the waffles that weren't available. The buttermilk fried chicken was not available, so they substituted tasteless chicken wingettes. The kale salad was tasty, but the kale salad and fruit salad were served in plastic dishes. That is not a $100 brunch experience. The oysters were ordinary and came with the cocktail sauce in a plastic to-go container reminiscent of McDonald's. Again, not what I paid for. The collard greens were terrible. The lobster topped deviled eggs were served with no lobster. We asked about it and were given lobster on a second egg, but it was a TINY piece. The potatoes were mushy. The candied bacon was fine. The jerk salmon was dry and lacking jerk flavor. The shrimp and grits were decent (hubs actually enjoyed them). The omelette was fine, but not prepared as I requested. OVERALL: I will spend money on food, so the price didn't bother me. However, you have to make it worthwhile. There are other nice restaurants that have the same concept and do it better at almost half the cost. read more

I actually went to this restaurant with my boyfriend in January, but I am just now getting around to writing this review. I think at that point they were still having a soft-launch or newly opened promotion, so they gave us complimentary champagne when we walked in. That was a nice touch and one of the servers even snuck us an extra glass. We first ordered the house bread, its a rosemary and honey butter cornbread. It was phenomenal!! The sweetness was balanced with a little saltiness, it was moist, everything you would want in a cornbread. The truffle fries were pretty good, slightly more flavorful than truffle fries I've had at some other restaurants. We also got he braised short rib sliders that were packed with flavor. The meat was tender but there was a little more pickled slaw than we would prefer. I had the lamb chops and honestly I will probably never order lamb chops from any restaurant again. I don't blame just this restaurant alone, but every time I order lamb chops they are small and have an odd sweet flavor. I have encountered a lot of honey flavored lamb chops and I am not a fan of the combination. I thought that by ordering rosemary lamb chops I would be more likely to have a savory lamb dish, but that was not the case. In hindsight, I should have asked before I ordered. I will say that the cook on the meat was a perfect medium rare. The star dish of the night, however, was the stuffed airline chicken breast! It was so juicy, so tender, and full of flavor. I don't usually order chicken at restaurants because I assume it will be bland, basic, or sometimes even dry. But this one made me reconsider! The mashed potato side was good, but the collard greens left more to be desired in the flavor department. The service was great, the staff was kind, and the food arrived in a timely fashion. This one of the worst experiences I had at a restaurant. Firstly I ordered a drink on the menu. My appetizer came before the drink did. The drink was made poorly. I believe the purpose of mixed drink is to calm the taste alcohol down. The drink was straight tequila. For the entrees it took over an hour for the food to get brought out. Presentation is a poor substitute for quality. The waitress failed to bring out one of my guests order and she had to wait another 45 minutes. When it came the chicken was tough and impossible to eat she did not eat the food and was still charged for the item. With no discount or any type of accommodation. This poor service. Speaking of service, they take a 22 % payment out automatically. This is a ridiculous amount as I paid 42 extra dollars for poor service and poor food.
